Ultra has developed a unique capability, through supplying and supporting the Weapon Interface Equipment for the UK Royal Navy over a period in excess of 30 years. This support has included the development, manufacture, and in-service support of all underwater launched weapon interfaces. Within the scope of underwater launched weapon, Ultra have developed a family of launch systems that can provide the complete interface between the platform fire control, the discharge gear, and the weapon. All past and current RN tube launched weapons are Supported, including the Spearfish torpedo, Harpoon and block III and Block IV TLAM. Through the use of COTS based products, the capability and flexibility provided within the interface system can be easily upgraded as required to enable a wide selection of current and future weapons and interfaces to be accommodated. In addition to providing the Weapon Interface systems, Ultra have developed an integrated simulation facility, allowing full use of the functionality of the launch and control equipment alongside and at sea. This allows on board training for both Operators and Command Teams, without the associated costs of sea training and dedicated trials ranges. Command & Control Systems Key Capabilities ■ Use of COTS hardware to provide ease of through life support ■ Open Architecture to provide data sharing ■ Adaptable to suit choice of Weapon ■ Expansion capability for other control functions Using a selection of COTS based products, including VMS cardsets, Ultra can provide a range of Weapon Interface Management systems that interface directly with either a conventional Copper/Cadmium or a Fibre Optic weapon control wire. Using COTS enables a cost-effective method of maintaining capability whilst reducing obsolescence costs, as well as the ability to adapt easily to new interfaces associated with developing weapon technology. The current Astute SWIM system provides a tailored interface between the Command system and the discharge gear. Ultra can provide an Open Architecture interface between a weapon and the platform tactical network thus reducing initial and future integration costs. Open Architecture interfacing also offers the opportunity for a greater degree of integrated simulation by using the tactical LAN to carry combat system wide simulated data. Ultra are currently providing customer-specific interface equipment based on the SWIM/SWIM2 equipment, to the mid-life updates programme for the RN Trafalgar and Vanguard class platforms. Simulators The Enhanced Spearfish Simulator is an integrated system that provides the capability to undertake a complete simulated Spearfish attack, including weapon control and feedback post-firing. The modelling includes full firing simulation, using inputs from the host platform Weapon Discharge gear and by modelling the characteristics of the weapon, target and environment. The ESS provides a totally Synthetic input to the Weapon Interface system and thence to the Combat System. TLAM/TTWCS Following the successful introduction of the Tomahawk Block III missile into service with the RN, Ultra have provided a comprehensive Support Service, for the conversion of the S&T class submarines fire control to fire Tomahawk Block III missiles. This included the provision of Project Management, ILS Consultancy, Technical and field support. Subsequent to the adoption of the Block IV variant, Ultra have been integral to the modification and integration of an update to the platform fire control system.
