SPLAT provides students with the fantastic
opportunity of gaining a greater insight into History
of Art. SPLAT is centered around presentations
given by students and outside speakers on topics
ranging from a student’s favourite artist to how
art as a subject translates into a career. This
society is an excellent opportunity for students in
Year 11 and above who study or are planning to
study History of Art, but equally for younger girls
who love art!
Art is one of the most powerful mediums of
expression and of gaining a different perspective
of the world. It is important that we learn the
values and power of this medium by gaining
knowledge about a whole spectrum of artists.

In the club we try to pick a play that most people
are interested in seeing. Last year we saw a wide
range of plays. These included Ibsen’s ‘A Doll’s
House’, the National’s ‘A Taste of Honey’ and
‘From Morning To Midnight’ (a weird German
realism play) and Punchdrunk’s ‘A Drowned Man’
(a promenade immersive theatre piece in a multistory warehouse). The evenings out are very
enjoyable and the day after we meet at break to
share thoughts on the performance. You do not
need to sign-up in advance; if the chosen play
intrigues you, then just ask a rep for a form!

DRAMA
The School Production
Open to all year groups, the school production is our biggest event on the Drama
Department calendar. Each year we alternate between a play and a musical. Parts are given
to reliable girls who are successful in the audition process. There is no audition process for
crew roles, and girls can join Tech Club if they want to be a part of the stage crew. The
school production is usually performed in February, before half term.
The Senior Production
Open to years 10 to U6, this production is student led. Our Theatre Captains direct the
play, and co-produce it together with our Tech Captains. Entry to the cast is through an
audition process. Directors are encouraged to produce plays involving a large cast, to
provide plenty of opportunities for large numbers of girls to be involved. There is no
audition process for crew roles, and girls can join Tech Club if they want to be a part of the
stage crew. The production is usually performed in November.
The Lower School Production
Girls in years 8 and 9 may opt to take part in the Lower School Production, directed by
Miss Tricker (Speech and Drama). Auditions for the Lower School Production take place at
the beginning of the autumn term. Rehearsals take place every Friday after school, and the
performances are in the Summer Term.
The Year 7 Christmas Play
Although this is not technically an extra-curricular event, it is worth making a note of as
it involves every girl in year 7. Performed in December to the local elderly citizens at our
annual Christmas Tea Party, this production has become a Godolphin tradition.
Tech Club
Open to girls in years 9-U6,Tech Club is a fun Friday afternoon club run by our Performing
Arts Technician, James, and our Tech Captains. Tech Club girls learn how to run the Bishop
Centre, with focus on lighting, sound, stage management, set/prop design, and costume
design. Club members become the crew on all of our productions. If you are interested in
joining, please turn up to the Bishop Centre after school and speak to James and the Tech
Captains (Ali Flanagan & Syrie Gwyn Palmer).
GLTV
GLTV is run by Ms Adams, and involves creating a monthly TV news bulletin to broadcast
to the school community. GLTV crew members will be responsible for filming various
events across the school calendar, including sport, lectures, house events, year group day
visits, overseas visits, and all other activities that take place within the school community.
The GLTV crew will be responsible for all filming, editing, presenting (news reading) and
reporting, and will produce the 3 minute bulletin once a month. Editing and news-reading/
presenting will be completed after school on a Friday in the recording studio. All other
filming will be at various times, depending on the event.
34
35
SPEECH & DRAMA
SPEECH & DRAMA is a particular popular extra-curricular choice
for almost half of the girls in the School. Lessons develop solo
acting, poetry recitation and public speaking skills. These lessons
are timetabled for groups of 8-10 girls in year 7 and generally take
place either before or after school.
From year 10 upwards Speech and Drama lessons are timetabled
in private study lessons, where possible, and the group size reduces
to between 6 and 8 students.
As well as the general confidence that Speech and Drama can
bring to a student’s oratory skills it is also possible to take Trinity
Guildhall examinations, starting with Grade 3 level work and
progressing year by year to Grade 8. Whilst examination entry is
not compulsory it is encouraged.
36
VOLUNTARY WORK
It is important to make a difference and to give something back to our community,
both locally and beyond. Many girls find their voluntary work among the most
rewarding and satisfying things they do while at school. You will find that you get
a great deal out of the work that you do through meeting and working with new
and different people of all ages and with a range of needs. You can apply for a
voluntary placement at the end of the Autumn Term in Year 10.
We also hope that everyone in the sixth form will find some time to take part in
voluntary work or some form of community service. You may need to do this as
part of your Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme or your IB CAS, but we hope
that you will do it because you want to, recognising that this may well be one of
the most rewarding aspects of your sixth form career.
We have lots of exciting opportunities to get involved in but we are also keen
that you should take initiative and form your own projects. If you do so, or
become involved in any community or voluntary work in England or abroad,
please let us know!
Enjoy your placement, make a difference to people’s lives – and report back.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION
PE is seen as a vital part of the girls’ overall education
at Godolphin and allows the girls time to rejuvenate
their minds, helping to promote a positive attitude
towards studying whilst working on both individual and
team skills. Girls learn to deal with both success and
failure, something which is ever present in their lives,
as well as taking risks whilst challenging themselves.
All these attributes will help them both on and off the
sports field.
With this in mind the department offers a wide variety
of sports and clubs both within the curricular and extra
curricular programmes. Our main sports are hockey and
netball in the winter along with tennis, rounders, cricket
and athletics in the summer.
SQUADS
We have squads in hockey, netball, gymnastics, basketball,
rounders, cricket, athletics and tennis. Girls try out at the
beginning of the season for a squad and places are earned
on practical performance as well as attitude to learning and a
girl’s commitment to practices and fixtures. Squads are never
fixed and girls are often asked to join during the course of
the year as their skills develop; equally girls may be asked to
leave if their commitment, attitude or performance drops.
We have an inclusive approach towards sport and girls who
do not make the squad can still attend clubs which run
alongside the squads’ lunch time practice.
Netball
Netball is an increasingly popular sport at Godolphin and
Latymer School. The majority of girls play it throughout the
years, it’s enjoyable but competitive and challenging.
With just seven players on each side, the game requires
good team working skills and the ability to think well under
pressure. Quick passing and footwork make it one of the
fastest moving games the girls enjoy and skills, such as handeye coordination, spatial awareness and decision making.
Fully inclusive and, above all fun, netball is enjoyed by all ages
and abilities.Training is available before school and lunch times
and regular fixtures, tournaments are played after school.
38
As with all sports, competition is encouraged and we field
the following teams in each age group;
• U12 ABCDEFGH Club
• U13 ABCDEF Club
• U14 ABCD
• U15 ABCD
• U16 ABC
• U18 1VII 2VII 3VII
This spurs each and every girl to work hard to improve her
performance and rewards them with a team place even if
they are not elite players. It also helps everyone understand
the value of determination and practice by clearly outlining a
pathway for progression.
Each year the school takes part in numerous local and regional
competitions, showing great flair, talent and sportsmanship. It
also underpins our commitment to providing enjoyable and
inclusive sport for all.
Hockey
Hockey is often a new sport to some girls but the
enthusiasm to try the unknown is overwhelming. The squad
is not selected as early as others in order to give those who
have never played before a chance to experience hockey
and develop their skills. When the squad is selected we have
A-D teams for the U12/13 squads and A/B for all other
year groups. By doing this we allow as many girls as possible
to play.
A joint netball and hockey sports tour runs each year,
alternating between the lower school and seniors. The
U13/14 squads have the opportunity to go to Northern
Ireland for five days with the senior tour being slightly further
afield to South Africa or Barbados.
Gymnastics
The gym squad is an invitational group for students from
all year groups. The group works towards external school
competitions and internal displays in floor and vault and
acrobatic disciplines. Gymnasts are encouraged to work
together to develop their skills and produce spectacular
performances at the end of the spring term.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Basketball
There is a junior and senior squad which comprises of Years
7-9 and then Year 10 and above. Girls attend training once a
week and work at game play as well as individual skills. We
are part of a league which plays fixtures over the autumn and
spring terms.
Rounders
Rounders squads look at girls’ ability to both bat and field.
They need to demonstrate tactical understanding in order to
limit a batter’s scoring opportunities as well as where to hit
the ball in order to gain the best chance to score a rounder.
There are four teams in U12-14 and two in the U15.
Athletics
The athletics squad is gaining in strength with many girls
participating outside of school. Girls will practise a variety of
events and often get the chance to represent the school both
in the winter months through borough indoor events and
cross country, as well as in the summer. Athletics is very much
a team event as often it is the team that progresses through,
although girls can also be selected for borough or regional
teams on an individual basis.
Tennis
Tennis is a popular summer squad and girls benefit from
external coaches who work alongside the PE department.
Squads will be made up of approximately 20 girls. Squad
members are expected to participate in either or both the
schools’ singles and doubles competitions during the second
part of the summer term.
Cricket
The cricket squad is made up of girls who attend the weekly
extra curricular club. They will enter the national indoor
competition during the winter months as well as the newly
formed U13 and U15 H&F borough summer league.

As PE and sport are an integral part of the school day, it
is important to offer a wide variety of activities in order
to try and appeal to girls of all ages. The hope is that girls
will experience a sporting activity which will stay with them
into adulthood.
With this in mind we offer the following activities either at
lunch time or after school during the course of the year.
Pilates
The aim of Pilates is to learn how to move correctly and
efficiently. Sitting at a desk pulls muscles and joints out of
alignment which, in class, are rebalanced and strengthened.
The focus is on building core strength which improves posture
and prevents injury; the class environment and structure also
helping to reduce stress. The habits formed in teenage years
are those that continue through to adulthood, and therefore,
practicing correct movement patterns at this age is highly
beneficial.
Pilates takes place in school on Mondays 4.15-5.15pm.
Kickboxing
The kickboxing classes allow the girls to be involved in martial
arts in a fun and safe environment. Besides developing boxing
skills, important self-confidence and super fitness, the upbeat
and interactive class encourages girls to work as a team and
feel empowered.
Physically – Their cardiovascular fitness and strength will
increase immensely, as well as coordination, reaction time and
balance.
Mentally – Focus, concentration and determination. The
classes are structured and provide a situation for working
together and respect for one another.
Emotional – Improvement in confidence, self-esteem.
Physiologically – Feel Good Factor – Endorphins are released
during the workout and results in mood elevation and a sense
of calm afterwards.
Kickboxing takes place in school on Mondays 4.15-5.15pm
for beginners and 5.15-6.15pm for advanced.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Squash
Squash is run on a 10 week (termly) cycle so more girls
can experience it as places are limited to 12. Initially only
open to Yr 8 and above but Yr 7 are welcome to join from
Christmas onwards (if space is available). A fun and happy
environment is created where the fundamentals of squash
are taught through individual skills and match play by the
head coach at Queens.
Squash takes place at The Queens Tennis Club, Barons
Court on Mondays from 4.30-5.30pm.
Dance
In dance girls work on stamina, strength and flexibility.
These skills are then incorporated into a variety of dance
styles to ensure the students get training in all aspects
of dance.
Dance takes place in school on Tuesdays 4.15-5.15pm
for beginners and 5.15-6.15pm for advanced and Fridays
3.15-4.15pm for all abilities.
Yoga
Yoga classes have run for over 14 years and combine the
mind, body and spirit whilst focusing on breath control in
order to ensure you can stretch further, relax in a position
and increase your flexibility.
Yoga takes place in school on Tuesdays 4.15-5.15pm
until the end of the Easter term.
Cricket
Godolphin is the top girls’ school in London for cricket at
a time when cricket is the fastest growing sport for girls
in the country. Teams are selected from the cricket club
to represent the School at U12, U13 and U15 age-groups
and have won competitions nationally. Mark and Buddy
Mason are top MCC coaches from the Lords Cricket
Academy and are the most experienced schools’ coaches
in London.
Cricket takes place in school on Wednesday lunch times
from 1.15-2pm.

Karate
A traditional style, Shito-Ryu Karate is taught and the club has
been running for over 10 years with the same Chief Instructor of
the United English Karate Federation Richard Bolton (5th Dan).
Emphasis is placed on safe light movements to suit all body types.
The school has produced several black belts and we have several
up and coming brown belts at the moment who should achieve
their black belts by the time they leave the school. All abilities are
welcome as well as students from other styles who may have
done karate before.
Lots of the girls use karate as credit for their D of E award.
Karate takes place in school on Wednesdays from 4.15-5.15pm
for beginners and 5.15-6.15pm for advanced.
Fencing
Fencing club introduces girls to the discipline and challenge of
sword sports. Girls mainly train with the epee, the weapon based
on a duelling sword, and later cover the basics of sabre, based
on the cavalry sword. Training includes bladework and footwork
drills along with an introducing to fighting (using electrical scoring
equipment) and an understanding of the etiquette of the sale.
The club aims to give the girls an introduction to this complex
sport with a view to igniting a life-long interest and enthusiasm.
Football
This is a very popular club with girls of all age groups. We look at
basic and more advanced skills as well as tactical game play over
a variety of sizes. We play some fixtures against other schools as
well as train every Friday after school from 3.30-4.30pm.
Tennis
External coaches from Henry Lamb Tennis take the sessions.
Their coaches are enthusiastic and professional who work hard
to build skills and inspire a passion for the game. Tennis is viewed
as more than just a sport, it’s a life skill. All ages will get something
out of our coaching, whether it’s an improvement in technique
or the confidence that comes from learning something new.
Coaching sessions run at lunch times throughout the summer
term and sign up letters will be available in the spring term.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Rock climbing
Approximately 15-20 girls from any year group, are
escorted by two members of staff to the Westway
Climbing Centre, London’s premier indoor climbing venue.
Girls are taught by qualified instructors in small groups,
depending on their level of expertise and experience.
Climbers range from absolute beginners learning the
ropes (!), through to seasoned lead climbers. At the end of
the hour and a half climbing session there is always some
time for bouldering fun (climbing without ropes, over a
crash mat) and stretching to warm down.
There is often the opportunity to go on an outdoor
adventurous visit in the summer term where rock climbing
will be one of the activities you will participate in.
Rock climbing runs from 4.00-5.30pm usually on a Friday
(although day may vary) in the summer term only.
Rowing
Rowing is a popular sport, with over 50 girls rowing
competitively over a variety of year groups. More than 2/3
of Year 9 girls try out for a place in the J14 squad, and there
are also squads for J15, J16 and J18 rowers. Training on the
water takes part at Putney, from KCS Wimbledon’s Boat
House. The Boat Club competes at many local, regional
and national races, with highlights being the Schools’ Head
of the River and the National Schools’ Regatta.
Rowing takes place all year round on various days after
school and Saturdays.
Tennis Coaching
During the summer term the girls have the opportunity to
have small group coaching sessions with the coaches from
Henry Lamb Tennis. They work on developing individual
skills as well as game play.
