Page 3 • Fairlawn Area Chamber of Commerce Newsletter • July/August/September 2015 from the president Are you Practicing Slight Edge Thinking? Hello Membership, Taken From “The Slight Edge” by Jeff Olson The Fairlawn Area Chamber of Commerce is having a wonderful year thus far and it looks to continue on the same path. The Before 9 held at the Racers Firestone Stadium proved to be informative and enjoyable with the team on site to talk with our members that attended. We hope they have a stellar season! The After 5 Ribbon Cutting at Ray’s Place was well attended with delicious food and beverages served. It is my hope to see all of your faces at our upcoming events that promise to be exciting. The Slight Edge is a way of thinking that enables you to make the daily choices that will lead you to the success and happiness you desire. Learn why some people make dream after dream come true, while others just continue dreaming and spend their lives building dreams for someone else. The Slight Edge is not just another self-help tool for traveling the path to success. It is the doorway to creating powerful results in any area of your life, by using tools you already hold within you. I had the great pleasure of presenting (4) $1000 scholarships to four accomplished students at Copley High School which were made possible through funds raised from the 23rd Annual FACC Golfing for Education. How rewarding it felt to present those young folks with help towards their higher education. Here are some nuggets to ponder from The Slight Edge: • There are two kinds of habits: those that serve you, and those that don’t. • You have choice over your habits through your choice of everyday actions. • The way to erase a bad habit is to replace it with a positive habit. • Here are 7 powerful, positive slight edge habits: I am excited about the new Community Connection Committee for the FACC being chaired by Leslianne Love. This committee is geared towards yet more giving back to our local communities with the first event, “Stuff the Bus”, being held on Saturday, August 8th from 10a-2p at the Roundabout at Summit Mall. There will be entertainment and goodies available while we attempt to stuff two busses with school supplies for the Copley and Revere schools. With the help of the committee and volunteers we hope this will be a successful event so mark your calendars. Speaking of calendars, don’t forget to attend the Fairlawn 4th of July Parade being held on Saturday the 4th. If you are a member, you can be in the parade free of charge in our FACC division. Remember the fireworks are always the Sunday before the 4th, which will be June 28th. Make sure you attend our monthly luncheons to network and hear a slate of exciting upcoming speakers. We thank all of the members who took the time to fill out the surveys at the May luncheon as this will assist the board with making sure your FACC membership is fulfilling. Visit and “like” our Facebook page to keep you informed of all of the great things going on within FACC. Feel free to contact me with questions or concerns as I am happy to help. Enjoy your summer and we will see you at the meetings. o o o o o Show up: be the frog who jumps off the lily pad. Show up consistently: keep showing up when others fade out. Chris Schroeder LIFE Leadership Independent Member 330-603-0428 – Stow, Ohio www.lifeleadership.com/61326651 Arbitration: A Cost-Efficient Alternative to Litigation of Workplace Disputes For both employers and employees, litigation of workplace disputes in court can be time consuming, drawn out, and very expensive. An often welcomed alternative to litigating disputes is binding arbitration. More and more frequently, employers are asking their employees to sign arbitration agreements. Arbitration agreements require those who sign them to resolve any disputes by binding arbitration rather than in court before a judge or jury. While arbitration does not take place in a courtroom, it does resemble a trial in the sense that disputes are presented to a neutral party (an “arbitrator”) who hears the case and renders a final decision or award. The benefits of arbitration are numerous. Arbitration is less formal and adversarial than a court proceeding, which can help preserve the relationship between the parties in the aftermath of a dispute. Rather than submitting the case to a jury with no legal background, the parties generally have the option of selecting an arbitrator who has experience or expertise in the subject matter of the dispute. The amount of documents and information exchanged between the parties (referred to as “discovery”) is limited in an arbitration setting, whereas parties engaged in litigation often must provide each other with significant amounts of discovery relating to their claims and defenses, which is both time consuming and incredibly expensive. Additionally, arbitration is private; there is no public record of the proceedings or decision and parties have the option of agreeing to keep the proceedings confidential. Arbitration also often provides a much quicker resolution than litigation in that rather than waiting for their turn to be heard in court, parties are able to arbitrate as soon as they have prepared their case. There is much more finality provided by arbitration. A court order or jury verdict may be appealed which can extend the length of a dispute by months or even years. Due to state and federal arbitration laws that limit court intervention as well as laws facilitating enforcement of arbitration awards, binding arbitration decisions are, as their name would suggest, generally unappealable. What does all of this mean for employers? Arbitration saves both employers and employees significant time and expense and allows them to more rapidly resume the working relationship or, if the situation dictates, sever ties cleanly. Courts have consistently upheld arbitration agreements and employers should consider them as an alternative to resolution of disputes in court. Eggs Add eggs to your greens in lieu of more expensive protein sources like chicken. In addition to the hunger-quelling effects of the whites, the yellow center is an abundant source of a fat-fighting nutrient called choline. It works by suppressing levels of the hunger-stoking hormone leptin, which fuels between-meal cravings. Yolks also increase your body’s absorption of heart-protecting, cancer-fighting antioxidants called carotenoids, found in popular salad veggies like broccoli, Brussels sprouts, kale, carrots and sweet potato. 3. Berries According to two recent animal studies, consuming a diet rich in polyphenols–a naturally occurring chemical found abundantly in strawberries, blueberries and raspberries–can decrease the formation of fat cells by up to 73 percent! While we can’t be certain the same will hold true in humans, the sweet fruits are also filled with water and fiber—two nutrients that help ward off hunger—so there are proven benefits to adding them to your plate of greens. 4. Peaches Throw slices of a delicious, juicy peach into your greens. According to Texas A&M University researchers, the stone fruit contains phenolic compounds that modulate different expressions of genes to ward off obesity, high cholesterol, inflammation and diabetes—now that’s something to feel just peachy about! 7. Canned Tuna Add some chicken of the sea to your greens. Sure, ounce-for-ounce it has two fewer grams of protein than the classic bird, but its nutritional profile more than makes it for it. Tuna is a primo source of docosahexaenoic acid, a powerful omega-3 fat that can shrink—and eventually kill off—young fat cells in the belly, according to Journal of Nutrition research. Worried about the mercury? Canned tuna is considered a “low mercury fish” and can safely be enjoyed two to three times a week, according to the FDA’s most recent guidelines. In addition to the suggestions above, try new types of greens. There are tremendous amounts of choices including Kale, Arugula, Leaf, Romaine, Spinach, Endive, to name a few. Take a trip to the produce section of the supermarket, or go to a farmer’s market stand and pick out as many colors as possible of fruits and veggies for your salad. The more color you add the larger the variety of nutrients you are adding to your diet. Salads are the fastest and easiest way to consume the most abundant variety of balanced nutrition with the fewest amount of calories. Laura Palmer Weigh 2 Wellness www.Weigh2Wellness.com / 330.701.0734 Article information from Dana Leigh Smith, Eat This Not That Lifting Weights: Not Just for Men Too many times I hear women say, “I don’t want to lift weights because I don’t want to bulk increase in muscle, bone, and joint strength can help to decrease risk of falls and fractures. up.” Not only will this not happen, but you’re depriving your body of a crucial aspect of its health and wellness. Because of a female’s estrogen levels, it is very difficult to “bulk up.” Men are able to get those big muscles that so many women want to avoid because of their testosterone levels. While females do produce testosterone, the level is much less than males, which makes it difficult for females to significantly build bulk. But why should women strength train? Lifting weights helps play a role in weight loss. By increasing muscle mass, you can increase the amount of calories you burn throughout the day. Lean mass is increased, body fat is decreased and metabolism is increased. According to the American Heart Association, strength training can lower your risk for heart disease by lowering waist circumference, triglyceride levels and blood pressure. What about cardiovascular athletes? Lifting weights can not only improve athletic performance, but can also help prevent injuries. Strength training can help improve speed, power and even lower muscle fatigue. Strength training can help a runner run faster, a cyclist go that extra mile or a swimmer pull ahead of their opponent with that last sprint to the end. Above all, there is much more to strength training than building big muscles. Strength training also helps strengthen bones and joints, which lowers the risk of developing osteoporosis and helps relieve joint pain common with aging, including arthritis. If strength training is incorporated into a regular exercise routine before menopause, the risk of developing osteoporosis is decreased; however, if you are postmenopausal or experiencing osteoporosis, strength training can still increase bone density and help slow down osteoporosis. This In fact, weightlifting can help you reach your fitness goals in one way or another. Whether it is to lose that extra 15 pounds or just improve your health and feel better overall, adding a strength training routine into your regular workouts can help you get there. Remember to always allow your muscles one day of rest in between training sessions to help prevent injuries and give your muscles time to heal and grow. Happy lifting! Protecting your retirement nest egg and sustaining your retirement income are challenging enough. Taking precautions to help guard your investments from fraud is important. Skepticism Is Healthy Contact your law enforcement agency immediately if you suspect an individual or organization is employing fraudulent actions. People who are older can be common targets for fraud and financial crimes. Scam artists and unscrupulous sales people target seniors, who are often seen as: Investment fraud can take many forms. There are Ponzi schemes, for example, where fraudsters advertise high rates of return on client investments. High payouts may continue until new investors are no longer available. Then the scheme and all the money disappear. Other common schemes to watch out for: • pyramid schemes • scams involving coins and precious metals • ownership interests in oil and gas interests • viatical scams (known as “cashing out” of a life insurance policy, or a “living benefit”) • affinity fraud through community groups, clubs, and even places of worship • Generally trusting • Home alone during the day • Accustomed to answering the door or the phone • Reluctant to report fraud • Confused by online ads and offers Scam artists are well aware of these common perceptions and often use these tactics: • Phone calls • Emails • Personal sales pitches • Pop-up ads on the Internet Here are a few guidelines to follow that may help protect you or a loved one from investment fraud. Proceed with Caution Don’t jump into an investment. Slick websites, smooth-talking solicitors, high pressure sales pitches, and extravagant promises can be misleading. Before investing in any investment product or service, it’s important to consider your overall financial situation. Is the product or service right for you? Be aware of your liquidity needs, fees, and costs associated with an investment. Consider your income needs and the overall risk you can afford to bear with any investment. Beware of Misleading Information There is some wisdom to the old adage, “If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.” Offers of an investment with an above-average rate of return or income rate and little-to-no risk are almost always deceptive. Healthy skepticism is a wise strategy for seniors when approached by any person with a sales pitch. What to Do Wells Fargo Advisors is very concerned about protecting seniors from financial fraud. We believe your financial health is an important aspect of your retirement and that it must be guarded carefully. Even if you don’t suspect the deal or the person is fraudulent, there are a few steps to take before investing your money. End the Conversation Practice saying “no”, or telling the person you always speak with someone else before making decisions. Have an exit strategy. Turn the Tables Ask questions. A legitimate investment professional – as well as his or her firm – must be properly licensed with a regulator depending on the type of business the individual (or firm) conducts. Talk to Someone Stepping away from the situation and asking for another opinion can help you see the true value of an offer. Talk with a Financial Advisor about the ways you can protect yourself or a loved one by monitoring your personal financial information and being selective in providing access to personal data. Some representatives and salespeople may use scare tactics to gain access to seniors’ savings and investments. They may threaten physical or financial harm, use intimidating statements, or call repeatedly. Find out more and print out a pamphlet to read over later. Be wary if the solicitor asks you not to tell anyone else about the investment, tells you it is a one-ofa-kind deal, or that other people (maybe even dropping the names of prominent people in the area) have already bought in to the arrangement. The Better Business Bureau and the FINRA Foundation created a website and pamphlet for seniors and their families to find out more. Visit http://www.bbb.org/smart-investing/ for more tips, and download “Fighting Fraud 101: Smart Tips For Investors”. Services described as a “limited-time offer” or any person who pressures you to make an immediate investment decision should also raise a red flag. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or to seek a second opinion. This article was written by Wells Fargo Advisors and provided courtesy of Michele Gensel, Senior Vice President Complex Manager in Akron, OH at 330-668-7735. Beware of guarantees to make money or to achieve a guaranteed rate of return. Con artists often use promises of high returns to lure people into financial scams. When share price increases, your $1,000 buys fewer; when it decreases, it buys more. • Dollar-cost averaging can remove emotion by creating regular savings. • This is effective with up-and-down periods – if price stays flat, there aren’t dips to buy. Dollar-cost averaging can’t protect against loss in a declining market, so it’s not always appropriate. 2. Certain investments are better for addressing volatility. • Bonds in a bond ladder can mature in intervals. If interest rates rise, investors can use proceeds of a maturing bond to invest at the higher rate; if rates decline, only some of the portfolio will be subjected. 3. One of the best ways to deal with volatility is ignoring it. • Maintaining a long time horizon allows value investors to pay little mind to short-term fluctuations. • For these companies, volatility could be a buying opportunity, though only if share price rebounds. What you should do: These strategies can help, but they also carry risks. I can determine if they’re suitable for you and implement them in a wealth management plan. Robert W.
