Workshop "Fall" in Love with Plein Air Painting: A Workshop for Every Artist by John Lasater IV September 24 -‐ 26, 2014 -‐ 10AM-‐5PM Fort Smith Regional Art Museum 1601 Rogers Avenue Fort Smith, AR 72901 $250 RAM Members/$300 non-‐members Description If your goal is to create compelling, playful, beautiful artwork outdoors and enjoy the process, this workshop will give you simple steps that make it possible to work quickly and capture your emotional response to nature and light. John’s desire as an instructor is to give you a measure of confidence that will make you free to become who you were meant to be as an artist. He teaches the basics of shapes, colors, values and composition because these are the tools to achieving beauty and simplicity. Just as important, he teaches you to follow your heart when deciding what to paint. Objectives • Gain experience with one of the toughest subjects – landscape en plein air • Choosing where to paint – things to think about before settling on a spot to paint • Utilizing a process; how to approach a plein air painting and follow through • Familiarization with tools, oil paint, and application • When to call it quits/finishing your piece Supplies & Materials • Brushes: Flat hog bristle in a variety of sizes • Palette Knife • Outdoor Easel • Palette: Bigger the better! A 12x16 Richeson Easel Pal is a great size. [In every workshop I teach there are students using restrictively small palettes and tiny piles of paint, and by the end of the workshop they repent of it.] • Canvases: If you’re comfortable with larger canvases, then great, but normally I would recommend 12x16, 11x14, 9x12, or 8x10 for a class like this. Whatever surface you prefer is fine. John uses gesso on Masonite panels • Oil Paints: John uses a simple palette of Rembrandt Brand: Titanium White, Permanent Yellow Medium (or Cadmium Yellow Medium), Yellow Ochre, Permanent Red Medium (or Cadmium Red Medium), Burnt Sienna (or Transparent Oxide Red), Alizarin Crimson (or Permanent Madder Deep), Ultramarine Blue, Viridian • Mineral Spirits • Paper Towels [These supplies are not required, especially if you have preferences of your own, but if you want to get the most out of any workshop, it’s a good idea to have a similar setup as the instructor.] Cancellation Policy • A full refund (less a $50 processing fee) will be made if written notice of cancellation is received one month in advance; a 50% refund will be made if written cancellation is received 72 hours in advance. • Sorry, but no refunds for no shows. • If you cannot attend the workshop you may send a substitute participant in your place with advance notification to RAM’s office at 479.784.2787. Travel and Lodging Participants at the workshop are responsible for their own travel and lodging arrangements. Parking Free parking Breaks Lunch will be 1-‐2PM. Breaks when needed. Water and coffee will be provided throughout the course of the workshop. Directions to the workshop location: From I-‐540: Head west and stay on Rogers Avenue for 3.1 miles. The museum will be on your right. About John P. Lasater IV John P. Lasater IV developed a love for art working as a designer and illustrator for a division of Hallmark Cards. Fine art was a natural transition after years of study and practice. John now paints full time, both from his studio in Siloam Springs, Arkansas, and on the road painting “en plein air.” He also teaches oil painting workshops regionally. Part of John’s mission is to promote the arts in areas currently indifferent to it. He is accomplishing this through his organization Heart of America Artists’ Association which is co-‐led by artist and friend, Todd A. Williams. John also started a tour called “24 Paintings in 24 Hours” in which he partners with galleries in these art-‐starved areas by showcasing his ability to do 24 plein air paintings in 24 straight hours. John’s honors include national plein air painting awards, artist-‐in-‐residency’s and mentions in art magazines including Art of the West, Southwest Art, and Plein Air Magazine. John has studied under nationally known artists C.W. Mundy, Carolyn Anderson, John Budicin, and Todd A. Williams. “Faith in God, respect for humanity, and enjoyment of life should be the theme of my very best paintings. I want my work to be a celebration.”—John Please contact us with any questions.
