35-year-old USS Peleliu
to be decommissioned
by MC3 Ryan J. Batchelder
SAN DIEGO - USS Peleliu (LHA 5) will end nearly 35 years of
service during a decommissioning ceremony scheduled for 10 a.m.
at Pier #7 at Naval Base San Diego March 31.
The last general-purpose amphibious assault ship of the Tarawa
class, Peleliu’s decommissioning marks the end of a career comprising multiple deployments to U.S. 7th and 5th Fleet, humanitarian
efforts and peacekeeping missions.
Capable of launching a coordinated air and sea attack from one
platform, Peleliu has conducted 17 deployments, 178,051 flight
operations, served 57,983 personnel and steamed approximately
1,011,946 nautical miles since being commissioned May 3, 1980 in
Pascagoula, Mississippi.
Significant in its history, Peleliu played a critical part in Operation
Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom after the events
of Sept. 11, 2001. Peleliu was the first ship in the Global War on
Terror to deploy Marines to the beach in support of operations in
Afghanistan.
Capt. Paul Spedero will be the last in the long line of 23 commanding officers. Cmdr. Donald Hudson, Peleliu’s executive officer, will
make up the final decommissioning chain of command.
After the decommissioning process is complete, Peleliu will be
towed from San Diego to Pearl Harbor to join the reserve fleet.
Named for the Battle of Peleliu in World War II, the ship will be
placed in an inactive reserve status and moored alongside the class’s
namesake USS Tarawa (LHA 1).
Peleliu’s motto, “Pax Per Potens,” will stand long after its decommissioning as a testament to the ship’s legacy of providing “Peace
Through Power.”

USS Chancellorsville to be forward
deployed to Japan by this summer
Classifieds
PEARL HARBOR - The Navy announced Jan. 16 that USS Chancellorsville (CG 62) will join the Forward Deployed Naval Forces
in Yokosuka, Japan.
As part of the Navy’s long-range plan to send the most advanced
and capable units to the Asia-Pacific, Chancellorsville will leave her
homeport of San Diego and deploy to Yokosuka this summer.
Chancellorsville completed a combat systems update through the
Navy’s Cruiser Modernization program, making her among the most
capable ships of her class. She is fitted with the latest Aegis Baseline
9 combat system, and will be the first to be forward deployed with
that capability. The Baseline 9 suite of capabilities includes state-ofthe-art air, surface, and undersea warfare systems needed to directly
support the carrier strike group.

Hagel: Fight to end sexual
assault must be ‘personal’
Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel provides closing remarks at the Air Force Sexual Assault Prevention and
Response Summit on Joint Base Andrews, Md., Jan.
16. DoD photo by Casper Manlangit
by Amaani Lyle
JOINT BASE ANDREWS,
Md. - Efforts to eliminate the
baneful issue of sexual assault
“must be personal,” Defense
Secretary Chuck Hagel said
in closing remarks at the Air
Force Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Summit
Jan. 16.
Hagel said the military community is unique in its raised
standards and the expectation
that service members will commit to each other both on and
off the battlefield.
“We should fundamentally
begin taking care of each other
in personal relationships and
wherever else,” Hagel said. “If
we don’t understand that dimension of this crime, then we
will miss the whole point.”
The secretary noted that
absent personal accountability and responsibility, sexual
assault will persist no matter
how many laws, restrictions,
directives or resources are
created.
“It won’t be an Air Force
or a military free of sexual
assault unless we come at it
from a basis of the humanity
and the health of the force,”
Hagel said. “We have to trust
each other.”
While he cited “encouraging progress” in stanching the
issue over the last year, Hagel
acknowledged more can be
done, particularly in areas such
as social retaliation, which he
said stems from the overall
environment.
“You cannot take the responsibility and the accountability
for this out of the chain of
command,” Hagel asserted.
“If you see something, if you
sense something, it’s your responsibility to step in and deal
with it -- stop it, or if you can’t
stop it get somebody who will
stop it.”
Hagel praised the military
as a whole for its transparency
and recognition of the problem,
but said awareness is just the
starting point.
“College campuses, other
areas that are dealing with
this issue, are looking to the
military for help … because we
have institutionalized this as a
huge challenge and a priority
for who we are,” Hagel said.
Ultimately, Hagel said, the
Air Force and members of all
services are building a legacy
as role models and leaders
with a tremendous effect on
the future.
“We have a unique oppor-
tunity because of how we are
structured, how we are organized … that gives us possibilities and avenues of approach to
this that no other institution or
community of families has,”
Hagel said. “We’ve got to fix this
problem -- it won’t get fixed in
Congress, in the White House or
anywhere else.”

Kan said that while launching
satellites and deploying ground
systems are key milestones,
the program’s highlight will be
when the Navy turns the system
over to U.S. Strategic Command
for operations. The next generation of warfighters will find
innovative ways of using it that
the system designers had never
conceived.
This mission was launched
aboard an Atlas V Evolved
Expendable Launch Vehicle
(EELV) 551 configuration vehicle, which includes a 5-meter
diameter payload fairing along
with five Aerojet Rocketdyne
solid rocket motors attached
to the Atlas booster. The Atlas
booster for this mission was
powered by the RD AMROSS
RD-180 engine and the Centaur
upper stage was powered by the
Aerojet Rocketdyne RL10C-1
engine. This is ULA’s 1st launch
in 2015, the 52nd Atlas V mission and the fifth Atlas V 551
launch.
MUOS is a next-generation
narrowband tactical satellite
communications system designed to significantly improve
ground communications to U.S.
forces on the move and around
the globe.
The EELV program was established by the Air Force to
provide assured access to space
for Department of Defense and
other government payloads.
The commercially developed
EELV program supports the full
range of government mission
requirements, while delivering
on schedule and providing significant cost savings over the
heritage launch systems.
With more than a century
of combined heritage, United
Launch Alliance is the nation’s
most experienced and reliable
launch service provider. ULA

has successfully delivered more
than 90 satellites to orbit that
provide critical capabilities for
troops in the field, aid meteorologists in tracking severe weather,
enable personal device-based
GPS navigation and unlock the
mysteries of our solar system.
The third satellite is part of the
Mobile User Objective System
(MUOS), which operates like a
smartphone network from space,
vastly improving secure satellite
communications for mobile U.S.
forces. Unlike its predecessor
system, MUOS provides users
a global, on-demand, beyondline-of-sight capability to transmit and receive high-quality
voice and mission data from a
high-speed Internet Protocolbased system.
MUOS provides secure communications between warfighters around the globe, as well as
connection with classified and
unclassified networks and DoD
phone systems. This capability
directly impacts dismounted,
ground-based mobile users who
require secure voice and mission data but is also available to
ships, aircraft and vehicles.
MUOS is more than just a
five-satellite constellation. It
additionally comprises four
ground stations across the globe,
complex software to manage the
network and a Wideband Code
Division Multiple Access waveform that serves as an interface
for end-user radios.

“The ULA team is honored
to deliver this critical mission
into orbit for the Navy and Air
Force with the support of our
many mission partners,” said
Jim Sponnick, ULA vice president, Atlas and Delta Programs.
“The MUOS-3 spacecraft is the
heaviest payload to launch atop
an Atlas V launch vehicle. The
Atlas V generated more than two
and half million pounds of thrust
at liftoff to meet the demands
of lifting this nearly 7.5-ton
satellite. Today’s launch was

the current and near future capability,” said Navy Capt. Joe Kan,
MUOS program manager.
Obama seeks authorization for use of force against ISIL
by Tyrone C. Marshall Jr.
WASHINGTON - In his State
of the Union address Jan. 20,
President Barack Obama called on
Congress to authorize the use of
military force against the Islamic
State of Iraq and the Levant.
In a speech largely focused
on his domestic and economic
agenda, Obama also touched
on a myriad of topics related
to the Defense Department,
noting the start of the century
“dawned with terror touching
our shores.”
“We are 15 years into this new
century - 15 years that dawned
with terror touching our shores that unfolded with a new generation fighting two long and costly
wars. Tonight, for the first time
since 9/11, our combat mission
in Afghanistan is over.”
Six years ago, the president
noted, nearly 180,000 American troops served in Iraq and
Afghanistan. Today, he added,
fewer than 15,000 remain.
“We salute the courage and
sacrifice of every man and
woman in this 9/11 generation
who has served to keep us safe,”
Obama said. “We are humbled
and grateful for your service.”
Nation has learned some
“costly” lessons over the last 13
years of combat, Obama said,
and he detailed efforts to have
Afghan forces take charge of
their own country’s security.
“Instead of Americans patrolling the valleys of Afghanistan,”
Obama said, “we’ve trained
their security forces who’ve
now taken the lead, and we’ve
honored our troops’ sacrifice by
supporting that country’s first
democratic transition.”
Partnerships have taken
the place of unilateral action,
Obama said, noting that instead
of sending large numbers of
ground forces overseas, he said,
the U.S. now works in concert
with nations from South Asia
to North Africa to deny safe
haven to terrorists who threaten
America.
In Iraq and Syria, Obama said,
American leadership, including
military power, is stopping the
Islamic State of Iraq and the
Levant’s advance.
“Instead of getting dragged
into another ground war in the
Middle East,” he said, “we are
leading a broad coalition, including Arab nations, to degrade and
ultimately destroy this terrorist
group.” The United States has a
role in that effort, the president
added, and he called on Congress
to provide the authority to use
force against ISIL.
“Tonight,” Obama said, “I call
on this Congress to show the
world that we are united in this
mission by passing a resolution
to authorize the use of force
against ISIL,” he said. “We need
that authority.”
Additionally, Obama said,
U.S. support to a moderate opposition in Syria not only can
help in the effort there, but also
can assist people everywhere
who stand up to the “bankrupt”
ideology of violent extremism.
This effort will take time and
require focus, he said.
Obama praised U.S. military
power for its role in what he
called “smarter American leadership.”
“My first duty as commander
in chief is to defend the United
States of America,” he said. “In
doing so, the question is not
whether America leads in the
world, but how.
“When we make rash decisions, reacting to the headlines
instead of using our heads - when
the first response to a challenge
is to send in our military - then
we risk getting drawn into unnecessary conflicts, and neglect
the broader strategy we need for
a safer, more prosperous world,”
he continued. “That’s what our
enemies want us to do. I believe
in a smarter kind of American
leadership. We lead best when
we combine military power with
strong diplomacy, leverage our
power with coalition building
and don’t let our fears blind us
to the opportunities that this new
century presents.”
The president said the U.S. must
stand united with people around the
world who have been targeted by
terrorists - from a school in Pakistan to the streets of Paris.
“We will continue to hunt
down terrorists and dismantle
their networks,” he said. “We
reserve the right to act unilaterally, as we have done relentlessly
since I took office, to take out
terrorists who pose a direct threat
to us and our allies.”
Next Sergeant Major of the
Marine Corps announced
WASHINGTON - The Commandant of the Marine Corps announced Jan. 20 the selection of Sgt. Maj. Ronald L. Green as the
next Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps.
“It gives me great pleasure to name Sgt. Maj. Green as the 18th
Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps,” said Gen. Joseph Dunford
Jr., the commandant of the Marine Corps.
“His dynamic leadership is well known throughout the ranks of
our Corps. His wide range of experience in both peacetime and
combat, and his record of performance make him extraordinarily
well-qualified to serve as our senior enlisted leader,” Dunford
said.
Green, currently the sergeant major of I Marine Expeditionary
Force, will replace Sgt. Maj. Micheal P. Barrett, who has held the
billet since June 2011. Barrett is credited with improving Marines’
training, education, compensation, quality of life, bachelor enlisted
quarters, on-base housing, and family support programs.

Bell tolling
ceremony honors
lost submariners
by MC1 Steven Khor
PEARL HARBOR - A special bell tolling ceremony was
held at the Submarine Base
Chapel on Joint Base Pearl
Harbor-Hickam Jan. 14, in
memory of both submariners and submarines lost in
the month of January during
World War II.
Submariners past and present gathered to honor and
remember those sacrifices for
the nation. Lt. Bill Gritton,
chaplain from Naval Submarine Support Command,
said the importance of the
ceremony is the remembrance
of what the sub force has done
in the past, and what they’re
still doing today.
“The idea is to remind
people of the interconnectedness of the submarine force,”
said Gritton. “It’s to remind
people that the submarine
legacy has extended back to
1900.”
The bell tolling ceremony
is held every month to honor
and pay respects to the 52 submarines and crews lost during
the war. The month of January
honored five subs and their
crews that were lost, as well as
10 Sailors that were lost while
the submarines themselves
made it home.
She was sunk while engaging a Japanese convoy by
direct fire and depth charges
from Japanese destroyers.
The defense secretary signed
two policy memorandums in
December directing Defense Department leaders to implement
standardized procedures to allow
veteran, military and militarysupport nonprofit organizations
better access to provide support
to troops and military families.
“National VSOs and MSOs,”
Hagel said in one memo, “are a
critical component of our overall framework of care for our
service members throughout all
phases of their military service,
but especially their transition to
civilian life and veteran status.”
Nonprofit non-federal entities, he said, can be of critical
importance to service members throughout their careers,
and within the bounds of law
and regulation, it’s in the department’s interest to maintain
strong and positive relationships
with them.
“These memos serve to reemphasize those privileges
granted under the law or flexibilities authorized under current
DoD policy,” Hagel said. These
initiatives direct immediate

The directives, Hagel said,
also provide clarity to installation commanders on adjudicating requests for space or
services.
In a letter sent to retired Army
Gen. Gordon R. Sullivan, president of the Association of the
United States Army, and other
nonprofit organizations, the
defense secretary layed out six
aspects of the initiatives which
are designed to remove “unnecessary barriers and inconsistencies” in dealing with these
organizations.
Hagel expressed pride in
what he termed a major accomplishment, and explained
the importance of the directives.
-- Installation commanders
will provide available space and
associated services on military
installations allowing national
VSOs and MSOs to provide
VA-accredited representation
services to transitioning service
members.
“These directives underscore
my belief that events and support provided by VSOs, MSOs
and military-support nonprofits
can be critically important to the
welfare of our service members
and families,” he said.
The department must maintain
positive relationships with those
organizations, Hagel said, to
facilitate their delivery of services to military personnel who
need them.
-- All requests and decisions
on installation access, use of
space or logistical support will
be made in writing.
-- Installation commanders are
directed to be welcoming and
supportive of nonprofit organizations that enhance morale and

For Evelyna, a make-up artist,
the program has been a godsend.
“I can’t thank the VA enough,
which has never refused me a
thing,” she said. “Every five
years I get a new wheelchair,
among other services, and I can’t
tell you how much that helps.
Knowing they have my back
relieves a lot of stress from my
family and allows me to focus
on my work.”
For Dick and Cindy, the program has given their daughter,
Melinda Marie, the opportunity
to lead a quality life. “When Melinda was born forty years ago,”
Dick said, “we were told that if
she lived, she would probably be
mentally retarded and we should
consider institutionalizing her.
Of course, we had no intention
of giving up. We were committed to loving her and giving her
a chance to thrive.”
The medical support provided by the program, including
approximately 1,300 people
have enrolled, and the program
has evolved into a case management climate where VA is looking at better ways to help people
stricken with the disorder get the
care they need. Case management is a process that allows a
manager to assist in facilitating
the beneficiaries’ health care
with a local medical provider
and the program.
Ira King, a case management
liaison at the VA Chief Business
Office Purchased Care group in
Denver, Colo., explains that they
provide numerous services for
the beneficiaries. “We connect
them to local case management
agencies,” he notes. “We find
a full range of services in their
local areas that include medical
and mental health providers,
pharmacies, medical equipment
and supplies. We also work with
providers of services to make
sure spina bifida patients are not
improperly billed.”
Thus far the case management
liaison efforts have been successful and there is every indication
that individual case management
will expand further as more beneficiaries become aware of the
service. For more information,
visit www.va.gov/purchasedcare and click on Programs for
Dependents on the left and then

According to the most recent statistics available, 259 people died
from prescription drug abuse in San Diego County in 2013, a slight
decrease from the previous year when 268 deaths were reported.
The Safe Prescribing Guidelines establishes 10 practices for local
emergency departments to consider when dispensing painkillers.
Among them:
1.We do not usually prescribe pain medication if you already
receive pain medication from another health care provider. You
should have only ONE provider and ONE pharmacy helping you
with pain.
2.If pain medications are needed, we can only give a small
amount.
3.We do not refill stolen prescriptions. We do not fill lost prescriptions.
4.We do not prescribe long-acting pain medications: OxyContin,
MSContin, Dilaudid, fentanyl, methadone
5.We may ask you to show a photo ID when you receive a prescription for pain medication.
6.We use a statewide computer system that tracks opioid and other
controlled substance prescriptions.
“Prescription drug abuse is a problem with serious repercussions
to quality of life in our region,” said Nick Macchione, director of the
County Health and Human Services Agency. “Preventing drug abuse
and getting people into treatment is one of the goals of Live Well
San Diego, the County’s ongoing initiative to improve the health of
San Diego County residents.”
The County funds prevention and treatment services throughout
the region. Treatment is available by calling the County’s Access
and Crisis Line at (888) 724-7240.
People are also encouraged to report drug activity in their community to their local police department or sheriff’s station. They can also
call Prescription Drug Hotline at (877) 662-6384. Information about
local efforts is also available at SanDiegoRxAbuseTaskForce.org.

Jan. 29.
“What is particularly important about this event is that
it gives midshipmen the opportunity to think through their
options prior to having to stand
in front of the board and choose a
ship,” said Lt. Ashley O’Keefe, a
SWO and flag aide to the USNA
superintendent. “It allows them
to weigh the pros and cons of
each platform, and get perspectives from officers who likely
just came off of those ships a
few months ago.”
Approximately 250 midshipmen were assigned to the surface
warfare, and they will have the
opportunity to choose from
a large variety of available
ships including: guided-missile
cruisers (CG), guided-missile
destroyers (DDG), amphibious
assault ships (LHA)/(LHD), amphibious transport docks (LPD),
dock landing ships (LSD), mine
countermeasure vessels (MCM),
amphibious command ships
(LCC), and littoral combat ships
(LCS).
Recently re-designated as fast
frigates (FF) by the secretary of
the Navy at this year’s Surface
Navy Association (SNA) Symposium, the littoral combat ships
will be available for selection
for the midshipmen for just the
second year. This is the first year
traditional frigates (FFGs) will
not be available for selection.
“It allows them to
weigh the pros and cons
of each platform, and
get perspectives from
officers who likely just
came off of those ships a
few months ago.”
Midshipmen pick their ships
in order based on their overall
order of merit, or class rank.
Surface warfare officers and
instructors from around the
academy yard attended the
event, offering advice and answering any and all questions
that the midshipmen had about

their platforms. It is a unique opportunity for experienced SWOs
to provide information and mentorship to the midshipmen before
they choose a particular ship and
homeport. The goal is to ensure
every midshipman picking a ship
has made an informed choice
based on all of the variables.
“Platform Night is a special
time - it’s always an honor for
me to be able to discuss the
excitement that comes with the
surface warfare community with
the midshipmen,” said Cmdr.
Jason J. Brianas, deputy director,
Vice Adm. James B. Stockdale
Center for Ethical Leadership.
“To offer advice, discuss the
issues that matter to them, and
respond to the focused questions,
when they’re about to select
ships just a few weeks away
- it is an incredibly informative
period in their career, and we get
to do that together.”
“Different ships provide different opportunities, and every
midshipman we talked to last
night has their own unique
desire for their first ship,” said
Lt. Andrew Marsh, seamanship
and navigation instructor. “I
look forward to Homeport Night
next week so we can continue to
guide and mentor these future
SWO ensigns towards the right
ship assignment, all leading, of
course, to Ship Selection Night.
This choice is a major career
milestone that they will remember for a very long time.”

A. Research reveals that most
narcissists are aware of their
self-absorption. Start by asking
a potential hire or someone new
to what extent do they agree
with this, “I am a narcissist,” on
a scale of 1-10. Incredibly, truly
self-absorbed people will generally give you a high number on
the scale.
If you want to beat around
the bush more, there are other
terrific screening questions
to catch your local workplace
narcissist. Consider posing the
following statements and questions to a person, either verbally
or in writing, and see how they
respond.
-I feel most people don’t
understand me and that only
exceptional and unusual people
really get me.
-If people criticize me, I may
react with icy indifference or
intense anger.
-If you ran the world do you
think it would be a better place or
does this thought seem frightening to you?

-Do you think there is a lot

or do you think you are much
more capable than others?
-Are you very much like
everyone else or are you exceptional?
-Are you comfortable depending on others to get things done
or do you rarely depend on others to help you?
Some of these are based on the
diagnostic criteria for narcissistic
personality and some are from a
test called the Narcissistic Personality Inventory (NPI). Oddly
enough, the most powerful
question in the entire inventory
is simply to ask someone if they
think they are narcissistic. It turns
out that self-absorbed people are
so self-absorbed they don’t see
a problem telling everyone their
world is all about them.
aging an unprecedented epidemic
of self-absorption.
In the workplace if everybody
doesn’t win, believe me, the
people who lose try to get even.
The only way to create solid
long-term profitability is to have
empathy for everyone’s agenda
and negotiate solutions that don’t
run any one party over.
In the beginning, narcissists
are the prettiest most charismatic
peacock at any party. They flatter
you, charm you and promise you
the moon. Once you fall prey to
their glamour, you will find that
you are only a tool to be used to
achieve their own ends.
The reason narcissists create so
much havoc in their workplaces
is that they have no empathy and
no interest in anyone’s agenda
but their own. The people who
have a full personality disorder
will run over anyone to get what
they want. They will cheat, lie
and manipulate in an effective
cold-blooded fashion.
Before you make your next
business decision, next hire or
take another job, examine more
carefully the level of narcissism
in the situation you are about
to enter. If you screen out your
workplace narcissists, you will
find yourself surrounded by
grateful, empathic and loyal allies, and your career will thrive!

Although our kids would have
rather gone to school wearing
headgear, we wanted them to
experience the events that sparked
the American Revolution over
two centuries ago. Glancing in
the visor mirror at our teenagers
sprawled open-mouthed in the
back seats, I repeated the thought
that had passed through my mind
countless times: “Hopefully they’ll
appreciate this one day.”
by Lisa Smith Molinari
George Washington once said,
“If freedom of speech is taken
away, then dumb and silent may
we be lead, like sheep to slaughter.” It was with this same logic
that our kids mouthed off at us
recently.
“History?! What do you mean
we’re going to experience ‘history’?!” Lilly whined from the
back of the minivan. Anna’s
groggy eyes peered incredulously from under a mop of bed
head. Hayden, still half asleep,
grimaced in solidarity with his
sisters.
It was 9 am, which on weekends, is essentially the middle of
the night to our three teenagers,
and we were driving from our
base house on Naval Station
Newport, Rhode Island to Boston to spend the day walking
“The Freedom Trail.”
“This is our last chance to do
something as a family before
Hayden goes back to college, so
zip it,” my husband Francis dictated like King George. Too sleepy
to battle, the kids surrendered and
went immediately back to sleep.
The meal was of historic proportions, and our patriots were
properly refueled to survive the
rest of the march, even while
lugging plastic doggie bags of
leftover slices. We passed three
more sites -- Copp’s Hill Burying
Ground, The Old North Church,
and Paul Revere’s house -- before
the kids asserted their inalienable
right to dessert.

SAN DIEGO - Commander Naval Air Forces (CNAF) held a
change of command and retirement ceremony Jan. 22 aboard USS
John C. Stennis (CVN 74) while pierside at Naval Air Station North
Island.
Generally, SPRINT is comprised of a psychiatrist and/or
psychologist, social worker,
psychiatric nurse practitioner,
chaplain and neuropsychiatric
technicians, but the flexible
composition of the team means
that mission-specific teams can
be created and deployed on very
short notice.
Rear Adm. Mike Shoemaker, who is scheduled for promotion to
the rank of vice admiral prior to the ceremony, relieved Vice Adm.
David H. Buss as CNAF.
CNAF is responsible for the material readiness, administration,
and training of all Naval Aviation commands and for providing operationally ready squadrons and aircraft carriers to the fleet.
This SPRINT element aboard
Sampson was comprised of
a chaplain, psychologist and
psychiatric technician who all
deployed on short notice over the
holidays to get to the crash site.
Immediately following the change of command, Buss, who began
serving as the Navy’s sixth “Air Boss” in October 2012, retired after
36 years of Naval service.
During the search, Sampson
found a number of passenger
remains from the crash. “If left

shortly after.

worked with six boat team members in an after-care group meeting to mitigate operational stress
factors. He also gave operational

on coping mechanisms and participating on the aircrew Human

“Chaplains are the only people
in the Navy who can offer absolute confidentiality to Sailors. It
is vitally important that Sailors
can safely share, without fear
of judgment or reprisal, any
thoughts and feelings they wish
to share,” said Capt. Cameron

“Having the chance to talk
with complete confidentiality
to a chaplain has proven to be
very helpful for many Sailors as they work through their
thoughts and feelings resulting
from professional and personal
challenges.”
SPRINT teams provide the
opportunity to talk about any
topic in complete confidentiality with mental health experts to
help process what happened, offer words of encouragement and
hope in the midst of a tragedy
and suggest stress management
solutions and healthy coping
mechanisms.

“I can’t be prouder of the professionalism of my crew,” said
Cape St. George’s Commanding

in every mission we were given

Military Families 5k/10k Run & Walk
With our flight schedule in full
force, I was offered a chance to
take a backseat ride today.
14 • www.armedforcesdispatch.com • THURSDAY, JANUARY 22, 2015
This was my first one with
the 2015 team, and although
our new pilots have only been
flying training flight together
for a week, they are already
looking sharp. Flight training
begins by practicing formation
flying and basic maneuvers.
With each flight, our new team
sets the building blocks for
more complicated maneuvers.
But there are no “easy” flights
– every flight requires precision
and total concentration. During
these initial flights the pilots
learn what markers on the jet to
focus on (Also known as “flying
paint” – for many maneuvers,
pilots 2 and 3 fly formation by
focusing their eyes on specific
points on Boss’ jet) and how to
move the plane for each particular maneuver. By our first show
March 14, they will have flown
more than 120 training flights;
the culmination of those flights
at the El Centro Air Show will
demonstrate the world-renowned
eighteen inch wingtip-to-canopy
separation the Blue Angels are
known for.
As the Public Affairs Officer, I
am fortunate to often be granted
the opportunity of flying in the
backseat during practices. I’m
often asked “What is it like to
ride in the back of a jet?” This
can be tough to explain, but I’ll
try. Think of it as trying to drive
a car while someone continues
to add and remove sacks of flour
on your body. These sacks each
weigh the same weight as your
body. For some maneuvers, the
pilots will experience 7 g’s (G
is short for gravitational force)
– the equivalent of 7 of those
sacks of flour pushing down
on you!
It is a new year, and your U.S. Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron, the Blue Angels, are already hard at
work preparing for the 2015 air show season. Last
week we relocated the entire squadron from our
headquarters in Pensacola, Florida to our annual
training facility in sunny El Centro, California, and we
are thrilled to be back in the skies doing what we do
best!
During today’s practice, the
team focused on maneuvers
that are relatively low G, mostly
two to three. Although it doesn’t
sound like much, don’t be fooled!
After an hour in the backseat, I
emerged from the jet covered in
sweat and shaking with the effort
of sustaining alternating low G
forces. It made me appreciate
the efforts our pilots go through
– the same efforts Navy pilots
around the world face around the
world, around the clock. It isn’t
an easy job – but they make it
look that way!
We will be periodically checking back in to Navy Live to
update you on the team’s progress. This is America’s Navy,

Archaeological Lecture slated for Jan. 27
The San Diego River: An Archaeological and Historical Perspective on Tuesday, January 27, 7:30 pm at Los Peñasquitos Adobe,
Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve,Off Black Mountain Road, beyond Canyonside Community Park. This talk, by Natalie Brodie,
Senior Cultural Resources Manager at LSA Associates in Carlsbad,
provides an examination of the archaeology and history of the San
Diego River, and how it shaped the modern perceptions of those
of us living in San Diego. The main focus of this study includes
archaeological evidence of water use along the San Diego River, the
subsequent development of the river in the form of irrigation, storage, and transport, and the future of water use for San Diegans. The
goal of this paper is to provide a background and solid framework
on which to build a more comprehensive understanding of water
use in the San Diego region, and how to use applied anthropology
to shape water policy with a greater understanding of the changing
culture of water in the San Diego region. For directions or additional
information, call the San Diego County Archaeological Society at

‘Gardens Then and Now’ tour is
centennial celebration of historic and
contemporary San Diego gardens
Every spring, the San Diego
Horticultural Society and the
San Diego Floral Association
each separately organize a tour
of significant gardens in San
Diego. This year, these two
groups are joining forces to celebrate the centennial of the 2015
Panama Exhibition in Balboa
Park. This year’s spring garden
tour, Gardens Then and Now,
will feature gardens in private
homes in historic neighborhoods
surrounding Balboa Park: Marston Hills, Mission Hills, and
North Park/28th Street. Over a
dozen gardens will provide tour
goers with the opportunity to see
both historic and contemporary
landscapes.
The tour will be held on April
11, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This
is a self-guided tour and ticket
holders can visit the gardens
in any order, at their own pace.
Tickets are $25 for members and
$30 for non-members. Additional information and advance
tickets are available at www.
sdhort.org/GardenTour; a tour
map will be sent by email to advance online ticket purchasers,
allowing them to begin their tour
at any point. Tickets may also
be purchased on the day of the
tour at a central location. Plants,
jewelry and garden-related merchandise will be available for
sale and fine artists will display
their work.
Marston Hills, Mission Hills
and North Park/28th Street
include homes originally landscaped by some of San Diego’s
premier landscapers: Kate Sessions, her nephew Milton Sessions, and W.F. Sinjen. While
the gardens have been modified
over the years, tour-goers will be
able to see the trademark styles
of these important figures. In
particular, the water-conserving plantings and stone walls
characteristic of Milton Sessions
and the curving pathways, laced
trees, and tropical settings favored by Sinjen will be on view.
Gardens in homes designed by
two significant San Diego architects, Requa and Hurlburt, are
also included in the tour.
The San Diego Horticultural
Society is the largest horticultural organization in San Diego
County, celebrating its 20th
year. The San Diego Floral
Association is the oldest garden
club in the County, founded in
1907.
Works by 36 San Diego-Area artists to be featured

[UN]BOUND: Artists’ Books
from the Athenaeum Music &
Arts Library. In 25 years of collecting, the Athenaeums artists’
book collection has grown into
an important resource for artists,
researchers, and presses. While
portions of the collection are
continually displayed for visitors
in the Athenaeum’s North Reading Room and are also available

run through April 26. A reception for the participating artists
is planned on opening day from
12 to 2 p.m. The exhibition and
reception are open to the public
and admission is free.
Not limited to any particular
artistic movement, but established as a medium, artists’
books are often so diverse that
they are challenging to define.
The books selected for this
exhibition reflect that diversity
and creativity. Included are the
conceptual books of the late
1960s to 1970s that brought artists’ books to the attention of the
established art world as well as
unique-books, fine press limited
editions, and book-objects. The
San Diego artists featured often
push the form, employ a wide
assortment of materials and
methods of bookbinding, and
explore varied subjects from the
personal to the public.
Coinciding with the exhibition, Judy Christensen of the
San Diego Book Arts group
will be offering a series of free
book arts workshops in the Mary

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22):
Have faith in your fantasies.
Without inspiration, you
won’t have the chance to be
drenched by perspiration.
You can make your dreams
a reality this week by being
energetic.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov.
22-Dec. 21): You might
think you know the answer,
but your judgment and assessments could be off base
until the second half of the
week. Bypass unimportant
obstacles and ignore minor
errors.
TAURUS (April 20-May
20): You don’t need to
bully your way to perfection. Other people might
not be as picky as you are.
You will be much happier
if you turn a blind eye to
insignificant mistakes this
week.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept.
22): Put a cushion between
you and insensitive remarks. Don’t let criticism
undermine your self-confidence, but use it as a tool
to become a better person.
By mid-week, your love life
improves.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22Jan. 19): If you don’t quit,
you won’t fail. Take pride in
your ability to remain tenacious about the job, the task,
or the relationship you’re
working hard to perfect. You
can overcome obstacles this
week.
GEMINI (May 21-June
20): Everything will not

You could be much too
optimistic about a certain
relationship or idea in the
week ahead.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct.

you may have a change of
heart due to flattery from an
unexpected source. Avoid
going overboard with personal spending. Be sure
you act only from sincere
motives.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb.
18): You may learn that
passing fads only provide
temporary satisfaction in
the upcoming week. A new
acquaintance might seem
exotic but could let you
down once the first bloom
of friendship fades.
CANCER (June 21-July
22): During the week ahead,
you might be more concerned with finances than
with your personal appearance. You want to look your
best, but might find that it
takes extra funds to do so
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov.
21): Take your time and be
thorough. You understand
that slipshod work won’t
earn you any brownie points
this week. It requires a sharp
tack to pin down a situation
neatly and securely.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March
20): Make a list and prioritize your long-term, as
well as short-term, goals.
The cold shoulder you may
receive when you promote

AutoMatters+: Outdoor World, ‘Blackhat’ & ‘John Loves Mary’
of this one on numerous trips to
Las Vegas.
If it were not for the retail
elements, this could easily be a
world-class natural history museum and aquarium. Inside the
large two-storey building you will
find a fantastic taxidermy collection of wild animals posed within
Movie Review: “John Loves
Mary”
For company while folding the
laundry late last night, I turned
on the TV in the laundry room.
Soon I was intently watching an
old (1949) black & white Warner
Brothers film on TCM (Turner
Classic Movies). “John Loves
Mary” stars Ronald Reagan and,
in her first movie role, Patricia
Neal.
Outdoor World
Every year at the International CES (Consumer Electronics
Show) in Las Vegas I am totally
surprised by some of the things
that I encounter. This year’s trip
was no exception.
Today’s CES 2015 experience
actually begins at the end of my
trip. I had already checked out of
my hotel and was driving south on
I-15, through the outskirts of Las
Vegas. I decided to make a quick
pit stop for dinner at the Silverton
Resort Hotel & Casino.
The Silverton is connected to
what looks like a huge log cabin.
A sign on it reads Bass Pro Shops
Outdoor World.
Inside the Silverton I noticed a
huge tank containing exotic fish
– and a live mermaid! Okay, she
was not exactly a mermaid, but
she was underwater in Mermaid
Cove, entertaining little children
who watched with delight from
the other side of the glass.
Then I noticed an entrance to
what struck me as similar to the
Redwood Creek Challenge Trail
area in Disney’s California Adventure. What lies inside is truly
breathtaking.
Have you ever seen a Bass Pro
Shops Outdoor World? I had not,
despite passing by the outside
County...
Movie Review: “Blackhat”
In theaters now is “Blackhat,”
a fictitious drama that involves
international nuclear terrorism and
high-level computer hacking. This
premise should have been woven
into an intriguing thriller but
unfortunately it is, instead, agonizingly slow-paced and violent. For
the most part, I found it boring.
Enough said about that.
Bear
appropriate habitat dioramas,
waterfalls and rustic western settings. All of this is tastefully and
appropriately intertwined with
every conceivable type of sporting goods merchandise, as well
as boats and ATVs. There are
also indoor archery and shooting
ranges.
I heartily recommend a visit to
Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World in
Las Vegas, or find a location near
you. I spent several hours there
walking around in amazement and
shooting pictures. I heard that the
location in Rancho Cucamonga
even has a themed restaurant. If
only there was one in San Diego
This delightful movie is set in
New York City shortly after the
end of World War II. From its title
I expected this to be another boring film, but I was very pleasantly
surprised. The longer I watched,
the more I enjoyed it.
It is a romantic comedy about a
soldier named John (Ronald Rea-
gan) who returns
from WWII and is
warmly greeted by
the woman he loves.
Marriage is in their
near-term plans.
However there is a
problem standing
in their way – and
Mary knows nothing of it. Before he
left Europe, as repayment to his best
friend – the GI who
saved his life, John
married his friend’s
long-lost English
girlfriend!
It’s not like it
sounds. John only
married her so that
he could legally
bring her into the US
for his best friend to
marry shortly thereafter. John’s plan
was to get a divorce
within a few weeks
of returning Stateside, so that she and
John’s friend could
get married and then
live happily ever
after. John assumed
that his friend was
Family enjoying the fish
still heartbroken over losing track of her, after
unexpectedly being deployed to fight in D-Day
before he could even say goodbye.
In the meantime we learn that John’s friend,
having been back in the US for four years, has
long since gotten over her and has married someone else. They are expecting a baby any day.
John’s future father-in-law, an influential
US Senator with responsibilities related to the
military, is moving heaven and earth so that John
can immediately marry his daughter.
“John Loves Mary” is a really
funny film. It reminds me that a
movie with a good story does not
need to have eye-popping special
effects – or even be in color! It is
available on DVD at www.tcm.
com and www.WBShop.com.
As always, please write to [email protected] with your
comments and suggestions.

The Loft
For five men, the opportunity to share a penthouse in the
city — in which to carry on extramarital affairs — is a
dream come true, until the dead body of an unknown
woman turns up. Realizing that her killer must be one of
their group, the men are gripped by paranoia as each
one suspects another. Friendships are tested, loyalties
are questioned, and marriages crumble while fear and
suspicion run rampant.

La Jolla Music Society presents The Ukulele
Orchestra of Great Britain at MCASD Sherwood Auditorium on Friday, Jan. 23 at 8 pm.
Self-described as a group of all-singing, all-strumming Ukulele
players, who use instruments bought with loose change and believe
that all genres of music are available for reinterpretation, as long as
they are played on the Ukulele. They offer widely-varying programs
from Tchaikovsky to Nirvana switching easily from Otis Redding to
Spaghetti Western soundtracks. The Ukes perform to sold-out houses
around the world and have also produced a prolific discography including both studio and live audio, DVDs, as well as collaborations
with iconic British rock and pop artists like Madness, The Ministry
of Sound, The Kaiser Chiefs, and Cat Stevens among others.
