Mid - Hudson
a message from the board chair &
executive director
2014 marked our 50th year
of serving the region and
began with the “50 years of
Mid-Hudson Artists” exhibition
at the Mid-Hudson Heritage
Center. Organized by Arts MidHudson, this exhibit presented
work from artists who have
been members or participated
with the Dutchess County Arts
Council over its 49-year long
history. March 18th was the
official date marking the 50th
anniversary of the founding of
the organization and the kickoff
of “50 Locations/50 Weeks,” a
yearlong celebration of events
across Dutchess, Orange, and
Ulster Counties chaired by our
Board Member, Judith Brush.
In 2014, our 50th Anniversary
year, Arts Mid-Hudson,
sharpened its focus by
increasing community outreach
by surveying the public at each
of the 50 locations where we
were present. Information from
over 600 surveys gathered
at the end of the year will
inform our cultural data plan
for future programming.
Arts Mid-Hudson made a
significant effort to collaborate
and partner with other
organizations across the region
to raise the visibility of the arts
and offer cultural events and
celebrations in unexpected
2
places. During 2014
we were proud to be
part of the team that
launched the first
Dutchess Dragon Boat
Races and Festival
on the Poughkeepsie
waterfront, working
with Dutchess Tourism
and Miles of Hope Breast
Cancer Foundation.
Increasing earned income to
support the region’s arts and
cultural needs was identified
as a key goal in 2013, and with
our move into a new location,
the board and staff realized
the first steps toward this goal
during 2014. Our new location
allows Arts Mid-Hudson to
showcase our region’s artists
in a gallery space that was
immediately utilized when
we launched “Dutchess
Handmade,” a holiday
pop-up shop that offered
local artist’s work and artisan
products for sale. This effort
encouraged the community
to “shop local,” and memberartists received over $9,000
from sales during November
and December 2014.
2014 was the first year that
Arts Mid-Hudson provided
grant awards in Orange County
through the New York State
Council on the Arts regrants
program, in addition to our
decades of service in Dutchess
and Ulster Counties. Arts
Mid-Hudson continues to
work with Dutchess and Ulster
Counties to provide services
to ensure that arts and culture
are accessible to all in their
community. During December,
Arts Mid-Hudson’s Folk Arts
Program was showcased in
a New York Times article,
bringing attention to one of our
key offerings that encourage
appreciation and participation
with cultural traditions
practiced by residents of our
region.
As the year ended, we reflect
on our mission to provide
vision and leadership to
support thriving and diverse
arts in the Mid-Hudson Valley,
and look ahead to serving our
region long into the future.

50th anniversary
As we began 2014 with a new
name, Arts Mid-Hudson, we
embarked on our second
half-century of supporting the
arts in Dutchess, Orange and
Ulster Counties. Thanks to Arts
Mid-Hudson’s five decades of
unparalleled leadership and
support, individual artists, arts
organizations, educators and
businesses have done more
than accomplish worthy artistic
aims: they have also helped
secure valuable programs
while contributing to our area’s
economic security.
In light of Arts Mid-Hudson
taking on an expanded area for
New York Council for the Arts
grants in Orange County, and
our commitment to expand

our work with Ulster County
artists, residents, and business,
Arts Mid-Hudson planned
a 50 Locations/50 Weeks
celebration. This series of events
encompassed artists’ networking
gatherings, community arts
events and performances
beginning spring 2014 and will
continue through the spring
of 2015 throughout Dutchess,
Ulster, and Orange Counties. A
Cultural Assessment survey was
gathered from the public at each
location, and as the year came
to an end the 50th Anniversary
Team had received over 600
surveys that will inform planning
for arts programs in the region.
We launched the 50th
Anniversary year on March

Women and the Junior League of Poughkeepsie.
day since our incorporation
as the Dutchess County Arts
Council. During this year-long
celebration, we highlighted
our milestones from 1964 to
today and made note of key
artists and organizations. We
also celebrated our funders
and supporters and featured
successful projects and artists
through the years whose artistic
goals were met with funding from
our grants.
In this annual report, we are
pleased to share a timeline of
our work, which runs along the
bottom of each page. This work
brought people from within our
diverse community together to
provide arts and culture across
the region.

folk arts programs
The Folk Arts Program is actively
involved with cultural, ethnic,
and religious communities
throughout the Mid-Hudson
Region. Since 1998, the agency
has hosted a part-time staff
folklorist. The staff folklorist’s
tasks includes community
outreach and liaison work;
providing technical assistance;
documenting cultural practices
of the area’s occupational, ethnic,
religious, cultural, and
regional/place-specific
communities; maintaining the
archive of documentation
materials; and organizing
and producing educational
cultural programs and events.
Public programs presented in
collaboration with community
organizations aim to expand
awareness our region’s rich
cultural heritage while also
identify topics for future
research and presentation. The
goals of the Folk Arts Program
are to document the traditional
practices in the community,
provide technical assistance
to grassroots and established
community organizations, and
to foster an awareness of and
appreciation for cultural diversity.
The Arts Mid-Hudson Folk Arts
Program is funded primarily by
New York State Council on the
Arts (NYSCA) and the County of
Dutchess, with additional support
in 2014 from Stewart’s Shops.

Kakizome, the ritualized first
calligraphy writing of the New
Year. Traditionally people would
use calligraphy to write poems
that expressed their hopes
and aspirations for the coming
year. The kakizome tradition
continues, but these days,
practitioners write favorable kanji
(Japanese characters) rather than
poems. Kakizome is a reflective
practice organized around the
understanding that practicing
one kanji over and over helps
focus on the hoped-for theme,
which will guide you into the
New Year. During the program,
volunteers from the local
Japanese community provide
guidance on all aspects of the
meditative calligraphy tradition,
from selecting the appropriate
kanji to holding the special brush.
Marlboro Free Library, featured
traditional Mexican dance
and arts. During the program,
youth and adults learned
about Mexican culture from
members of the area Mexican
community through handson activities including making
cascarones (confetti-filled egg
shells, traditionally used at
Easter and during community
celebrations) and piñatas. The
program features performances
of traditional folk dances from
the Mexican states of Nuevo
Leon, Oaxaca, and Sinaloa by
dance troupe Grupo Folclórico
de Poughkeepsie. In addition,
interested children participated
in an experiential lessondemonstration led by Grupo
Folclórico dancers.

2014 was the sixth year for the
local staging of this traditional
Oaxacan community festival.
The Poughkeepsie festival,
organized by members of
Poughkeepsie’s Oaxacan
community, with assistance
from the Folk Arts Program and
other area community partners,
is a vibrant display of folkloric
dance, traditional Mexican and
American food, and free activities
for children. La Guelaguetza
is a celebration of Oaxacan
regional culture and community
building. Among the highlights
were traditional folk dances from
the different regions of Oaxaca
performed by dancers adorned
in stunningly beautiful costumes
sent from Oaxaca. Mark your

examples of some of the area’s vibrant
traditional culture. In December, The

commitment to raising visibility of the
region’s artistic and cultural diversity.
