THE SKIP SEASON IS ON
TV STATION DISAPPEARS!
Welcome to the June Mailbox. Last time
we told you skip was just around the corner
and now it’s here. It began to trickle in around
the 12th of May and really took off around the
19th. Up here in the northeast we had at least
two openings go into FM and other parts of
North America did much better than we did.
All in all we’re off to a good start and we hope
it keeps rolling in.
Fred Nordquist has some Cuban and
Jamaican FM skip loggings. As a matter of
fact, Cuba on TV has been fairly common so
far this season. Tropo to Cuba has also
happened a few times in May. Roy Barstow
caught WKAQ-2 in Puerto Rico on ch2 on the
evening of the 24th, and two of us in New
England may have seen it at the same time
Roy did.
Let’s hope the rest of the skip season is as
interesting as the beginning was.
Here’s a really great letter that I want to
share with you. It’s from Bob Garchak. Bob
joined a year ago and just renewed his
membership. It goes like this: “Well, here it is,
renewal time for me and believe me the info I
got out of the VHF-UHF Digest was out of this
world (yes, our sources do come from another
solar system -Mike). I really look forward to
the first part of the new month for my copy of
the Digest.
I am able to receive WEMW-LP ch56 in
Greensburg, PA on a daily 24 hr basis 7 days
a week on an old portable black and white set
with bowtie rabbit ears. I believe they are
some 25-30 miles away. I also for years when
they came on the air was able to get WLLSCA ch49 Indiana, PA, which has to be in the
45-60 mile distance, then all of a sudden one
day…nothing. Don’t know if they made some
kind of adjustment to their transmitter tower or
something in my area blocked their signal. I
even called WLLS-TV and I truly think they
thought I was some kind of nut.”
So Bob’s problem got me to wondering.
TV stations don’t just disappear. I got out my
trusty road atlas to find out where Bob’s home
of Jefferson Hills, PA is located. Then I found
Greensburg, then Indiana.
Next I went to http://w9wi.com and began
nosing around over there, looking for clues,
and I found the answer to Bob’s dilemma
staring right at me. Bob is close to Pittsburgh,
and so is Jeannette, PA. And Jeanette is the
home of WNPA-DT, a UPN digital station with
437kw. When WNPA signed on, ch 49 went
to snow. So the moral of the story is this: you
just can’t think analog anymore. DTV is here
and in a couple of years analog won’t be.
MEMBERS AND MORE
We have one new member this time
around and that person is John Lochey from
Grass Lake, MI. John signed up for the
eVUD. Glad to have you with us, John!
During the period 4/15 through 5/18 we
received renewals from Nick Langan (NJ),
Eric Fader (NY), John Hanna (IL), Ken
Onyschuk (IL), Fred Nordquist (SC), Milton
C. Bay (KY), Randy Zerr (FL), Fritze
Prentice (AR), Todd Sprinkman (WI), Jerry
Bond (NY), James Montgomery (IN), Mike
Lapinski (NY), Bob Garchak (PA), Sheryl
Paszkiewicz (WI), Robert Ross (ON), Dan
Oglethorpe (LA) and John Ebeling (MN).
We’ve had some members switching over to
the eVUD from paper
(which is great if you
find the print in the
VUD a bit small). One
or two put in a few
extra dollars for our
Buddy System, and we
thank them! We’ve
also had a couple of
orders
for
Bob
Cooper’s book and Emisoras de FM. Since
we get to keep a few pennies on the sale of
these items, buying one is a good way to help
out the club.
CONVENTION NEWS
Here’s more convention news from your
host, Rick Shaftan.
“We're looking at a bunch of station tours,
perhaps a trip to the Meadowlands AM
transmitter sites if I can get with Paul Mount
to set that up, plus the Sussex County Fair all
weekend so there's lots to do including High
Point 45 minutes up on the other end of the
county.
3
on HD2, then it reverted to the main channel
audio. I think the equipment was ready
before the programming - or maybe the STL
second channel. At the moment it's just dead
air on HD2.
For what it's worth, the JVC KD-HDR1 is a
good receiver on both FM and AM. And, if you
search around, you can get it for as low as
$229. -Craig Healy
I have to charge some kind of registration
fee. Usually that goes to pay for some pizza
dinner. It doesn't work that way here. The
grill will be hopping all weekend with all kinds
of goodies: steaks, burgers, chops, sausages,
dogs, chicken.
We're getting a load of
crawfish shipped in and be frying fish. Of
course there will be lots of beer and soda. My
wife will try to figure out what this will cost and
some fee that makes sure I don't lose too
much money on this.
If you're bringing wives or kids (and whose
wife or kids isn't looking forward to this
weekend?) let me know and I'll figure out a
family rate. If there's anything left over, which
is unlikely, it'll go to the club.
Other activities, besides eating and
drinking, will include an attempt to string a
K9AY (I know that's AM, but you guys will be
around to help) and maybe some other
antennas. Does anyone want to attempt a
Channel 2 Rhombic aimed at Europe? Who
would like to climb up and try to fix my UHF
rotor ten feet over the top of the roof?
Is there any interest in inviting over my
antenna installer...the last of a dying breed, to
share his knowledge about how to put these
things up?”
If you’ve read page two, you’ll notice that
we have a hotel picked for the convention.
We’ll have a place where you can hang out
and relax if you want.
Rick tells us that if you don’t mind
“roughing it”, camping out is permitted in his
backyard.
Email Rick at [email protected] if
you have any questions. Email Keith
McGinnis at [email protected] and
tell him you are going. We need to know
how many will be there.
My experience with the JVC KD-HDR1 is
that HD coverage is pretty dependent upon
what other stations are adjacent to the main
analog signal. On a trip to Indy from Chicago
a few weeks ago, some of the HD signals
dropped out pretty quickly as I got into
northwest Indiana, but these are also stations
that have first adjacents in that direction. By
contrast, WJMK, which has lean adjacents in
that direction, held on to I-65 mile marker 230,
which is roughly the edge of the outer circle
on that station's map on radio-locator.
The analog signal was very listenable for
about another 20 miles and at east faintly
there down to about mile marker 190.
I haven't had much chance to check with
tropo and Es, but I'm looking forward to it. Glen Hale
Programming is a mixed bag. Most of the
HD2 channels I've heard are niche jukebox
stations -- all 80s, classic country, all dance -stuff like that.
I think the biggest negative to HD2 is
bandwidth constraints. Generally, HD2s I've
listened to sound like decent quality Internet
audio streams and they pull bandwidth from
HD1s too, negating the sound quality
advantages that are clearly noticeable on
stations that don't multicast.
I don't know if Ibiquity will do
enhancements to the codec used, or if any
current receivers can be updated if they do.
Also, Ibiquity is now offering $25 off to
people who purchase certain models of HD
radio through the end of July. With some of
the prices on the JVC, that will get you right
around $200. I think it's a great deal at that
price.

-Glen Hale
EVALUATING HD CAR RECEIVERS
By the way, on the evaluations of HD
receivers that have appeared recently, it
seems like two things are missing: what's the
HD range compared to the analog range
(and it would be nice to also get a comparison
when medium and heavy tropo is going on as
well as Es). And are the new Hd programming
worth listening to or are just the S.O.S.
(Same Old Stuff). Knowing what happens
with broadcast radio, if it isn't S.O.S. now, it
will be farily soon. –Joe Fela
My experience with both the JVC KDSHX900 and the JVC KD-HDR1 is that HD
coverage is half or less the radius of decent
analog. This holds true for both FM and AM.
The few Boston area HD2 signals I've
heard are pretty much the same things.
Nothing so far worth buying a radio for
specifically. WWBB-101.5 in Providence just
turned on HD2 in the past few days.
Yesterday there was dead air for quite a while
That’s all for this time. We’ll let you stare at
this old WBBM test pattern for a while. -mike

stations whose analog and interim DTV allotments
were both “outside core”, or where one was
outside core and the other low-band VHF, or both
were low-band. Also involved were stations that
were too new to receive an interim DTV
assignment. And, two new DTV-only stations
whose sole assignment is outside core.
Thanks to Fritze Prentice, Jeff Kitzko, and Brock

month's column.

Note several applications for new full-license
stations this month. Digital permits have been
applied for in Colorado, Florida, and Kansas, with
the Florida station to be on channel 3. Analog
applications are for Colorado, Kansas, Minnesota,
Mississippi, and Oregon.

One might expect some of these analog applicants
to modify their permits to digital if granted. Also,
the permittee for a new full-license station in
Memphis has filed to replace their analog permit
with a digital one.
Yes, there are permits for two different low-power
stations on the same channel (20) in Flagstaff,
Arizona. The stations are some distance apart; I
would presume they use directional antennas to
protect each other...
KDMI-DT is not adding MyNet to a subchannel.
This Des Moines station is a standalone digital –
with no existing analog signal – and will be running
MyNet on their main program.
The filing window for LPTV digital “companion
channels” has been rescheduled for the 19th
through the 30th of this month. The freeze on
LPTV changes and applications for new LPTVs
was to run through May 12th; it has been extended
to June 30th.
Companion channels will be allotted in Auction
#85. Non-commercial LPTVs may bypass auction
if they certify the station is owned & operated by a
municipality and will be used to transmit only noncommercial, educational programs. However, the
proposal must not be mutually-exclusive with any
proposal from a commercial LPTV. Certified noncommercial applications that conflict with
commercial applications will be returned as
unacceptable for filing.
The protected contour of the DTV proposal must
overlap the protected contour of the station's
existing analog signal. It appears that companion
channels above 51 will be acceptable if no
700MHz land-mobile licensees are affected.
(however, these channels are still going away at
some point, probably early 2009)
Again, this is only for those LPTVs that choose to
operate analog and digital facilities simultaneously
during the transition. Many LPTVs have already
chosen instead to “flash-cut” - to, at some future
point, shut off their analog signals and start a
digital station on the same channel. You saw
many of these applications in last month's VUD.
The FCC has released the 2nd round permanent
DTV channel designations. Many of these involve

If the permit expires unextended... well, I'm not 100%
sure what happens. Definitely the FCC won't protect
them from interference beyond the coverage area of
the 2.54kw temporary facility.
WVCY could
presumably get their permit modified to specify the
temporary facilities as permanent.
WVCY could take their chances this way. If no other
station on or near channel 22 files for a power
increase, it could be that WVCY could file for an
increase later, once they had the resources to build it.
I don't know if the special temporary authority has any
life after the underlying full-power permit expires. It is
possible that, if that's allowed to happen, WVCY's
authority to operate a DTV station could lapse
altogether.
They could continue to operate the analog station on
channel 30 until the February 2009 drop-dead date
but would then be forced off the air. They could also
file for a new DTV permit but if the original permit had
expired, the new application would be on the same
basis as any other new station applicant – VCY would
almost certainly face several competing applications
– and FCC action before the 2009 deadline is not
likely.
(I also would not rule out the possibility they're simply
trying to scare their audience into thinking the station
will go away if they don't donate – the possibility that
there is in fact no financial crisis and no risk of not
completing their 196kw facility.)
* this is a DTV-only station with no analog channel.
Bill also asked about the programming on the channel
61 station licensed to Rochelle, Illinois. (WCHU-LP)
Again, this station is actually transmitting from the
Sears Tower in Chicago.
Last info I had was that
WCHU was running a test pattern, but I've since
heard rumors of programming without any indication
of what kind of programming.
Bill Draeb is seeing an announcement on WVCY-30
in which they're attempting to raise funds for their
permanent digital transmitter. They're saying that
th
they must have this transmitter on the air by the 30
of this month. Presumably that's when their DTV
construction permit expires.
WVCY is apparently
operating under a special temporary authority for
2.5kw.
Steve Rich notes that WTTV-DT 48 in the
Indianapolis area is currently installing their full-power
permanent DTV transmiter. A crew is to install the
permanent antenna by the beginning of this month.
What happens if the DTV permit does expire??
Extensions are possible if extenuating circumstances
exist, but lack of funds is generally not considered
grounds for an extension. (zoning problems, bad
weather preventing tower work, failure of suppliers to
deliver equipment on time have been accepted. A
FM station in Texas recently received an extension
because their transmitter site was infested with killer
bees!) An extension must be requested before the
permit expires; it's very rare for the Commission to
"resurrect" an expired permit.
I mentioned on the WTFDA Internet list that my local
WUXP-DT 21 has added "The Tube", a music-video
service on their 30-2 subchannel. John Lentz says
WCGV-DT in Milwaukee has done the same, and a
press release on the Sinclair website reports many
other Sinclair stations are doing the same.
A bit of skip to start the season! Good DX...

What? You thought just because there was no FM News last month that you would be without May’s FM dial
changes? Of course not. The following is a two-month combined edition of FM News. Both May and June are
included here, separated. Flip ahead seven pages for June. In addition to the double issue, other changes this
month include the separation of Canada’s and the United States’ news. The US will continue to include
territories. If your state/province is not included in an issue, assume it simply has no changes for that month.
Upon request, I am doing my best to include format changes in here. Please understand that not only is this a
major hassle (in addition to the 15+ hours it took to complete this edition alone) but resources aren’t always
reliable, up-to-date, or in existence. Format changes and call letter changes are typically the most important to
a DXer, especially with E-Skip in full swing... and stations sometimes drift toward another format unofficially
without reporting it. Either way, I’ll do my best to throw in anything I see or can find.
You may notice that this month, especially the June news, may contain some double postings and even some
contradictions. My apologies. Organizing my raw data was like a stroll through a mine field this month.
For those who have Internet access: FM News has and always will have special formatting. City names are in
bold, state/province headings are highlighted, sometimes in colour. The hard copy VUD has never shown this
easier-to-read formatting; the online VUD version does. To uphold my formatting, I’ve had to make the font
smaller than it has been in the past. The online version allows for the font to be shown as large as you wish.

Thanks to all who contributed this month. As of
this writing folks on the east coast are getting
some pretty incredible Es, so some long columns
should be in order over the next few months. Now
if only that stuff will make it’s way west! See y’all

This report is for April 2006. The winter-season instability
continued, with very little tropo conditions along the
Southern California coast to San Diego/Tijuana (up to
200mi/320km). From about Apr 27 into early May,
however, the Winter rains have stopped with summertype fog stability setting in, but still no tropo. Maybe no
definite atmospheric layering yet, I am guessing, and
also, there is not much temperature difference yet which
would be helpful (not very warm yet in upper air layers or
inland away from the ocean).
Note 1 *Str = SUPER TROPO! I first thought this was
previously ID’ed Monterrey, but then I saw the supered
ID upper right and my jaw hit the floor! A new tropo
distance record, and UHF #500!
th
The Gulf was wide open the night of April 17 , and Bill
Hepburn’s maps showed pink from the LA coast down to
Veracruz. I’m sure that other 7 XEW was also Las
Lajas, but I never saw an ID. It was fading in and out
and mixing heavily with XHAB. WPTV-DT was also a
shock. I’ve gotten the analog by Es, but never tropo. I
sent the engineer a note, but never got areply. Didn’t
see previously logged WXEL-42 or any other E. coast
stations,
either. Totals up to 756.

So, who turned on the switch? The 2006 Sporadic-E Season seemed to
come a bit late, much to everyone’s chagrin. As I mentioned last month, 2005, a
year of unspectacular conditions, brought the first opening of the Season April
27th. But, this year, the 27th came and went quietly. As April turned into May…
still nothing. “Had the Season been cancelled,” I often wondered. It wasn’t until
nearly mid-May – the 11th, to be exact – that the band finally opened up.
Here in Memphis, the first opening of the Season was not unusual. Just
like last year, it brought in a few stray signals from the Phoenix area. It did give
me a chance to shake out my new toy – the Icom PW-1 amplifier -- putting as
much as 1 kilowatt at my fingertips. While I think that kind of power is a bit
excessive, it’s fun to let it “loaf” at 300 or 400 watts. It gives one a little extra
punch, without getting silly. But, Boy Howdy… at 1 kW, folks will hear you!
Despite the late start of the Season, what has followed opening day has
been pretty good, really. For me, two new grids were logged on the 14th, with an
opening to the north. My first EN47 contact came at 1716 UTC with KB0QS in
Minnesota. Later at 1736, I logged EN85 with W8KLM in Alpena, MI. While the
openings in the following days were fairly routine, I did manage a couple of new
grids with QSOs with VE5TLW in DO70, Saskatchewan, on the 18th UTC and
XE2AT in DL81 from Mexico on the 20th UTC.
Other WTFDA members have also been working the E-layer. This month
we have short 6m reports from Doug Smith,W9WI, in metro-Nashville, and John
Tudenham, W0JRP, from Missouri. We hope to hear from other WTFDA
members soon, perhaps including the crop of newly-minted New Jersey hams
who frequent our lists. Elsewhere across the country, 6 meter operators in the
Northeast seem to be doing the best, with very good openings into the Caribbean
basin and even Europe in May. May 23rd was particularly intense, with reports of
strong North America to Europe contacts popping up all day. It’s enough to
make one want to move! The West, though, has been pretty quiet so far.
May has been fairly kind for tropo, too. You may have seen some of the
jaw-dropping stuff that Randy Zerr, KW4RZ, in Fort Walton Beach, FL has been
getting of late along the Gulf Coast. If I lived where Randy does, I am not sure I
would ever get any work done! Fortunately, Memphis did get a nice taste of
tropo Sunday morning, the 21st. I work up early (too early, really), and was
greeted with amazing signals from Florida. After a quick CQ on 144.200, I was
surprised to be answered by Sam, KD4ESV, south of Tampa, at 5 or 10 dB over
S9. Yikes! I did manage a couple of new 2 meter (144 MHz) grids that I missed
in the last big Florida opening. At 1035 UTC, I snagged EL97 with KG4TBQ; and
at 1115 UTC, KI4HRO in Tampa gave me EL88. Otherwise, I worked several
others from Florida and Texas grids already in the log. Sadly, I had to leave for
Sirius® at 8am Central, but other local operators tell me the opening just kept on
going. As late as noon, Memphis-area hams were still hearing and working
Raphael, XE2OR, in Northern Mexico – that’s nearly 800 miles in the middle of
the day. Wow. Meanwhile, Randy in Florida was working grids deep into Texas.
It was quite an opening.
Contests
44
With the warm Summer weather and better VHF propagation, there are a
few really fun contests coming up. Contests often bring new people to the
bands, and often unheard grids – a great way to inch toward VUCC. They are
also big fun.
June 10-12. ARRL VHF Contest. This is a HUGE contest. If the Es heats up, 6
meters will be mass hysteria! Tropo on 2m, too, would create tremendous
activity. Check the times and rules at:
http://www.arrl.org/contests/rules/2006/june-vhf.html
June 17-18. SMIRK QSO Party. This 6 meter-only contest is sponsored by the
Six Meter International Radio Klub (OK, they’re hams; they don’t have to spell
well!). While not as busy as the ARRL contest, the SMIRK contest, too, can be
fun if the ionosphere cooperates. Full rules can be found at: www.smirk.org.
June 24-25. ARRL Field Day. For many hams, this is THE BIG ONE. Amateur
operators will set up in parks, fields, parking lots, and the like to play with radios,
cook out, swill beer, swat flies, get a sunburn, and just generally have a good
time. This is an HF and VHF contest, but, many teams have found that the
occasionally-neglected VHF frequencies can bring much-needed points. Good
conditions bring lots of stations on VHF, often from interesting places. Even if
you’re not a ham, anyone interested in radio is welcome at Field Day sites. Stop
by and meet local hams; they’ll try to recruit you! Full rules are at:
http://www.arrl.org/contests/rules/2006/rules-fd-2006.html

TELEVISION’S PIRATES: HIDING BEHIND YOUR
PICTURE TUBE
BY BOB COOPER
What is a Television Pirate?
By Oxford definition, a pirate is “a person who infringes
another’s copyright or other business rights” and/or
“someone who broadcasts without official authorization.”
Television programming carries copyright, television stations
travel a years-long pathway seeking “official authorization”
before broadcasting. Alas, not every television station has
waited for, nor even sought, authorization, and it goes
without saying, contacting those who’s copyright might be
violated by their transmissions. Many figures in recent
history (Winston Churchill) met our definition.
Tens of thousand have been driven by their intense desire to
have, for their own, access to television. Cable TV began as
piracy. Satellite TV was driven by rampant piracy. And now
the Internet is spooked by those who would “broadcast” with
authorization. This is their story.
