World Equestrian Games 2014
WEST WEG PRE TOUR SWITZERLAND & PARIS
09 – 16 August 2014
Anne & Rob Battley are excited to offer what is looking like the best World
Equestrian Games ever. They have had the pleasure of sharing 3 other WEG tours
in Europe with many of you. Namely, Stockholm, Den Hagg & Aachen – if you
thought they were fantastic then you are in for an absolute treat this coming WEG!
We are proud to announce that this tour is being arranged by our friends, Carol
McCracken at Globetrotter Corporate Travel in Perth and Sandra Amstein from
Bucher Travel in Lucerne, Switzerland (who organized the above 3 tours
fabulously). Anne & Rob recently visited Sandra at her Lucerne office and together
came up with the most fantastic Pre Tour “of the best of the best” Switzerland has
to offer, based for 5 nights in Lucerne followed by 2 nights in Paris – you are sure to
be totally relaxed by the time we continue on to Caen in Normandy for the games
as we have our own luxury coach for the entire tour, in fact right to the door of the
superbly located hotel in Caen.
We are delighted to offer you the choice of staying for the first week or both weeks
of the WEG program.
We prefer to keep our tour group small and intimate, so have limited this tour to 30
people and we would like to request the pleasure of your company to join our
Exclusive Tour Group. Sandra has managed to obtain a ‘first option’ at the Hotel
Moderne in Caen; it is the prime location for these games in the centre of Caen.
(Please see book Caen, Normandie page 33, number 5 with map reference E7).
However, to secure your hotel accommodation and a place on the Pre tour a nonrefundable deposit of 30% is required by Friday, 17 June 2011.
WEG 2014 is a “long way off” however, times flies and the exchange rate is
fantastic at the moment so it is great to pay the deposit now and the final balance
will be due by 09 June 2014.
Tickets are NOT INCLUDED in this offer: we have requested “A” class tickets in a
block booking and we will advise you when they become available.
Flights are NOT INCLUDED in this offer: Globetrotter will contact you to organize
these from September 2013 when the flights will go on sale.

Since the St. Gotthard Road Tunnel opened in 1980, the Ticino (the Italian speaking
South of Switzerland) is at our doorstep now. From Lucerne travel through the
Seelisberg tunnel, then follow the upper River Reuss with its narrowing mountains
and breathtaking scenery. From the holiday resort of Andermatt, you climb the St.
Gotthard Pass, not only one of the most important Alpine Passes for centuries, but
also one of the most famous European crossroads. This is a country of contrast, the
untamed wilderness of high Alps reaching down to the edge of frame and orchard.
Here is the source of two famous rivers, Rhine and Rhone. Travelling through the
valley of the Northern Ticino, you find that Ticinese people have kept their own
traditions. Here at the foot of the peaks of Monte Bré‚ and Salvatore, at the Lake of
Lugano, you have plenty of time to explore the city of Lugano on your own with its
many attractive shops and outdoor cafes. On the return journey, you experience
another highlight, by driving through the longest and most modern road tunnel in
Europe, built in 10 years and 4 months of difficult work, length 10.40 miles, speed
limit 48m/ph. Its own electric power station secures the air-conditioning and closed
circuit television every 250 yards. Continue on the highway, going through the
Seelisberg tunnel, also opened in 1980, 5.55 miles long and return to Lucerne.

Visit to Cheese Factory with cheese tasting
This excursion takes you to one of the most scenic areas of Switzerland, the country
of Appenzell, from Lucerne to Sihlbrugg and across a pass called “Hirzel”.
Descending from there, the beautiful panorama over Lake Zurich lies ahead. Along
Lake Zurich to Pfaeffikon, then across the 2,7 miles long lake to reach Rapperswil, a
medieval town dominated by its castle. Via the Rickenpass, Wattwil, Waldstatt and
Hundwil, arrive in Stein, a charming farmer’s village. Here you will visit the cheese
factory and watch the production of the famous and tasty Appenzeller cheese. From
here it’s just a short drive to the town of Appenzell, which is also the capital of this
smallest Swiss Canton. The people of Appenzell area are unique characters and
known for their sly sense of humour, their own costumes and folklore. Appenzell lies
2.400 ft. above sea level in a most idyllic setting and its colourful painted houses
are real works of art. You will enjoy strolling trough this charming town on your own
and needless to say the area has typical local dishes you may enjoy tasting. You
may also visit the most interesting Retonio’s Museum displaying mechanical
instruments and dolls from 2 centuries. In the afternoon, the route takes you via
Gais and Teufen to the city of St. Gallen, founded by the Irish monk Gallus in 612.
The monastery is the largest Baroque building complex in Switzerland and its library
is world-famous. Textile industry plays an important role here and the lace from St.
Gallen is renowned and has decorated many Royal bridal gowns over the centuries.

typical cobblestone streets. Within its ramparts the charming town of Beaune
reveals its historical mansions, medieval half-timbered houses, flowered squares
and gardens… Beaune is a place where strolling is a pleasure!
Beaune offers an exceptional heritage and invites you to discover its monuments
and museums. Don’t miss the Collegiale Notre Dame Basilica, the Wine Museum and
last but not least the Hôtel-Dieu (Beaune Hospices), that still bears witness to the
past when the power of the Duke of Burgundy stretched from Flanders to the
Netherlands.
Beneath the cobblestone streets lies a treasure that every visitor has to see! Since

centre of international wine trade in the 18th century. Thus, Beaune has been

Steep yourself in the delightful atmosphere of Giverny, Claude Monte's home until

Caen
Caen is located between two rivers, the Orne and the Odon.
Already an important place in the Middle Ages, it was seized by William the
Conqueror during the XIth century. In spite of severe destruction during WWII
bombings, a number of ancient houses and buildings have remained, some of them
going back to the XIth century. Caen is also famous for its Museum for Peace, built
in 1988, as well for the museum of Normandy and the one on Fine Arts.
