2014
Dear Friends,
“No one is useless in this world who lightens the burdens of another.”
― Charles Dickens
As we look back at 2014, we hope that the burdens of our neighbors were lightened by our
work. We think of the veterans finally getting housed and in need of furniture that are now
safely in their homes. We think of the babies, children, elderly and disabled who are resting
comfortably in safe beds. We think of all the families that we helped to keep their utilities
on in that brutal winter and all the workers who can make it to work, because we helped
repair their cars. It is a wonderful thing to come in every day and make a difference in
someone’s life.
2014 turned out to be a phenomenal year for Friends In Deed. We started the year with a
$12,000 budget deficit. But a special appeal to our loyal supporters closed that gap. Then
all of you came through again in May when the Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation
held a special online Match Day celebrating their 50th anniversary. Friends In Deed
continues to have the most generous and loyal supporters - people like all of you with
hearts full of compassion for your neighbors. Your faithfulness never fails to amaze us.
As we embarked this year into our fourth decade of service, we look forward with
optimism and hope that Friends In Deed will have another 30 years of serving the neediest
of our Washtenaw County residents.
With gratitude for your support,
Sarah Thornburg

FID had an embarrassment of riches in
2014 — thanks to our generous
supporters!
We received $45,070 on Match Day
(5/6/14) because of over $30,000 in
pledged donations on that day.
The Thornburg girls donated a
crib on Giving Tuesday.
Successful Annual Events
We received double the number of
donated cars in 2014.
Bed and crib donations were way up in
2014. This was in part due to our new
Giving Tuesday campaign in which Van
Winkle Mattress company donated a
bed for every five donated on Giving
Tuesday.
Both the Annual Dinner and Golf Outing were big
successes in 2014.
We were able to help Nicole with
a car so she could get to work
and provide for her family.

Operating Expenses
While the generosity of our supporters seems to know no bounds, we experienced
something of a hiccup in 2013: a deficit in funds for operating expenses. While
support was up for all of our programs, those donations earmarked to cover the cost
of keeping the lights on, the printers humming and the staff paid were down — a
trend being experienced by the nonprofit community in general.
In 2014, Friends In Deed’s supporters, new and old, addressed the problem and
found a solution. For instance, when a special appeal was made to our long-time
donors for assistance, they came through to the tune of $12,000. We also received
$15,000 in grant monies specifically earmarked for operating expenses from the
Harry A. & Margaret D. Towsley Foundation, a new supporter.
The support of these people, congregations and organizations effectively provided
FID with a safety net; so we, in turn, could act as a safety net to the low-income
families in our community.
