Box 170760, Austin, TX 78717. Letter From the President Bruce Easley AAF TMFA, TSFA President There are certainly plenty of facts about customs and traditions for the Month of May. Did you know that the Gemstone for May is the Emerald. The Flower of the month is “Lily Of The Valley”. FACT: May was named for the Greek goddess, Maia. The month was called Maia until it was changed to May in 1430. TRADITION: “May Day” is a British Holiday celebrated on May 1st and marks the end of the harsh winter months and welcomes the beginning of Summer. “Mothers Day” is generally celebrated in the U.S. on the second Sunday of May and is generally one of the biggest delivery days of the year for florists. There are also plenty of “sayings” about the month. For instance, April Showers bring May Flowers, or “Mist in May, Heat in June, makes harvest come right soon”. May is filled with many other “floral” holidays and events. Proms, Banquets, Dances, Graduations, and Memorial Day. I would say that May is our time to shine! We are changing things up just a bit this year to make them new and exciting. Saturday night’s event promises to be a “Honky Tonkin’ Good Time”. BBQ, Rodeo, and Dancing at the World’s Famous “Mesquite Rodeo”. Dust off those boots and hats and come ready to two-step. (We might even have some line dancing lessons). This year’s convention will feature the best designers around and we also have 3 business classes scheduled for those owners and managers who wish to improve their business skills. The “Texas Cup” will be on Friday night with a great party going on during that event. Go to the TSFA.org website and see all the incredible programs, hands-on classes, parties, & shopping. The Education Committee is finishing up an incredible year of testing High School students. Over 700 students have been tested for their floral certification this year. The last testing will be in Mesquite on May 23rd. Thanks to all the Committee, Board Members, and TMF’s that have helped us these last few months. TSFA is successful because of its volunteers and we appreciate all of you! The Bloomin’ Texan c May 2013 / 7 2013 TSFA Candidates for Office President Retail Directors (Elect 1) Pam B. Fuller AAF TMFA. I have been in the floral industry for 28 years. I am owner of Bloomers Flower Shop in Harlingen, Texas for the last 21 years and managed it for 7 years prior to buying the business. Flowers have always been my passion and I am very blessed to have a God given talent in floral design. I have been involved in Texas State Florists’ Association for many years, receiving my TMF in 1989 and was among the first class to receive my TMFA. In 2005, I was inducted into the American Academy of Floriculture, which was a great honor. I have served on many committees for TSFA over the years; the Education Committee has always been my favorite on which I served. I have been co-chairman of the Education Committee for the last 2 years. It is such a joy to be able to teach others and share my love and knowledge of flowers. In 2009 I served as convention chairman for TSFA’s 95th annual convention. I served as Retail Director for TSFA from 2007-2009. It has been my pleasure to serve as Second Vice President two years ago and as First Vice President this year. I have 2 wonderful daughters Lezlie and Lenzie and their husbands, Michael and Matt. The joys of my life are my 4 beautiful grandchildren Grayson, Olivia, and the twins, Mason and Maddox. My daughters are both TMF’s and are very active in the floral industry as well. I love gardening, reading, fishing, snow and water skiing, exercising and spending time surrounded by the wonderful friends and family that I have been blessed with. Nicola Parker TMFA. I have been in the floral industry 13 years and 2012 was the best year yet. I was honored to be able to serve on the TSFA Education committee for the third year where I was able to volunteer for many High School testing. This was my first year as Employee Director for Allied Florist of Houston, competed and won the Houston Cup Competition in 2012 and was privileged to be able to Chair the 2013 Competition which was a huge success. I won the TSFA Cup Competition in 2012. I am so excited to be asked to present a growers program for this year’s 99th annual TSFA Convention and I have plans to participate in the Memorial Day Florist program and compete in the Mid America Competition in Hot Springs, Arkansas in August 2013. I have worked hard educating myself and volunteering to help educate others because without the aid of TSFA and Allied Florist of Houston I would have never been able to achieve the things I have. I truly believe in giving my all to every responsibility I choose to take on and I will work just as hard as Retail Director . Second Vice President Susan Weatherford began her floral career in 1982, writing monthly marketing articles for WF&FSA. Prior to that, she was a Gas Coordinator for Conoco. Susan started working at Southern Floral Company in 1983 as an Administrative Coordinator and was promoted to Sales Manager in 2006. Susan manages the Houston sales team, and coordinates promotions and events for all three Southern Floral Company locations. She also is the “go to” person for several large customers. Rey Rodriguez, AAF CFD TMFA. Rey has been a member of TSFA since 1998, he has competed in the Texas Cup Competition for 9 years, is proud to say he was ranked in the top 5 for 7 years. He has served on the Education Committee for 5 yrs, and serves on the Bloomin Texan Committee. Rey is currently seeking his AIFD designation. Rey Rodriguez AAF CFD TMFA is the owner of A Rey of Flowers in Pleasanton and Floresville. Rey served as Stage Manager for the 2012 TSFA Convention and is the 2013 Design Symposium Chair in Mesquite. Grower Director Jimmy Klepac, President of Klepac Greenhouses, has been involved with TSFA since 1996. In that time he has served on many different committees and has been on the Board of Directors for several terms. TSFA has done a fine job in their efforts to maintain and foster TSFA’s relationship with the Texas Department of Agriculture. As government budgets continue to shrink, it is imperative that TSFA continues to strengthen our alliances to help promote TSFA to the consumer. This program was presented by Neville MacKay CAFA PFCI WFC of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada and sponsored by Pikes Peak, Texas. During his program, Neville provided amazing tips and tricks that all florists should know. Here are a few things to think about, ponder and hopefully pay attention to: v Allow flowers to do what they want to as much as possible! The more we “force” flowers to do something rather than “encourage” them, they will fight back and the arrangement will not show as well as it could. v There is ALWAYS a Plan B! We have beautiful flowers that are available in a multitude of colors so remember that the next time your ranunculus comes in crappy! (Try cutting off the top of a rose to make a “designer” ranunculus…It’ll never be seen on a galloping horse!) v As florists, we often are so wound up in the “gotta get it dones!” that we don’t stop and appreciate the beauty that we get to work with every day! STOP AND ENJOY THOSE BEAUTIFUL FLOWERS! RIGHT NOW! (Even if it’s just for a few seconds!) v Take a flower home! I hear SO many florists who never take a flower home! That, my petals, is just wrong! I get my staff to take a flower (or more!) home on a regular basis; this is good for them, and also lets them see the beauty they share with their clients. It’s also a good way for those who may not be familiar with a certain flower to see how it performs. v Flowers are food for the soul, and really do make a difference in a person’s life. v Support floral organizations! Your State Association is an EXCELLENT resource for information, inspiration and innovation! (I was so very impressed with all I heard about it!) v GO TO DESIGN SHOWS! Wow, people! It’s that simple! If you think you’re too good, or just can’t be bothered, well shame on you! We ALL can learn from a show, and often times we get strength to carry on from a show, get ideas we didn’t know, and can hear stories (sometimes horror!) from other shops so we know we aren’t the only ones suffering! v We sell EMOTION in our businesses! Whether hatched, matched or dispatched, we offer beauty, love, sympathy, friendship to all those involved from the giving to the receiving. v We don’t need a reason to have flowers! From the womb to the tomb, flowers are there to be enjoyed by everyone, regardless of who they are! v Use the word, “upgrade” as it denotes a value for additional material or labor. v Never apologize for charging for flowers! They cost what they cost and are worth every penny! v Smile and if need be, up the dosage! We are in one of the most beautiful industries in the world, but sometimes we just have to remind ourselves now and then!” The Bloomin’ Texan c May 2013 / 13 B A SPECIALIZING IN Y FLORAL EXCELLENCE SHERIT MONTGOMERY O WHITE AAF • TMFA W 610 PARK STREET N A Y T O W N Support Your Advertisers!
