Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan
Ruler of Abu Dhabi from 1966 to 2004 and First President of the United Arab
Emirates from 1971 to 2004, is widely recognised as the ‘Father of the Nation’.
He was born in Abu Dhabi around 1918, the youngest of the four sons of Sheikh
Sultan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler of Abu Dhabi from 1922 to 1926.
After the death of his father, Sheikh Zayed was raised in Al Ain and it was
here that he received the education that would shape his life and character.
Schooled in traditional values, he had a deep love and respect for the
environment and was initiated into falconry, which became a lifelong passion.
In August 1966, Sheikh Zayed succeeded his brother in becoming
Ruler of Abu Dhabi. His successful years in Al Ain were to be a model for his
transformation of the lives of his people. Oil revenues were channelled into
a massive construction programme for schools, housing, hospitals and roads.

When Britain announced that it would
leave the region, Sheikh Zayed took
the lead along with Sheikh Rashid bin
Saeed Al Maktoum of Dubai in calling
for a federation of the Emirates. These
were difficult times but, through his skilful
approach of building consensus through
consultation, Sheikh Zayed convinced his
neighbours that their future strength lay
in unity.
On 2 December 1971 the flag of the newly
formed United Arab Emirates was raised.
Sheikh Zayed was elected by his fellow
rulers as the first President of the UAE,
a post to which he was successively
re-elected.

One of the world’s longest-serving monarchs,

Born in 1918 in Ras Al Khaimah and educated locally,
Sheikh Saqr became the sixth Al Qasimi Ruler of
Ras Al Khaimah, who led his people from the era of
pearl fishing into the prosperity of the 21st century.
As oil exports from Abu Dhabi grew in the mid-1960s
a programme of assistance to the poorer Trucial states
was established, and Sheikh Saqr played a significant
role in directing the flow of aid to the northern emirates.
As Crown Prince and later as the Ruler
of Ras Al Khaimah, Sheikh Saud has focused
on improving the sectors in which the Emirate
has a comparative advantage, including tourism,
real estate, and manufacturing.
The Late Sheikh Saqr
bin Mohammad Al Qasimi
He reformed and improved the emirate’s economy, infrastructure,
and public sector as well as its education and health care systems. Under
his leadership, Ras Al Khaimah has introduced a number of Industrial highlights
that have positioned the emirate as an international and industrial leader.
He was also intimately involved in the talks leading to the formation
of the UAE and later Ras Al Khaimah joined as the seventh Emirate

Ras Al Khaimah Mountains
Geography
Due to its geographical location at the northern tip of the United Arab Emirates,
Ras Al Khaimah is literally translated as ‘top of the tent’ and was originally
known as ‘Julfar’. As a rich archaeological destination, Ras Al Khaimah features
a wealth of landscapes from rugged mountain peaks to coastal areas and desert.
To the far north, the emirate borders with the Sultanate of Oman, where the
sheer rocky Hajar Mountain slopes appear to rise out of the sea.
Currency
The monetary unit is the ‘dirham’ (AED) which is divided into 100 fils.
1US$ = AED 3.67
Climate
The climate is sub-tropical, semi-arid with warm temperatures, infrequent rain
fall and blue skies most of the year. Between November and April the average
day-time temperature reaches 28 degrees centigrade whereas in the summer
months between June and August temperatures rise above 35 degrees
centigrade with high humidity.

or revealing. At the pool or on the beach, trunks, swimsuits and bikinis are quite
acceptable. Away from the beach or pool area, however, a shirt and shorts
are the minimum expectation. With the bright sunlight, high-quality sunglasses
are advised as well as a hat or other form of protection for the head.
Islam is the official religion of the United
Arab Emirates and there are a large
number of mosques throughout
the UAE. However, other religions
are respected with many churches
representing various religious
denominations.
Photography
Normal tourist photography is
acceptable, but it is considered
offensive to photograph Muslim
women. It is also courteous to ask
permission before photographing
men. In general, photographs of
government buildings or military
institutions should not be taken.
Clothing
Lightweight summer clothing is suitable
for most of the year, but sweaters
or jackets may be needed during the winter month, especially in the evenings.
Compared to other locations in the Middle East, Ras Al Khaimah has a
relaxed dress code. However, care should be taken as to not offend the local
population by wearing clothing which may be considered inappropriate

Dhayah Fort
Jazirat Al Hamra
Built as a strategic military castle in the 16th century on a mountain overlooking
the Gulf, Dayah Fort witnessed a battle between the local people and the British
troops. Here, its towers were set on fire and later destroyed in 1819.
Al Jazirat Al Hamra is one of the oldest historical sites in the UAE, with forts,
deserted schools and mosques, narrow streets and old buildings that were
inhabited since the 16th century and abandoned nearly 40 years ago.
The villagers who lived there, were mainly involved in fishing and pearl trading.
The Fort was restored in the 1990’s and its strategic location provides
outstanding views of Ras Al Khaimah.
