The lake of Garda:
Geography
Lake Garda (Italian: Lago di Garda or Lago Benaco) is the largest lake in Italy. It is a popular
holiday location and is located in Northern Italy, about half-way between Brescia and
Verona, and between Venice and Milan. Glaciers formed this alpine region at the end of the last
Ice Age. The lake and its shoreline are divided between the provinces of Verona (to the
south-east), Brescia (south-west), and Trentino (north).
The northern part of the lake is located in a depression that creeps in NE-SW in the Alps, while the
southern part occupies an area of high Po valley which stands out so suddenly and a foothill valley,
the first of a narrow and elongated shape, the second large, semicircular. Another feature is the
limited catchment area (2,290 square kilometers) than the surface of the lake: the lake is 52 km
long, the river basin 95, the lake is 16 km wide at most, the basin 42 (it's normal maximum width to
length both cases). The lake is located 65 m above sea level, and its maximum depth is 365 m.
The watershed of the eastern catchment has a direction parallel to the axis of the lake, while the
West has a more sinuous. Within the basin the major peaks are Cima Presanella (3556 m) and
Mount Adamello (3554 m), even though most of the area is between 65 and 1500 m.
Morphologically the Garda basin can be divided into four areas: the plain of about 200 square
kilometers, the lake surface of 370 square kilometers, the western portion of 500 km² and Eastern of
1040 km².
The river Sarca is the main tributary of the 25 tributaries (including the river Aril, which with its
175 meters in length is considered the shortest river in the world [4]). The only outlet of the lake is
the river Mincio.
The lake waters cover several towns in the province of Brescia (Sirmione, Desenzano, Lonato,
Padenghe sul Garda, Moniga, Manerba del Garda, San Felice, Salò, Gardone Riviera, ToscolanoMaderno, Gargnano , Tignale, Tremosine, Limone sul Garda), in the province of Verona (Peschiera
del Garda, Castelnuovo del Garda, Lazise, Bardolino, Garda, Torri del Benaco, Brenzone,
Malcesine) and in the province of Trento (Riva del Garda, Torbole )
In the lake there are five islands: the larger the Garda Island on which stands a beautiful nineteenth
century building in eighteenth-century Venetian style, and near this the second, the island of San
Biagio, also called "the Rabbit", which It is about 200 meters from the coast (walking distance in
dry periods). Both are located near San Felice del Benaco, Salo to Brescia on the coast.
Another island, the third largest, is the Island Trimelone famous for being a powder keg on which
there were collected unexploded ordnance of the first and second world wars. The other two,
smaller, are the island's Dream, also in dry periods within walking distance from the coast is located
just 20 meters (peninsula of the dream), and the Isle of Olives. There are also many other rocks,
especially among the islands of the Garda and San Biagio, which depending on the season are more
or less emerging and which are appropriately marked as a hazard to navigation.
To the south of Lake Garda, between Verona, Mantova and Brescia, it developes a large
amphitheater moraine, or a circle of moraine hills and undulating surfaces created by ancient
glaciers during the Pleistocene. These areas, inhabited since prehistoric times, are areas of great
natural beauty, with vegetation typical of the Mediterranean climate (olives, grapes, fruit, agaves
and other plants), thanks to the microclimate created by the Garda basin, which makes the mild
winter (this, among other things, favors the wintering of several species of birds).
Cattle, horse sports, and other animals, to give it a bucolic hilly landscape: born during the spring
5
wild flowers such as primroses, irises, violets and lilies, while in summer blooming some varieties
of orchids grow wild. Moreover, thanks to protected areas hares and small wild mammals,
waterfowl and raptors survive, and ponds and ditches are filled with pike, carp and eels. Particularly
interesting is the birdlife, thanks to the presence of the heron and red heron, night heron, the bittern,
the little egret and many species of ducks (eg teal and mallard). These hills are also an important
crossroads for numerous migratory species of prey, and they also see the presence of insect-eating
species, which tend to live only in pristine environments.
In the area there are various protected areas (the main ones are the Mincio Park and the nature
reserve of Castellaro Lagusello) and some parks and gardens of great importance.
The great basin of Lake mitigates semi-continental climate of the Po Valley and the first Alpine
valleys, making it relaxed the mild winter and the less oppressive summer heat. There would still be
an even local variations: the effects of the lake usually remain very close to the coast, while already
a few hundred meters from it these are mitigated. The effect, however, is always dependent on the
regime of breezes, so even very close locations may have considerably different temperatures.
For example, the east-west coastal areas affected by the mitigating full of water, while other areas
such as the Upper Garda Trentino and the areas close to the Po Valley see the effects of the lake
somewhat mitigated by several factors, especially in winter . The areas most myths of Lake Garda
can be identified with the west coast (Limone sul Garda, Gardone Riviera, Salo) and the area of
Desenzano del Garda-Sirmione. Cooler is the lower eastern shore (Bardolino-Peschiera del Garda),
which is most exposed to the cold air masses present over the countryside and the surrounding
plains, and high Garda Trentino, influenced by the bearing of cold air this winter in the basin of
Riva del Garda -Arco.
Directly on the coast average winter maximum temperatures are not much different from those of
the surrounding areas, while it is mainly the average minimum and absolute winter to be milder and
to allow the development of the characteristic vegetation mixed with essences both local and semiMediterranean or Mediterranean . A good "thermometer" natural to evaluate the winter on Lake
Garda in the various zones may be the presence and state of growth of the palms Phoenix
Canariensis: these palms have problems of frost on average below -7 ° C / -8 ° C and therefore,
while Salo, Gardone and Toscolano you can also find many old specimens of 70-80 years and 10-20
meters high, in Peschiera, Garda or Riva-Arco these palms are very rare and are found only at the
lakefront.
The main winds of Lake Garda are:
* Peler: wind is a constant characteristic of Lake Garda, coming from the north and that affects
almost the entire lake, especially the upper and middle Garda. Blows from the first hours of the
night (2-3) until about noon (11-12) and is strengthened after the sunrise because of the temperature
rise. In the eastern part of the middle Garda it is a bit 'stronger and in summer can reach speeds up
to 15 m / s resulting in the formation of waves. It is exploited for windsurfing as many fans that
come out at dawn near Limone or Malcesine.
* Time: from the Latin aura that is "breath", is a valley breeze coming from the Po Valley that blows
from the south shortly after the fall of the Peler (12-13) until the afternoon. It affects significantly
6
the medium and especially the high garda where gains speed by Venturi effect, due to the particular
"funnel" of the lake and surrounding mountains; the Garda Lake is usually not effected, especially
in the summer months. It is less intense than the Peler and dell'Ander, usually reaches a speed
between 5-6 m / s, although in the summer months, which is more intense, it can reach speeds of
10-12 m / s rise to a significant wave especially in the high Garda. Is exploited in the afternoon
hours from catamarans, windsurfing and sailing boats sailing in the waters up to Torbole.
* Ponal is a typical summer wind and intensive. Blowing from the valley of Ledro in the morning
hours and in the evening following the wake of Ponale from which it derives its name.
* Bali, Balin, Balinot or Spisoca is a wind coming from the north typical winter, it originated from a
sharp drop in temperature often due to heavy snowfalls. It can reach speeds of up to 20 m / s and
result in a heavy swell.
* Ander is a constant wind coming from the South-West that blows in the early afternoon and lasts
only for a few hours affecting especially the Lower Garda. Sometimes it can be as high up and blow
Garda at night. It can reach speeds of up to 10 m / s resulting in irregular waves especially from
mid-lake up.
* Vinesa is a constant wind coming from East and South-East blowing from the Verona side to that
of Brescia. It is due to disturbances in the northern Adriatic in progress or onset of Bora; if so,
whether the sky to the east south-east of Peschiera becomes dark, it heralds the arrival of this wind
chich brings bearer of bad weather. It can be very dangerous because of its strength and the wave
that originates.
* Boaren or Boarno is a land breeze from Vobarno (hence the name) in Val Sabbia and that blows in
the morning or in the evening from West North-West coming from the Gulf of Salò and the Peler
away from the Gulf of Toscolano-Maderno . It varies in intensity with a maximum speed that can
reach 5.6 m / s but usually is weak and therefore can not lick the Verona side will cause waves. It is
a wind that usually brings good weather.
* Gardesana is a wind blowing from Garda to the direction of Sirmione among 8.00 O'Clock pm.
* Visentina is originated by a wind storm that descends from San Vigilio affecting the lower Garda.
* Fasanella is a steady wind, usually of low intensity, which is formed in the early afternoon west of
Fasano (fraz. Gardone Riviera) and blow eastwards until sunset, even reaching the low Garda. It can
also be channeled upwards Garda and gain strength for the Venturi effect, giving rise to wave from
Tignale. It is typical of the summer, it brings nice weather and makes the lake of blue-green.
History
In 243 in Garda occured the first earthquake recorded by historical sources, a legend has it that it
was a real disaster and the consequences were so disastrous that the city of Benacus disappeared in
the waters of the lake (this city was located where now stands Toscolano ). The Isle of Garda
originated in that period, when as a result of the disaster broke away from the nearby coast of San
Felice.
A few years later, in 268, near Garda the battle of Lake Benaco was foughtamong the army of the
Roman Empire, commanded by the future emperor Claudius Gothic, and the German federation of
the Germans. The overwhelming victory by the Romans marked the beginning of the resumption of
the empire after the crisis of the third century, but it was not enough to curb the Germanic invasion
into Italy.
In 568 to 569, the Lombards occupied northern Italy, and therefore the area of the lake, although
their testimonies are mostly in Sirmione and Garda, perhaps because the city strategically important
and already equipped with fortifications. The lake was on the border of three powerful duchies,
those of Verona, Trento and Brescia, and was at the center of a major communications network,
both commercial and military. In 963 Emperor Otto Ist conquered Garda, where they had fled the
7
sons of the king of Italy Berengario II, while at the beginning of the eleventh century after his
successor on the imperial throne, Henry II, created the county Garda.
In the thirteenth century the bloody struggles between Guelphs and Ghibellines became even
harsher, and some evidence suggests that the cities of the lower lake and the western shore lined up
in favor of the Ghibellines, even to defend its independence from Brescia, which was Instead one of
the cornerstones of Guelph. In 1207 the Montecchi (Ghibelline family of Verona) were beaten in
Verona by Sambonifacio, and so also the Gardesana (the eastern bank) was directly involved in the
civil war waged by factions Verona (which by the way would take following the rise the Lordship
of the Scala). Heads of families of Montecchi were driven from the city by Sambonifacio, and were
forced to take refuge in the castle of Garda, and then in that of Peschiera del Garda, where they
were put under siege, were captured just two years later, and were handed over to the Emperor Otto
IV. Since then, the strength of the Montecchi was not (although they remained in Verona, until the
expulsion implemented by Cangrande I della Scala for attempting to seize power with Federico
della Scala).
According to tradition in the twenties of the thirteenth century St. Francis of Assisi founded a
monastery on the island of Garda. In 1276 Mastino I della Scala and Alberto I della Scala organized
an expedition against Sirmione, where there was a substantial community of Cathar heretics and
Patareni, to remove from Verona papal excommunication. During this period he claimed Lordship
Scala, which would have left many testimonies in residential areas of the lake (especially, but not
only, in the eastern shore).
In 1387 eastern Garda was occupied by Visconti, but in 1405 it passed into the hands of the
Venetian Republic, with the dedication of Verona to Venice, while the western side is afflicted by a
new struggle between the Ghibellines and Guelph. Twenty years later, in 1426, the Visconti lose
Brescia (and thus the western shore of the lake) passing into the hands of Venice, in this case
through dedication: the 34 municipalities Benacensi obtained by the Serenissima wide autonomy,
and in Saló It establishes the superintendent of the Coast. The war returned to the bloody waters
gardensi in 1438, because of the war between Venice and Milan: an exceptional event, remembered
as Galeas for Montes was the passage of a fleet of twenty-six galleys and ships, on the slopes of
Mount Baldo , pulled by oxen 2,000. This fleet sailed on the Adige and came almost to Rovereto,
from where he was transported to the lake Garda by road through the valley of Lake Loppio (the
trip took 15 days). The fleet was used in the lake to counter that of Milan, and had its greatest
success in an important battle at Riva del Garda, which forced the city to surrender. La Serenissima,
the Napoleonic armies and the Austro-Hungarian Empire The Venetian Republic ruled the lake for
four centuries
In 1508 it is the League of Cambrai (which also has designs on the Garda region) against the
Republic of Venice: Venice strengthens the castles of domains Mainland, including those of Salò
and Padenghe, and send galleys on to the lake, as well as building new ones directly on Lake Garda,
in the arsenal of Lazise. The Venetian lost part of their domains, but these were recovered in 1512,
when Salo returned to administration. In 1516 Maximilian came to Italy, and the Riviera was back
again in German hands. Soon, however, they returned the territories to Venetian hands.
For a long time the territory was not directly affected by war: only in 1701 it became involved in
8
the War of the Spanish Succession, when Spanish and French positioned themselves in Brescia
valleys and on Mount Baldo, in order to stop the descent of the imperial troops. Three years later,
some areas are occupied by imperial troops, but to no avail sending ambassadors from the
Serenissima, which had remained neutral. Indeed, during the stay of troops from France and
Germany, there were several clashes, and population centers were repeatedly bombarded by ships.
In 1786 Johann Wolfgang von Goethe stops in Torbole and Malcesine, while ten years later the lake
is involved in the Napoleonic wars: at the end of May, the French advance to the lake and buy the
30 defeat the Austrians at Borghetto sul Mincio and Peschiera win. In late July they are defeated the
French, who must retire over Salo, which was occupied by the Austrians. They are held so many
new clashes between opponents on the battlefield of Lake Garda. The following year the French
occupied well Mantua, while Brescia valleys and the Riviera happens, although the Venetian
Republic maintains its neutral status, and does not send aid to the rescue. Verona organized
independently of expeditions against the centers occupied by the French, but they are defeated and
must retreat to Verona, where on April 17 the anti-French riots so called Veronese Easters. Begun on
October 17, however, the Treaty of Campo Formio is signed: the French on the south-western
shores, while the Austrians nor-eastern ones. In 1799 the war continues along the lake, with
incursions from the water, and the following year the Riviera is back in French hands.
In 1815, with the Restoration, it founded the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia, and the entire region
Gardens, are back in Austrian hands. Wars of Independence
The first war of independence is also felt on Lake Garda in Salò some Austrian soldiers are taken
prisoner, and the next day the Austrian insignia was demolished. The Austrian army is forced to
withdraw on the line of the Mincio to the advancing troops from Piedmont, but, after the defeat of
Piedmont Custoza, there is signing of an armistice, which returns to the situation before the war.
Salo, 19 June 1859. The batteries Piedmont sink a steamboat Austrian Lake Garda.
In 1859 the War of Independence began and, on June 18, the hunters of the Alps are able to get to
Salo, but Garibaldi has to move troops in Brescia valleys. Shortly after being fought the Battle of
Solferino, which was won by Franco-Savoy, but with the Armistice of Villafranca finished the war,
and Garda becomes the border, in this case between Italians and Austrians. In 1866 began the third
war of independence, and Garibaldi back to Salo. This time is forced to move and takes refuge in
Trentino. Despite the humiliating defeat Italian for sea and land, the Veneto is delivered to the
Kingdom of Italy.
During the First World War fighting is on the high Garda, along the line of the north Baldo, and on
the 23 July, the first aerial bombardment (hit Riva del Garda) tokes place, the second on August 10
(the affected Malcesine), the third on October 25 (Riva del Garda). The following year, artillery is
installed also cableways, and on February 20 Riva is hit again. New bombing strikes Desenzano,
Nago and Torbole. In 1918 Riva it is bombed again, while the battles continue on Baldo. Limone
and are subsequently bombed, yet again, also Riva, but with the end of the war also the Trentino
shore passes into Italian hands.
Until 1943 the Second World War hits in particular the region of the lake, but since September 15
the German High Command was installed in Limone, while on October 10 Benito Mussolini settled
in Gargnano, and so was born the so-called Republic of Salo (or more properly "Italian Social
Republic "). A first heavy bombardment hit the railway viaduct in Desenzano del Garda, while
being hit by planes the post office of Torri and antiaircraft emplacements of Malcesine. They are
then made bombing of population centers along the Verona side. In 1945 you can "see" the sky
fighting between hunting Anglo-American and Italian-German

Garda City
Garda is a comune on the shore of Lake Garda, in the province of Verona, region of Veneto,
Northeastern Italy. It is one of the more characteristic towns on the east Coast of the
homonymous biggest lake in Italy: the Lake of Garda. Garda is only 32 kilometres (20 miles)
from the city of Verona, and is one of the smallest towns in the whole province.

Many Villas are in the center of Garda and the historical Villa degli Albertini (16th century) with
its magnolia trees.
In the Garda's square of Piazza dei Capitani, or square Catullo, has a Venetian style of the fifteenth
century, as the building that is on it, the Palace of the Captains. In the fourteenth century this
building was overlooking a marina, and everything was under water. Subsequently, the space for the
square was filled in, to give birth to the beautiful square that is now the Piazza dei Capitani.

Palazzo Carlotti in Renaissance style.
Villa Canossa - XVIII century.
Palazzo Cesare Fregoso - XVI century with his mistery...
At the end of the village in Bardolino direction the 18th-century parochial church
dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary appear in all her majesty.
This church originally dates from the 6th-7 th century. A new church was built in 1530 by Gian
Matteo Giberti but, because lack of funds, the construction was only concluded in 1764. The
framework of the doors are made in white Veronese stone.(1824). The interior consists of three
aisles. The eastern side rest on six heavy columns, the southern side on four lighter ones. They are
all connected by round arches. The statues of S. Peter and S. Paul were made by the Veronese
sculptor Righetti (1886). The large wooden crucifix dates from the 14th-15th century. It is
considered the most precious item in the church. Behind the crucifix one can see the edict of Pope
Innocent II (November 1138) resolving the allocation of tithes. The side altar of Saint Anthony
of Padua dates from 1720. The altarpiece was painted by Simone Brentani (1720) and the statues in
Carrara marble represent San Fabiano and San Sebastiano. The two confessionals (17th century) in
walnut timber with wood carving and intaglio were made in the workshop of Andrea Brustolon
(Rococo style). The side altar (1648) in the "Capella dei Caduti" contains the wooden statue
"Madonna and Child" (Veronese style - 15th century). In the right aisle is located the side altar with
the painting of San Luigi Gonzaga and San Vincenzo Ferreri by Gaspare Diziani (1764). The
baptismal font dates from the17th century. For a long time it was the only baptismal font in the
neighbourhood. The main altar dates from mid 16th century and stands in front of the organ (1958).
Behind the altar on the wall one can see a painting of the Assumption of Mary (17th century).
Cloister of the church - the tenth century. The Pieve of Garda is one of the oldest in the area,
because in sec. X had a chapter of canons belonging to common life, as well as clerics located in
Torri del Benaco and Bardolino. In 1522 it was joined to the Maggiore Hospital of Brescia.
Dedicated to St. Mary, the church was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1117 and then modified and
modernized in 1824. The church tower was built in 1571. The medieval construction of the church
traces remain walled up in the bell tower and cloister.
Hermitage of the Camaldolesi - XV century, is situated on the rear side of the Old Rock mountain.
Church of St. Stefano - the seventeenth century. The church of Santo Stefano is next to the road
through the village, next to the stream of SS. Trinity. There was certainly before 1687, date carved
on an outside wall. In 1877 he was raised and restored.
Church of Santa Maria Assunta - XVIII century

Beaches:
Two Beaches are in Garda. On the northern side, at the end of the village, in the Torri del Benaco
direction there are the Corno beach. On the southern side, at the end of the village, in the Bardolino
direction is the a La Cavalla beach. If the nortern one has dirty wather be sure thath southern one
has clean and to the contrary if southern has dirty water, the northern is limpid.
Garda Festivals:
* Bisse Regatta, rowing regatta organized by the Lega Bisse del Garda. Stage the championship of
the Bisse, using traditional Venetian rowing boats, this is held between June and August each year.
The boat which wins the championship trophy will get the flag of the lake;
* Palio of the Assumption, is in mid-August. At night, the race has eight boats with Venetian
rowing. The differences from other traditional regatta on Lake Garda, where you use the repeats, in
this using eight fiberglass boats made for the race. Gondolas are made flat in the tradition of ancient
fishing boats. The vogue is four, standing as usual in the country. At stake is the statue of the Virgin
that will be kept for a year by the winner who is one of eight historic districts of the country. To
remember that August is the patron;
* International Meeting Point, a meeting now historic gathering at the beginning of each summer
more than 150 cars and 350 fans of the legendary Berlinetta from Fiat. Organised by Punto Racing
Club - Official Club Fiat in collaboration with the town of Garda, since 2002 gathers fans from
Italy, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Hungary and the Netherlands that animate the Lakefront
Europe by filling it with a thousand colors.
* Soirée on Garda Music Festival. It held at the AFFI, July and August, with music by Antonio
Vivaldi, with wine tasting in the Garda.
The old Rock of Garda
South of the city of Garda there is the hill of the Fortress where once stood the castle. The name
comes from the Germanic word and therefore Lombard werta, or fortress, guards, the castle. The
fortress in fact enjoyed a time of great fame of impregnability, but unfortunately today is defunct.
Perhaps the same lake that was born with the name of Benacus in memory of the town of Benaco
that following an earthquake ended up submerged, and became the lake "Garda" in memory of the
fortress which for many years has defended him. Garda after all also means in italian “Guarda” and
the translation is Look.
The old rock mountan stands 300 m over the town and offers visitors a wonderful sight over the
whole lake, over the same rise it is located the 15th century Carmelite monastery.
12
San Vigilio
The name of the village comes from Saint Vigilius (San Vigilio), the Bishop of Trento from 385
to 402 A.D. It became famous in 1540 when Agostino Brenzoni built his villa within a
small park. Many famous people have stayed at the Brenzoni Villa, including Tsar Alexander, the
King of Naples, Winston Churchill, Laurence Olivier, King Juan Carlos and the British royal
family.
The peninsula of San Vigilio, on which the villa formerly stood, was described by Riccardo
Bacchelli as "the most radiant, airy place." The villa was built in the 16th century for Count
Agostino Brenzoni and the designer was Michele Sammicheli (1484-1559).

"The Crocodile in the water": just in front of the main square it will appear.
This doesn't need much of an explanation. Crocodile Rock is a small hill that separates Garda from
the next town, apropriatly named because of its shape.

Between history and legend
Much about Garda has been written and said on Lake Garda: poets and writers from around the
world sang and mythologized the landscape, enhancing the evocative magic of the waters and
mountains that surround it with legends and fairy tales of particular beauty.
Mysterious night
According to the poet benacense Floriani, Lake Garda has origin in a mysterious night, when some
angels came down to earth and filled with deep blue water a great desert valley, donated to the
banks of flowers and gardens, left on the water a fleet of sails colorful and then, between hymns and
songs of glory, disappeared into Heaven, to write on the Golden Book which on that night was born
on Lake Garda.
The Myth
Numerous tales of mythological inspiration, linked to the presence of the Romans and their pagan
myths, however, take us back to the nymphs, dryads and other mythical figures to justify the name
of some places of Garda: the name of the lake itself, for example, as reported by the Lenotti text
"Legends of Garda", would seem to come from the name of the nymph Garda, daughter of the river
Benaco, who was married to the river Sarca, in exchange for the merger of the waters of the two
rivers and the formation of a large lake like sea. The same myth explains the origin of the river
Mincio, born from the union of the nymph Garda and the Sarca and the divine origin of the poet
Virgil, in turn the son of Mincio and the nymph Maia, illustrious lineage and famous for its beauty.
Some of these legends, legends over time have been accepted as common knowledge and thus, the
rock of the Star, placed in front of San Vigilio, derives from the love of God unfortunatly Vigilio
and the nymph Stella; Island Trimelone (located off the country's absence), however, remind the
two older brothers "tremuloni", admired everywhere for their touching brotherly love and goodness,
which were swallowed up by the waves of the lake and transformed by the gods in two rocks close
together, united by an underwater ridge; carp striped "pride of the Garda", would be a gift of the god
Saturn, while the god Benaco fishermen recive the sardene, "fish of providence."
14
Queen Adelaide and her legendary escape.
In the fortress over the old rock of Garda the wedding of Queen Teodolinda took place.
While in 950 Queen Adelaide of Burgundy, widow of Lothair II, was held captive in the fortress of
Berenger II.
Adelaide, daughter of Rudolph II of Burgundy and Berta of Alemannia, had to marry at age 16 for
reasons of political alliances, Lothar II, king of Italy in 947. Since a very young queen was a very
popular because, being a convinced Christian , it is dedicated entirely to the help of the poor and
marginalized. Unfortunately, three years later, Lothair was poisoned as a result of a conspiracy,
organized by Berengario II, who wanted to force Adelaide to marry his son Adalbert, because to
become the new king. The queen refused and for this reason it was made imprisoned in the fortress.
Here starts the legend of escaping. Adelaide was especially popular with the poor, and so was
helped by them. It was just a fisherman and a monk who freed her from captivity, almost like a
metaphor for Jesus (fisherman) and St. Peter (monk), managed by Hun ploy to make her escape
deeper into the night. The legend continues with Adelaide escaping to the house of the fisherman,
just outside the southern wall of the village to rest herself till the sunrise. But during the night the sir
of the castle discovered the escape and mobilized all the guards. Adelaide, was woken by the monk
and the fisherman ready to leave Garda with a silent boat. Unfortunatly she slipped on the stairs of
the old house and and he banged his head on a stone set into the wall in the courtyard in front of the
stairs. In this moment became the santity of the queen and broke the stone instead the head of
Adelaide.
How Adelaide escaped from Garda and reached the house of Lady Canossa of Mantova without
being discovered no one kows, but is still commonly called the cave of Cesiol, sited under the Old
Rock of Garda, as: “cave of Adelaide”, in memory of Adelaide and her mythical escape route.
There are a strange rock placed on the plateau of the Old Rock above Garda that is remembered as
the chair of the Queen Adelaide.
So caught secretly, without being captured, the city of Canossa with her daughter Emma (who later
married Lothair of France). He managed in this way to meet the Emperor of the Holy Roman
Empire, Otto I, to whom he told everything that had happened. The sovereign impressed by the
tenacity and courage of this woman, who was also very cultured because he spoke four languages,
fell madly in love and with the strength of a lion went to Italy, defeated Berengar II and exiled him,
avenging Adelaide and assumed Crown of the Kingdom of Italy. Returning winner hugged his
beloved and married her on Christmas Eve of 951. They had later than 4 children.
The fame of Adelaide grew enormously, especially in the 973 to the death of Otto, when she
became Queen of the Holy Roman Empire, with full decision-making power behind the facade of
his son Otto II married a Byzantine princess named Theophane. After his early death, he ruled
jointly with the widow, this time behind the presence of Otto III, still a minor. It was these two
women to rule the Empire.
Adelaide always maintained its momentum Christian and devoted himself to the welfare and care of
the poor with the founding of churches, monasteries and convents. When Otto III became
independent she retired to the convent, and died in northern Alsace total prayer in 999. He became
15
holy.
There is a poem by Berto Barbarani is reminiscent of this great woman:
Lago da I'aqua fresca o celestina
de le fontane che te sbrissia dentro,
lago de Garda da la recia fina
che te senti tremar le vele al vento
e i limonari quando i se inchina
zo da le rive a farte complimento,
l'èto vista scapar quela regina
che i aveva impresonado a tradimento?
The fortress then took a form of impregnable fortress as soon Turisendao, fondatario Gardesana, he
managed between 1162 and 1163 to withstand a year of siege conducted by the same Barbarossa!
Unfortunately it was demolished by Otto IV after opening the Municipality in 1209. The reason is
unknown. Maybe he wanted to further avenge the prison of his great ancestor.
Alessandra Carlotti Canossa and Gabriele D'Annunzio.
A curiosity ... .. In the Villa Alessandra Carlotti Canossa there are a tale among Alessandra
Parlotti di Rudinì, a widow, she had an affair with Gabriele D'Annunzio, but that was very
unfortunate.
Alessandra di Rudinì - She was born in Naples on October 5, 1876. His mother began to form it in
Christianity but died suddenly full of pain and Alexandria, plunged into a social life which emerged
as rebellious and independent man. At the college, for example, he poured ink in the holy water so
Collegial mothers during evening prayers had hands completely black! He combined many other
until is it was finally expelled from college. At fifteen years old in all his beauty, he was very tall,
with a face very beautiful with blond hair and intense blue eyes. He was also educated and
intelligent so dominated with charm and conversation in every living room. The bride's father
dreamed of some sovereign but she would not hear of it and was able to marry the one who was
really in love, Marquis Marcello Carlotti of Verona who did not miss anything. He had two sons
who grew up in a beautiful villa on Lake Garda. Unfortunately in 1900, when Alexandra was only
twenty-four, Marcellus died of tuberculosis. She suffered a lot to but to no avail trips that made to
be a father to distract except in Morocco where he met a magician was struck by a premonition
rather unique ... "You'll have everything," he said "absolutely everything, wealth, beauty and
devotion, suffering, poverty and sadness ... you already own it all! In order to spend the light of
happiness you will first have to have it all. " She was dismayed and never forgot those words. In
1903 he attended the wedding of his brother and there he met the poet Gabriele D'Annunzio, who
16
was engaged despite Eleonora Duse, the left because you fell in love with the beautiful and cultured
Alessandra and became engaged. In 1906, however, he became seriously ill and was made even
three times. In these terrible moments he was abandoned by the father of D'Annunzio that cowardly
left her to go with another woman Amaranta. He felt such suffering and locked himself in Villa
Carlotti in Verona where the only friend he had was a priest, Abbot Gorel, chaplain of the villa. He
tried to stay with her very close, showing Jesus and the Gospels and advising a pilgrimage to
Lourdes. Alessandra went there alone in the car! In Lourdes he experienced the limit of the mystic,
he saw a blind woman regain her sight, he saw a lot of suffering but so much hope reflected in the
eyes of the Madonna, where he saw the light, the truth. Back at the villa of Verona he decided to
take Jesus as is absolute and eternal companion, he spent every day in silence and prayer. In 1911 at
thirty-five became Sister Mary of Jesus.
The birthplace of the story of Romeo and Juliet.
A curiosity concerns the Palazzo Fregoso, here probably the story of Romeo and Juliet, you know,
does not really exist but families insisted yes. In Garda lived for centuries family Montecchi, till the
final victory of guelphs that impose to Montecchi, the ghibelins faction, to leave all the shore of
Garda lake, includind the city of Garda.
We have a lot of evidence in Garda that would to prove the paternity of the great poem: a castle, a
Montecchi family against guelphs family, houses and palaces and... The sentence that is written on
the gable of Palazzo Fregoso is: "Virtue is still alive." remember the poem. Just in front of the door
of palazzo fregoso you can take a look of the Juliet's (?) balcony...
The mystery still exist.
The monster of Lake Garda.
Monster or no monster, "we like to imagine, real or fantastic it is, as a guardian spirit of the lake
which came to save him and defend him from those who poison its water and by those who would
turn it into a huge pool from the edges of cement ". So Armando Bellelli, the scientist of the
mystery (known in the news for the discovery of Sercol or for the defense of the church of San
Sivino) between the coordinators of the 'mission' in search of the legendary Mystery Bennie with
the transmission of Italy One, the 'Benacosaurus 'which for centuries lives in the banks and the
depth of Lake Garda, spotted even in the sixteenth century by the monks of the island of San Felice
and, as the historian Grattarolo, "terrified of what lived there, in these mysterious caves".
Toscolano monster del Garda was seen, for the first time in photography "The last 'alarm' was
launched by Edward Castaldelli, directly on the Facebook group titled obviously 'Bennie the
monster of Lake Garda'. At 23.50 on May 24, he announces his personal discovery with a post: "I
17
was photographing the lake from Cecina (fraction of Toscolano), when they are taken in a dark
shape appeared, like those seen on 'Google Image' of monster. I'm sure it is not a boat, or a wave or
a fish is checked just at the click of the photo. Maurizio Mosca instead, an expert in cryptozoology,
analyzed the image and sayed: "I seem to see a big head with two side fins and a short neck
narrower." And the 'fever' monster of the new rooms. The last sightings were recorded in between
2012 and 2013: the last in November, when Bennie would have been seen at the Bay of the Sirens,
In Garda at the Verona side.
Researchers also the Deep Explorers Toscolano have detected a fault underwater, to 270 meters
deep, sonar that responds as it should, and a new survey with new surveys, and alleged that the rock
would move, almost like he life of its own. It is not impossible to reconstruct a historical sighting,
and the highlight of the mid-60s you add newer ones, until the diver to Reggio Emilia that just over
12 years ago would have even hit him with a harpoon that of first impression It seemed "giant eel".

Tipical products
The area around Lake Garda offers a large selection of quality products – Enjoy fine wines, olive oil
“extra vergine D.O.P.”, liqueurs, truffles, citrus fruits and freshwater fish from Italy.
Lake Garda is an ideal destination for lovers of gourmet food and fine wines. The area influence the
culinary traditions due to their many landscapes and cultural characteristics.
Extra virgin olive oil D.O.P.
A typical product of the holiday region Lake Garda is the olive oil „extra vergine D.O.P.“, a slight
fruity and delicate oil with a low percentage of acid which completes every Mediterranean dish. The
oil is cultivated in the whole area which has relatively small temperature variations thanks to the
mild climate and is therefore particularly suitable for the growth of the olive trees.
Wines.
Numerous vineyards, where fine wines and popular all over the world are produced which are
spread over the hills around Lake Garda. The best known wines of the region are the Bardolino, a
light, palatable red wine which harmonizes with every dish, the Valpolicella, the Amarone, Nosiola,
Bianco di Custoza, Lugana, Garda and the Vino Santo Trentino. For more information we
recommend you to visit the wine museum in Bardolino and a trip through the picturesque
cultivation areas.
26
Truffle.
Another typical product of the local gastronomy is the truffle, which grows on the mountainside of
Monte Baldo, on the moraine hills and on the eastern shore of Lake Garda.
Citrus.
Lemons, oranges, limes, mandarins, tangerines and bergamots are cultivated at the western
shore of Lake Garda. Citrus fruits are an important ingredient for the preparation of several typical
specialties of the region as well as for liqueurs and delicious sweets.
Cuisine.
The traditional cuisine of Lake Garda is based on regional natural products. The lake offers more
than twenty five species of fish, among them the carp and the trout which are particularly
noteworthy. Taste typical fish specialties and fine wines in the restaurants and taverns at Lake
Garda.
Fish, olive oil, wine are the three typical products of Lake Garda and it is on these three pillars that
hold the Garda cuisine: fish, and could not be otherwise, it is the basis. From the waters of the lake
come several varieties (species are over thirty), some native, others placed by man. The most prized
native fish is carpione, a salmonid that is only found in the waters of Lake Garda. He 'a fish tender
meat and delicate flavor, once destined for the table of the aristocrats, who can cook "boiled" or
"grilled", topped with a drizzle of olive oil Garda.
The other valuable fish of Lake Garda is the trout, with which it is possible a wide variety of
recipes, baked, fried, marinated or grilled trout is the top dish. At Casa Lady Garda Trattoria we
serve stuffed in owen with a variety of wild mushrooms.
On the grid are usually cooked lavaret, sardines, eel.
The small lake fish “alleat”, better known as the lake "aola", it occupies an important place in the
recipes of Garda. The "aola" fries have always been the quintessential dish on the tables of
fishermen washed and dried, are made flour and fry in a large pan of hot oil.
Aole, also sun-dried and preserved in salt, are another typical dish called "aole salệ". Through this
procedure they resist for a long time, for which they can be consumed directly or used in the
preparation of sauces, even after a few months. Saute with onions browned in oil, sprinkle with
vinegar and water, then give rise to the plate "aole 'n Sisa".
27
Pike (in sauce is a popular appetizer), tench, chub, perch, carp, offer the opportunity to cook
dozens of different dishes ranging from appetizers, to the first main course. Often these dishes are
seasoned with lemon and olive oil produced locally.
Concluding the lunch or the dinner the Sanvigilini, typical biscuits Garda, are made with raisins. If

Wellness
Eternal moments of well-being
If we think of healthy air of Lake Garda and genuine products of the land, we can say that are really
good for the physical and mental health.
The lake can be "prescribed" as a prescription, it has healing properties. The breeze, rich in iodine
and minerals, acts on the nervous system and leads to a natural relaxation. It is recommended for
pregnant women, children growing and the locals know it well, joggers, bike darts, organizes long
walks.
Healthy walks along the lake are recommended by doctors in cases of depression, which subsides
with water colors and reflections of the sun in nature, and for those suffering from respiratory
problems such as asthma, bronchitis and pneumonia. Even children who suffer from chronic cough
are directed here.
And what of the Monte Baldo, Garden of Europe, and the possibility of treatment with its herbs,
which is so fashionable as in centuries past with medicinal plants?
