Kennedy Thank you so much for YOUR contribution to making life better for our most vulnerable neighbors. We ask that you celebrate with us as we reflect on what a difference Friends In Deed made in the lives of so many Washtenaw County residents in 2015. Your generosity helped us provide more than 2000 pieces of furniture, beds to more than 100 families and financial assistance to 285 families. You are making a difference every day when you support Friends In Deed with your time, your passion, your prayers and your gifts. Thank you so very much! With gratitude for your support, Car Donations Beds & Cribs Furniture Afua received a car from Friends In Deed so she could get to work. Friends In Deed was able to help Heriberto with furniture when he obtained custody of his son. New Supporters 2015 Highlights Innovation and Change 2015 was a year of innovation and change for Friends In Deed as we considered new ways to help families in the community. Not only did we research new programs, we took steps toward obtaining additional funding for utility assistance — a growing need in our community after the Department of Human Services cut back its months of service. As a result, we received grants from the Basic Needs Fund and Women’s Leadership Initiative of The United Way of Washtenaw County. Women from Plante Moran and various other organizations got together to make blankets leading into the holiday season. Generous Volunteers Thanks to Giving Tuesday and our annual Bed & Crib Drive, Pilar and her two children received a crib and bed. We also made some changes to our annual events to keep them fresh and increase their success. For instance, we moved our Annual Dinner to Washtenaw Community College and expanded the dinner’s silent auction to include a live auction and Fund the Mission opportunity. We also changed the venue of our annual Golf Outing to The Polo Fields — Washtenaw. Dan and Tom (not shown) pick up and deliver furniture for us every other Thursday, and they make friends wherever they go. When Dana, Donna and Elizabeth donated furniture, they were so impressed by the men that they stopped by the office with doughnuts. Good Friends Mary O’Brien donated a year to Friends In Deed. Not only did she help out with client profiles and on the furniture line, she joined the committee to research Circles. Operating Expenses We have been focused on increasing funding for operating expenses this year by working hard to improve the success of our annual events and by applying for new grants. For instance, we worked to improve the success of our Annual Fundraising Dinner and our Annual Golf Outing by changing to new venues. Proceeds from the Annual Dinner alone covered about 15% of our operating expenses in 2015 — keeping our doors open for almost two months. We also applied for some new grants earmarked for operating expenses. For instance, we obtained a grant in 2015 from the Harry A. & Margaret D. Towsley Foundation that will provide $15,000 in grant monies in each of the next three years. The support of congregations, organizations and individuals and families effectively provided FID with a safety net; so we, in turn, could act as a safety net to the low-income families in our community.
