The Women’s Club of Costa Rica CONNECTION “Friendship and Service” Celebrating 75 years of service to the community www.wccr.org 2015 — Issue 3 MISSION “The Women’s Club of Costa Rica is a social and philanthropic organization supporting personal growth and advancement of women and young people through scholarships and other educational opportunities.” In this issue: March Luncheon Treasurer’s Report Community Service Interest Groups News Calendar of Social Activities and Meetings NOTICE — There will be an Extraordinary Meeting following the Ordinary Meeting on March 11, 2015. The purpose of the Extraordinary Meeting is the election of three members to Board positions left vacant between December and January. The nominees for those positions are: Membership Lisa Aspinall for Recording Secretary Community Events Ellen Corliss for Corresponding Secretary Joan Boyce for Vocal Page 2 The Women’s Club of Costa Rica CONNECTION COMMUNITY SERVICES REPORT SCHOOLBOOKS FOR KIDS PROGRAM “This http://wccr.org/donations/ year WCCR supports 35 schools, with the number of students ranging from 2 to 117 each. After verifying the final registration with each school, a total of 1,130 children will receive a set of four schoolbooks. The amount owed to La Nación is ¢6,780,000, which we have amply covered with the ¢3,000,000 budgeted by the Club to support this project, plus the donations received from so many generous people. La Nación has begun delivering the books and expects that by the second week of March, all the children will be the proud owners of their new schoolbooks. An interesting tidbit: this year of the 35 schools selected, the Club is donating to 21 one-teacher schools. The use of textbooks in these small schools is invaluable. Due to their location, it is almost impossible to make photocopies, the method often used before the schoolbook program. Also prior to this endeavor the teachers would spend too much of their valuable time writing the various lessons on a board for their students to copy into their notebooks. One valiant teacher is running a school with 36 children, and another has 29 students, whereas one lucky teacher only has 2! As soon as it is possible, we will organize several school visits. If you wish to be included in one of these, and you haven’t already informed me, please contact me. Anne Kreupeling, Schoolbooks for Kids Chair Cell: 8841 0026. We are very pleased with the excellent grades A new student accepted into the Scholarship Program comes from a very poor family that lives near Sta. María de Dota. Recommended by WCCR member Vicky Chacón, he is in his second year at UNED (a state university offering extension courses) in Business Administration. We have four ASOBITICO (Association of International Baccalaurate High Schools of Costa Rica) students and anticipate supporting two more this year. They are all students at Liceo Gregorio José Ramírez in Alajuela, a very good public school that was attended by several former beneficiaries of our Colegio Becas (High School) Program. The contribution is in fact managed and disbursed by ASOBITICO. The $500/year for each student toward special equipment, supplies and books that the IB students need to complete the rigorous 2-year program.
