Once the DA-88 is stable, the setup procedure can be followed. The DA-88 will detect the sample rate of a loaded cassette. NOTE The 328 should be set to this sample rate in the Clock Source Sel menu (see page 4). However, the DA-88 must be set to receive external clock. Press the <CLOCK> button on the DA-88 until the LED indicates ‘WORD’. The LED should NOT flash, but remain lit. If the ‘WORD’ LED flashes, firstly check that the cabling is correct and the 328 clock settings have been entered correctly. The DA-88 must also be set up to receive the input from the TDIF input rather than the analogue inputs. To do this, press the <DIGITAL IN> button on the DA-88. To set up the DA-88 to receive the MIDI Machine Control commands for remote control from the 328’s transport control, the DA-88 must be fitted with the Tascam SY-88 synchronization board. This board has a series of Mode Dip Switches, some of which must be set up correctly to work with the 328. The relevant settings are as follows: Switch 2: If the MIDI input is used for MMC control of the DA-88, the switch should be UP - if the RS-422 port is used for control of the DA-88, the switch should be DOWN; Switch 5: This switch should be set to UP as Timecode is then transmitted with reference to the Digital audio output; Switch 6: This switch should be set to DOWN for Timecode is to be transmitted from the DA-88 to the 328. For further information the Tascam SY-88 manual should be consulted. To complete the setup, turn on the 328 again. Tascam DTRS Setup Guide 7 5 Tascam DA-98 / DA-98HR Turn on the DA-98 and allow a few seconds for the DA-98 to boot correctly. Once the DA-98 is stable, the setup procedure can be followed. The DA-98 will detect the sample rate of a loaded cassette. NOTE The 328 should be set to this sample rate in the Clock Source Sel menu (see page 4). However, the DA-98 must be set to receive external clock. Press the <CLOCK> button on the DA-98 until the LED indicates ‘WORD’. The LED should NOT flash, but remain lit. Set the frame rate to the same as set in the Digital 328 timecode setup. Press <ENTER> to confirm and enter the ‘OutTc Tmg’ menu. Set this to ‘Digital’ so the timecode is output from the DA-98 with reference to the digital output rather than the analogue output. Press <ENTER> to confirm and enter the ‘OutTc Src’ submenu. Set this to ‘Tape (Abs)’ so that the DA-98 timecode generation is referenced from the loaded DTRS cassette. Press <ENTER> to confirm and <ESCAPE> to return to the main menu page. Enter menu #7 to enable or disable MTC output, as required. The following submenus should appear: Enter the ‘MTC Out’ submenu and enable or disable the MTC output. If MTC is to be used, ‘Fast ‘ and ‘Stop’ should also be set in this menu. NOTE With a DA-98HR, 24 bit wordlength can be selected. If this is set to on, 24 bit should also be set as the wordlength in the Digital 328 Tape Port Select menu (see page 4). To complete the setup, turn on the 328 again. Tascam DTRS Setup Guide 9 6 Additional Information DA-88 Model Differences There are 4 different generations of DA-88, numbered conveniently from 1 – 4. A wordclock incompatibility exists between Version 4 DA-88s and earlier models. Operation of a Version 4 DA-88 in conjunction with an earlier model requires a Version 4 Tascam DA-88 system board to be fitted to the earlier generation machine. Operation of two Version 4 DA-88s or operation of any two units from generations 1-3 does not present these problems and no system board change is required. MIDI Machine Control Of Two DA Series Machines The MIDI Machine Control (MMC) of the DA series allows transport controls to be controlled from the 328. Record Enable MMC is also implemented into the DA machines. The DA-98 and DA78HR do not require additional hardware, but in order for MMC – DTRS Sync to be used on the DA-38 and DA-88, additional hardware is required. With the DA-38, the MMC-38 unit must be used, and with the DA-88 either the MMC-38 may be used or an SY-88 board may be fitted. The MMC-38 and SY-88 have the same functionality as far as the Digital 328 is concerned – both output SMPTE and MTC.
