The Superintendent’s Message
Welcome to the 2015-2016 school
year! Like most of you, I am anxiously
looking forward to the new school year.
Each new school year brings many new
challenges for our students and our staff.
I am sure that the 2015-2016 school year
will be no exception. The information
in this edition of the Fairlawn Flyer
should be very helpful as you prepare
for the new school year. All of our staff
members have been working hard to
prepare the building and our curriculum
for the students when they return.
This year’s Open House is Monday,
August 17 from 5-8 pm. We hope to
see you there! On the following day,
Tuesday, August 18, school begins!
We have four new teachers on our staff
this year. You will find their pictures and
biographies inside the Flyer. They are
great people and we are happy to have
them as the newest educational members
of our staff. Please make a special point
of meeting them at the Open House.
They are Amber Wehrkamp who will
be our 9-12 Intervention Teacher,
Mary Watercutter who will be our 6-8
Intervention Teacher, D. J. Heintz who
will be our 9-12 Math Teacher, and Matt
Hickman who will be our 6-8 Math
Teacher. Each of these teachers will
bring a special skill set to our staff.
For the last two years, we have been
introducing the concept of gradelevel teams in our school district. This
year, Fairlawn will fully implement the
concept of grade-level teams. There will
be a total of five teams: K-1, 2-3, 4-5, 6-8,
and 9-12. The teachers in these teams

will work together with all students at
their grade level. It is our goal to see
that the teacher who is the strongest
in a particular subject area works with
all of the students in that team in that
particular subject. The teachers will
get to know the children better and
will be able to follow the children for
more than one year and assure mastery
of skills in that subject area. We are
excited to have the opportunity to fully
implement grade-level teams at all grade
levels. Over the last two years, when
we partially implemented grade-level
teams, we learned one important lesson
- they work! We are confident that the
children will achieve at a higher level
than ever before.
Much has been in the press and on
television about testing during the last
year. The budget bill recently passed
by the Ohio legislature and signed into
law by the governor did make important
changes to the testing process for this
upcoming school year. We certainly
do not have all of the details yet as the
Ohio Department of Education works
with the State Board of Education to
implement the new mandated testing
program in Ohio. The details of the
implementation will be shared with
you in future Flyer editions and on our
website. But, this much we do know for
sure, there will still be state testing. It
did not go away. However, there will
be less testing and, in some cases, it will
be done by a different company. The
math and reading tests will no longer
be the PARCC tests (The Partnership

for Assessment of Readiness for College
and Careers). The new math and
reading tests will be AIR tests (American
Institutes for Research). This company
already currently supplies the tests for
science and social studies in Ohio. We
are being told that the state tests for
reading and math will be shorter and
that we will have the results sooner.
Please continue to check with our
administrators and guidance counselors
for answers to your questions. The Ohio
Department of Education’s website will
also be a good resource for answers to
your questions.
This year, we are continuing to grow
many of the fine programs that have
been introduced in the past at Fairlawn.
Last year, we introduced our digital
online Expanded Learning Curriculum.
It was well received by our students.
This year, many more classes are being
added to the curriculum. The additional
classes will offer options to Fairlawn
students that were never available in the
past. Our iPad One-to-One program
is entering year four. This technology
has changed the way students learn at
Fairlawn. This year, we are making more
textbooks available online. When the
student takes their iPad home, they will
have their textbook with them as well.
Digital textbooks are more cost effective
and are able to be constantly updated by
the publisher.
So, again, Welcome Back! Please look
through this edition of the Flyer. I hope
it helps you get ready for the new school

Mrs. Egbert and I hope everyone is having a great summer vacation!
It is time to start looking ahead to a new school year. With that in mind,
please watch for our monthly parent nights. A list will be developed
with the staff and posted on our new website shortly after school starts.
Many of you are aware of the new state budget bill that was signed
into law and became effective as of July 1, 2015. Keep in mind that there
are two areas we want to make sure you know:
▶Fairlawn will continue to administer tests online.
▶PARCC has gone away, however AIR testing will continue
(Social Studies and Science) – AIR has also prepared English/
language-arts and math tests.
Once the state lets us know what the new tests will be, we will be sure
to share the information with parents and students. Please watch for a
testing night.
We encourage all students and parents to attend Open House on
Monday, August 17 from 5-8:00pm.

Identification Of Gifted
Students
This annual notification is in accordance with
the District Policy and Plan for the Identification
of Children Who are Gifted. In Ohio, the term
“Gifted” refers to students who perform or show
potential for performing at remarkably high levels
of accomplishment when compared to others of
their age, experience, or environment and who are
identified following the procedures and criteria
established by the Ohio Revised Code, Section
3324.03. The district uses a three-stage approach to
screen and identify students in the areas of superior
cognitive ability, specific academic abilities, creative
thinking, and visual and performing arts. Students
may be referred for gifted screening on an ongoing
basis by a teacher, parent, or other professional. A
brochure which outlines the multi-stage procedures,
criteria, and assessment instruments is available
upon request in the school office.
Parent Project
For the second year, the Fairlawn
Local School District is pleased to offer
our Fairlawn families the opportunity
to participate in “The Parent Project®”
parent training program. This training
program is free to parents whose
children attend Fairlawn Schools.
The Parent Project® is celebrating
28 years this year and has helped over
one-half million parents struggling
with raising difficult or out-ofcontrol children. The programs were
developed from the experiences and
successes of real parents, not a child
rearing textbook!
The Parent Project® is broken into
two highly-effective programs:
Loving Solutions (Parent Project
Junior) – for parents raising difficult

or strong-willed children 5 to 10 years
old. Parents meet one night a week
for six weeks. Topics in the training
include: Improving Children’s InSchool Behavior and Grades, Media
Issues and Young Children, Sleep, and
Diet and Behavior. Also, parents will
find an informative introduction and
overview that addresses the needs of
children with ADD/ADHD. Training
lasts about two hours per night.
Dates for this program are: October
8, 15, 22, 29; November 5, 12.
Changing Destructive Adolescent
Behavior (Parent Project Senior) - for
parents raising difficult or out-ofcontrol adolescent children, 10 years
old and up. Issues addressed in this
program include: Arguing and Family
Conflict, Poor School Performance,
Truancy, Media Influences, Early Teen
Sexuality, Teen Drug Use, Gangs, Teen
Violence and Bullying and Runaways.
Parents meet one night a week for
10 weeks. Training last for three hours
per night the first six weeks and then
two hours per night the remainder of
the training.
Dates for this program are: January
28; February 4, 11, 18, 25; March 10,
17; April 7, 14, 21.
Facilitators for the training
programs will be Deanna Walker and
Deb Parker.

Celebrate Teaching Award
On June 16, Mrs. Jo DeMotte, Mr. Shawn Hamaker and Mrs. Stacy
Hamaker attended the Battelle for Kids ceremony to honor teachers
from around Ohio.
Criteria for the award was an innovative, creative teacher who shows
student results year after year. Mrs. Hamaker has been a highly successful
teacher at all the grade levels she has taught for the district.
The speaker for the event was National Teacher of the Year, Sean
McComb, who discussed engaging students.
Congratulations to Mrs. Hamaker!
One Call Now Letter
Dear Parents/Guardians:
Effective communication is beneficial to the continuous building
of relationships between educators and parents. Fairlawn realizes
the value of being able to communicate quickly and efficiently with
parents. We currently use the One Call Now Communication Service
to contact parents of our students for emergency notification and
awareness. As we progress with the value of using this system, we will
implement personalized messages to keep parents actively involved in
what is happening at Fairlawn. We will be reminding parents of report
cards, conferences, fundraisers, absences, school delays, closings, early
releases and other events.
The most important thing parents can do is verify the accuracy of
their contact information. Fairlawn must have updated phone numbers
for One Call Now to work effectively and efficiently. Any number
changes must be communicated as soon as they are effective. Please
feel free to call the school and verify that your information is correct.
You can select two numbers for the school district to use as contact
numbers. Many students wish to include their cell phone numbers.
This is possible, but we are asking that you please include a parent/
guardian number also. The One Call Now system has the capability to
contact you at home, work, or cell phone.
Only authorized administrators of the school district may activate the
system. One Call Now keeps all of its clients’ information confidential
and secure. All data is password protected on secure servers accessible
only by school administration. Please update your information for
school use and return to the school.

The Fairlawn Drama Club is once again proud to present our 5th Mystery Dinner Theatre on
October 23, 2015 at 6:30pm. Every year is a different theme and a different mystery to be
solved. You never know what will happen next as you enjoy an evening of dinner and a show.
Murder, mystery, mayhem, and plenty of comedy high-jinxes are in store. You may even be
called upon to help solve the mystery. There are lots of laughs and suspense as we discover
“Who Done It?” Please come out and support the Fairlawn Drama Club.
Dinner will include pulled pork, au gratin potatoes, baked beans,applesauce, your choice of
beverage, and dessert. The price this year is $12 for dinner and show and $8 for carry-out
meals. Reservations must be received no later than October 12, so that we can inform the
caterer of the number of meals to prepare.

The Drama Department will be holding a summer
Drama Camp the week of August 3-7, from 11:00am
– 3:00pm. This is for students in grades 6-12. We
will be learning about acting, singing, dancing, stage
combat, stage make-up, costuming, stage properties
and many other topics related to producing theatre
productions. This is an opportunity to practice
new ideas we’re learning without the pressure of a
performance. At the same time, these new skills can be
used when we begin actual productions for Mystery
Dinner Theatre and the Spring Musical. There will be
no cost to students, but each one is asked to bring a
sack lunch Monday through Thursday. They can bring
in $3 each for pizza on Friday. If you are interested in
attending, please return the form below to the school
office so we know how many students to prepare for.

Auditions for the Drama Club’s Mystery Dinner Theatre for 2015 will be
held the first week of school in order to have time to prepare for the show.
Auditions are open to any students in grades 6 – 12 who might be interested
in being in the one- night production on Friday, October 23. The auditions
will be held on Thursday, August 20. There will be a sign-up sheet
posted in the office for you to pick the time you would like to audition.
All interested students must fill out an audition packet with parental
permission slip included. Students will not be able to try out without a
signed permission slip. The audition times will begin at 3:45pm and will run
in 20-minute sections until we finish. The final selection for the cast will be
posted on Monday, August 24 and a rehearsal schedule will be passed out at

TECHNOLOGY USER POLICY FOR STUDENTS
Students will be asked to sign a new policy each year during which they are students
in the School District before they are given a network access account, a computer usage
account, or may use electronic devices at school.
The Fairlawn Local School District reserves the right to monitor, inspect, copy,
review, and store at any time and without prior notice any and all usage of the computer
network and Internet access and any and all information transmitted or received in
connection with such usage. All such information files shall be and remain the property
of Fairlawn Local Schools and no user shall have any expectation of privacy regarding
such materials.
The use of technology and the network at school is privilege, not a right. Any user
who violates this policy shall, at a minimum, have his/her access to devices or the
network terminated. A user violates this policy by his/her own action or by failing to
report any violations by others that comes to the attention of the user. Fairlawn Local
Schools may also take other disciplinary actions in such circumstances.
Student Network and Internet Acceptable Use and Safety Agreement
1. Use of the network or school property to engage in cyberbullying or any form of
electronic harassment is prohibited. Cyberbullying involves the use of information and
communication technologies to support deliberate, repeated, and hostile behavior by
an individual or group that is intended to harm others. Harassment is any unwanted,
repetitive communications. Both violations will be punishable following student
behavioral guidelines in addition to being punishable for violating the Technology
Usage Policy.
2. While on the school network, use of chat clients, social networking sites, and webbased email are prohibited. This includes, but is not limited to, iMessaging, SnapChat,
Vine, Kik, Facebook, Twitter, et cetera. Students violating this rule will lose network
and/or device privileges and will be subject to administrative discipline.
3. No devices are to be brought into bathrooms, to assemblies, or into locker rooms
at any time.
4. Students may only access their computer or network by using their assigned
network account/password. Use of another person’s account/password is prohibited.
Students may not allow other students to use their account/ password. Students may
not go beyond their authorized access.
5. Students are responsible for their behavior and communication on the
computer/network. Students may not use the network or school property to engage
in transmission, receiving or possession of obscene materials or pornography of any
kind. Students may not send or receive emails that contain inappropriate or obscene
comments, suggestions, or language.
6. Students may not intentionally seek information or modify files, data, or passwords
belonging to other users, or misrepresent other users on the computer/network.
7. Students may not use the network or school property to engage in illegal activities
such as software pirating, peer to peer file sharing (ex: Frostwire, Bit Torents, etc.) and/
or intellectual property violations (ex: music, videos, books, television shows, movies,
etc. which are under copyright). Only public domain software may be installed on
school property with the consent of the principal and director of technology.
8. All communications accessible on the internet should be assumed to be private
property (ex: copy written or trademarked). All copyright issues regarding software,
information, and authorship must be respected. Rules against cheating and plagiarism
will be enforced.
9. Students may not use the network or school property to engage in “hacking”.
Malicious use of the network or school property to develop programs or infiltrate a
computer or computer system and/or damage the software components of a computing
system is prohibited. Students may not use the network or school property to disrupt
its use by others.
10. Students may not bypass or attempt to bypass the district’s technology protection
measures or filters. Students must immediately notify the teacher, the principal, or the
director of technology if they identify a possible security problem. Students should not
seek out security problems because this may be construed as an unlawful attempt to
gain access.
11. Transmission of any material in violation of any state, federal law, or regulation
or board policy is prohibited.
12. Any use of the network or school property for commercial purposes is prohibited.
13. Privacy in communications over the internet and the school network is not
guaranteed. In order to verify compliance with this rule, the school reserves the right
to inspect any directories, files, and/or messages residing on or sent using the school
network or property.
14. Students and parents will indemnify and hold the district harmless from any
financial losses or legal ramification sustained due to misuse of the network or school
property by the students.
15. Use of non-educational games, videos, movies, or games/videos/movies not
assigned by a teacher while on the network or using school property is prohibited.
16. When using the network, school computers, or student-owned specified
electronic devices students must follow the directions of school teachers/staff and
adhere to school policies.
17. Students take full responsibility for personal digital devices at all times. The
school is not responsible for the security of the device.
18. The device may only be used to access files or internet sites which are relevant to
the classroom curriculum.
19. Students must comply with teachers’ request to turn off the device.
20. The school district may collect and examine any device at any time for the
purpose of enforcing the terms of this agreement, investigating student discipline
issues, or for any other school-related purpose.

Mr. Huelskamp Leads Trip to Europe

Social Studies teacher, Mr.
Cory Huelskamp led a group of
11 students and adults to Europe
recently. The group consisted of
the following: Mr. Huelskamp,
his wife, Maribel, Mrs. Parker,
Mrs. DeMotte, Rhea DeMotte,
Hannah Gold, Whitely Burton,
Charlie Vondenhuevel, Kelsey
Zircher, Collin McClain and
Mitchell Lillard.
The group left Cincinnati on
June 19th and arrived in Greece
on June 20th. Students toured
the Acropolis and other Greek
ruins as well as taking a cruise
to the Saronic Sea Islands of
Hydra, Poros and Aegina.
On June 23rd, the group took
an overnight ferry ride to Italy
and spent two days in the city
of Florence. There, they toured
the Academia, the Ufizzi, the
Pitti Palace, the Duomo, the
San Croce and the Piazza della
Signoria.
Then, the group left Florence
and took another ferry ride to
Barcelona, Spain and finished
the tour out seeing the works
of Gaudi including Park Guell,
the La Sagrada Familia and the
fountain light show in front of
the palace.
All in all, it was an amazing
trip and the 12 days flew by very
quickly. Mr. Huelskamp has
made 11 trips to Europe and is
planning the next trip for 2017.

Hollywood Comes to Fairlawn

This summer, the Drama
Club students got to meet,
through video exchanges,
two very talented Hollywood
actors. They are Justin Ray and
Mason Trueblood.
Drama Club Advisor, Shelly
Mann, met Justin Ray through
a series of emails discussing the
drama department and asking

as well as both have starred

They are both accomplished
actors and dancers and
Justin is also an excellent
gymnast.

have our students make a video
that would ask questions the
students wanted to know about
them. That way, they could get
to know our students personally
and connect with who they
were working with. They, in
return, would then send back a
video answering the questions
and giving tips and pointers
about theatre, acting, and
showbiz. This response video
will be shared during Drama
Camp, which is August 3-7.

We had eight students who

Bell, Abbey Goins, Elizabeth
Pestke, Jackie Ceyler, Mya
Elsass, and Kami Hamilton.
We had a great time making it
and we hope it is only one of
many such exchanges we can
have with these two gracious
and talented actors. We look
forward to sharing updates
with you as we learn from real
professionals in the business.

Fairlawn Library Media Center News
Here we are at the end of summer once
again and getting ready for a new school year.
The Fairlawn Library Media Center has been
a busy place since last May. We began the
summer break at the end of the school year
by announcing our summer library program
“Science Detectives.” We also told students
about the Jets Read Program that is running
all through the summer. Then, school was
out and kids began their vacation.
The summer program began on June 3rd
with Ms. Danielle Monnier, middle school/
high school science teacher, sharing about
health science and how exercise affects our
breathing. Students created a hypothesis and
then used balloons, string and meter sticks
to generate data about how much air they
could breathe into a balloon before and after
exercise. The students brainstormed ideas for
the hypothesis and then worked in pairs to
collect their data. They had a great time with
Ms. Monnier. They, then, created some art
work with some materials that Mrs. Swartz
had collected by using glue, tape and staples.
Snacks were also provided each time we met.
On June 17th, Mrs. Tammy Langston came
to share an activity
that used the material
of coffee filters,
water and washable
markers to see how
color
separates
in water through
absorption.
The
students each got five
pieces of the coffee
filter paper and then
shared five different
colored
markers
to draw or write
something on each
paper. They, then, got
medicine droppers
and dropped water
onto the papers to
watch what would
happen and recorded
the results on papers
that Mrs. Langston provided. The students
enjoyed seeing how absorption showed
different colors that are part of each of the
single colors they used. A craft was then
made using watercolors to decorate cotton
disks. Students enjoyed creating their own
designs using the watercolors.
On July 8th, Mrs. Colebaugh came to help
us create garden stones using concrete. We
had molds and all kinds of shiny stones, tiles,
shells, and animals to decorate our stones.
The kids got to mix concrete and see how
much water to add to get the right mix. We

are still waiting to see if they will set up! We
read stories about how seeds grow and what is
needed to grow plants and trees. During our
snack time, we watched an animated version
of The Curious Garden and, then, put parts
of the story in order sequence. The kids also
answered questions about fact and fiction
from the story.
July 22nd and August 5th are our last two
summer program dates. We begin at 4:30
and finish at 6:30pm. Stories and a snack are
always part of the time as well as a take-home
craft and the science activity. July 22nd will be
about science and music and August 5th will
be a chemistry activity
with Mr. Nathan Sailor
and Mr. Chris Clark.

student in grades
Pre-K through Grade
5 in May. The program
runs from May 21st to
August 21st. Forms are
available in the school
office during regular
hours and can be picked
up on the summer
library days from 4:30
to 6:30pm. The forms
are due to Mrs. Swartz
by August 28th and
those who participate
will be eligible for an ice cream sundae party.
Students in grades 6 through 12 had the forms
available to them in the library and their RLA
classes. They can also participate and get ice
cream. Just check in at the office sometime
soon to get a form to fill out with hours and
books read. Again, return it to Mrs. Swartz by
August 28th to be eligible for the ice cream
sundaes.
New books will be arriving soon for
students to read this fall. Come and see
what is new! Student aides are needed in
the library as well this year. Aides would be
helping students find books, checking in and
checking out books and helping students
with activities during library classes. If you
are interested, please see Mrs. Swartz or

can learn how the library system works and
maybe find a new career!
The library is open to all students for
reading and studying all day. Please take
advantage of space to spread out, resources
close by and the peace and quiet. All students
can come to the library during their study
halls. Parents are welcome to see what is
available to students any time. Please stop by
during open house and look around. There is
always something to do in the library!

My name is Julie Geise, I am
Registered Nurse employed by
the Sidney Shelby County Health
Department as a Public Health Nurse
(PHN) for the past 8 years. I have
been a Registered Nurse for 29 years
and a graduate of Mt. Carmel School of
Nursing. Throughout the last 29 years, I
have worked in several fields of nursing

County Health, my main role as a school nurse is to provide nursing
services to Christian Academy, Fairlawn, Hardin-Houston and
Russia schools. I am proud to be associated with these schools and
appreciate how the students, parents, staff and administration of my
schools make me feel I am an integral part of the school community.
School nursing has allowed me to grow as a Registered Nurse.
Unlike nurses in clinical settings, school nurses typically practice
independently under the supervision of a Medical Director. I am
called upon to assess student health, develop and execute plans for
care management, act as a first responder, and engage in public health
functions such as disease surveillance, immunization compliance,
and health promotion. As a school nurse, I am aware of an increase
in students with chronic medical problems and conditions. I feel
the role of the school nurse is vital and considered necessary for the
student to learn in a safe and healthy environment. Each day, I strive
to provide optimum care for my students and staff.
It is a wonderful privilege to work as a School Nurse and to
provide care and nurturing that ensures a healthy environment for
students in which to learn. I welcome the opportunity for parents
to contact me with any concerns or to just introduce themselves to
allow me to get to know them and their student.

With the start of a “brand new day” at Wilson Memorial,
the new name, look and outlook emphasizes the hospital’s
focus on redefining healthcare through proper education and
prevention starting in the community.
“In life, change is inevitable - people change, places change
and names change,” said Stan Crosley, Board Chair. “Change
is a part of life - a part of growth and a part of moving forward.”
Crosley reflected back through years of when Wilson
Memorial Hospital first opened its doors in 1930.
“As Wilson Memorial Hospital changes and grows, it’s
important to reflect on where we began and never lose sight
of what we’ve accomplished.” Crosley said.
After decades of serving Shelby County and the
surrounding communities, Wilson Memorial found itself
poised for resurgent growth and continued success.
“To shift the culture of the hospital to be identified as
a health network with a unified purpose and theme, there
needed to be a change in our messaging and branding,” said
Mark Dooley, Chief Executive Officer.
The new name, look and outlook of Wilson Memorial – the
result of over a year’s worth of perceptional research studies,
interviews and analysis – was introduced today at a public
unveiling event held on the main campus. Attendees at the

taking a year off for personal reasons, I am
refreshed and anxious to collaborate with the
staff, encourage the students, and serve as a
bridge for community resources. Students
in Pre-kindergarten through 5th grade can
expect to see me throughout the year in large
group guidance lessons. During my visits to
the classroom, we will be discussing topics
such as: responsibility, manners, friendship,
bullying, study skills, self-esteem, and
emotions. Students can also visit me in my
office to discuss any issues (friendship, family,
peer, self) that they might be encountering.
My goal is to help the student work through
these issues and re-focus to becoming their
best self. Finally, students can also seek my
guidance if they are struggling academically.
We can come up with a plan to get them back
on track to success.
If your elementary child is new to the
district, please stop by my office during
Open House on Monday, August 17th for
an introduction. If your child is returning to
the district, please stop by my office to share
your favorite summer memory.

Compassionate Care, and SafeHaven to name
a few, Shelby County residents have many
avenues for support. In past years, agencies
have asked us to share their services with
families in our district. Shop with a Cop asks
for students’ names to purchase gifts during
the holiday season to help parents/guardians
if their finances are limited. Charity League
also provides a similar service. Anonymous
donators have asked for a family or two
that they can sponsor during Thanksgiving
to provide a warm, hearty meal. The
counseling department at Fairlawn is happy
to oblige with these requests. Unfortunately,
our desire to help aid families can be halted
without being aware of current situations.
To help these causes, we ask that families
with limited income complete a form (that
can be obtained through Mrs. Inman or Mrs.
Riethman) to give a little background on their
current situation so the Fairlawn counseling
department can connect families to the
appropriate agency. The above mentioned
form is not mandatory for all families -- only
United Way

Dress and Grooming Guidelines
As society’s norms for dress and grooming change, it is helpful
for students and parents to have some guidelines concerning
school policy on controversial questions relating to student dress
and grooming. It is impossible to list all the styles, which might
be considered appropriate for school. Likewise, it is impossible
to anticipate all the questions involving dress and grooming.
Therefore, students are expected to keep themselves clean, well
groomed, and dressed in “good taste.”
The following statements are intended to provide minimal
guidelines for a standard of student dress and grooming. The
major responsibility for meeting these standards is established
at home. Student dress and grooming must meet conventional
standards of dress and modesty during all school functions.
Students who violate the student dress and grooming guidelines
will be instructed to remedy the situation and may be subject to
further disciplinary action.
1. Students should make every attempt to be clean and
well-groomed at all times. Attempts by students to call undue
attention to themselves by unusual, bizarre, or revealing dress
will not be permitted. (Specific examples would include
pants with holes or distressed areas above the knees, pajamas,
or make-up coloring/styling.)
2. Clothing with profane, suggestive, or questionable
pictures and/or lettering is prohibited.
3. Clothing should be worn as designed and should not
display inappropriate parts of the body or undergarments.

4. While on field trips, the teacher/chaperones in

8. No hats or head coverings of any kind unless it is a special
school activity day authorized by the administration.
9. Items, such as dog chokers, dangling chains, jewelry with
sharp points (i.e. studded collars, bracelets, and ear tapers)
are prohibited.
10. Wearing coats is not permitted unless approved by the
administration due to temperature problems in the building.
A coat is anything considered outerwear. If questions arise,
the administration will make the final determination about
what is or is not a coat.
11. Book bags, tote bags, and duffel bags are only to be
carried to and from school. Exception: school-provided
electronic device carrying case. (Medical exceptions may
apply per administration approval.)
12. Shorts and pants with pictures or writing across the
seat are unacceptable.
13. Spandex, yoga pants and leggings are not be worn
unless under dress code appropriate length skirt, shorts, or
pants. TEST: if leggings (etc.) are removed, would the attire
still meet dress code?
The principal shall serve as the arbiter of student dress
and grooming.
Student Drop-off/Pick-up
All parents who are dropping-off or picking-up students must use the parking lot at the front of
the school. The back parking lot is reserved for student drivers.
There are two permissible methods for dropping off or picking up students in the front parking
lot.
1) Parents may park along the sidewalk and students will enter/exit the vehicle at the
sidewalk. Please remain in your car and move forward to free up space as you finish. Students
should use the sidewalk to enter/exit the school area.
2)Parents may park in a parking space, which would allow them to leave their vehicles to
ensure that their students are safely using the crosswalk.
Please do not park in the roadways of the parking lot to drop off or pick up students. Using the parking
lot in this way creates a dangerous situation for all of our students. We are much better able to
monitor students’ safety in the parking lot when traffic flow can be anticipated and when students
who are walking in the parking lot know where to look for moving vehicles. Parking in the roadways
encourages vehicles to pass one another, creating blind spots for students and parents who are
walking in these areas.
In addition, please do not attempt to enter the bus area and collect your student to give him or
her a ride home. If a student who normally rides a bus is going to be picked up, the office must be
notified. It is imperative that we are able to maintain good accountability of our students.
Lastly, we ask that you avoid parking on the student crosswalk or backing into the crosswalk.
This is students’ safe place to cross into the parking lot.

Parent-Teacher Conferences
Monday, November 23rd from 11:00am to 8:00pm
Tuesday, November 24th from 10:00am to 4:00 pm
Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held Monday, November
23rd and Tuesday, November 24th. School will not be in session for
students during those days.
Teachers will have sign-up rosters for conferences in their classrooms
during the District Open House on Monday, August 17th. If you are able
to meet for a conference during the day sessions, please sign up during
those times so we can have more slots available for those who can only
come during evening hours.
As always, we encourage you to bring your students to conferences
so they can take part in the conversations about their education.
Federal Special Education IDEA
Part B Funds
Fairlawn Local Schools receives federal Special Education IDEA
Part B funds to assist with the education of handicapped children aged
3 through 21. Community members who would like to have input
into the planning of the use of the federal IDEA funds are welcome to
provide comment during our public hearing to be held on Thursday,
August 13, 2015 at 6:30 p.m. in Room 122 at Fairlawn Local Schools,
18800 Johnston Road, Sidney, OH 45365.
Custody Rulings
Fairlawn Local Schools is an important part of implementing
custody rulings and needs your help to continue in this role. In order
to stay up to date with the many and ever changing family situations,
please send in any and all changes or updates to the custody status
of your children attending Fairlawn. This paperwork is important in
helping us ensure each and every child gets home to the appropriate
parent/guardian each and every day. As your circumstances change,
Fairlawn wants to change with you. If you aren’t sure what paperwork
we have on file, just give us a call. Thank you.

FAIRLAWN STUDENTS
PERFORM
WITH CIVIC BAND
Recent Fairlawn graduate Sarah Keller and
junior Kami Hamilton are two of five students
from the Shelby County area accepted into the
Sidney Civic Band Apprenticeship Program
for the summer! Both young ladies were
nominated at the end of the 2015 school
year and were eager to participate. Sarah was
nominated and participated last year, and
although the Civic Band usually only takes one
nominee from each school, they were glad to
accept both young ladies this year!
The Civic Band has been performing Friday
evenings for the community downtown on the
court square for many years. The Spot donates
a pie to be raffled off at each of the concerts
which are themed and present a variety of
music everyone can enjoy. Thank you to all of
those who supported Kami and Sarah and the
Sidney Civic Band this season! There are still
a few concerts left for the year if you missed
them! The Civic Band Schedule is below:

1. Student owns iPad privately through an outside vendor
Totally owned by student
Have 24/7 access
Put own apps on it
Must Register iPad with Technology Department and during school
must use school filter
Must sign acceptable use and all other required forms – RENEWED

No usage fee
2. Student owned from previous year purchase or student may purchase
an iPad AIR from Fairlawn Schools at the cost of $380.00. Student may
also purchase a cover through the school for a cost to be announced.

The school-owned iPad may not be taken home.
