Volkswagen’s factory tour with a difference
People planning to visit the
Volkswagen Group South Africa’s
manufacturing factory in Uitenhage can
expect a tour with style and comfort.
The Volkswagen FactoryTour is now
mobile, allowing the visitors to rest their
feet, sit back and enjoy the ride whilst
witnessing the intricate manufacturing
process of the current best-selling passenger cars in South Africa, Polo and
Polo Vivo.
The new FactoryTour vehicle was custom built by two Volkswagen
Motorsport employees using recycled
and unused car parts from the factory.
The novelty and ingenuity of their approach in manufacturing the vehicle
that consists of three cars resulted in a
comfortable, practical and stylish vehicle.
“We were initially planning to
outsource the project but we changed
our minds after realising we have vast
amount of experience in the company
which we can tap on for our ambitious
project. The decision to use internal
expertise saved the company money
and delivered world-class, quality work
that we are very proud of,” said Matt
Gennrich, General Manager of Communications at Volkswagen Group
South Africa.
It took Johnny Allen and Cobus
Barnard from Volkswagen Motorsport
over three months to complete the three
cars. “Each car took nearly 30 days to
complete. We spent most of the time
designing, sourcing parts and manufacturing the cars,” explained Barnard,
who has been with Volkswagen for
nearly 10 years.
The vehicle was built using spare
material and parts from the Motorsport
workshop and factory. “We used left
over paint from the rally cars, spare nuts
and bolts as well trim off-cuts to deck
out the cars. We built the chassis out of
old tyre racks, which we cut in required
lengths. The side panels and doors were
moulded from scrapped parts from the
factory,” added Barnard.
The FactoryTour vehicle can comfortably sit 21 people and will be pulled
by an electric tow motor. In the past
five years, nearly 43 000 people have
visited the Volkswagen manufacturing
factory.
Gennrich said the FactoryTour vehicle
will be helpful in speeding up the factory tours especially with the senior citizens that sometimes struggle to walk
around the factory.
“We hope the vehicle will give our
Volkswagen opens multi-purpose sports facility
Volkswagen Group South Africa has
opened a world class sports and recreational facility for its employees at the
manufacturing factory in Uitenhage.
The R30-million PeoplePavilion,
which caters for indoor and outdoor
sporting activities, will be used by all
Volkswagen employees and their families on any day of the week.
“The PeoplePavilion is not just a
building but a platform where all our
people can engage with each other in
a different manner beyond the hierarchical structures. This world-class facility in terms of structure and quality represents what Volkswagen stands for as
a people-oriented organisation,” said
the Managing Director of Volkswagen
Group South Africa, David Powels.
The PeoplePavilion was built on the
same land that housed the previous
Volkswagen’s sport complex. “Our initial plan was to renovate and improve
the physical structure of our aging
sports complex. However, it became
apparent when we were reviewing our
new company strategy that people
form an important pillar of our plan to
being a great organisation. This provided us with an opportunity to invest
in a people facility which would help
to improve their quality of life whilst
also allowing us to engage with them,”
added Powels.
The facility has a gym which is managed by a qualified Biokineticist and
is open to all Volkswagen employees
to use for a nominal membership fee.
The gym will also be used for the reha-
bilitation of injured Volkswagen employees and is equipped with purposely
built gym equipment. There is also a
clubhouse with a licenced bar and terrace which overlooks the multi-purpose
main field that will be used for soccer,
rugby and cricket.
The clubhouse has been outsourced
to Ashwin Doolabh, a local entrepreneur. Doolabh is one of the local entrepreneurs that has been mentored and
coached at the Volkswagen Business
Support Centre in Uitenhage.
The highlight of PeoplePavilion is its
indoor multi-purpose sports hall which
is available to employees and local
community to hire for family celebrations such as weddings. The hall can
also be converted into a 450-seater
conference centre. The multipurpose
hall is also fully equipped for indoor
sporting activities such as indoor
cricket, indoor soccer, volleyball and
martial arts.
Currently over 1 500 Volkswagen
employees (about 30% of the employees in Uitenhage) actively participate
in 13 different sporting codes like
netball, soccer, cricket, cycling and
klaberjas. “We hope the new facility
will attract and motivate more people
to participate in different sporting
codes that are available. We want
PeoplePavilion to be home to our talented sportspeople and their supporters,” said Powels.
The facility has already hosted a
number of employee events since it
opened last month. These include the
inaugural soccer match between
Volkswagen managers and supervisors
as well as an open day for employees
and their families. The first stage of the
2013 Volkswagen Rally on 19 July can
also be watched from the viewing
decks of the clubhouse.
Thank you to the Volkswagen Rally sponsors
visitors a comfortable and memorable
tour of our facility where we build
world-class cars,” added Gennrich.
The FactoryTours take place during
weekdays. There are two tours on Monday to Thursday at 09h00 and 12h00.
On Friday, there is only one tour at
09h00.
Bookings can be made through the
Volkswagen AutoPavilion on (041) 994
5941/3. The FactoryTour includes the
tour of the AutoPavilion, where some
of the Volkswagen South Africa classic
cars are on display.

Welcome to the VW Rally
The Volkswagen Rally is as much a
part of the fabric of life in the Eastern Cape as Volkswagen SA is for
the local community. It is always a
highlight in a very busy year. This
year the 31st running of this highly
anticipated annual event is no exception.
For more than three decades the
Volkswagen Rally has changed and
adapted according to the prevailing
winds of the sport - but one thing
has not changed. The passion for
motorsport and the enthusiasm with
which the event is followed.
As a company, Volkswagen has a
strong focus on the people involved
with the brand. Volkswagen is made
up of people and it is people who
make our products that touch the
lives of so many South Africans.
High standards, commitment and
excellence can be found throughout
the organisation at every level.
The People Pavilion, which rally
fans spectating at the first stage of
the rally will see, shows how
Volkswagen invests in the people
who make the company what it is.
This is just the latest project from
Volkswagen to express its appreciation for the time and effort that goes
into making our people’s cars.
Enthusiasm and excitement will be
the theme this weekend as the national rally field seek to excel on the
various stages.
We will be watching the events
unfold with interest, cheering these
sportsmen and women on to achieve
their best.
Our thanks to the Algoa Rally Association for their efforts in putting
together another successful event, I
am sure the rally fans appreciate it
just as much as the competitors.
The teams and supporters that
travel long distances to be here, enjoy the hospitality that the Eastern
Cape has to offer, I hope it is a fantastic weekend of rally action, please
travel home safely when you leave.
David Powels, Managing Director: Volkswagen Group South Africa
Forest spectating made easy
Spectating at the Volkswagen Rally has
been made as easy as possible. Newcomers wanting to venture into the
Longmore Forest need not feel intimidated finding their way around on the
event.
Firstly, make your way to the Hankey
turn-off on the N2 between Port Elizabeth and Jeffreys Bay.
From there navigation is as easy as
1-2-3. Either use the spectator map in
this guide or use your GPS and punch
in the co-ordinates contained on this
page.
You can also use the driving instructions laid out in this guide to reach your
destination.
When you are in Longmore Forest,
you will notice large white boards containing a black letter. Letters will range
from A to G.
Please note that most consumer GPS
devices will only lead you to point C in
the forest as this is still considered a
public road. Change the settings to offroad or unpaved roads use if they are
available.
Average travel time to the Longmore
Forest is approximately 25-30 minutes.
Average travel time in the forest from
one spectating point to another is approximately 10-15 minutes when taking dust, traffic and parking into consideration.
All spectating points will have toilet
facilities and rubbish bins. Refreshments
will also be available at some of the
Medical Emergency
Contact Number –
083 299 2079
spectating points, but mainly at the
main service park which is point A on
the map.
While attending the Volkswagen
Rally, please respect other road users,
leave enough space for other spectators to park, do not speed in the forest
and, if your vehicle’s wheels are on
gravel, please turn on your lights.
Keep an eye out for rally cars while
in the forest, they use some of the same
roads you do. Maintain a safe following distance to avoid stones potentially
damaging your vehicle, especially
when travelling behind rally cars as
their tyres a prone to throwing up stones
and rocks.

The VWSA test track stage is a new
addition to the annual Volkswagen
Rally. This is where VWSA evaluate
their production cars to give the public
the best cars possible in today’s market.
With the VW Polo being the top seller
in SA for some time now, it proves how
demanding this track is and it should
prove a worthy test to the best rally
drivers and their cars in South Africa.

Culturama: Stage 2
The Infamous Culturama Stage, this has
been the stage that has formed the basis of the Volkswagen Rally for years.
One cannot imagine a VW rally without it.
To be crowned King of Longmore, the
competitors will have to start with this
stage. It is a fast rollercoaster stage
with a loose gravel topping. Added to
the mix are some sheer drops, trees
hugging the side of the road, a blind
rise to stop your heart (and your car) if
not taken at the right angle, and the
weather gods will have a say too.

Fountains Mall has been host to the

This is a typical parking lot stage with
cars coming dangerously close to some

After an absence of five years, the

Viewing is accessible from various vantage points. Spectator safety is the rally
organiser’s main concern and the responsibility rests on the spectators to
obey the marshals. Road crossing will
be allowed in a controlled manner by
the marshals, listen to them when it is
safe to cross the road.
Do not stand in a place that is unsafe.
Remember that the rally drivers are

happen very fast.

2012’s opening stage will open proceedings for the second day. Starting with wide and open roads, the
crews will wind their way to the
spectating point on a fast
rollercoaster ride, thereafter the road

Hangpad: Stage 10
A compact stage but with no less bite
than the others. Crews will make a tight
hairpin right and then into 90left corner where the roads drops down into
deep water splash followed by a very
slippery 90degree left corner. Almost
guaranteed action for spectators, and
some heart stopping moments for the
crews. The hairpin corner is unofficially
known as Serge’s corner.
The access road to this spectating point
is part of the Sinkdam stage being run
later as stage 12. Spectators will have
to evacuate the spectating point before
car zero comes through, or be stuck in
the stage until stage 12 is completely
finished.

Once inside the Longmore Forest, proceed to point G on the spectator map
(located on page four). Spectating is at
this point, Serge’s Corner (Point G).
Blouberg: Stage 11
This is the only repeat stage of the
rally where crews can try and go
faster than their first run. Late chargers can attempt to mount a lastminute attack here as there are just
two more stages left to go.
How do I get there?
Once in the Longmore Forest, proceed to Point E (Jellypad) in the forest.
Refer to the spectator map on page
four to follow the points and arrive
at Point E.
Walk down and turn left for another
100 metres to the hairpin corner.
PPC: Stage 9
Stage: 24.12km
1st car: 11:44
S33°49.662'
E25°07.635'
In two words, a Tough Hillclimb. This
stage climbs uphill mostly over very
rocky terrains. Looking after tyre wear
will be important factor for the crews.
Spectators will see the cars approach
at maximum speed over a blind rise
where the road falls down where they
will brake very hard into very tight left
corner.
The access road to this spectating point
is part of the Blouberg stage being run
later as stage 11. Spectators will have
to evacuate the spectating point before
car zero comes through, or be stuck in
the stage until stage 11 is complete.
How do I get there?
Follow the N2 to the Hankey turn-off,
stop, turn right and then the first right
again onto gravel. This route will take
you to the Longmore Forest. Proceed
until Point D on the Longmore Forest
map on page four. The spectator point
is two kilometres from this point.
MESSAGE FROM
THE ORGANISERS
As organisers we wish you
happy and enjoyable spectating. The Algoa Rally Association membership has worked
hard to make this event happen. Even so, without the commitment and support shown
by the people who own the
land on which the event happens, the rally could not take
place.
Please drive considerately and
remember: open-fire braais
are not allowed at all and
smokers must please dispose
of their cigarette butts carefully, especially in the forest. If
you are keen to get involved
in motorsport, contact Mark
Irvine at

Tuesday of the month at

Sinkdam: Stage 12
As the final forest stage this provides
the rally crews with their last realistic
opportunity to close in on, or race away
from, their rivals. The road will be in
good condition for some fast times.
There is a very much talked about Blind
Rise that has built up a reputation over
years. The target time for this stage is
10:34.7 set by Sinkdam’s most regular
winner, Johnny Gemmel in 2011.
In view of the high speeds attained by the competitors, accidents can happen. The promoters
and organisers of this rally cannot guarantee your safety. You attend the event at your own risk.
Every reasonable precaution has been taken to make the event as safe as possible, but you
must obey marshals and officials at all times to minimise any risks.

Kings Beach: Stage 13
As the finale, the Organisers have decided to make a proper end to a really
tough rally.
The crews will tackle a super special
stage where two cars go head-to-head
on a track with two lanes and a cross
over bridge to swop lanes. Each car will
do both lanes twice.
How do I get there?

Thank you Guy
For the first time in 15 years, Guy
Hodgson will not fill the navigator’s
seat next to Enzo Kuun on the
Volkswagen Rally. Hodgson announced his retirement earlier this
year but, while not actively navigating, will still fill an important role for
the team.
“Guy is a valuable member of the
Volkswagen Sasolracing rally team,”
says Mike Rowe, head of Volkswagen Motorsport. “While he retires
from active duty as a navigator, we
are unwilling to squander his years
of experience and will be putting
that to use in the future.”
“The role a navigator plays on the
stages is crucial, their responsibility
extends far beyond calling instructions,” says Rowe. “Guy is a highly
talented navigator, one of the few
to have set the standard for future
generations – who will do well by
following the example set for them.”
Hodgson has won a number of national championship titles with Kuun,
and also achieved Springbok colours
in 1987 when he won the Tulip Rally
navigating for Dutch driver John
Bosch in an Audi A2 quattro.
“Motorsport, and rallying specifically, is more than a sport,” says
Hodgson. “It is my passion and I
have been privileged to share that
passion both in South Africa and internationally. I believe that along
with the passion for rallying comes
a responsibility to step off the stage
when the time comes.”
“The Tulip Rally was one of the
biggest rallies in the world,” says
Hodgson. “Rally teams well know
the tulip which they often refer to in
their rally notes and route schedules.
The Tulip Rally is where the reference
to the tulip originates.”
“The relationship between and
driver and navigator goes far beyond being members of the same
team,” says Kuun. “There is a bond
of trust that develops after years of
competition, success and tense moments in the car. Guy could always
defuse the tension with his quick wit
and sense of humour. This kept us
on track and focused on what we
had to do.”

If you are the ultimate Volkswagen
Sasolracing and Volkswagen Motorsport fan, you can show off your true

attire to the clothing available for purchase.
The clothing range includes t-shirts,
golf shirts for men and women, sweat
shirts, jackets and, of course, caps.
These will all be availble for purchase
on rally weekend, but limited stock is
available so it is best to make your purchase early to avoid disappointment.
There is also a clothing range suitable
for children, so they can also dress up
to match their motorsport heroes.
