Build Background
Read the title to children and talk with them about butterflies. Ask them to describe
butterflies they have seen. Encourage children to use their knowledge of butterflies to
think about the book. Ask questions such as the following: ¿En qué se parecen todas las
mariposas? ¿En qué se diferencian?
Introduce the Text
Guide children through the text, noting important ideas, and helping with unfamiliar
language and vocabulary so they can read the text successfully. Here are some
suggestions:
Page 2: Explain that this book gives facts about butterflies.
Suggested language: Vayan a la página 2. ¿Qué ven en la foto? La foto muestra
distintas clases de mariposas. ¿Qué clase de mariposa les gusta a ustedes?
Page 3: Miren la foto de la mariposa. ¿Alguna vez vieron una mariposa como esta?
¿Dónde está la mariposa? La última oración dice: Esta mariposa se para sobre una

Have children match one spoken word to one written word while reading the book.
Phonemic Awareness and Word Work
Provide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities:
• Matching Game Materials: index cards. On individual index cards, write pairs of
words with diphthongs, such as vuelven-vuelta, cuando-agua, invierno-miedo. Remind
children that a diphthong is the occurrence of two different vowels in one syllable.
Spread out the cards face down in random order, and let two children use them to play
Concentration. Children take turns turning over two cards to find a match. Unmatched
cards are placed back face down. The object is to match words with the same
diphthong.
• Clapping Syllables Have children hear and say syllables in words from the book,
such as mariposas, muchas, asustar, enemigos. Have them clap on each syllable: mari-po-sas, mu-chas, a-sus-tar; e-ne-mi-gos.

Describing Words
Build on the adjectives in Las mariposas.
Suggested language: Pensemos en las palabras que describen cosas. La mariposa más
grande de todas vive en lugares cálidos y húmedos del bosque tropical. Más grande
describe a la mariposa. Cálidos y húmedos describe a los lugares del bosque tropical.
Miremos las fotos de las mariposas y pensemos en palabras para describirlas. As children
suggest adjectives, write their words and sentences on the board or on a long strip of
paper. Begin the list with the sentence frame Veo una mariposa ___.
