Beginning with Commerce Pointe Menifee, the city’s first business/light industrial park which broke ground in January, the community will see construction on multiple developments and infrastructure projects this year (see pages 5 and 8). Additional projects include retail centers, Krikorian Premiere Theatres and the long-awaited Interstate 215 / Newport Road Interchange. With more restaurants, retail outlets and businesses coming to Menifee, residents have more choices to shop locally, additional job opportunities are created, and Menifee’s sales tax revenues increase. The income Menifee receives from sales tax revenue is used for important city services such as public safety, animal services, parks maintenance and community services. In fact, Menifee was able to use increased sales tax revenue income to add three additional police officers to its force this fiscal year. In other news, the Community Services Department began work on Menifee’s Parks, Trails, Open Space and Recreation Master Plan (PTOSRMP). Community feedback will play a huge part in the success of this plan that will ultimately serve as a guide to manage the city’s parks and trails in the future (see the story on page 6). Speaking of parks, playgrounds at three parks were resurfaced in January as part of the city’s efforts to revitalize neighborhood parks. New rubberized surfacing provides a safer area for play at Lazy Creek, Nova and E.L. Pete Peterson parks. One of our top priorities at the city is to continue improving our residents’ quality of life. We’re off to a great start this year with multiple projects and future planning, and we look forward to keeping you up-to-date on all city happenings. Kind regards, Robert A. ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT UPDATE Shop Menifee provides all the tools you need to shop locally. Work begins on Menifee’s first business park The Menifee Valley Chamber of Commerce, with support from the city, launched shopinmenifee.com to encourage people to shop locally. The site offers a business directory that highlights Menifee stores, restaurants and businesses and provides their location. There’s also free coupons for deals at participating Menifee businesses. 215 COMMERCE POINTE MENIFEE Keller Rd. Clinton Ke Zeiders Rd. The project is situated in a convenient, centrally located area along Interstate 215, between Scott and Keller Roads. When completed, the large business park will include up to 53 buildings spread over 51 acres. Infrastructure improvements associated with the project include improvements to Zeiders and Bailey Park Roads, along with construction of the new Ciccotti Street. Scott Rd. Haun Rd. Murrieta Rd. Local and regional business and light industrial companies will soon have much needed work space available in a highly desirable location. Construction is under way on Commerce Pointe Menifee, an 827,000-square-foot business/light industrial park located along Interstate 215. N i t h R d. “Shopinmenifee.com is a tool to promote our local businesses and to encourage the Menifee community to shop locally,” said Economic Development Director Jeff Wyman. “When people support local businesses, money is contributed to the city’s sales tax revenues which is a main source of city income used to provide public safety, parks maintenance and community services. Shopping locally also helps to boost local job growth.” Menifee is open for business in 2015! The Commerce Pointe Menifee groundbreaking kicked off what is expected to be an eventful year in Menifee’s development. “There are more than 75 commercial, residential and infrastructure projects in various stages of design,” said Economic Development Director Jeff Wyman. “We expect multiple projects to begin construction, along with the accompanying infrastructure improvements, in 2015. It’s an exciting time in Menifee.” Projects expected to break ground this year include Town Center Marketplace at Haun and Newport Roads, featuring restaurants, PetSmart and Party City, and the Menifee Town Center, site of the future Krikorian Premiere Theatres, located at Newport Road and Town Center Drive. Residents are invited to stay connected via Facebook, Twitter, the city website and Menifee e-news for upcoming economic development activity. This new sign is on site and dirt is moving at the Menifee Town Center. Building Our Future 5 CITY NEWS Parks and trails master plan needs community input What do YOU, community members, envision for Menifee’s parks, trails, open space and recreation amenities? This is one of the main questions City Staff and RJM Design Group will be asking as they begin work on Menifee’s Parks, Trails, Open Space and Recreation Master Plan (PTOSRMP). The year-long master plan project will provide a prioritized, 10-year guide for the future outlining recommendations for recreational amenities and open space. There are a number of ways for the community to give input including stakeholder interviews, a community-wide telephone survey, three community workshops and an online survey. Residents also may provide feedback via social media. In addition to community input, the master plan will include background research, inventory of facilities and programs, demand and needs assessment and future recommendations. Opportunities for community involvement in the project will take place from March to May. Information about how to participate will be posted on the city’s Facebook and Twitter sites, website and in the city’s electronic newsletter. During the past six months, companies like AT&T and SoCal Gas worked overnight to move underground cables and equipment to accommodate the interchange project and ensure uninterrupted service. The next phase of work on the interchange project is set to begin in April and the $37 million project is expected to be completed in 18 to 22 months. The project will provide easier freeway access with a new cloverleaf on- and off-ramp design. Newport Road will also be widened to four lanes in each direction on the overpass to improve traffic flow on the city’s main east/west arterial road. Motorists on Newport Road may experience delays near the freeway overpass during interchange construction. Alternative route signage will be posted at strategic intersections giving motorists enough time to avoid construction traffic by taking an alternate route. Newport Road median improvements complete New, water-efficient landscaping in the Newport Road median east of Interstate 215 is the final touch completing the Newport Road Widening project, the city’s first project in the Menifee Moving Capital Improvement Program. The water-wise shrubs, trees and plants lining the median will be watered with a new drip irrigation system. Decorative river rocks and softscape add dimension to the landscape. Although construction on Newport Road was completed last fall, the landscaping phase was delayed because the existing median soil contained concrete from the old roadway. Contractors were forced to remove the median soil, excavate the old roadway underneath, then add new amended soil to the median. “The soil quality was so poor below the surface we decided to remove it and restart with amended soil to ensure the new plants would thrive,” said Public Works Assistant Director Rafael Martinez. “We chose to make changes to do the project correctly, even though it meant a delay in completion. Beautification projects like this are the details that make communities shine.” 8 New traffic signals to be ready for next school year Construction on three traffic signals will begin this summer at impacted intersections in Menifee, all located near schools. The new signals will be installed at the intersections of Aldergate Drive at Menifee Road near Freedom Crest Elementary School; at Bradley and Holland Roads near Paloma High School; and at Garbani and Antelope Roads, just south of Mt. San Jacinto College. “To reduce impacts to school traffic, these signals will be under construction while school is out during summer and will be ready in time for the start of school this fall,” said City Engineer Jonathan Smith. “This is a great example of how collaboration leads to a positive result – the city worked with residents and the school district to develop a project that ultimately provides a safer environment while improving traffic flow.” Information on project updates, lane closures and nighttime work can be found at: www.cityofmenifee.us and check in on: cityofmenifeeus cityofmenifee Construction Hotline: 1-844-440-INFO (4636) SENIOR CENTER HAPPENINGS KAY CENICEROS SENIOR CENTER 29995 Evans Road Menifee, CA 92586 (951) 672-9673 MOVIE DAY!
