4/8-4/10/16, Bill Cramer, Painting from the Rim
of the Grand Canyon. Nothing really compares to
painting at the edge of the Grand Canyon. This
three-day intensive offers: master instruction, the
support of the Grand Canyon Association’s Grand
Canyon Field Institute (GCFI) and coordination
through the Sedona Arts Center. We will car
pool to various locations on the south rim over
the course of the workshop, coordinating our
locations to create optimal lighting for the
painting experience.
4/15-4/17/16, Elizabeth St. Hiliare, Paper
Paintings. Paper Paintings is an intense workshop
in which students are taught a unique figurative
collage technique. Students will learn to make a
beautiful palette of colors with various papers and
create an under-painting and collage with paper
for a final finish. Emphasis will be on developing
form using light and shadow, just like in traditional
painting techniques. No prior collage experience
is necessary.
4/21-4/24/16, Kathryn Stats, Plein Air Painting
in the Studio. Kathryn Stats is known for her
vibrant color, dramatic compositions and subtle
brushwork. In this studio workshop students will
have the opportunity to choose whether they
wish to work on landscape composition from
photo-reference or with a still-life/floral situation
or both!
4/21-4/23/16, Shelby Keefe, Bold Brush Plein

painters is to successfully narrow down infinite
amounts of detail and express the essence of a
scene. Students will learn and apply strategies
for simplification, value accuracy, compositional
uniqueness and much more. Shelby will share her
method of applying complimentary colors as an
underpainting to the white canvas, and jumping in
with both feet to grab the light before it changes.
5/2-5/5/16, David Santillanes, Mountain Springs
Cabins North Carolina. Beautiful Mountain Springs
Cabins will be our base camp for the workshop
allowing for wonderful vistas and intimate scenes
to work with as motifs right outside our doors.
Optional day-trips to beautiful waterfalls, Blue
Ridge and Smoky Mountain panoramas and the
vast Biltmore estate are also possible.
5/9-5/12/16, Jan Sitts, Texture-Color-Feeling. Jan’s
experience and enthusiasm create an atmosphere
of fun and spontaneity inspiring new directions
and discovery through innovative combinations
of design and materials. By combining aggressive
textures and unusual mediums with various
“raw” materials in the abstract painting we get
surprising results. The layering method yields
a magnetism that is particular to mixed media.
Many techniques, materials, compositions and
above all emotion, play off each other in creating
the work.
5/13-5/15/16, Julie Gilbert Pollard, Wet and Wild.
Learn how to make water look wet, reflective
and splashy! With intimate woodsy creeks as
your model, study water in motion and glassy
reflection. Painting water that looks wet requires
some basic knowledge of the dynamics of how
water moves and how objects are reflected in its
mirror surface. Techniques will be demonstrated
to address the various puzzles with which the
artist is faced when painting this stunning,
fascinating - and yes, confusing - subject!
5/13-5/15/16, Kurt Wenner, Perspective and
Illusion. Illusion is the magic of art, while
perspective is the organization of form and space
from one unique point of view. In this 3 day
workshop you will learn how to combine these
powerful techniques to create stunning results.

2/27-2/28/16, Egi Antonaccio, Abstract or Classic
Painting from Photography. All Skill Levels. Using
acrylics and various techniques, Italian artist, Egi
Antonaccio, teaches all levels how to create a
realistic or abstract rendering from photographs
and pictures. Learn to divide the light using
strokes of color with palette knives and brushes
with Egi, whose loose strokes create wonderful
detail. Participants will experience color mixing as
they work from photographs to loosen their style
and develop a new technique to enhance their
skills. Individual attention in any subject matter
will be offered in this workshop to bring your best
creativity to canvas. His approach to realism or
abstraction brings a canvas to life with reflections
of light and offers students an incredible learning
experience. Painting with a palette knife and
painting quickly is more suitable for acrylics. The
experienced artist may use oils but don’t expect
to complete a painting as you would with acrylic.
Egi will open the first day with a demo.

Intermediate to Advanced. Students will paint
from a historic photograph one day, model for
two days, and outdoors for two days. Charles
will demonstrate each morning and the students
will paint each afternoon, with help from
Charles as needed. The goal of the workshop,
whether working from the model, a photo, or
the landscape, is to learn to simplify and avoid
overworking, along with developing edge control
and learning to paint with fresh color.

designing and composing a landscape painting,
by painting many small studies, “starts” in value
and color. The initial decision of what needs to
be in a painting and what doesn’t need to be
in the painting can strengthen your work right
from the start! Kami will be teaching you how
to best structure the landscape by learning how
to simplify the important shapes to create the
strongest carrying power in the piece. Day three
will be focusing on properties of COLOR - hue,

Landscape: How to Reach Your Next Level in Plein
Air and Studio Painting. Intermediate / Advanced.
This workshop is designed to help artists develop
their sense of artistic identity and elevate
the level of their work by honing their skills of
observation and studying the constructs of visual
communication as it relates to the creation of
paintings. The curriculum will be based on the
components and elements that are required in
creating a work of art, such as, concept, design/
composition, value structure, drawing, color
and brush technique. We will be working on
location and in the studio with the purpose of
exploring the development of plein air paintings
into studio paintings. There will be a minimum of
one fully narrated demo a day, mini demos and
instructional exercises, and ample one on one
instruction. There will not be group critiques, but
the work of the class will be discussed in informal
settings. The demos will be in oil with possible
additional demos in watercolor. All media are
welcome, including acrylics and pastels.
