On March 27th, TEDx comes to above the Arctic Circle, bringing an inspiring day full
of energy and ideas worth spreading
TEDxKiruna will be held at the Swedish Institute of Space Physics, Kiruna in Swedish
Lapland, on Tuesday March 27th from 9 am until 5 pm. The independently organized event,
licensed by TED, is open to the public but requires application and registration at
www.tedxkiruna.com.
TEDxKiruna is a cross-disciplinary event for people and minds to meet, listen to fascinating
speakers inspiring new thoughts and stimulating discussions on the TEDxKiruna theme:
future living.
Speakers at TEDxKiruna include motivational people from different disciplines who will share
their extraordinary backgrounds and view on the future, as we know it:
•
Dick Rutan - a pilot, adventurer and entrepreneur. Dick made history flying around
the world, non-stop and non-refueled flight, setting worldʼs records that remain
unchallenged today.
•
Pat Hynes – serves as the Director of the New Mexico Space Grant Consortium. In
2009 Pat founded the Student Launch Program with the mission to provide annual
access to space for research experiments.
•
Renata Chlumska – an adventurer and future astronaut. In 1999 she became the
first Swedish and Czech woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest and in 2006,
the first person to circumnavigate the US by her own strength; kayaking and bicycling.
•
Stuart Witt – is a business leader and change agent showing how a community and
business can be transformed by giving people permission. Stuart is the CEO of
Mojave airport, the first inland spaceport in 2004, now a silicon-valley for technologies
and a transformed community.
•
Michael Najjar – is an artist and photographer who create visions and utopias of
future social structures emerging from the impact of new technologies. His current
series is entitled “outer space“, a dedication to the latest developments in space
technologies.
•
Johan Lans – is a chef with a passion for using seasonal local ingredients to explore
and create new innovative food concepts. Capitalizing on the space phenomena of
the aurora borealis, Johan has created a northern lights menu - will it tickle your
fancy?
•
Sara Json Lindmark – how can we attract and leverage on the capabilities of young
people within creative industries. Regionally, our biggest export are young talented
students, space provides a unique opportunity and attraction for young as it invites to
visionary work and innovation.
•
Tone Bekkestad – a meteorologist and lecturer who wrote her first paper on climate
change already in 1992. She now lectures and teaches us how we can use today and
tomorrowʼs technology to help us solve the climate crises.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of "ideas worth spreading," TED has created TEDx. TEDx is a program of local,
self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is
called TEDxKiruna, where x = independently organized TED event. At TEDxKiruna,
TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a
small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but
individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.
About TED
TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day
conference in California 26 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas
with multiple initiatives. At TED, the world's leading thinkers and doers are asked to give the
talk of their lives in 18 minutes. Talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED
speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson,
Benoit Mandelbrot, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and former UK
Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Two major TED events are held each year: The TED
Conference takes place every spring in Long Beach, California (along with a parallel
conference, TEDActive, in Palm Springs), and TEDGlobal is held each summer in Edinburgh,
Scotland.
TEDʼs media initiatives include TED.com, where new TEDTalks are posted daily; the new
TED Conversations, enabling broad conversations among TED fans; and the Open
Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as the ability
for any TEDTalk to be translated by volunteers worldwide. TED has established the annual
TED Prize, where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world are given the
opportunity to put their wishes into action; TEDx, which offers individuals or groups a way to
host local, self-organized events around the world; and the TED Fellows program, helping
world-changing innovators from around the globe to become part of the TED community and,
with its help, amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities. For information
