As
with all things, everythii a llfust come Lo an end,
and as such, this is the last letter from our desk in
Sparta, N.J. Our two years as your Presidents of the NNJSDA
are now over and it has been a very happy and enlightening
experience.
We want to thank all those who have, in some way, made our years on
the Executive Board a memorable one. First, to our Executive Committee words cannot express our appreciation for the time, effort, and devotion
that they have expended in making the smooth running of the NNJSDA. To
the delegates who have acted as our Liaisons between the NNJSDA and their
clubs in carrying hack the all important message on what is transpiring
in Square Dancing. Then to you, the Dancers, whose happy faces and companionship at the various functions have made us proud to be a part of
Square Dancing.
To the many recent Graduates, we recommend that you plan to attend the
Summer Dance Program sponsored by the NNJSDA and geared to your dance
level
Our congratulations to the newly elected NNJSDA officers, and we ask that
you give them the continued support that you have extended to us.
We have made many friends during our term of office, and want to wish
you all "HAPPY SQUARE DANCING".

DELEGATES MEETING - April 16, 1989

All clubs represented except Isle Squares, Kittatinny Rangers & Montville
Squares. Also present 19 club officers and guests from Garden State S/D
Campers and Ken Ritucci (MA) J & M Squares callers that PM who was early.
1 VP- Summer dance schedule is all set; many clubs still have to respond
to request for 2 couples to help with refreshments at dance; All 10 dances
to be MS; Warm Up dance Aug. 30 is Plus; Next special Sept 30. Mac McCall;
would like to have dances in southern area of NNJ- but need ideas for halls.
2 VP - Spring Fling - April 29; will provide dangles for grads; ribbons
for angels; Packets all ready for distribution for NNJ Club graduations.
3 VP - No poster entries received yet. If mailed after May 24, send to
Tirrells 3 Churchill Road, Cresskill,NJ 07626-1698.
GRAND SQUARE- distributed NNJSDA questionnaires to all delegates, also
ad size sheets & rate sheets for next year. Next deadline- July 26!
INSURANCE- Fred Hill will mail all NEW presidents info on how to submit
claims, etc. as soon as the NNJSDA questionnaires on new officers, etc
handed out by GRAND SQUARE are returned.
EDUCATION- Thanked DOT MEYERS for her presentation. Her A, B, C was
act, Be, Calm. The Emergency Call for Medical Aid signal was explained.
STATE DRESS- Rose Ericson has put together a notebook of patterns for the
New Jersey official state dress. Call her for info.
NSDC - Help is needed to get materials for NNJSDA display to Oklahoma City.
If you are driving out and can transport a few items please call Tirrells.
ONE SQUARE IS FAIR- So far 21 clubs have supported it this year. Awards
will be distributed at Warm Up dance August 30.
SDCNJ- Convention next year will be March 24th - 4th Saturday.
CONSTITUTION/BYLAW CHANGES- all were accepted except Article IV, 1.c will
remain as originally written - "promotion of square dancing through publicity." - (One of the purposes of the NNJSDA.) (continued on page 60)

RAIDS - A SPECIAL TWIST
As Raid Chairmen for Valley Squares and Y Squares,
we've run raids twice a month with each club. As a
result, other clubs are now raiding us with almost
the same frequency. It sure makes for a lot more fun when we have
extra squares on the floor. Raiding is fun, even if it does take
some effort and determination. Both clubs have charts listing the
members and we use gold ink to make stars for those who go on a
raid. We award badges which attach to the club badges, using the
club colors. The first award is 5-STAR RAIDER and then 10-STAR
RAIDER. After that the badges go by denominations of 10 and this
goes on indefinitely. As a dancer is promoted, the old badge is
turned in, so there is only a small cost in buying new badges.
At each dance we start our report with a presentation of raid
badges with all the customary square dance hugging and kissing.
Thus, the raid chairmen have a good time giving out awards. We
welcome raiders with lyrics to the tune of the Notte Dame Victory March.
This is taped and our caller & members sing the lyrics. (We will be happy
to furnish this tape to any clubs that request). It was so much fun,
that we recently came up with raid songs for both Valley and Y Squares.
Valley Squares uses "Five Foot Two, Eyes of Blue" and Y Squares has "Yes
Sir, That's My Baby." These tapes were made with the great piano of Don
Biermann of Y Squres and his son, Dave, on ukelele. Lenny Swearer and
Maurie Berlinrut do the vocals. No, this is not marching music. We strut
to the beat, swivel some hips and in time will add some Charleston and a
little simple showtime. Once our raiders learn the words, they will sing
along too. Who says square dancing is serious business!

fulfill our plans for a blood drive on April 16th(boo!)

Can you believe where the time has gone? We have had a good dance season, losing only one dance to snow--I mean no snow, well...they thought it
was going to snow and closed our hall. Many clubs have visited and as we
promised - Y Squares has been out in full force, raiding in return. Our
combined Square Dance Class is almost over and the students are looking
forward to GRADUATION and their first dance as Mainstream dancers.

Apologies for not having an article in the last issue. This has been a
successful season - a lot has happened...here are the details:
October;Halloween Party - Laurel & Hardy, in a "move the\ piano" scene.
The Geisha Girl was trying to play with Crocodile Dundee's crocodile -good time was had by all! November;Big Turkey Shoot, winners were the
follnwing...Ralph/Janet Tunick, George/Fanny Meyer, John/Grace Daigrepont,
Bob/Edna Texel. The rest of us ate chicken. Next time, they can't use a
shot gun. December;Children's Christmas Party (entertainment by Penelope, the clown), Refreshments, song, dancing and a special visit from
Mr. & Mrs. Santa Claus - ah yes, equal rights. Each child took home a
Western Wheeler Cup filled with candy, as a souvenir. New Year's Eve; -Turnaway crowd. Committee of Kerner's, Schreek's & Kolb's did an excellent job. They are now "KSK" catering group. They hire out for wakes,
weddings and bar mitzvahs. February;THE CASTOFFS - all the way from Alaska. One of them took a shine to Edith Kolb. Watch out Hank, he's looking to share his igloo.
Strange people raided Gloverleafs and Cross Trails. There were Baron!
Baroness Von Klotz,Herr/Frau Van deKerner, Duke/Duchess Musante and Lord/
Lady Bachmann. The next raid - we had Bunco Bill, Rioter Rose, Steamboat
Lee, Caboose Elie, Junkyard Gerry and the Dip. What a scene...? Something strange goingon with this club.
A few up-coming events...no space, check the Ad. The following is in
caps for emphasis: MEMBERSHIP MEETING was May 1st. Got to close--can't

Congratulations to the graduates of the 1989 S/D classes. We invite
you to Warren Wheelers, where visitors including singles & teens are
always welcome. Our graduation dance will be over by the time this
issue comes out. But we will still have 3 more dances before we break
for the summer. Our callers have been doing an excellent job of workshopping both plus and any MS moves that anyone is having trouble with.
As this issue goes to press, we've just returned from Trenton for the
3rd annual NJ S & R/D convention. where we participated in the Grand
March and had a wonderful day.

There's no two ways about it. Valley Squares is having a great year.
Every month, we have at least one dance with a special theme and we are
having very good turnouts. In February, we had "Hawaiian Night" with Barry
Serebnick-as our guest caller. Most everyone came in some sort of a Hawaiian get-up. Everyone received a Hawaiian Lei and a shell dangle straight
from Hawaii. Then, we had a "Forget Me Not Dance" - to commerate Valentine's Day. Jeff & Mickey Stevens were the official photographers for the
evening and took everyone's picture...so that everyone who attended had a
souvenir of that evening's dance. In March, we had a "Wearin' 0' The Green"
dance. A delightful night was had by all. The hall was gaily decorated in
green, the dancers came with lots of green and even the refreshments were
green. We were treated that night to a demo by Steve & Wendy Bradt. They
are beautiful dancers and were enthusiastically received by us all. Thanks
so much, Steve and Wendy. Last, but not least, for March - we had a very
successful Student Dance. Dan Koft was the caller for that night and once

We celebrated St. Patrick's day with our annual pot luck dinner. The
food was great. So many good cooks! It was a credit to Old Ireland....
The Tirrells provided delicious platters of fruit "centerpieces", for each
table. The Rellingers contributed a special St. Patty's cake and decorations for the occasion. Larry Davenport substituted admirably for John
Kaltenthaler. The smiles on our faces remained long after we went home
from the dance.
Due to school holidays, Tenakill Twirlers did not meet in April but we
expect to greet new and old friends for our Graduation Ball in May. With
both the Tirrells & Kaltenthalers away in Nevada at LEGACY, we'll have the
McLaughlin's subbing on Rounds and Woerner on Squares. We'll be marching
in the Cresskill Memorial day Parade again. Anyone is "Welcome" to come
join us - wear your S/D UULLii5. but uneLe will be no dancing.

Our March dance was billed as "Pie Night"...but it might as well have
been named "Silly Night" ! Bill and Donna Anderson were our caller & cuer
and no matter what Bill called - each square tried to do it's own thing.
Bill was very liberal with his "yellow rocks" and even called a
"pony express" (that's a "yellow rock" with horsing around!). Donna did
a teach on some simple rounds and a mixer, which everyone enjoyed (except
those who didn't participate, but stayed instead in the kitchen sampling
the huge variety of pies).
With the season's ending coming closer....we're looking forward to our
pot-luck supper and our Annual "Moonlight on the Hudson" dance in June.

The Crazy Hat Dance was full of laughs. One thing about our club is we sure are creative. We recently were Television Stars! Channel 9 came
to our St. Patrick's Day dance. The program was "aired" late in March.
We were pleased to be part of a promotion for New Jersey Square Dancing.
We raided the Lakeland Squares and the Ironia Reelers. Both clubs are
friendly and we felt welcome.
The slate of new officers are: Pres., Royann/Fred Blakeley; V.P.,
James Andorko; Sect., Helen/Fred Lutot and Sara/Bob Allison are returning
as our Treasurers. We want to thank our outgoing officers: Terry/Bill
Armstrong, Ann/Al Johnson and Gail/Dave Wetzel. It was a very successful
year, thanks to their leadership. Thank you from the botton of our hearts

When Richmond Dancers raid, they really raid! Statens were fortunate
to have 36 R.D. members join us at our Mar. 4th dance. We enjoyed their
new presentation of the raiders for the pinning of our banner. Marching
in yellow and black costumes and ending with lines facing the spectators,
they simultaneously bowed to acknowledge the applause from the sidelines.
Quite impressive! We also applauded Ralph Trout for calling a great
dance and Donna Anderson for cueing the rounds delightfully! We're
proud of the Dudleys' premiere performance of "By the Sea" at Brian
Fugere's Pocono Manor Weekend. Marie sang while Bill provided visual
effects making for a most successful "duet." Bravo! Meanwhile, in
Bermuda, the Stevensons and the Wielands were warmly welcomed by "MidOcean Promenaders," who presented them special visitor dangles. Ron Boys
called and a memorable time was had by all. It is time again to enjoy
the NNJSDA's Wednesday night Summer Dances. We hope to join members of
the Class of '89 in a square and to share some "Fun and Friendship" (our
club motto).

Graduation time is near and we will be graduating a class of 27 students
which includes 5 young students in the 10-12 age group. We will have at
least 2 students who attended 100% of the classes.
We had two squares out for a demo at the Wayne Masonic Temple in March.
Bob Robinson was our caller for the evening. We were even able to enlarge
the dancing group to three squares during two tips with members of the Masons and their wives learning some basic calls. Those participating enjoyed the dancing.
Due to snow, the school was closed on the night of our Presidents Dance.
The dance was rescheduled with Ray Lehberger calling. This was also our
St. Patricks Day Dance. We held this dance and guess what (?), it snowed.
By the time the dance was over, cars and ground were covered with snow. We
hope everyone got home safely.
With winter over, we look forward to seeing all our members and friends
who travel to warmer climes during the "cold, cold" winter - once again.
But don't forget to call ahead to make sure we are dancing. Again we remind you...if schools in Wayne are closed for any reason, the club does
not dance.

This year, the members of Somerset Hills, Hill City and Dancing Squares
have been considering the best direction to take for our clubs for the future of square dancing in northern New Jersey. Based on our discussions,
we have decided to merge into a new club -- HARMONY DANCERS -- which will
begin operation in the fall at the Deerfield School in Mountainside, N.J.
This has been a difficult decision for all of us, and we hope we will have
the support and understanding of the other clubs in our area - as we begin to create a new tradition.
We are very excited about the prospects for the new club. It has been
a real pleasure to work with the members of Dancing Squares and Hill City,
to find a positive way to carry square dancing forward. Even if we were
not becoming partners in the new club, we would have been greatly rewarded just to have had the opportunity to work with them. We have also been
pleased by the inte-reet 4 nsquare dancing shown by the Mountainside Board
of '11cLeation, which will be sponsoring our dances.
HARMONY DANCERS will offer both mainstream and plus dancing. In addition, we will offer round dancing at all dances. We will also be sponsoring a class. Look for our ad in the next Grand Square !!

As I write this, I'm also sending out confirmation letters to callers
who have agreed to be with us next year. This means: 1) that Solitaires
will be around for another wonderful year of dancing and 2) that we can
always use more help in keeping the club alive. If you didn't volunteer
for an executive office this year, - how about bringing refreshments to a
dance or offering to call a few members who haven't been to Solitaires for
an '

awhile. Your rewards will be a stronger, healthier
of the friendships that have kept some of us dancing with Solitaires for
so many years.
We welcomed back Lucy Tardif and Joe Landspurg - after several months
absence. Also on a social note, Congratulations to Sue Tobiason, who became an aunt, when her sister gave birth to a girl on Easter weekend.
Though Solitaires won't be dancing as a club during the summer, we hope
that many members will take advantage of the Association dances and summer
dances at neighboring clubs.

See Saws has had a great couple of months. We had the CHINESE AUCTION,
our GROUNDHOG SHUFFLE, OLDIES BUT GOODIES, FLASHLIGHT and WEARING OF THE
GREEN dances. All good dances with special fun at each.
A monster crowd got some great bargains, some great dancing with Mary
Northrup, refreshments were in the spirit of the night with eggrolls at
the Chinese Auction dance. Groundhog Dance had Ray Lehberger in more than
good form. He kept the crowd dancing at a furious pace. Everybody complained with the biggest smile you ever want to see. We didn't know that
Dick Pasvolsky was so old...he proved his age at our OLDIES BUT GOODIES
Dance. Dick had more and more old, forgotten calls. DOES ANYONE OUT THERE
REMEMBER "RED HOT" ?? Dancing Braille Method kind of describes our FLASHLIGHT Dance. Finding your OWN partner in the dark was fun -although sound
of hand hitting cheek was occasionally heard, also some giggles. The
Irish were out in full force in March for WEARIN' OF THE GREEN Dance. Jigs
and reels inspired Mary Northrup to new heights of calling..much to the delight of the dancers.
We look forward to seeing and dancing with you .. SOON. If not now -then in the Fall. Our first plus dance will be 3rd Sat. in September with
Joe Fazekas calling. Our 1st M/S dance will be in October with John Kaltenthaler calling. Round dancers, at both dances, will enjoy the cueing
of Nick & Carole Raspa.

This year has been a very special one for our club. We held our annual
Live Music Special which was also our 35th Anniversary Dance. It was a
huge success. Everyone who attended and helped organize it..had a great
time. Thanks to all you dancers and to our club members for making the
dance possible. Special thanks are in order for our caller and cuer, Betsy
& Roy Gotta. Betsy has been calling for Rutgers for 20 years and Roy has
been cueing for 10 years; A N Dthey have been members for longer than that.
You both are wonderful and even though we don't always say it..we really do
appreciate all the hard work you put into our dances.
Congratulations...to all of our NEW Spring semester graduates. We look
forward to seeing you (as well as our other club members) at our Annual
Summer Picnic and we also look forward to seeing you back dancing with us
next fall....as well as seeing lots of visitors too.

and the daffodils have appeared. But there is still time to renew those
resolutions that faded with the holidays. As a powerful motivation, pull

table! WellI try. Richmond Dancers' happenings: Norman/Susan Reid attended the Bermuda S/D Convention; Bill/America Letteri have returned
from AZ; heard from Jean Fricke in FL; Mary Gorham is back from CA: and
Rana Pettit's heart is still in Madeira, Portugal. The Association
dance on Mar. 31 and the NJS&RDC on Apr. 1 were well attended by Richmond Dancers. Congratulations and welcome to our new members, George/
Helen Nadeau and Sam/Rose Rutigliano. Let's be aware that new dancers
are square dancing's future. All new dancers out there, make the great
effort to attend the Association's Summer Dance s. Events to remember:
our Christmas Dance chaired by Ray/Clara Friscia (with Mr. & Mrs. Santa);
the Beach Party Dance that Jim/Helen Dunlop chaired (didn't you love the
bathing suits on the figures) and the Extra Touch Valentine Dance, chaired by Sandy/Marcia Rubenstein. A special well done for this year's

Romeo/Pat Pettinato; Secretaries: Jim/Helen Dunlop; Sam/Grace 1ppolito,

Princeton has had a very busy and active 1989. On Fridays, our Plus
club has had many wonderful callers as well as cuers. In March, Bill Heyman was here with his friend Stefan Sidholm from Sweden. That was a fun
dance had by all. In April, Curley Custer is scheduled to be at Nottingham Ballroom for our Spring Fling. In May, John Carlton, our club caller,
will be calling along with Ellen Fury on rounds for our Annual Meeting.
This meeting includes the election of officers as well as a Pot Luck Supper at 6:30. ALL ARE WELCOME. The Summer program will begin in June with
Lee Kopman calling and Ron & Ree Rumble on rounds.
Plus lessons (not workshop) will begin the end of May at the University
Heights School on Paxson Ave., Hamilton Township. For information, call:

Mainstream has been the "Hopping" place on Wednesdays. We had our Valentines Party with everyone and everything in red and in March, we were all
in green for St. Patty's Day. April was our Ice Cream Special, where every
one brought a delicious topping for the ice cream. The Graduating class
has been slowly appearing on Wednesdays and is doing a wonderful job! They
will have their first official dance in May. The Class has 42 students
from the ages of 8 to 71. Mid-May is their Graduation at the Nottingham
Ballroom. John Carlton has done a wonderful job teaching this class.
Princeton Rounds have been learning a lot of Swing and Cha Cha type of
dances. The round they are learning now is "You're the Top Cha". They had
a fancy round dance party in April and they average 20 couples - who are
dancing anything from Phase 1 to Phase IV or V. Ron & Ree Rumble are doing
a great job. Princeton is doing fine and would like to welcome anyone to
come to our dances.

Our 1989 year finally started March 3, with an enjoyable and challenging dance by Dave Smith. Weather prevented our dancing in January and February. Lessons started last fall are now winding down and "D" day, that
first dance date of the new program is approaching. The level or the number of programs previously completed does not diminish the importance of
feeling welcome. We need new dancers at Montville and ALL are welcome.

We are very pleased to announce that Glenn Matthew has agreed to be our
Club Caller beginning this summer. His first dance in this new capacity
will be in September but he will be very active with us in our recruitment
demos. Glenn has often guest-called for the Merri-Eights and is a favorite
of our campers, too. He will conduct our class in Sept. and will also run
a DBD (APD for the die-hards) workshop for an hour before class each week.
In February, we held our Deborah Benefit Dance with class level in the
afternoon and Plus level in the evening. Joe Fioretti, Barry Serebnick &
Glenn Matthew presided and Peg Tristram cued rounds in the evening. We are
proud to have contributed nearly $500 to Deborah. Be sure to mark the 1st
Sunday in February, 1990 -for next year's Deborah Benefit Dance - we scheduled it a week earlier to avoid conflict with other class dances.
We raided the Princeton Squares with 19 %, couples in March, when Dill
Heyman and Stefan Sidholm, from Sweden, called a very enjoyable dance. It's
no lie, foreign callers do use the same terminology that we are accustomed
to hearing. Our annual Barn Dance in March was a success, as usual. Thanks
to Frank/Lucille, Joe/Jane and especially Phil and Ursula. Attendance was
a little lighter than it has been but enthusiasm ran high and we all had a
great time.

When you are the GRAND SQUARE reporter, you count your Year from the
first report deadline to the last. This being the last, one tends to pause
for an over-the-shoulder glance at our dance year just ending. It has been
a fine year for the M.T. Squares. We moved to a new dance location at the
Avenel Learning Center, which has proven to be a move in the right direction.
Na have been raided by a numbeL of Eine clubs, in many cases I'm sure-- in
response to our raids. That is a worthwhile activity that should not diminish. Also not to diminish thru the summer is round dancing with Peg/Joe
Dockry ...Thurs. from 7:00 to 10:00 with intermediate workshops from 7:00
to 8:00 at our Menlo Park Terrace location.
In my first report for this dance season, I pointed to the preseason work
done by executive board members in order to guarantee an enjoyable year for
their clubs. At that time, the M.T. Squares had good reason to look forward
to an exciting season of dance and at this point, I join my fellow members
in thanking Mary/Mike Adleman and their hard working board for one of our
best years.
At the time this GRAND SQUARE hits the street...there will be only one
or two dances left on many club schedules. You can find us at the Avenel
Learning Center for the next few 1st and 3rd Saturdays, with pre-rounds from
7:30 and the regular squares from 8:00 to 10:30. We'd love to see you!!!

The St. Ratrick's dance with Bob Tarrant on squares & Al/Gale Spinks
cueing rounds - was a great success. As usual, our cooks out did themselves
with a delicious selection of soups and Irish soda bread. Thanks go to Roz/
John Wendland and their helpers!
Raid chairpersons Anne/Ed Alexander have been doing a great job. In Feb.
we raided Somerset Hills and took our class to Belles & Beaux student dance.
In March, we were raided by Leisure Squares. Everyone had a good time.
This substitute reporter is glad to tell you that President Mary Northrup
is recovering nicely from her recent surgery. We have also been missing
Lorraine Wahlers at our dances due to illness. Our best wishes for a speedy
recovery to both Mary and Lorraine !!

February was a busy month. On one Monday, we did a demo for each gym
square dance class at Vernon High with Larry Davenport calling from 8 A.M.
until noon - when the school treated us to a delicious lunch. Larry continued to call for the students for the remainder of the day! Larry was
the first "live" caller to whom the class had danced. There were some very
good dancers and we will try to keep them interested in square dancing after
graduation.
On the following Sunday, a couple of squares went to Methodist Manor Retirement Home for a demo and audience participation. Everybody, including
caller Dick Pasvolsky, was having so much fun that they kept dancing way beyond the intended time. Also, in the same month, was the "All Officers Ball"
We've been doing some line dancing on the evenings when we've been without a round dance cuer. It keeps the muscles warmed up ... !!!!

Our gala graduation in April was attended by all members-who extended
their warm congratulations to our 30 plus graduates, who will now enjoy
the benefits of good will and camaraderie that square dancing affords.
This month will feature our Crazy Hat Special and our Ice cream Social
and in June, we're anticipating our end season Pot Luck Dinner-Dance.

another class of seven couples. In February, the new members were welcomed
to J & M at a dance called by Randy Page, who came with a group from his
club. Everyone had a wonderful time.

The "Class of '89" now takes its' place in the "Wonderful World of Square
Dancing". It's up to the more experienced dancers to make them feel welcome
and wanted. Encourage them to attend the Summer dances and attend them yourselves...whenever you can. The Graduates have worked long and hard hours.
They deserve the rewards that will be theirs , as they bid farewell to the
Student days and become regular Full-fledged Dancers.
However, new dancers as well as experienced dancers should keep in mind,
that as the "Class of '89" becomes a finished chapter in the history of S/D'g,
plans for the "Class of '90" must be made. This will require some effort on
all our parts. It's the only way to guarantee the future of S/D'g. Talk to
your non-dancing friends. Tell them about the fun you have and tell them about the physical benefits. Tell them about the friendships to be made and

Overshadowing all other events was the difficult decision made in March
to merge Hill City with two other clubs. Following the decision to merge,
representatives of the merged clubs decided to meet first and third Fridays
for Plus dancing and second and fourth Saturdays for Mainstream. The new
club name is HARMONY DANCERS; club colors are royal blue and white. Dancing will take place in Mountainside in a hall described as spacious and
beautiful -- one of the best. Hill City charter members Iry and Blanche
Weaver were present for the vote, reminding members of Hill City's many
years (over 35) of Square Dancing fun and friendship.
Successful Hill City raids continued into the Spring. An impromptu raid
was organized by members for a visit to Somerset Hills, which was preceded
by dinner at a nearby restaurant. This was soon followed by an organized
raid on Valley Squares..preceded by a much appreciated lasagna dinner in
the home of Dwight and Mary Rice.
With the announcement by Leo Eckmann of meeting for dinner at Yardley Inn
during the convention and the invitation by Wayne/Kay Schroeder to eat in
their home preceding club's trip to Manny Amor's live music bash, it was suggested the Club should be dubbed the "eating and dancing" club. President
Jean Richtmyre suggested the need for an affiliation with Weight Watchers!

A busy year of square dancing is coming to a close. The Reelers have

In April we had a dinner dance with good friends, good food, and great

Hats off to all our members who have so faithfully brought us through
so many months of weekly dancing & successful raids. And speaking of
raids, what bettef Lime Lhan now to thank John/Connie Huetteman for
setting up these raids & for the enthusiasm they generate encouraging
club members to participate. In February we held a very successful
Chinese Auction - both monetary/wise and fun/wise - there were so many
lovely items to bid on & take home. Our Presidents' Night was well
attended by the Presidents/officers of our neighboring clubs & we thank
them sincerely for coming out. They well deserve the recognition that
is bestowed on them.
There can be no doubt that all who attended the Annual Dinner Dance
at the Brownstone Inn found it a perfect way to spend a dreary Sunday
afternoon when it is neither winter nor spring. There was certainly
nothing dreary about the great dancing, delicious dinner, and everyone
looking great in their Sunday Best. Allana & her committee did a super
job putting it all together. The best treat was having Jack Cochrane
back, joining us at this affair. It has been said that Ed Johnson is
"waltzing" the Malls, which would indicate that he is getting ready to
waltz around the Club with his lovely Ruth by his side - hope it's soon!
Before long we'll have all our students graduating & would like to
remind them that Hix & Chix dances every week all summer in our fully
air-conditioned hall. We invite YOU to join us & share in the hospitality

This is the 22nd year of the FREELOADER Program which is open to
ALL 1989 GRADUATES of ANYclub. Simply attend 8 of the 10 NNJSDA
/ summer dances (see covers) - have your FREELOADER card signed by
the Treasurer. Dangles will be awarded at the Aug. 23 dance.
All who qualify will receive a special pass entitling them to attend six
NNJSDA dances (with certain exceptions) over the next two years free. If
you have misplaced your FREELOADER card, they will be available at the

As we approach the end of our 26th S/D season at Hi Taws, we want to
thank the members/friends who have shared our fun & fellowship on Tuesday
nights. We especially express our appreciation to our Presidents, the
Weiss)
s; our committee of Vice Presidents: the Hamiltons, Pangborns,
Peres', Corcorans & Rellingers; & Treasurers, the Marcels. Now the task
of recruiting officers for next year is upon us. We're happy to report
we have volunteers for VP, Seely, & Treas., but as of this writing, we
have no volunteer for Pres. - HELP! We'd like to plan another exciting
dance program for next season.
Spring was a busy/exciting time with special dances/festivals, & the
NJ State Convention. Our own Herb Rivkin, who has been teaching a R/D
Basics class, has also been busy cueing at area clubs, the NJ Convention,
& even at the Connecticut festival, where much to the delight of the
dancers, he was an on-the-spot substitute for one of the CT cuers. Our
R/D program is thriving to the point where Roy Gotta is teaching the R/D
& S/D rounds of the month lst/3rd Tuesdays. We're looking forward to
our annual dinner dance in June at the Colonial Manor, Old Tappan, NJ.
Our 3 regular callers (Hugh Jones, John Kaltenthaler, & Bob Mitchell)
will he there for our S/D pleasure along with our regular cuers Roy Gotta
& Nick Raspa for our R/D enjoyment.

thoughts turn to camping. We had an early bird special in April & another
weekend in May before settling into our usual 2nd weekend campouts for
the summer. A lucky extra this year is our end of Sept mini-camporee at
the Sussex Co. fairgrounds, where we hdd such a fantastic week when we
sponsored the NSDCampers Annual Camporee. It should be even more extra
special this time as we will be sharing the spacious Sussex Co.fairgrounds
with the hot air balloon enthusiasts. Keep you posted!

If you saw our flyers & thought we mis-spelled Head ANGLE dance - you
could talk to those people who danced as ANGLES that night! F.A.D. has
the distinction of being the first club to hire Vince Anthony, with
C.B.S. grabbing him for the same date (class dance). Once again, Bill/
Vera Clampett shared their woodcraft with St Pat's dancers - THANKS!
The NJ State convention generated plenty of enthusiasm, which spilled
over into our Amateur Caller event the next night. Cross Trails' new
graduate, Frank Benvenuti, volunteered to start, before he had a chance
to be nervous; followed by fix & Chix VP Dick Dexter, who made Brenda
proud. A pleasant surprise was the lovely, low voice of Betty Hughes,
with a little help/hindrance from Vince, while FAD's VP Jim Broderick
shone in spite of Pat's absence (recuperating from a shattered kneecap).
We've all missed Pat, who should be back by the time you read this.
Belles & Beaux incoming VP, Dick Mazziotti, proved beyond any doubt that
his voice doesn't require amplification - we'd like to figure out just
exactly what the dancers were doing when he called "grand square"! Fran
Wadel, Tenafly's VP, called while leaning on crutches - another first.
Our ever-faithful Caller's Hauler, who willingly squares up every dance
night with various & sundry ladies, treated the dancers to a final
singing call - George, we all love you, even if it took 5 figures to get
everyonaback to their original partner!
There's still time to enter our photo contest - prizes include free
admission to our AIR CONDITIONED summer dances. New graduates joining
FAD now receive 18 months of Fun At Dancing for the price of 12. We
welcome new members Custy/Pat Demikoff, Jacques/Rose Godfrin, Mickey
Orsages, Frank/Martha Zintl. Betty Hughes/Vince Anthony. Welcome!

Hi. fellow dancers! We have NEWS! Dancing Squares is very proud and
happy to announce our merger with Somerset Hills and Hill City. Please
watch for our ads & flyers as "HARMONY DANCERS" in the future.
We were delighted to welcome club raids by Valley Squares & Y Squares;
they certainly added lots of fun & fellowship to our dances. We also
returned the warm friendship by raiding Richmond Dancers & Valley Squares,
where we were made to feel most welcome. This spring & summer we plan to
demonstrate in the Memorial Day Parade & in the Summer Cultural Arts
Program in Scotch Plains. We've participated in these events previously

Martha/Roger Hathaway & Mildred/Walt Angerer were responsible for
making our annual dinner dance such a gala affair. This reporter was
very honored to be presented the Croix de Square, an award for service
to the club. Dancers at our St. Patrick's event had a special treat
when Kathleen Vesey, a lovely young lady from Clifton, entertained us
with Irish ballads. Everyone who participated in the candlelight bowl
had a wonderful time, according to Betty/Marty Jobrack. This was the
2nd successful year & just may become an annual event. Let's hope so!
Ginny (Measley) & Lon Murchison, head angels, were recently married
& had a reception for the students. In spite of, or because of, this
extra-curricular activity, the students are progressing well & looking
forward to graduation. Dot/Andy Meador, chair, should be proud of a
job well done. Eric Pollock & the nominating committee presented the
slate of officers at the general membership meeting. Slate was accepted,
as follows: PRES: Russ/Laura Safar, 1ST VP: Dot/Andy Meador, 2ND VP:
Roz/Lou Friedlander. TREAS: Evelyn Boucher/Bob Hopf, SEC: Pat/Walt Sickles

A St. Patrick's Day theme is always on our calendar of dances. This
year there was the usual abundance of green, with Fran Cashill proudly
wearing her brand-new, lovely, green dress, gift from son & dtr-in-law
in Missouri. Demos are very much a part of our club doing. Lately there
was one at the Ahearns' son's Scott's school & another at the Elks Club
in Nutley. They were both a lot of fun & very rewarding. We also raid
and are raided regularly. A great group of 4 squares from Spinning Wheels
raided us in Jan. and brought with them much warmth & fellowship. We
thank them. We, in turn, raided Cross Trail Squares with 3+ squares.
All of us enjoyed dancing & being with these nice people.
This year we're celebrating our 15th anniversary & congratulations are
in order. We enjoyed our special anniversary dinner dance with John K.
& Herb Rivkin; anniversary dance with Joe Fazekas & the McLaughlins.
Cross Trails made this dance eveii moLe special by raiding us. We would
be remiss if we didn't mention our wonderful PRES: Margy/Wally Cox. They
& their officers & committee members have been outstanding. Come visit
us & make this year our best one yet.

Roland/Monica Grover led the club on a mystery bus ride into the wilds
of Penna. to a dance held by a club whose name should be on the Weight
Watchers 'ten most wanted' list - CALORIE SQUARES! This was the 2nd time
at one of their dances & they earned their name honestly both times with
their food table. We're lucky the bus wasn't cited for overweight on the
return trip! We wonder if a club named 'Weight Watchers Squares' would
draw a crowd? Plans are being made for a club picnic in June with eating
& dancing in the park. Sept. again marks the beginning of a new season.

a great promotional phamplet "What Is Modern Western Square
Square Dancing Dancing". It is available for recruitment purposes, but can
1,00-' be used for other purposes. There are names and addresses for
folks interested in the S/D activity to call AND plenty of room
for a club to add personal contacts in their own immediate area.
These phamphlets are available from the 2nd VP - (see back cover)
or from the GRAND SQUARE Editors. Remember tho, while these handouts are
great, it is the PERSONAL invitation and bringing of a non-dancer to the
class - the personal touch - that is the best approach.

Anyone that missed the Feb. dance surely missed an unusual event.
Adding to the fun of a raid by Cross Trails & Western Wheelers, 5 couples
from W.W. (unknown to our Pres & everyone else) dressed in formal evening
attire, bedecked in jewels and furs; made a formal 'champagne' toast to
'The House of Cloverleafs' from 'The House of Western Wheelers' (Leo/Rose
Rogers, Gus/Marilyn Bachmann, John/Madelyn Kerner, Andy/Gerry Musante,
Ed/Clara Klotz). These 5 couples later joined fellow W.W. in a raid of
4+ squares. The spirit of the 'toast' carried on throughout the night,
creating a most friendly & enjoyable occasion.
Our Presidents' dance in March with Ray Lehberger calling, was a funfilled night. We had a great turnout of pres. from all over. It's always
a pleasure to honor these people for all the time & hard work they put
into their clubs & S/D for our enjoyment. Thank you, Doc/Peg Tirrell,
our cuers; and John/Connie Huetteman, our pres., for adding much pleasure
to our dances.

A square dancer can look forward to a good weekend in northeastern
Bergen County by coming to one of our Fri. niLe MS dances. Circle 8's
sponsors the 4th Fri. of each month; other clubs host dances on 2nd &
3rd Fridays. We've designed new raid dangles & invite all clubs to
raid us with 2 or more squares. We filled the hall with a good crowd
in Feb. at our Presidents' Ball. The tasty treats served by our refreshment committee was just the icing on the cake of an enjoyable dance.
Circle Eights is one of the sponsoring clubs for the New Milford Tenderfeet. In May we hope to graduate 2 doz. new dancers, taught this year
by Andy Woerner. We hope they'll take advantage of all the graduate
dances being sponsored by us & other clubs. The only way to polish your
dancing is to keep dancing. It's fun, relaxing, and you'll leave with a
smile on your face.
On a more sombre note, we'd like to extend our sympathy to Mrs. Anton
on the death of her husband, Charles. Charles enjoyed S/D & passed away
at the Belles & Beaux student dance.

We are all looking forward to Our new graduates and new members joining
us at the Glen Rock air conditioned Jewish Center starting the 3rd Tues.
in June and on the first and third Tues. thru the summer. August is
"Century Book" month when you will have the chance to dance to callers
who are generally not in our area. When this appears, two busloads of
dancers will know the destination of our Mystery Bus Ride and have danced
to one caller at dinner and another when we raided our mystery club. In
March we enjoyed listening to the history of John Katenthaler's square
dance experiences at "Dear John" night. John returned in May with an all
singing call evening. Celebrating our 10th Anniversary, the club met at
the Brody's in April & then raided FAD. We raided FAD, Tenakill Twirlers
and were raided by Hix & Chix , FAD and also Lakeland Squares at one of
our Sunday student dances. Our last 2 regular Wed. dances in May E. June

AL"e"MO had a very good fall/winter season. We graduated 19 students,
we had some very successful Sunday dances with some excellent callers, &
we had at least 1 full square at the Caldwell mid-term dance, with more
than 1 square at the NJ Convention in Trenton.
For spring & summer we're planning some public exhibitions. After
graduation. thru August, we'll have weekly dances at Phillips Dance
Studio which is AIR CONDITIONED! We invite members of other clubs to
join us - as in the past, we rebate $4 for 4 or more dancers coming in
one car from Staten Island or New Jersey, to defray your tolls.

We're grateful for the returned good health of some of our club members,
Mary Gorham, Kit Willmot and one of our Presidents, Oscar Michaud. A few
weeks after coming home from the hospital, Oscar made the trip to the 3rd
Annual Square Dance Convention in Trenton. Other members, Ann Kravitz,
Hope Engelson and Patty Connors also went and seemed to have enjoyed themselves. Patty worried about me being alone tending my shop and took time
out of her festivities a couple of times to bring me a cup of cold water.
Donna Anderson (wife of caller Bill Anderson, who did a great job calling
our Feb. dance) also spelled me while I had to leave the room briefly.
Thanks ladies. We had a super St. Patrick's dance with Bill Heyman calling, and some marvelous March Mitten tips with John Carlton calling. Our
club caller, Dick Pasvolsky, calls a fine dance, filling in with line
dances sometimes. Once in a while we are even lucky enough to be visited
by new caller and line dancer leader, Lois Bichler. Some of the R.I.O.S.
students have been attending our Mainstream dances and getting some extra
practice in addition to their lesson night. I'm sure this will hone their
dance skills even sharper. Frank Riviccio is a terrific teacher and we
are priviledged to have these students joining us at our dances.

LADIES' BELT "SLIP-COVER"
What a wonderful time everyone seemed to be having at
the 3rd Annual Square Dance Convention. I was lucky enough
to spend the entire day with my shop in the last available
vendor space. I needed an idea for this column, so, while
I didn't get to dance, I did get to talk, and most of all
listen, to some terrific people who visited and, sure enough
came through, unbeknownst to them.
Several ladies were looking for belts in colors I didn't
have. I didn't think of it then but it has since occurred
to me that I solved that problem once by making a fabric
slip-cover" for one of my stretch belts.
Put a stretch belt on and then measure the elastic part
(not the metal or plastic fasteners) around your waist. Add.
3" (or more if you need "growing room") to that for the cutting length. For the cutting width, measure the height of
the stretch belt (usually between 2" & 3"), double that, and
add 1" seam allowance. You now know the size of the piece
of fabric you need for the "slip-cover". You may want to
use the same fabric as the dress or just the same or coordinated color as your dress, slip, shoes,partner's shirt or
whatever.
Fold fabric the long way, right sides together, and
stitch the 2 long sides together leaving the ends of dais
long tube open. Turn this tube right side out however you
choose, then push one end of the stretch belt through the
tube, keeping the seam centered in the back.
Fold 1" or 1i" of the front side through the metal
fastener however the elastic is put through, fold neatly
with the back fabric and safety pin in place. You can
stitch this if you want a more permanent cover.
If you have a "butterfly belt" or the kind of stretch
belt where the elastic can be adjusted by opening 2 prongs
and removing the metal fasteners then do that, cover the
elastic with your fbric tube, and put your new "slipcovered" belt back in the metal fasteners as one.

"Perceptions" - 60 seconds - a narrative concerning perceptive impressions
Theme: S/Ding is a fun/friendly recreation; S/Ding is what's

happening. At the end of each taped commercial is a spot for insertion
of a phone number for info. Because these tapes were designed as public
service announcements, your local TV station should not charge you for
'air time'. Those who've viewed the tapes are most enthusiastic. Several
callers came home from the CALLERLAB convention with these Lapes. Both
SDCNJ and CCNJ may be contacted if you can get them on the air.
This, the first project of the CALLERLAB Foundation, is a step in the
right direction of the Callerlab 1989 theme of "Recruit, Promote, Maintain

ROUNDALAB will be conducting its 13th convention in
Oklahoma City, OK June 18-21, 1989. Many teachers
(i) from the U.S.. Canada & overseas have indicated they

0i0 will be attending. Unlike the NSDC, the ROUNDALAB
convention is not a dancing convention, but is a
"sit-down" working convention where the attendees not only consider the
business aspects of the organization, but spend much time discussing,
defining and placing figures in ROUNDALAB's Six Phases of round dancing.
This year ROUNDALAB will also be preparing a teaching progression guideline in the form of a list broken out into the ROUNDALAB Phases by rhythms
and updating the ROUNDALAB Reference Manual. The new video tapes will be
previewed at this meeting. Various committees meet daily from 9 to 5
while evening hours are devoted to educational programs. Although the
convention officially closes Tuesday. anall day Teachers' Seminar/Clinic
is conducted on Wednesday, which most attend.
Following these busy four days, most ROUNDALAB members stay for the
remainder of the week to volunteer their services and participate in
the National Square Dance Convention. Teaching units who attend ROUNDALAB & remain for the NSDC are a dedicated group of professional leaders..
They are not only giving up at least a week of vacation and/or family
time, but are also spending their own money - well over $1,500. No one
ever received any remuneration for this week and few ever have any time
to even go sightseeing. Their reward is in the fun and fellowship of
the activity, honing their own skills and expertise, expanding their
knowledge and knowing that they are contributing to the fori4ard progress
of the round dance movement. If your leaders are among those present
in Oklahoma City, please tell them "THANK YOU" and that you do appreciate
their riPriieaten.

ROUND OF THE QUARTER- The Classic Committee Chairman, Jo Yakimowski,
has announced that there will be NO Round-of-the Quarter chosen for
the 2nd & 3rd quarters in 1989. Some of our members have expressed a
growing concern over choreographers who write round dances to pop labels
when making a choice. These and other concerns will be fully addressed
in June at ROUNDALAB's 13th Convention in Oklahoma City, OK. The ROUNDALAB 1989 Classic List of dances most frequently programmed will be
finalized at the June Convention.

LEGACY is a non-profit International Assembly of "Trustees" of the S/D activity representing ALL facets of Square Dancing including dancers, cuers, callers, suppliers,

has been defined as a leadership-communications resource center. Trustees meet biennially, in the odd year, to exchange ideas and formulate proposals and
guidelines for the good of the overall activity. Leaders from all over the
world will be gathering in mid May, at their own expense, in Nevada to compare mutual areas of interst, discuss similar areas of concern and formulate
solutions. Last year's NNJSDA's LUST'88
could be likened to a mini-LEGACY.

Frank and Helen Cavanaugh, Chairmen of the American
Folk Dance Committee for Legacy, Inc., proudly announce that the Idaho Federation of Square and Round
Dance clubs has just accomplished mission improbable!
In just 5 short WEEKSthey met with Representative
Kathleen "Kitty" Gurnsey who introduced a resolution
to the Idaho House of Representatives designating the
Square Dance as the American Folk Dance of Idaho, where
it received a very enthusiatic "Do Pass". In the Senate, Roger Madsen presented the resolution along with an excellent explanation of Square Dance
history and the benefits to Idaho. Here it passed unanimously and
enthusiastically!
Idaho dancers have a right to brag about their accomplishment. They are
the 10th state to so ratify the resolution. Congratulations to Ted & Joy

UNITED SQUARE DANCERS OF AMERICA
The USDA, which was formed in 1981, is a nationwide
organization of dancers. Originally the vast majority
of its officers were from CA, but as the organization
(c-CL
grew, its officers began to represent various regions
of the US. Former NNJSDA Presidents, Frank/Nan Habersberger, serve as its Treasurer & spearheaded an unsuccessful campaign for
designating the Square Dance the National Folk Dance. The USDA provides
members with an economical accident and group disability insurance; initiated a "handicapable" dance program; and provides educational and leadership handouts. They also have a program to obtain a Square Dance
Commemorative Stamp and recently introduced a Square Dancers Mastercard.

The Square Dance Council of New Jersey (SDCNJ) is an
association of eight organizations that comprise the S/D
picture in N.J. They sponsored the first two N.J. State
Conventions and were almost too successful. The success
generated profits and a controversy.
The N.J. State Convention, like many other state conventions and the National Square Dance Convention, was
staffed by volunteers, all of whom paid a registration
fee. There were some members of the SDCNJ (who are delegates from
callers', cuers', and dancers' associations) who felt that the callers
and cuers should not have to pay the registration fee, since they were
donating their time and, in some cases, had given up paying jobs to support the convention.
Other delegates felt that the other volunteers,
who gave much time to the convention work, would feel slighted if the
callers and cuers were not charged. The fact that the first two conventions had not only paid for themselves, but generated considerable profit
was used by both factions as a support to their positions.
Meanwhile, CALLERLAB was forming a Foundation with the purpose of promoting square dancing and preserving our dance heritage. Betsy Gotta, a
Delegate to the SDCNJ and a Member of the Board of Governors of CALLERLAB,
took on the job of N.J. fund raising chairman for the CALLEILAB Foundation.
A letter to various people around the state requesting help to hold fund
raising dances produced the opinion that extra dances would not help the
N.J. square dance picture at this time. Betsy then sent a letter to the
Square Dance Council of New Jersey requesting that a portion of the profits from the first two N.J. State Conventions he donated to the CALLERLAB
Foundation. As a caller, she felt that her registration fee would be well
spent if it helped generate profit which would help the CALLERLAB
Foundation.
The SDCNJ delegates, members of Bucks-Trenton District, Callers' Council of N.J., Central N.J. Square Dance Association, Dance Leaders of Delaware Valley, Delaware Valley Round Dance Teachers Council, Northern . N.J.
Round Dance Leaders Council, Northern N.J. Square Dancers Association,
and the Penn-Jersey District, carefully considered both questions. They
voted to donate 10% of the profits ($1,288.00) to the CALLERLAB Foundation.
They also voted to establish criteria, including a local program, which
would exempt the callers, cuers, and other professional leaders from the
payment of the registration fee.
The Third N.J. State Convention was recently held and was another success. That probably means more profits. The SDCNJ has several projects
in mind to use the money to promote square dancing. One currently being
tried is sponsoring a newsletter for class dancers to help them feel included in the total square dance picture.
Delegates of the SDCNJ should be proud of their solution to their problem. They definitely are proud to have contributed to the commercials
recently produced by the CALLERLAB Foundation.

I am responding to the letter in the Winter Issue and
would like to expand on the ideas presented. Here are a few
ideas to reach out to all ages: *Demos with a mixture of
all ages. Have the audience join in. *Perhaps the NNJSDA
could prepare Cable TV ads showing people of all ages enjoying our activity. *Put on demos at western/folk dancing
clubs, etc. These people are already pre-disposed to an activity like
square dancing. *A club or closely situated group of clubs could hire a

hayrides, etc., try to arrange a demo. *Make everyone feel welcome and
be happy if younger people in your club want to he officers! (More ideas
to follow in the next issue).

Re: "How Do We Treat Our Future Leaders?"
Just last night I found myself at a country western dinner dance. It
was packed with mostly 20's/30's people. I found myself reflecting on the
reason that these young people were not in square dancing. One reason

I hate prearranged squares. I would be happiest to always be the first
one up, come who may, to fill the square. I always urge that everything
possible be done to make the newer dancer comfortable. But I have also
been accused of pushing, pulling, demeaning. Most people are happiest
when they square up and keep dancing with a minimum of breakdown. I have
also apologized to people because I thought I had pushed or pulled just
to keep us going and have had them thank me for helping them keep dancing.

has been - "Look in the New England Caller - woops- now called the Northeast Square Dancer Magazine." Begun umpteen years ago by Charlie Baldwin
it was acquired by Ray/Carole Aubut seven years ago. During their period
of editorship they changed the name to reflect it was a dancer as well as
caller oriented publication and also added a number of contributing editors. They also began including much more news from outside areas letting
their dancers know our favorite recreation is truly worldwide. Now Ray/
Carole are retiring to travel around in their motor home and enjoy some

Those of us who have been a part of this activity greet you most enthusiastically and tell you that some of the happiest days of your life are
yet to come. Whatever it was that brought you into this activity, whether
it was the recommendation of friends, curiosity or desire to learn comething different, you will soon discover many reasons to be glad that you
became a square dancer.
Like almost any social recreation, square dancing has certain guidelines which add to the pleasures of the activity. Here's a list of ten
from The Square Dancers' Indoctrination Handbook - 1- Be a good listener.
2- Get into squares quickly. 3- Be a courteous dancer. 4- Be on time
for clubs and class. 5- Be a thoughtful dancer. 6- Be a cooperative
dancer. 7- Take it easy. 8- Be a friendly dancer. 9- You are never
through learning. and 10- ENJOY yourself- HAVE FUN!.

just by being in the right place at the right time with the proper hands
ready.
Enjoy each step in your square dancing experiences. The true
fun in our activity is not based on "how much you know" but on how well
you can do those things you already have been taught and how friendly you
you are. And make plans now to bring your non-dancing friends along to
next year's beginners class.

The NNJ Round Dance Leaders Council met recently at the home of Paul/
Jeanne Brody. Jean Kellogg, moderator, suggested a survey be taken on
whether or not the Rounds of the Month were used at the Square Dance
clubs. Round Dancers should request that the S/D ROM be taught at
their S/D club. At the July RDLC meeting, Bonnie Busch will conduct a
voice workshop and show proper use of the mike. The Smarrellis (MD)
will be doing a workshop at the October meeting. We hope to see you at
our May RDLC dance. Our fall special will be the 1st Sun. in November.
Did you know the Northern New Jersey Round Dance Leaders Council
(NNJRDLC), comprised of most of the area's cuers, meets periodically to
select Rounds of the Month (ROMs). These selections, chosen for round
dancers in both S/D & R/D clubs, introduce new dances into the area or
highlight a classic dance. The ROM program allows you to travel to
other clubs & dance familiar dances to other cuers, as all Council
members are supposed to include the ROMs in their program. These dances
are also programmed into the NNJRDLC Round Dance Festivals in the spring
and fall. You say you never have the ROMs cued at your club? Then, as a
dancer, you may request they play the ROM. Grand Squarepublishes the
selections. Club officers can, when contracting cuers, request that the
ROMs be workshopped and cued at their club.
It is becoming increasingly common to hear the cuer announce the phase
rating of the dance, along with its title. What, exactly, is a Phase?
And who determines what figures belong to each phase? Phases are standards set by Roundalab. Using the concept of 6 degrees of difficulty
within which to work, ROUNDALAB membership is continually working to place
R/D figures into these 6 categories or phases. Figures, once defined,
are placed in a Phase according to their degree of difficulty as it relates to the amount of turn, the # of steps and/or the difference in each
partner's footwork. Because the R/D activity encourages creativity in
choreography, figures from different phases may be utilized in any given
dance routine. However, the routine is rated according to the phase of
the most difficult figure used.
Phase I and II ("Easy " or S/D rounds) are dances that can be done
to cues, and include classics like "Very Smooth", "Could I Have This
Dance", and "New York, NY". Phase III (some call it "Easy Intermediate")
introduces some newer concepts, figures, and rhythms & includes dances
like "Inner Harbor Waltz", "Answer Me", and "Patricia". These are the
levels cued most often at the club dances and specials in this area.
The remaining levels are Phase IV ("Intermediate") and Phases V ("High
Intermediate") and VI ("Advanced"). Roundalab publishes booklets listing
these figures with the descriptions.
Our council chose as ROMs: APR: S/D "Paradise Waltz", R/D "Dream 'n'
Foxtrot"
MAY: S/D "Fiddlestepper Polka", R/D "Wagon Wheel Rumba".
No ROMs are chosen for the summer months.

Our annual Feb. afternoon of rounds seems so long ago. The weather
was delightful with the full circle of dancers in attendance. Only
complaint...Doc didn't give us much time to enjoy the delicious refreshments. We're all so proud of our class - they're doing so great with
Phase III Basics that Doc has introduced a few of the Phase IV Basics.
Graduation is the 1st Wed. in June. Our club has been working on the
lovely Hawaiian Wedding Song, which is on the RDLC dance program in May.
We take a sabbatical in the summer, but will resume a new class in R/D

We are back in business after a short vacation. Our April dance in
Pomona was a ball for all the new starlets (ex-NQRs). We all look forward to a summer of great tun. As in the past, we'll be dancing all summer in our air conditioned hall. C'mon up and join us.
The entire NQR class as well as a bunch of "old" club members invaded
the NJ State Convention in April, and marched in three squares strong.
Most of us stayed at the Red Roof Inn again (this time the manager didn't
try to kick us out for being too noisy!).
We are also trying an experiment - PLUS dancing on Sunday afternoons
in Bergenfield. Our first Plus dance was in March and everyone who attended had a great time. Working around major Sunday functions and holidays, we'll try it a few more times and see how it goes. See fliers

Mention was made of the GALLERLAB tapes available for TV publicity. Bill
Heyman is donating several sets to NNJSDA. Question asked-"May a club
suspend operations for a year, but still reserve that night for the next
season?" Answer - Suggested they conduct an abbreviated schedule for the
