Robyn R. Jackson, Ph.D.
Founder and CEO of Mindsteps™, Inc.
Dr. Robyn R. Jackson has served as a teacher, administrator, adjunct
professor, consultant, and speaker championing equity, access, and rigor
for over 15 years. In her work with teachers, administrators, schools,
and non-profit organizations, Dr. Jackson focuses on key principles
of education, rather than isolated strategies and canned approaches.
Using these principles, she helps teachers and school leaders discover
for themselves how best to increase student achievement and teacher
effectiveness.
Dr. Jackson founded Mindsteps™ Inc. in 2006 because she believes that
every child deserves a master teacher, and any teacher can become
one with the right kind of support and practice. Her unique approach
to professional development shows teachers how to become master
teachers who help every child meet or exceed rigorous learning
standards. Her work with administrators helps them effectively train and
support teachers and create highly rigorous school programs that ensure
equitable access and opportunity for all students. She also works with
school systems and non-profits to improve teacher effectiveness and
remove institutional barriers to equity, access, opportunity and rigor for
all students.
Patrick Briggs
AVID Texas State Assistant Director
Patrick Briggs currently serves as the AVID Texas State Assistant Director.
He comes to this position after 11 years as an administrator in CypressFairbank ISD. He received his Bachelor of Science in Biology and his
Master of Education in Educational Administration from Prairie View A
& M University. Patrick’s current research is on African American male
achievement. He serves on the Dream Team of AVID’s African American
Male Initiative, which is in its second year of working with predominantly
African American high schools to decrease the achievement gap for all
populations of students. This work led to the newly created and highly
successful Culturally Relevant Teaching course that is offered at AVID’s
Summer Institutes. Patrick’s passion lies in helping all learners achieve
at high levels, so all students are college-ready upon completion of high
school. He believes all students deserve a high quality education that will
enable them to make choices in life that will lead to success in any field
of their choosing. His love is working with teachers – the most valuable
resource in a school - to equip them with the tools and skills to help all
students obtain success in school and life.

Linking the AVID Tutorial to the Algebra Class
Sound familiar? Your campus is a Title I school with 80+ percent
of the population being minority and free and reduced lunch
classified. Your faculty and staff, despite their best intentions, feel
like they have reached a plateau in what they can expect in terms
of student achievement. The introduction of AVID and the facultywide embrace of AVID’s best practice instructional strategies
helped us to make amazing strides in student achievement (from
a very low school rating to the second highest rating in Texas)
and completely changed the culture of our campus. Let O’Banion
Middle School show you how!

Creating Cultural Proficiency in Your AVID
Program
Presenters: Lauren Ramers, Curriculum Consultant, AVID Center,
National Headquarters, CA and Joan Swim, AVID Coordinator/Elective
Teacher, L.V. Berkner High School, Richardson, TX
Presenters: Dr. Laurie Wiebold, AVID Regional Director, Los Angeles
County Office of Education, CA and Carmen Serret-Lopez, AVID Regional
Coordinator, Los Angeles County Office of Education, CA
“It hurts, but it works.” - words from a L.V. Berkner High School
AVID student at the 2010 National Conference. Discover why Ms.
Swim’s aspiring college students meet the lofty expectations she
sets for them. This session will outline the four stages of building
community utilized to create classrooms where safety, caring, and
high expectations are priority. Participants will explore “caring”
research, examine raising the bar and setting high expectations,
and learn how Ms. Swim’s students exemplify success, presenting
themselves with utmost poise and professionalism.
This training will help AVID leaders use cultural proficiency as
a framework to examine and improve their classroom and site
policies and practices. The presenters will start by reviewing cultural
proficiency and why it is important. They will examine tools to
help sites examine equity gaps, so leaders can create dialogue
about cultural proficiency. Participants will receive an AVID Cultural
Proficiency Continuum, a recruitment packet created with a cultural
proficiency lens, and classroom resources. A video with student
voices will be part of this presentation. This session is recommended
for experienced AVID programs.

Adapting to College: the Evolution of the First
Postsecondary AVID Program
Presenter: Richard Kirk, AVID Postsecondary Liaison, Texas State
Technical College Harlingen, TX
Presenters: Karl Debro, AVID Coordinator, Los Medanos College, CA
and Rosa Armendariz, HSI Grant Coordinator, Los Medanos College,
CA
Given AVID’s remarkable success and the high number of
underprepared students entering colleges across the country, AVID
seems like a natural fit for higher education. But, colleges enjoy far
less freedom than do middle and high schools to compel student
success. Faculty and administration play much different roles. As
the first college to implement AVID, we have spent three years
adapting AVID to the culture of higher education. In this session,
we discuss the lessons taken from the evolution of this community
college AVID program and how those lessons can inform successful
implementation of AVID in other postsecondary settings.

maintained vibrant AVID systems in some of the lowest-income,
most geographically-isolated districts in the state.
Structures, processes, protocols, and systems within a school have
significant impacts on its culture and ability to support college
readiness. In this session, you’ll learn what these terms mean; how
they are interdependent; and how to design them in alignment
with the mission and vision of your school. Participants will
become familiar with the change process and what to anticipate
when a school concentrates its efforts to reorganize the structures,
processes, protocols, and systems to strategically plan and give
purposeful meaning to all the efforts adults are making to improve
performance for all students.
