Surface-supplied diving
Safety and regulations
14
The commercial diving discipline is subject to huge
constraints and risks, caused by many different factors,
such as poor visibility and illumination, confined spaces,
sea states, temperature differences, currents, underwater
noise, decompression sickness and marine life, for example.
Therefore it is governed by an abundance of safety rules
and regulations from governmental institutions, business
associations and classification societies. Technical and
operational guidelines are founded on the basis of the
approved code of practices as developed for work in the UK
and Norwegian sector of the North Sea and Atlantic. They give
strict directions on the design and usage of diving equipment
for offshore.
Tightening and increasingly stringent regulations have
consequences for all parties involved in the surface-supplied
diving industry. As a reliable supplier of diving solutions,
IHC Hytech is well aware of how its customers have to
comply with legislation. Due to its vast experience in this
field, IHC Hytech has become an authority on this area of
the subsea business and can advise on the best and safest
solutions to meet specific requirements. It is also actively
involved in the development of regulations.
Wet bell handling system
IHC Hytech understands that its customers don’t want to
spend too much time on paperwork. Its equipment and
systems are provided with the right certificates ex works. This
means that a faster deployment of diving systems is possible,
which therefore reduces costs for customers.
Internationalisation
Development in deep and ultra-deep water is booming,
most notably in Brazil, West Africa and South East Asia. The
decommissioning market is also developing in the north west
of Europe and the Gulf of Mexico, requiring new solutions. Next
door, the North Sea has among the worst encountered diving
conditions. It is evident that more contractors worldwide are
turning to IHC Hytech for the best diving solutions.
IHC Hytech is formed by a group of people with a wealth of
experience in every area of commercial diving and presents a
new perspective on many aspects in this developing field. The
fact that the Dutch and Belgian navies have equipped their
multimillion-euro mine sweepers with custom-made, nonmagnetic IHC Hytech decompression units is testimony to
the high quality of the equipment. Several salvage companies
and diving contractors around the world also use IHC Hytech
hardware. The company’s strapline – “we keep you breathing”
– underlines the focus of IHC Hytech.

Interior of a decompression chamber
Inside DART
DART and ATEL
IHC Hytech is the designer of a small lightweight decompression
chamber – the DART (Diver Attendant Recompression
Transportable). This type of transportable decompression
chamber is large enough to accommodate two people (one
patient and one attendant). Due to its special shape and size,
the DART is spacious enough to allow extended transportation
or treatment times if necessary.
Decompression chambers
The decompression chambers built by IHC Hytech are
considered to be market leading and suitable for any
application. They are the result of divers working together
with skilled design teams, mixing seasoned experience with
fresh technological perspectives. The company believes that
decompression chambers should be easy to operate to avoid
possible errors or losing precious time. That’s why high-quality
components are used to prevent unnecessary maintenance.
This increases the durability of the decompression chamber.
IHC Hytech manufactures decompression chambers in various
types of materials and configurations: aluminium, steel,
duplex stainless steel, stationary, mobile or transportable. IHC
Hytech delivers standard tanks, but is by no means limited
to one model. All decompression chambers can be custommade to fit their applications precisely. Safety and reliability
are important features and IHC Hytech is able to build
decompression chambers according to any standard: Lloyd’s
Register, ABS, GL, DNV, IMCA, and so on.
Decompression chambers inside a container
Compact and lightweight, the DART is ideal for transferring
divers under pressure to a hyperbaric medical facility. It is
fitted with a rotating STANAG male flange, which allows it to
ATEL stands for Attachable Transportable Entrance Lock. This
is an additional chamber compartment, which can be used
in combination with the DART, allowing attendant entry to
the DART. The ATEL is provided with a special STANAG female
flange, which makes it possible to link the ATEL to the DART,
creating a two-compartment chamber.
The interior and exterior of the chambers are covered with a
special coating. Working pressures usually range from 50, 70
or 100 metres of seawater (msw) for surface-supplied diving
activities for air and mixed gas operations. Chambers for selfpropelled hyperbaric lifeboats with working pressures of up
to 400msw can, however, also be provided for saturation
diving operations.
For integration in existing systems, the chambers can be
supplied with connection flanges to fit any bell or auxiliary
chamber. The support skid can be used to integrate the
breathing gas cylinders required to provide maximum
operational independence. The pressure hull has a number
of spare penetrators that allow additional systems to be
installed. A large-size medical lock is a standard feature. View
ports allow observation of both compartments.
A standard decompression chamber comes with two
compartments: the main chamber and an entrance lock.
The chamber is skid-mounted and has large lifting lugs for
increased mobility. The tank will go wherever the diving
operation is located.
O2 Make up mounted outside the dart
O2 make-up valve
Divers’ bodies use oxygen for their metabolism. This oxygen
used by the occupants must be replaced. If the oxygen level in
the chamber becomes too low, the operator can add oxygen
to the atmosphere using the O2 make-up valve.

be connected to a large number of hyperbaric facilities. It is
also possible to use adaption flanges to connect the DART to
hyperbaric facilities using other connection flanges. The DART
transportable decompression chamber can be installed in an
ISO standard container.
Opening this valve will add oxygen to the chamber atmosphere.
The oxygen will be brought into the chamber close to the air
outlet of the CO2 scrubber. The air flow through the scrubber
will ensure the added oxygen mixes quickly with the chamber
atmosphere.

Heaters and scrubbers
In a small, enclosed tank it’s important to maintain the
right environmental conditions. IHC Hytech designs and
manufactures its own heaters and scrubbers. The benefits of
this equipment include:
• non-corrosive materials
• high efficiency
• low voltage DC
• RPM control
• encapsulated motor.
Heaters
The single and double heat exchangers are designed to
control the temperature in a deck decompression chamber.
The single heat exchanger can be used either for heating or
cooling the chamber atmosphere. The combi unit (double
heat exchanger) consists of a heating and a cooling exchanger,
and can be used for both simultaneously.
Scrubbers
The CO2 scrubber unit is designed to remove CO2 from the
atmosphere in a diving system or decompression chamber.
The scrubber unit consists of a fan that pulls air through a
canister filled with CO2 adsorbent, such as Sodasorb or soda
lime. The canister is provided with an internal fine mesh of
0.3mm. This prevents off-dusting of the soda lime.
14 IHC Hytech

SLT60
A smaller scrubber unit is also available. It is especially
suitable for use inside smaller hyperbaric/decompression
chambers where space is limited, such as a DART. The unit
has a clamp that holds two CO2 adsorbent canisters. It has
a built-in electric fan. In case of electric failure, it is possible
to connect a simple medical breathing mask and use the
scrubber as a lung-powered unit.
IHC Hytech manufactures various kinds of mounted and
portable control panels for several applications. By listening
to feedback from experienced colleagues and customers,
IHC Hytech designs the panels so that they are easy to operate.
It can provide customised solutions, such as detached control
panels, or control panels at the end or on the side of a
decompression chamber.
The panel is mounted inside a rugged plastic container and
contains a communicator, triple timer and independent HP
and LP supplies. The downstream pressure is adjustable and
the system is suitable for air, nitrox, oxygen and trimix. Three
separate digital oxygen meters are optional to analyse the
breathing gas supply of the three divers.
The heater and scrubber motor units are completely casted.
Environmental conditions, such as oxygen level, humidity or
pressure, will not affect the motor at all. The motor is very
dependable because of its brushless design. The motor speed
configuration can be either fixed or controllable.
Dive control container
The SLT60 is a surface-supplied diving system designed to
simultaneously support two divers conducting hard work
to a depth of 60 msw, in order to carry out all manner of
underwater tasks, including conducting surveys, maintenance,
defect rectification, cutting and welding etc.
Decontamination canister
IHC Hytech’s decontamination canister removes pollution
from a breathing gas in an enclosed environment other than
CO2 when connected with the IHC Hytech scrubber fan unit.
The decontamination scrubber canister contains a special
blend of carbon molecular sieves and a catalyst, and is stored
in an airtight container. Once the container is opened and
the canister is exposed to the environment, it starts to work.
The special filling mixture of the canister removes all kind of
contamination caused by humans in an enclosed environment
due to breathing, vomit, urine, faeces and sweat.
Separate dive control containers, for diver handling systems
for example, are equipped with the same easy-to-operate
control panels. Every diver has his own colour. The IHC Hytech
dive control container is configured to house all the required
equipment and controls needed to run the dive operation. A
diver gas supply panel performs a number of tasks. It supplies
breathing gas to the divers, monitors the depth of the divers
and analyses the composition of the breathing gas. Using the
monitors, the operator can observe the activities of the divers
and equipment.
Portable diving panel
This complete system complies with IMCA guidelines and
is available as standard in a two- or three-diver version.
SLT60 light helmet diving system
The Surface Demand Diving System SLT 60 has been
manufactured in accordance with CE regulations, the German
standard DIN 58642 for hose-supplied diving apparatus,
as well as the 1993/2000 EN 250 HSE & NPD regulations
for diving equipment. It also complies fully with the new
European standard for Surface Demand Diving Equipment.
IHC Hytech is registered with the notified body, Germanischer
Lloyd, as the official manufacturer of the SLT60 light helmet
diving system.

AS4000 reducers
High-quality components
IHC Hytech manufactures and delivers a wide range of
high-quality components, which are designed to meet the
toughest standards in the industry. Examples include flow
fuses, reducers, analysers, manifolds, silencers, check valves,
tubing, and so on.
Reducers
The IHC Hytech line of reducers has been especially
engineered for applications that require lightweight,
corrosion-resistant, compact and reliable regulation in highpressure systems. Simplicity in design provides a very high
level of reliability. The reducer has only one moving part. It
has an aluminium bronze body, which has been chosen for its
corrosion resistance and great tensile strength. The reducer
is made to the specifications of the customer, to ensure it
exactly fits the application requirements. When used directly
on a HP air/gas bank, it is capable of extremely high flow rates
without freezing up. It is virtually maintenance free because
of the simple design. The reducer is fitted with a tracking
port. When this option is used, the reducer will automatically
adjust the ouput pressure relative to the pressure connected
to the tracking port.
Flow fuse
The IHC Hytech flow fuse can be included in a system in order
to protect an air/gas bank from running empty, for example
when a hose breaks. The flow fuse is set for a maximum flow
of 150m3/hr, at a working pressure of 30 bars (440 psi). In case
the maximum flow is exceeded, the fuse will close instantly.
If the pressure behind the fuse remains low, it won’t open
again. However, in some situations, for example when the
18 IHC Hytech
High pressure
distribution manifold
BIBS manifold with expansion
maximum flow is accidentally exceeded by incorrect use of a
vent valve, the system would be required to slowly build up
pressure again, using gas from the protected tank. Therefore,
the IHC Hytech flow fuse incorporates a small vent screw,
which can be set to leak. The time needed to rebuild pressure
in a particular system of course depends on its size, so this
must be set during a trial. The flow fuse can be mounted in
or outside the tank. It should be within 20 degrees from a
horizontal position. The fuse has been made from brass with
a PTFE coating.
Check valves
The IHC Hytech check valve responds to the need for large
threaded high and low pressure one-way valves. The check
valves are made to the user’s specification, although the
company usually stocks 1”NPT female connections. Largee
threads are available. The flow fuse can be used for high and
low pressure.
Manifolds
In its decompression chambers, diving panels, life-support
panels, hydraulic units, reducer systems and all other pressure
systems, IHC Hytech makes extensive use of manifolds. Any
connection fitting in a pressure system poses a potential
leakage risk. In the old days, for instance, diving panels were
constructed using countless fittings, connections, valves,
adapters and other plumbing. Leaks were a major problem.
A manifold is usually a solid bar of suitable material, which
has most valves and connections concentrated in it. Good use
of manifolds reduces up to 90% of fittings, and therefore the
leakage risk. A further advantage is that manifolds make the
diving panel or system compact and extremely strong. IHC
Hytech benefits from several years of experience in designing
and manufacturing manifolds.
BIBS manifolds
A special version is the BIBS (Built-In Breathing System)
manifold. This is designed to supply oxygen during
treatment in a decompression chamber. All manifolds will
be mounted inside the decompression chamber with a shutoff valve located direct on the vessel’s skin. This valve is
not an operational valve, but a shut-off valve to enable the
occupants to close the supply of oxygen. The hull penetration
plate is specially designed to supply and support the manifold
blocks. Quick connectors with a shut-off valve inside are
used to prevent uncontrolled oxygen flow. When the hose is
disconnected, the valve closes.
Silencers
IHC Hytech silencers provide a significant decrease in
noise level, both inside and outside of decompression and
hyperbaric chambers. The silencers do not obstruct airflow,
they only reduce noise by eliminating turbulence. This is a
huge advantage over sintered bronze filters that can corrode,
become obstructed, and eventually be blown to pieces by
air pressure. Another advantage of IHC Hytech silencers is
the possibility to direct airflow for mixing fresh air with the
chamber atmosphere sufficiently. The silencers can be used
both inside and outside the tank in the exhaust lines, and they
are available with a range of connections.
Tungum tubing
Tubing
Tungum alloy (aluminium-nickel-silicon-brass) tubing
combines an unusually high strength-to-weight ratio, with
ductility, excellent corrosion resistance, and first-class fatigue
properties. Highly resistant to seawater and its atmosphere,
Tungum resists both stress and crevice corrosion to offer
outstanding serviceability, even at intermittent duty in the
highly corrosive ‘splash’ zone offshore. Non-magnetic and
non-sparking properties make Tungum invaluable in piping
high-pressure gases, particularly oxygen where its thermal
conductivity/diffusivity characteristics virtually eliminate
the potential dangers present when lesser materials
are employed. When used in high-pressure hydraulic or
pneumatic circuits, these features, together with inherent
“clean bore” characteristics, combine to provide an affordable
and easily constructed, high-integrity system. This requires a
minimum amount of purging and minimal external protective
treatment.

Cygnus DIVE Mk2
Personal gear
Every diver needs adequate equipment. IHC Hytech can
deliver a wide range of personal gear for specific diving tasks.
This can vary from helmets and masks, to suits, harnesses,
knives and other accessories.
Suits and undersuits
A suit is an important garment to protect a diver from
underwater environments. These can vary, so different
versions are available, such as constant volume suits, dry
suits, hot water suits and suits made for heavy-duty work or
usage in contaminated waters. Using the right undersuit is
also essential. The undergarments supplied by IHC Hytech are
proven by years of field testing by the Norwegian Navy, the
British Antarctic Survey Dive Team, the French Marines and
the Danish Navy. They are designed using high-technology
fabrics and have been tested in real diving conditions from
the Arctic to the Antarctic. Matching boots, gloves and hoods
are also available.
Harnesses and jackets
Safety harnesses used to be complicated and time consuming
to put on. However, IHC Hytech harnesses have been
developed to reduce the time and complication involved
in putting on safety/recovery harnesses, bail-out bottle
harnesses and weight belts. The strong base material of the
harness distributes the load across the body.

Thickness gauge
IHC Hytech is an official supplier of Cygnus Instruments
underwater thickness gauges, including the Cygnus DIVE
Mk2. With its brightly coloured AMOLED display, the Cygnus
DIVE Mk2 provides easy viewing from all angles for the diver
and his camera, even in poor visibility. This wrist-mountable
ultrasonic thickness gauge has been designed for the
professional diver and can be worn on the forearm, providing
an invaluable free hand while performing thickness surveys
underwater.
Rated to a depth of 300 metres, it delivers accurate meter
readings, and is reliable and simple to use. The Cygnus DIVE
underwater thickness gauge can measure through corrosion
and coatings up to 20mm thick (when in ‘Deep-Coat’ mode)
using Single Crystal probes.
Divers wearing viking suits
IHC Hytech is an official supplier of Kirby Morgan diving
helmets, full-face and band masks, and an official repair
centre for all maintenance on this equipment. The company’s
certified KMDSI instructor is licensed to give basic repair
technician training and refresher training. After this,
participants are allowed to perform small maintenance work
and repairs to their own helmets and band masks.
The SuperLite® 27®
The SuperLite® 27® is the result of years of research and testing.
The design gives the working diver a reliable and extremely
comfortable helmet. The SuperFlow® 350 regulator used on
the SuperLite® 27®, provides outstanding performance. It
features a diver-adjustable system so that the regulator can
be ‘tuned’ during the dive according to the workload. This
adjustment also allows the diver to set the regulator as the
supply pressure varies, which is especially important when
working with a low-pressure compressor. The diver is also
provided with an internally adjustable chin support. This,
along with the adjustable neck pad on the locking collar, gives
the diver a comfortable and secure custom fit.
The Kirby Morgan® 37
The Kirby Morgan® 37 is similar to the SuperLite® 27® but has a
larger shell. It also includes the Quad-Valve™ Exhaust System.
The Kirby Morgan® 37 diving helmet continues with the
Diver wearing a Kirby Morgan ® 37 helmet
manufacturer’s long tradition of providing the highest quality
and superior performance. The Quad-Valve™ exhaust system
has less breathing resistance than the older single-valve
exhaust and provides an extremely dry helmet. This system
is recommended for diving in biologically contaminated
water. The SuperFlow® 350 regulator is a proven design that
provides excellent breathing characteristics over a wide range
of depths. The Kirby Morgan® 37 is one of the most popular
in the world. A rugged diving helmet with a traditional design,
it is considered to be the standard of the commercial diving
industry.

Training in IHC Hytech equipment
IHC Merwede customers know that they can rely on a dedicated
and comprehensive global service offering for the life cycle of
their investment. This not only helps to extend the lifespan of
the vessel or equipment, but also to maintain the correct and
safe operation of all IHC Merwede products on board.
As the technology innovator, IHC Merwede has the ability to
enhance the reliability and efficiency of its systems, which in
turn boosts the productivity of its customers’ investments. The
company’s life-cycle support maximises the uptime and return on
investment, and therefore reduces the total cost of ownership.
Concepts, design and building
IHC Merwede’s highly qualified life-cycle support personnel can
provide new or improved concepts for complete systems and
components, as well as project evaluation and advice on the
selection of equipment. The company’s team of experts designs
optimal vessels and equipment based on customer requirements
and their design, building and operational experience.
Training
In the months leading up to delivery, IHC Merwede enables
its customers to bring their crew on board and become
acquainted with the vessel, and gradually assume control. As a
result, the vessels are fully deployable from their maiden voyage,
maximising the value of IHC Merwede customers’ investments.
Training is offered with the use of simulators to allow crew
members to become familiarised with all of the equipment on
board, ranging from the complete vessel management and DP
systems, to the safe and efficient use of the mission equipment.

Maintenance management
IHC Merwede aims to assist offshore operators by improving
their system availability in the most efficient way. This can
be done with a single service offering, such as condition
monitoring, technical surveys or other maintenance tasks.
It can also be achieved by an integration of several different
services from the company’s life-cycle support programme.
Component repair
Renovations
The renovation of vessels and equipment is a complex
process. IHC Merwede possesses expert knowledge to
research, engineer and install to such a high standard that
these measures will optimise the equipment. This results in
the start of a new life cycle for the vessel or the extension of
the existing life cycle.
Life-cycle engineering
With all vessels fully engineered in 3D models and a full set
of engineering documents available, IHC Merwede has a
unique starting position to accurately and quickly provide
