report to the community 2007.08 Southwest School of Art & Craft Art for Everyone Joyce Bradfield “I’ve found that regular use of a creative outlet helps to bring balance and perspective to the intensity associated with building and running a business. I’m in that Ceramics studio as often as I can be, and it keeps me (literally) centered on my busy wheel of life.“ Antonio Rodriguez “Those Saturday mornings at the art school when I was a little kid, where I discovered art and met some great teachers, helped to determine my life, so that now I’m majoring in art. These days, every day is a great, satisfying time of my life.” Letter to our constituencies Dear friends, This annual report for fiscal year 2008 is accompanied by our admiration and appreciation for your valued participation and philanthropy. We are proud to report that fiscal 2008 ended with a balanced budget and record attendance in all programs. Also among the year’s notable achievements is the establishment of an endowment — with $1.6 million already raised — for the Saturday Morning Discovery program begun in 1969 to provide arts experiences for families. While we look back with gratitude at a year filled with abundance, our attention at present has turned to the global economic turmoil and its affects. Though we are fortunate to have diversified revenue streams, we can predict a general reduction in income and have therefore initiated a plan to intelligently reduce expenditures. We are doing this, however, guided by the following principles: Uphold our passionate commitment to the mission. • Protect dedicated staff who are central to realizing the mission. • Maintain free programs and services for low-income families. • Address the changed economic landscape through strategic planning. • Intensify the prudent oversight of financial investments. • Our future success will depend upon you, as it always has. GENIUS LOCI:VILLA PAULA OWEN AND JANET FLOHR Stellar Exhibitions Kia Ora! The Southwest School of Art & Craft was the axis around which artists from New Zealand revolved during the cultural exchange Te Tataitanga/Bind Together. Eighteen artists, a Kiwi chef, a Maori tattoo artist and a Maori dance ensemble brought New Zealand energy to San Antonio. Equivocal Topographies: Solo Exhibitions by Constance Lowe and Beverly Penn provoked dialog about the natural and the artificial, the conceptual and the sensual. PAUL THOMPSON. THE LANGUAGE SERIES Multiplicity: Contemporary Ceramic Sculpture included eight nationally known ceramic artists whose installations explored duplication and replication. DETAIL. NIGEL BORELL. Over, Under, Around, and Through (far right) included artists Linda Hutchins, Tracy Krumm, and Piper Shepard presenting works addressing process, time and space in an exhibition that drew viewers into fabricated environments of surface and patterns. Passion for History, Pledge to Remember BERNARD L. LIFSHUTZ MARGARET PACE WILLSON A bench commissioned by James G. Lifshutz and created by artist Twyla Arthur, celebrates the life of former board SSAC Chairman Bernard L. Lifshutz near the school’s River Walk entrance. In 2008, a sculptural tribute to Margaret Pace Willson, one of the school’s founders, by Texas artist Jesús Moroles, was installed at the entrance to the historic site. ART 2007.08 Awards During the year, our work delivering a wide range of art experiences was applauded by awards such as: • Women in the Arts, which placed the Southwest School “at the heart of the San Antonio visual arts community” • Downtown Alliance’s “Best Art Event” for last year’s Fernando Botero Exhibition • Community Partner-ofthe-Year Award from the Northside Independent School District, for our Mobile Arts Program • Popular votes for hosting San Antonio’s “KidFriendliest” Fiesta event Eyes on the Future For 40 years, Saturday Morning Discovery • • • • has touched more than 25,000 local families; has been free; has welcomed all youth, many from low income families; has funneled young San Antonians into creative careers — or into living more creative lives. 2009 is the 40th anniversary of San Antonio’s groundbreaking visual arts program for children and families – Saturday Morning Discovery. To make sure that this beloved program – which has enriched the lives of more than 25,000 families – can continue through the years to come, we are working to endow it. Our goal of $3million will keep SMD going in perpetuity – and will enable it to always remain free to children and families every Saturday morning. Reconstruction of Convent Wall and Entrance to Frost Garden While the wall around the old Ursuline convent is being rebuilt, it’s just the beginning of changes coming to the Southwest School of Art & Craft. Our Facilities Master Plan will be announced in the months to come, and will prepare for the future of the school. One thing it will not change is our commitment to delivering high-quality arts experiences for all. fy 2007.08 Mission The Southwest School of Art & Craft teaches, preserves, and advances the visual arts. We expand the creative potential of our community and connect cultures of the world through participatory learning experiences. An additional purpose is to preserve and present the former Ursuline Convent and Academy as a place of historic significance.
