Crumbling is the polite term, sagging might be more descriptive – the
wall along Augusta Street leaned precipitously before a 9-month effort to
rebuild its western face. Care was taken to meticulously reproduce the iron
fence, complete with the hiring of craftsmen who reproduced the finials using molds
from the originals. This historic renovation was made possible by a generous grant
from the Brown Foundation.

In our last fiscal year, we mounted 21 separate exhibitions, featuring artists
not only from San Antonio and Texas, but also from Seattle, Brooklyn,
Florida, Kentucky, New York, Guatemala and elsewhere. Our exhibitions are always
free to the public, underwritten because they are tangible opportunities for our students
to see thought-provoking contemporary works in the media we teach.

ARCHITECTURE FOR KIDS
Last year, our Mobile Arts teachers led art
classes in 57 different schools and community
sites, to an attendance of more than 50,000
children. A recent innovation has been our partnership with
San Antonio’s Architecture Foundation and the local chapter
of the American Institute of Architects, which sent teams of
teachers into 3rd and 5th grade classrooms to introduce the
fundamentals of design, construction and space planning.

CELEBRATING 40 YEARS
When our much-loved, and still free, Saturday Morning
Discovery program turned 40, we wanted to share this
milestone. So we bought loads of art supplies, rented a
giant tent, and readied food for 600 families. We saluted long-time
teachers, and raised a toast to donors on
behalf of the nearly 25,000 children who
received their earliest exposure to the
visual arts here.

arrives for the 40th birthday party.
Some of the most recognizable features of the historic Ursuline site are the 362 French-blue
wooden shutters at the windows of the limestone buildings, which recently needed restoration
work. Each shutter – which has 80 moving parts – was taken apart, painted, then reassembled, over the
course of 5 months. A passion for doing things right, for excellence, runs deep in our institutional bones.
