Historic City
The Siege
Derry also known as Londonderry is one of the longest
continuously inhabited places in Ireland. The earliest
historical references date to the sixth
century A.D. when a
monastery was founded
there by the great
Irish saint
Columba/Colmcille
(521-597). The
name Derry
derives from the
old Irish word
‘Daire’ meaning an
oak grove,
particularly an oak
grove on an island
totally surrounded by
water or peat bog.
During the seventeenth century
the City withstood three
sieges. The dramatic
opening of the third
and most
memorable siege
began on the 7th
December 1688
when the regiment
stationed in
Londonderry was
relieved and its Jacobite
replacement was seen
approaching the city. In the confusion that arose, if it
had not been for the actions of a group of young
‘apprentice boys’ who seized the keys of the city and
locked the gates against the advancing Catholic troops
the Jacobite forces may have gained entry into the city
by the Ferryquay Gate.

The City Walls
The most visibly striking historic feature of the city is the
historic walls. It is the only remaining completely walled
City in Ireland and one of the finest examples of Walled
Cities in Europe and they have been kept in a splendid
state of preservation.
The Walls were built by The Honourable The Irish Society
as defences for early seventeenth century settlers from
England and Scotland – the settlement was a plan of
Plantation by James I. The building of the city was
financed by the trade Guilds of the City of London and
work began in 1613 and finished in 1618 under the
supervision of Sir Edward Doddington of Dungiven. The
prefix London was thus added to the name of the city
and the city of Londonderry became the jewel in the
crown of the Ulster Plantations.
The Walls which are approximately 1.5km in
circumference form a walkway around the inner city and
provide a unique promenade to view the layout of the
original town which still preserves its Renaissance style
street plan to this day.
The four original gates Shipquay,
Ferryquay, Bishop and Butcher
gates have all been rebuilt
and three new gates
added – Magazine, Castle
and New Gate. There
are cannon mounted
throughout the Walls
most notably above
Shipquay Gate. These
were donated by the
Guilds of London in
1649. The Cannon have
recently been restored
and the City now holds
one of the finest collection of
Cannon in Europe.
This began the longest city siege in
British history (known as the 105
day siege). The Siege came to
an end on the 29th July
when the ship the
Mountjoy under the
captaincy of Michael
Browning broke through
the constructed boom on
the River Foyle and brought
relief to the city (‘The Relief of
Derry’). The Siege was over but
it has left its mark on the traditions
of the city to the present day.
Emigration
During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries the port
of Derry became an important embarkation point for
Irish emigrants setting out for America. Some of these
founded the colonies of Derry and
Londonderry in the state of New
Hampshire. Given the city’s strategic
North Atlantic location it was
undoubtedly the main Irish port
for transatlantic emigration with
main destinations to
Philadelphia & Charlestown,
South Carolina in the United
States of America. There was
also direct emigration to
Liverpool (England) and to
Hobart (Australia) from 1820.
The emigration trade
expanded in the 19th Century
with the onset of the Irish
Famine (1845–49) with
emigrants setting out for
Canadian Ports with the locally based
Cooke & McCorkell lines who carried 21,000
passengers between 1847–1867 having the most
sizeable fleets. The emigration statues relating to this
period can be found in Waterloo Place.
World Wars
The outbreak of World
War II had a profound
effect on all aspects of
life in the city. The
city was the most
westerly naval base
involved in the war
and acted as a deep
water port and safe
anchorage for the allied
forces. The city was a thriving
naval base and by 1941
some 20,000 sailors of
various nationalities
were based at the
port. Derry was
selected for the
surrender of the
German U-boats fleet
at Lisahally and this
marked a symbolic period
in the city’s history. A War
Memorial to all those who died
during World War I & II is located in the Diamond area.
The city still retains historic links with the US Navy to
this day.
The Living History
A Living History tour gives you an insight into the impact
the last thirty years have had on the city. The events of
this period have been paramount in shaping the modern
European city of today – a friendly, forward looking and
vibrant city. The symbolic Hands Across the Divide Statue
is a poignant reminder to both
communities about reaching
out the hand of
friendship. A look at
the famous murals
throughout the city
centre which have
had the world’s
media attention
are testament to
the role Derry
played during ‘The
Troubles’. Both in the
Bogside (where the
Bogside Artists have
depicted key events of the
troubles since the late
1960’s on murals
around Free Derry
Corner) and the
Fountain areas the
communities have
today used this
type of pictorial
representations on
murals to illustrate
key events impacting
on the city during this
period.
The story of Bloody Sunday together with the city’s
resurgence and optimism with the onset of the peace
process not to mention the major developments over
the last few years that have ensured that the city’s
history and culture both past and present is a shared
and unrivalled one, unlike any other place in Ireland.
Beyond the City
After having visited the city visitors have an excellent
variety of touring itineraries from which they can
choose, whilst using Derry as their base. The city is
ideally located, acting as a springboard into some of
Ireland’s most dramatic and evocative landscapes from
picturesque county villages, to the breathtaking hills of
Donegal, the spectacular vistas along the Antrim Coast
and the mountainous terrain of the Sperrins, all of which
can be found within an 80km radius.
There are a number of distinctive traditional county
villages not far from the city in scenic rural locations
that are also worth a visit namely Ardmore, Drumahoe,
Claudy, Park, Feeny and Eglinton.
Nearby is Ness Woods home to Northern Ireland’s
largest waterfall.
Derry/Londonderry offers
visitors an unrivalled
historical and cultural
experience of any city in
Ireland. ‘So go on – be
seduced, enjoy the laughter,
revel in the culture and make
a little history of your own’.

The Guildhall
Three local artists Tom Kelly, William Kelly and
Kevin Hasson (known as the Bogside
Artists) have created The People's Gallery
in the Bogside area of Derry. It is a series
of large-scale murals depicting the key
events in Northern Ireland since 'The
Troubles' began in October 1968. The
famous wall-paintings span the entire
length of Rossville Street in the heart of
The Bogside and they present a window
into the politics, people and history of
Northern Ireland. The majority of the
Bogside Murals reflect events that occurred
in the Bogside in the past and one mural
– The Peace Mural looks to the future
with the idealist image of a dove. The
artists have a studio in the Bogside
located behind the Bogside Inn.

Where to Dine
including licensed premises
The choice of places for formal and
informal dining is remarkable for a city
of its size. There are hotel restaurants
with award-winning chefs specialising
in New Irish and European Cuisine;
there are family restaurants famous
for generous portions and traditional
Sunday roast lunches; plus a range of
Italian, Indian and Chinese restaurants.
Pub fare is also of high quality in a
city where the publife is extra special there's probably no other town or city
in the North where 'the perfect pint'
is the order of the day in nearly
every bar!
Derry's exuberant 'pub culture' has
proven to be a major attraction for
an ever-growing number of younger
tourists. Socialising is never a problem
in a city where there is a huge variety
of pubs and clubs and an unequalled
selection of live music.
Please note: all prices are correct at
time of going to press but are subject
to change. Restaurants are divided into
four price bands for the average cost
of a three course meal. In general all
premises offer lunch time specials.
