Film historian Philip Harwood will introduce and discuss the films, and Ben Model will accompany them on piano. 7:30 p.m. 2 LIVE AT PWPL: Walking the Line. Tom Cavanagh’s tribute to Johnny Cash. 7:30 p.m. 8 13 Friday SANDWICHED IN: “The Elie and Viola Nadelman Folk Art Collection.” A discussion with New-York Historical Society docent Fred Fischer. 12:10 p.m. SCRABBLE: Join us for a game! Fridays in August from 2 to 5 p.m. Monday VIRTUAL VISITS: “Ancient Entertainment.” Michael Norris offers you a virtual front row seat at ancient Greek and Roman sports events, theater performances, chariot races and gladiator contests. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library. 2:30 p.m. MAD DOGS & ENGLISHMEN: Professor Val Franco presents this four-part film series of English (and Irish) comedies and dramas. Tonight: Greenfingers (2000-91 min.). Helen Mirren, Clive Owen and David Kelly star in the true story of love, friendship, honor, gardening and prison. Joel Hershman scripted and directed this comedy. Recommended for adults. 7:30 p.m. Tuesday EXERCISE FOR OVER 50. The lottery format has been suspended for this next series of classes. Registration begins today at 9 a.m., at the Information Desk, and will proceed until both classes are filled. The chair class, with Nicole Asselta, is on Tuesdays at 9 a.m. from September 27 through November 15. The mat class, with Donna Harrigan, is on Thursdays at 9 a.m. from September 29 through November 17. Payment of $30 (cash or check) for each class is due at registration. CHESS. Join us for a game! Tuesdays in August from 2 to 4 p.m. ADULT COLORING. Tuesdays in August. It’s just like coloring for kids, but more complex—it’s definitely harder to stay in the lines. Meetings will be relaxed and informal; they’re great for stress relief and getting to know your neighbors. 7 to 8:30 p.m. 3 5 “HELLO, MY NAME IS DORIS” (201590 min.). When sixty-something Doris Miller (Sally Field) meets thirty-something John Fremont (Max Greenfield), sparks fly -- at least for Doris. When Doris begins showing up at John’s regular haunts, she wins over his Williamsburg friends. Her new life brings Doris a thrilling perspective, but also creates a rift between her and her longtime friends and family, who believe she’s making a fool of herself over a guy half her age. Snoopy (voiced by Bill Melendez) and his team take to the skies to pursue their arch-nemesis, the Red Baron, while Charlie Brown (Noah Schnapp) begins his own epic quest to win the love of his life, the Little RedHaired Girl (Francesca Capaldi). Steve Martino’s animated feature was scripted by Craig Schulz (son of Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz), Bryan Schulz (Charles’s grandson) and Cornelius Uliano. 7:30 p.m. 9 15 Monday AFTERNOON ON BROADWAY: “Chita Rivera.” Marc Courtade discusses the dancer, actress and singer who has been a Broadway fixture for over 50 years. She was catapulted to stardom in 1957 as Anita in West Side Story. This was followed by such memorable roles as Rosie in Bye Bye Birdie, Velma Kelly in Chicago and Spider Woman/Aurora in Kiss of the Spider Woman. She recently celebrated her 80th birthday performing as Princess Puffer in The Mystery of Edwin Drood. 3 p.m. MAC 10 16 LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES MEETING/WORKING SESSION. The public is invited at 7:30 p.m. PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB OF LONG ISLAND meets. 7:30 p.m. 11 Thursday GARY ERBE. The artist discusses his current exhibit at the Heckscher Museum. Co-sponsored by the Friends of the Library and the Art Advisory Council. 3 p.m. DIRECTOR’S CUT. Film expert John Bosco will screen and discuss Brooklyn (2015-111 min.). Irish immigrant Eilis Lacey (Oscar nominee Saoirse Ronan) lands in 1950s Brooklyn, where she quickly falls into a romance with a local lad, Tony (Emory Cohen). When her past catches up with her, however, she must choose between two countries. Nick Hornby scripted, from Colm Toibin’s novel, for director John Crowley. 7 p.m. 12 Friday SANDWICHED IN: Brian Seibert. Meet the New York Times dance critic and author of What the Eye Hears: A History of Tap Dancing. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library. 12:10 p.m. Monday MAD DOGS & ENGLISHMEN. Professor Val Franco concludes this series with The Guard (2011-96 min.). An Irish policeman (Brendan Gleeson) teams up with an American FBI agent (Don Cheadle) to catch drug smugglers. Writer/director John Michael McDonagh’s comedy is Ireland’s highest-grossing film of all time! Recommended for adults. 7:30 p.m. 30 “ANOMALISA” (2015-90 min.). Noted customer service author Michael Stone (voiced by David Thewlis) travels to Cincinnati to speak at a conference, where he meets Lisa Hesselman (Jennifer Jason Leigh), an experience that changes his life. Screenwriter Charlie Kaufman directed this animated film with Duke Johnson. Tom Noonan provides the voices of all the other characters. Free, walk-in assistance from Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council. 2:30 to 5 p.m. SANDWICHED IN: “The Softer Side of Wit.” Author Ellen Meister brings Dorothy Parker to vivid life, discussing her career as a critic, poet, short story writer, essayist and screenwriter, as well as her involvement with causes ranging from the Sacco and Vanzetti case to the Civil Rights Movement. Ellen Meister is the author of five novels, including Dorothy Parker Drank Here and Farewell, Dorothy Parker, as well as numerous essays and short stories. Minnie Goetze (Bel Powley), a teen cartoonist living in 1970s San Francisco, enters into an affair with thirty-something Monroe Rutherford (Alexander Skarsgard), who is already the boyfriend of her mother, Charlotte Worthington (Kristen Wiig). Director Marielle Heller adapted Phoebe Gloeckner’s graphic novel. Recommended for adults. 7:30 p.m. MAD DOGS & ENGLISHMEN. Professor Val Franco will screen and discuss Pride (2014-119 min.), a dramedy that looks at the devastating 1984 coal miners’ strike in Wales, and the unique alliance that was forged with London’s young gay community. In a city of anthropomorphic animals, rookie bunny cop Judy Hopps (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin) and cynical con artist fox Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman) must work together to uncover a conspiracy. Byron Howard, Rich Moore and Jared Bush directed this Disney cartoon. 7:30 p.m. 26 Friday SANDWICHED IN: “The Virtuoso Performing Composer.” Pianist Kathleen Tagg performs music by some of the greatest composers for the piano, combining their music with stories about their lives to create a vibrant portrait of the artists, their lives and work. 12:10 p.m. 18 Tuesday “SPOTLIGHT” (2015-128 min.). Investigative reporters for The Boston Globe work to expose decades of sexual abuse by Catholic priests and cover-ups of the crimes by the Catholic Church.
