[email protected] Carrie Ritchie, President Newsletter hosted by Dundee Internet Mailing List Services: Marketing for local businesses http://mailing-list-services.com/services/index.htm NEWSLETTER SPONSORED BY DUNDEE INTERNET, EDWARD JONES , DENNIS O’HARE, REALTOR REAL ESTATE ONE & JONES INSURANCE Milan Area Chamber Member of The Month October 2016 Fire Prevention Month Milan Area Fire Department The Milan Area Fire Department just finished a very successful Fire Prevention Open House on Monday, October 10th. Children and adults alike, are always intrigued by the massive red trucks, that carry our firefighters to help in time of need & the excitement of seeing the University of Michigan Survival Flight Helicopter land for the event. In 1887 the Milan Area Fire Department began serving the Milan community with emergency response services. That is 129 years of service, by those willing to put their lives on the line. They serve more than just the City of Milan proper; they also cover Milan, London and York Townships; a coverage area of 77.6 square miles. They currently have 29 paid on-call firefighters who operate out of the station located at 45 Wabash St, downtown Milan. The department has 3 engines, 1 heavy rescue, 1 medical rescue, 1 tanker, 1 brush truck, and 1 utility working for you. From wildfires burning along the corridor of US 23 in late July of this year, assisting other departments in putting out a barn fire fueled by 30,000 bales of hay, assisting with accidents on the highway, or in the city, operating the jaws of life to extract a frantic or unconscious victim, their commitment runs deep. This group of firefighters not only are seen on emergency runs, but at our Milan Area School Football games cheering the players on. The firefighters and football team have had a long relationship of comradely. Because our firefighters care, they can help you better if you help yourself by signing up for the free 911 service. 1. Ritchie With October being the month that draws attention to Fire Prevention nationally, the Milan Area Chamber ishonoring one of its many heroes. It just seemed fitting that as a Chamber, we pay tribute to our President's husband, Martin K. Ritchie. Ritchie is practically a household name in the City of Milan. This man of integrity has many titles and names. Married to our Chamber President, Carrie, for 17 years, one of his favorite titles, is that of being called "dad." The couple has 3 children, Kyle, Haylie and Joey and a daughter-in-law, Liz. Many friends and acquaintances call him Marty, and ever-so often for fun, he makes people guess where Marto is hanging out! In this article we pay tribute to the man who wears two very important City Titles: Assistant Fire Chief of Milan Area Fire Department, as well as The Fire Marshal. Along with his Firefighter duties, he also has training and works as an EMT and has a State Certified Fire Inspectors Certificate. Marty has been serving citizens with fire service for 28 years, working with the Milan Fire Department, along with 9 years of service at Pittsfield Township. He is also a Certified Instructor through American Heart and he teaches basic life support and CPR; conducting classes on a monthly basis. Off duty, Martin is actively involved with the community in many areas. He is Vice President of the Milan Youth League. He puts in numerous hours of helping several organizations throughout the community through his volunteerism spirit. Marty is a Commercial Instructor and Hot Air Balloon Pilot in which he has donated numerous flights to many charitable organizations. His love of people and community is evident and his example has paid off, as he is very proud that his oldest son Kyle serves with him on the Milan Area Fire Department. Marty and Carrie very much enjoy all-season sports, family and friend time at their cabin and especially attending the various school sporting events that Haylie and Joey are involved with. On behalf of the Milan Area Chamber of Commerce thank you Martin K. Ritchie for your many contributions to our community, through the Department and other acts of service. CONGRATULATIONS HURON VALLEY AMBULANCE 35 YEARS OF SERVICE The Milan Area Chamber of Commerce congratulates our Members and Friends at Huron Valley Ambulance (HVA) on 35 years of serving those in need. Established in 1981 by five hospitals in Washtenaw County. They saw a need of this type of non profit organization, following the failure of several commercial ambulance services. A 2 million dollar investment by the hospitals purchasing new vehicles, equipment and the facilities needed to get the service up and running. After a staff with new leadership was hired the advanced life support (paramedic) service started in early 1982. From its birthing to present, the organization provides paramedic emergency and non emergency ambulance services for more than 1 million residents in all or part of eight Michigan counties. In 1984 volunteer community leaders began to serve on the HVA Board of Trustees and the company continued to improve service delivery. In 1985, with success in the goal of stabilizing emergency medical services for county residents, the hospitals turned HVA over to the community, as a free-standing nonprofit, charitable 501(c)(3) organization. The hospitals have continued to play a part in the governance and success of this great organization. Huron Valley Ambulance extended its services in 1986, establishing an ambulance station in the City of Belleville in Wayne County. Additional stations were added in Plymouth (1989), South Lyon (1990), Tecumseh (1995), Wixom (2003), Milford (2006-2013) and Huron Township (2015). HVA also began a series of partnerships with other hospitals in 1986 to serve Jackson, Lenawee and Calhoun counties, as well as in Monroe County in 2005. Another HVA partnership - Alliance Mobile Health - began serving southeast Oakland County in 2000. Emergent Health Partners was created in 2012 by the Board of Trustees, after studying the changes and trends in national health care took place. Emergent Health owns and operates (either fully or in partnership with other entities) HVA along with five other ambulance services. It employees some 310 people with 230 Paramedics, owns 65 ambulances , has a $25 million Annual operating budget, and serves some 498,431 populate within 32 municipalities! In 2015 they responded to 89,250 calls and transported 66,959 patients. “The Mission of Huron Valley Ambulance is to provide accessible, high quality pre-hospital health care services to the people and organizations we serve in southeast Michigan.” Saturday, October 15th they are holding a public celebration of 35 years, at 1200 State Circle Dr. Ann Arbor from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Free food and games, community guests, music and more! They request guests to bring a non-perishable food item to donate to Food Gatherers. Help end hunger in Washtenaw County. Aid in Milan, also referred to as AIM, is a non-profit corporation established in 1976, with Executive Director Ruth Garrison at the helm. The organization was to develop and implement community action projects, meeting human needs in the Milan Area School District. This year, the service area was expanded to the entire 48160 zip code area. This 501(c)(3) human service agency provides an emergency food pantry that serves about 200 low-income people each month. AIM partners with Milan Seniors for Healthy Living to help with the monthly distribution of some 800 Home-Delivered Meals to our homebound seniors. Since 1976, AIM has hosted an Activity Group for adults with special needs. The Group meets weekly for social interaction and entertainment, and also goes on community outings. This organization that we feel has the heart of Milan, helps support rent and utility crisis intervention with some $11,000 in assistance annually. Job loss and family crisis can come to anyone's door, so this organization also helps people with job search assistance. AIM promotes the well-being of these recipients, while preserving respect and personal dignity. Every school year right before the first semester begins, the volunteers at Aid in Milan assemble back packs and needed school supplies for delivery. At Christmas time, generous donations from the Milan community allow AIM to host Adopt-a-Family and Toys For Tots, which helps their clients provide gifts for their families. Other seasonal projects include winter coat distribution, which is sponsored by the Knights of Columbus, and holiday food assistance. How does a great organization like this stay up with the high demand...sources include the Greater Milan Area Community Foundation, Food Gatherers, United Way of Washtenaw County, Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation, local churches, businesses, clubs and organizations, as well as generous community members and the volunteer staff cement the foundation of AIM. Ruth Garrison served as Executive Director until 2000, followed by Elaine Cousino, Nina Pemberton, and Michelle Pemberton. In 2014, the Board hired Amy Doyle, the current director, who has continued to lead the organization without interruption. The Board has had several extremely talented Business leaders serve as their President over the years, but, like the community, mourned at the deaths in December 2013 of longtime Director Nina Pemberton, and in December 2015 of President David Hoskins. Dennis O'Hare is the current Board President, leading AIM through its current phase of growth. Sunday, October 16th, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., the public is invited to the Aid in Milan 40th Year Anniversary Celebration at 89 W. Main St., Milan. Cake, cider and donuts will be served. If you would like to volunteer or donate in any way, please contact Amy at 734.439.8420. http://www.aidinmilan.org/ Follow them on Face Book Milan Area Chamber Soldier of the Month October 2016 Sergeant Anthony Pegouskie Milan Resident and Post 268 Commander of the Milan American Legion, Anthony Pegouskie came to Milan from Sgt. Pegouskie in Africa Richard Cosme & Anthony Carleton when he was in the 8th grade. In 2007, one year after graduating from Milan High School, he joined the Marine Corps Reserve. Nine years later, Anthony is still in the Reserve. In 2008 during Operation Iraqi Freedom, he was deployed to that area of the world, landing in Anbar Providence, where he was part of a mobile assault platoon as a Vehicle Dismount. That year he conducted many missions from counter insurgency to convoy security operations. Among his Medals are the Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, National Defense, Outstanding Volunteer Service and Global War on Terror Medals. When asked if his experience in the military was a positive one, Anthony responded, "My experience with the military has had its ups and downs, but has been more positive than negative. My leadership skills learned in the military have greatly assisted me in the civilian work force and within the community." When not busy with the Reserves as part of the Weapons Company 1st Battalion 24th Marines out of Perrysburg, Ohio, Anthony works as a Health Technician at the VA Hospital in Ann Arbor, where he is able to fulfill his passion in helping fellow Veterans, providing customer service to those patients. Anthony & his wife At Marine Corp Birthday Ball 2013 This busy man who enjoys woodworking, target shooting, hunting, golf and billiards in his spare time, is kept busy with training across the country. At times he has even left the U.S. as a training instructor. In 2012 he went to Africa as a Mortarman Instructor, teaching the African Military personal how to operate their weapons and military tactics. "Young people can always take something positive away from the military, whether it be a trade learned from their job; they learn from their service, or just from the organizational skills that are instilled in them through basic training," Sgt. Pegouskie said. "All in all, it gives young people a sense of direction to utilize while transitioning back to the civilian lifestyle." It makes him proud to serve as an Honor Guard with the Legion, having marched in several events in Milan. As Post Commander, his desire is to have the manpower and the volunteers it takes to enable the Legion to be more involved in the community. Anthony encourages all Veterans young or old to consider Legion membership. The post has events all year long that they conduct. The Legion meets the 3rd Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. Membership dues is $45 per year. He married his wife Chante in 2014. She was faithful to keeping him in letters during his basic training at Paris Island, and while deployed overseas. Anthony was influenced by the experience of sitting next to his friend, the late Richard Cosme during the 8th grade when the twin towers were attacked. This inspired the writer of this article, to think of the impact that day had on such fine young men, that their hearts led them to serve their country. Richard and Anthony served together in the same unit in Iraq. On behalf of the Milan Area Chamber of Commerce, we thank Sgt. Pegouskie for his faithful and BEGIN THINKING NOW WHO YOU WILL NOMINATE!
