 The
National Honor Society for Dance Arts
is a program of the
National Dance Education Organization
. Dear NDEO Member, We are very happy to announce that the new National Honor Society for Dance Arts (NSHDA) website and induction system is now up and running at
www.nhsdandeo.org
! Please read the following instructions for more information on using the new website to start a new chapter, activate your current chapter in the new system, and induct students. DIRECTIONS FOR STARTING A NEW CHAPTER: To start a new NHSDA Chapter, your school will need to be an Institutional Member of NDEO. To learn more about membership and sign up, please visit www.ndeo.org/membership2015
. You will need your 4 or 5 digit NDEO Institutional Member Number in order to apply for a chapter. 1.) Once you have signed up for and paid your NDEO membership, go to www.nhsdandeo.org
and click on
Start A Chapter
. 2.) Choose the appropriate chapter type for your institution’s student body. Junior Program Chapter are for students in grades 68, Secondary Program Chapters are for students in grades 912, and Collegiate Program Chapters are for students at postsecondary schools that offer dance courses for credit. A school may have both Junior and Secondary Program Chapters if they enroll students in both grade levels; however, the Chapter Sponsor will need to apply for each Chapter separately, filling out one application for the Junior Chapter and a second one for the Secondary Chapter. Once you have determined which Chapter is best for your school, click on the
Apply to Start a Chapter
button. 3.) Click on the
Chapter Application
button if your school already has an NDEO Institutional Membership. If your school does not have an NDEO Institutional Membership, click the Join NDEO button to be directed to NDEO sign up, then come back to the NHSDA website and complete the chapter application. 4.) Fill out the Chapter Application with the requested contact information and program description. Click
Add Chapter Contact
to input the names and contact information of people you would like to have notified by email when your chapter is approved and when you induct students. These could include school principals, district personnel, deans, department chairs, fine arts coordinators, and the like. Studios should add the contact information for the principals at schools in which their students are enrolled. Click the
Save
button when finished. 5.) Your application will be reviewed, and you will receive an email confirmation when it has been approved. You can then begin the process of inducting students who have met the induction requirements (see instructions below). Within 23 weeks of approval, you will receive a Chapter Certificate in the mail. FOR CURRENT NHSDA CHAPTERS: In December, a Chapter Type Survey was sent out to all current NHSDA Chapters via emails and the NHSDA Forum. If you responded to this survey, your chapter information was uploaded to the new website, and you were sent a username and password along with a separate email from me with instructions on accessing your account. You can begin the process of inducting students. If you did not respond to the survey, you will need to fill out the simple Chapter Application on the new website (see above). This will activate your chapter in our new system. Once the Chapter is approved, you can begin the process of inducting students. All current NHSDA Chapters will be assigned a new chapter number as part of a national numbering system. An important new feature of the induction system is that students will need to apply for induction at the NHSDA website before being inducted.
They will enter their name, basic contact information, and grade level on their application. This will ease the workload of the chapter sponsor, help us maintain the integrity of our record of inducted students, and ensure that names are spelled correctly on induction certificates. www.nhsdandeo.org
and click on
Find Your Chapter 2.) Read the instructions provided on the page, then click the

You will need to log in with the Institutional Membership username and password for the NDEO website to complete the payment for NHSDA Induction Fees (Certificates), Pins, and Honor Cords.
If you do not have access to this information, you can call the NDEO Home Office at 3015852880 to pay by credit card, or send a check made payable to NDEO to: National Dance Education Organization, 8609 Second Ave, Suite 203B, Silver Spring MD 20910. MORE IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Remember that your school must maintain its
NDEO Institutional Membership
for as long as it intends to sponsor an NHSDA Chapter. Your NHSDA account is tied to the NDEO Institutional Membership. If your membership in NDEO expires, you will need to renew the membership in order to access your NHSDA account and induct students. With new system, the Chapter Sponsor listed on the NHSDA website may or may not be the contact person for the NDEO Institutional Membership. However, the Chapter Sponsor will need to have access to the NDEO Institutional Membership login information for
www.ndeo.org
in order to pay for induction fees and NHDSA Merchandise online. For example, the studio owner or department chair may be the contact person for the NDEO Institutional Account, but another faculty member may be listed as the Chapter Sponsor on the NHSDA site and access that account. (Please note that designation on the NHSDA website does not entitle you to NDEO member benefits such as access to online forums, OPDI courses, or conference attendance. If you are interested in these benefits, you will need to have an NDEO Professional Membership or be listed as the contact person on the NDEO Institutional Membership for the school.) The updated Chapter Sponsor Handbooks will be available at
www.nhsdandeo.org
and posted to the NHSDA Forum. Please take a few moments to review the new handbooks for an indepth look at the program changes. A summary of the changes to the NHSDA program for 2016 is as follows: 1. All NHSDA inquiries can be directed to Shannon Dooling, the new Director of NHSDA, at
[email protected]
. Melissa Greenblatt is moving on to a new role overseeing all of NDEO’s programs and services. 2. A new website will be launched specifically for NHSDA, where Chapter Sponsors in all 50 states can induct students and order pins and cords. This website will be linked to
www.ndeo.org
so payment can be processed online through the school’s NDEO Institutional Membership, or a check sent to the NDEO Home Office. 3. A Junior NHSDA Program is being instituted for students in grades 68. Schools can choose to have a Junior Chapter, a Secondary Chapter, or both, depending on the ages of students served. Only one NDEO Institutional Membership will be required, even if the school is setting up a junior and secondary program. The Collegiate program will still be available for colleges and universities that offer dance coursework for credit. 4. A GPA of at least 3.0 out of 4.0 will be required for induction in all NHSDA programs. Schools can continue to determine whether this GPA requirement must be met in the students’ overall coursework or their dance coursework only. Thank you for your patience during the transition to the new NHSDA website and induction system. If you have any questions, I highly recommend that you email me at [email protected]
, and we can set up a followup phone call if needed. This will allow me to best track the questions and concerns that come to us, and provide quality customer service. Warmly, Shannon Dooling Director of NHSDA
