When I first saw the word “gigatown” plastered around Queenstown and on
the internet, I misread it as “gingatown” and assumed it was some kind of racist
promotion against our red headed friends of Celtic or Gaelic descent. But once
realising my mistake and after deeper investigation I found it to be an elaborate
marketing campaign by the company charged with installing the high speed
broadband service throughout New Zealand. They are going to award the winning
town the ‘privilege’ of being the first town to have their switch flicked, unlocking the
speed of one gigabyte per second internet.
Maybe I’m wrong again and “gigatown” really is a prize worth having but in my
opinion it looks suspiciously like you win the chance to be charged an unknown
fee to have your internet upgraded. Substantially upgraded to possibly (but not
guaranteed according to the small print) the fastest internet speed in the Southern
Hemisphere. I would hate to be wrong for a third time, but isn’t that what the
government is paying them to do? Give New Zealanders the ability to pay for super
high speed internet if they so choose - whether they win a competition or not?
One gigabyte per second internet should be a national standard not a ‘prize’. And
even then, how long until 1gbps is old hat and 10gbps is normal? Japan is already
offering 2gbps internet.
Regardless of its questionably worthy end prize, the quest to be “gigatown” does
demonstrate the ability of small towns like Queenstown to bond with one another
quicker and more successfully than most. We are not currently “winning” gigatown,
that honour goes to an even smaller tightknit community over the Crown Range
called Wanaka, however the fact we have managed to climb into the top five in a
matter of a few months this year in my mind demonstrates Queenstown’s ability to
come together and promote ourselves successfully towards a common goal. When
what is now called Destination Queenstown came into existence, Queenstowners
started to work together to promote ourselves and build our popularity in the
tourism sector. That willingness to stand beside your competitors in business
promoting each other is what keeps us one step ahead of the pack.
Those pushing for Queenstown to become “gigatown” have that same ‘for the
community good’ ethic, so therefore deserve our support in reaching that goal
of making Queenstown “gigatown”. There is no doubt healthy marketing around
us having the fastest internet in the Southern Hemisphere will enhance the
Queenstown brand. What won’t help however will be if there is another condition
in the small print that says we have to keep calling ourselves gigatown. It just does
not sound right. But in the meantime let’s run with it and support #gigatownqtn

advantage of a QLDC amnesty before the Council starts following up on
unregistered rental agreements.

Crown Range Roadworks
Allow extra time for travel between Queenstown and Wanaka for the
next month as roadworks are underway on the zigzags up to the Crown
Terrace. The road will remain open but expect delays. You may prefer to
travel via Cromwell.
Go Gigatown
Both Queenstown and Wanaka are front runners to become New
Zealand’s “Gigatown”, giving users within the UFB area of the winning
town the fastest internet in the Southern hemisphere. You can support
your town by signing up on line and using your town’s gigatown hashtag
on social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.
The five towns with the most points at the end of September will start a
completely new Gigatown competition with all points reset to zero for the
final contest.
Light No Fires
Even though we’ve had a few wet days, a prohibited fire season is still in
place across the whole Queenstown Lakes District. This means that all
bonfires, camp fires or fireworks are prohibited. Gas and electric BBQs
are permitted, as are cooking fires in approved, permanent structures.
Remember – if you light a fire in breach of the fire ban, you will be liable
for the cost of putting it out, and that can run into thousands of dollars.
Life Jackets Save Lives
There’s plenty of warm weather left and if you’re out in a kayak, dinghy,
inflatable boat or any small craft less than 6m in length, remember that
you and everyone on board must wear a lifejacket at all times. That’s the
simple rule that QLDC has made as part of the Navigation Safety Bylaws
to keep recreational water users safe in our lakes and rivers. If you’re on
a paddleboard, you need to use a leg leash within 200m of shore and
a lifejacket if you’re further out. We recommend novice paddleboarders
wear a lifejacket at all times.
Out at the Gate by 8
Wherever you live, remember to put your rubbish and recycling out for
collection by 8am. We sometimes field complaints from people who miss
the weekly collection because they aim to put their bins or bags out just
before the truck passes their gate. But the collecting time can vary from
week to week so remember: “Out at the gate by 8” is the simple rule.

food safety grading of the restaurants, cafés, hotels and fast food outlets
in your area. QLDC inspectors carry out regular checks of all commercial
food premises and the results of these inspections are now on line. Each

of commercial kitchens were assessed as either Excellent or Good. See

More control Over Firewood Delivery
At this time of the year we are thinking
of staying warm and heating our homes
for our familys for the long winter ahead.
Many of us have wood burners and
depend on wood for this heat. My
whinge is why is it that there is no controls
on firewood companys that claim to have
dry firewood and selling at cubic meters
and they drop off wet wood and short you
by not having the amount of firewood they
say. I got ordered 5 meters of firewood
and clearly got 2.5 meters. When I told
them I have been getting 5 meters for 23
years and have stacked it the same way all
this time and it was short by half, the man
said that he got back from the delivery and
found he had a meter left over. He then
came back with a .5 of a meter making the
deal now 2 meters under the amount that
was bought and paid for. My whinge is
that lets get what we pay for nothing more
nothing less .

Parking problems in Queenstown is an all too
familiar complaint to us all but my whinge isn’t
about the lack of parking in Queenstown it’s
coming back to my vehicle to find that the joker
who parked after me has some how managed
to squeeze his oversized SUV into the tiniest
of spaces!
Now I know that trying to find a park can take
what seems like hours of driving around in
circles so you are going to take to first available
one you see but maybe next time have a little
consideration for the cars around you because
after squeezing through the 10cm gap you have
left me to the drivers door I now have to slowly
back out making sure not too damage your
vehicle!
In my mind you have come from the same
mould of drivers who take up two car parks or
park in disabled carparks! So how about next
time before you decide to squeeze into the
last tiny space available have a little thought for
the cars around you or alternatively buy a mini,
those cars can fit anywhere!

It’s All About Give and Take
I have been in Queenstown more than 6 years
and therefore have few loyalty cards over the
years which I do use from time to time when I go
for a drink here and there. The other day I went
to a bar I have been going in for many years,
now I don’t always have my loyalty card on me
so I don’t always use it but Saturday I happen
to have it so I gave it to the lady and she said
that number is already used and she knows the
guy who has that number. I am a bit surprised
that someone else had my number, how is that
possible? She answered that if I don’t use my
card they delete it. I have used my card a month
ago so how is that possible that I got deleted??
Anyway moving forward, I asked if I can have
a new one then. She came back with a card,
buy 10 drinks and get a loyalty card and said
we don’t give away loyalty card anymore!! Well
that’s a great way to reward someone who has
been coming in that bar since 6 years!! They
won’t see me or my friends anytime soon!

seasons. Great location, people and
classes. Unfortunately the owners got
into a argument and decided to freeze
over the accounts and as a consequence
their employees wouldnt get payed.
This meant that a lot of the classes
got cancelled and there were a lot of
unhappy customers around. I am really
happy to see that the directors sorted
things out and that Queenstown Gym
seems to have come out of this one
stronger than before! A new schedule,
more of my favourite classes and a lot of
happy faces around! Lets all get fit for
