We are enthusiasts of all ages with a love affair with the many generations of America’s Premiere Pony Car. Whether it’s a coupe, convertible or fastback from 1964½ to the current model or the 2004 Cobra, we love them all. The mission of club members is to collect, restore, and preserve the history of the Mustang along with the stories of the people and the roles that they played in making this one of the great cars of the 20th Century. Although ownership is not a requirement for membership, your enthusiasm, expertise, and / or love of the automobile are most welcome. Many of our club members own one or more Mustangs in varying body styles, models and years. Club members are always exchanging information, providing sources for parts, literature and helpful hints for restoring or maintaining their Mustangs. Our members are a diverse group of individuals, located throughout Southeastern Michigan and all share a great appreciation for the Ford Mustang. Our general membership meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month. Our monthly newsletter, The Accelerator, provides the members with reports on club activities, technical information, advertisements and business service locations and more. Some club activities include car shows, picnics, sporting events, cruise nights and technical sessions. Star Studded Year! And the surprises just don't stop! As many of you witnessed we made history once again at the June meeting with two very special guests! We had Susan Lampinen (Head of Color & Materials) from Ford Motor Co. & The legendary Lee Holman from Holman & Moody fame grace us with their presence at the meeting and both gave presentations! What other club has people of this stature at their monthly meetings on a very consistent basis? Answer? NO ONE! The good news is it will not stop here, we have very special guests each month from JulyOctober that will be coming to join us! What an honor it was to listen to their presentations! They both have so much passion for what they do, which is why they both have been very successful in their careers. As I am writing this, I am also very deep into the planning of one of the highlight events of the year which will be over when you read this. It is the Downriver Pre Cruise Party for MOCSEM Members only to attend! Another huge benefit of being a member. We will have over 100 Mustangs at this event! Gonna be a great night! Also I am very deep into the Mustang Heroes Banquet Planning as well of course our main event the 50th Anniversary Event in Dearborn (Mustang Memories)! Each day the event gets better and better! Mustang “The First 50 years” By Ken Kirchoff http://www.tmbv.com/Mustang-The-First-50Years/productinfo/MUSTANG/ If you’re a Mustang fan who wants a video which does a great job reviewing the history of the Mustang this one is a great choice. The story of the Mustang is a great one and this being the 50th anniversary is one which should be told and shared. It starts off with explaining the purpose behind the video and how they approached making it. The purpose was to celebrate this great anniversary event. It also includes actual owners of Mustangs telling their stories about the car and what it means to them. The focus was how the car inspired, attracted and passion envolked with in people. The story goes through all generations of the Mustang explaining key features of each generation. It is full of factoids which may not be common knowledge. The video is well done and enjoyable to watch. MOCSEM members will feel at home watching this video. There are interviews with Gale Halderman, William Deary, John Clor. This year the club has visited Gale Halderman’s barn , met with him and seen his personal collection. We have also visited the Deary Shelby Collection. Our own John Clor is the video. “An excellent portrayal of the 50 year progression of the Mustang. Early history facts are correct, with well researched pictures and video used through out.” Robert Fria – Author, Mustang Genesis Lee Holman, Holman and Moody Lee told the club about the Holman and Moody racing history. Shared many stories including how successful they had been in Europe in the early 60’s leading the way for Carroll Shelby and his racing teams. “This is a ‘must have’ for every Mustang enthusiast. Another home run for TM. Well researched and presented in a story-like manner to appeal to all Mustang enthusiasts. Narrator did a wonderful job and interviewees all offered interesting narrative. The breakdown of each the evolution of the car over the past five decades. Far surpasses any previous show on Mustang.” Steven Tapper, Mustang historian and treasurer, Mustangs of Maryland Mustang Owners Club of Southeastern Michigan • PO Box 39088, Redford, MI 48239 • www.mocsem.com The Accelerator Page 6 “Mustang DVD by TM is very well done and exciting to watch. The opening grabs your attention and ir keeps getting better. Enlightened approach with fascinating pictures and dialogue.” Gale Halderman, Former Ford Design Director “Wow! Fantastic. The Mustang Nation is going to love this. Best ever.” William Deary, The Carroll Collection "TM’s Mustang DVD combines an extensive history with technical data on how the Mustangs changed through the years. Great interviews and features. Covers every Mustang model. By far the best show on Mustang ever produced.” Al Rice, Ford Marketing, retired “Fabulous! Great quality and value. An enjoyable balance of new and archival material. The voices are strong, and great cars captured in the footage; especially cool to hear from some of the original team that designed and engineered the Mustang.” Matt Stone, Automotive Journalist I put it in and could not stop watching it! Love it! Mike Rey, President, Mustang Owners Club of Southeast Michigan Great content that would be ideal and relevant to any Mustanger!” Mark Storm, Auto Trader Detailing Tips & Secrets - Wax On, Wax Off JUNE 16, 2014 BY JOHN LONG Car wax, paint sealants, paint protectants, paste or liquid, what’s the difference? They can be confusing if not understood, all are a protectant to your paint. Some do a more effective job than others, but all protect against the harsh environmental elements and help prevent premature deterioration caused by oxidation. If you go down the auto appearance aisle in stores, there are hundreds of products that can be used, and each claims that theirs is the best. away quickly. These are excellent toppers over an existing wax to boost the shine before a show. Up next are cleaner waxes or pre-wax cleaners. A one step product that has polishing and protectant abilities. Because of the cleaners, they don’t leave as much protection on the paint surface, so you would want to follow this with something that would provide more protection. The fourth and best is the synthetic paint sealants. There are two kinds, polymer-based and acrylic-based. They can both withstand temperatures over 1,000 degrees, and offer the longest durability. The polymer based will give the best protection, shine and slickness, where the acrylic based has good durability, but needs a carnuba topper to improve shine and slickness. Of all the products there’s no right or wrong choice. It’s what will work best for your needs. Some waxes or sealants work better on different colors. What looks great on a light color, might not look as good on a darker color. The cleaner, more contaminant free your paint is, the more reflective it will be after applying your sealant. Always remember, if you use synthetics with a carnuba, put the synthetic on first, and give it time to bond to the paint. Some sealants need 12-24 hours cure time. I put on a polymer based sealant, wipe off and let sit overnight, and the next day apply a carnuba topper, and maintain with a quick detailer. I use a liquid and spread it thin, remember more is not better, and there will be less product dust to remove. If you have time and patience, two coats ensures proper coverage. A good procedure to a perfect paint is Wash-CleanPerfect-Protect-Maintain. It seems like a long road, but patience and passion are what drives obsessive detailers to perfection! Shine on my friends. Two of the Original Shelby GT350 Mustang Prototypes to Meet Up in Tulsa, Oklahoma JUN-13-2014 3:00 PM ET HTTP://WWW.AT.FORD.COM/NEWS We all want durability, looks and slickness. There are four basic types of protectant for paint. The traditional paste wax is the oldest that’s a hard wax that contains petroleum distillates and silicone for a temporary shine. Hard to put on and remove if left on for very long. Next is carnuba based wax. They're soft, easy to use and pricey depending on how much carnuba is in the can. These are made more for looks than durability as the sun and heat tend to breakdown the carnuba, resulting in protection going Mustang Owners Club of Southeastern Michigan • PO Box 39088, Redford, MI 48239 • www.mocsem.com The Accelerator Page 7 More than three decades after taping a full-page ad ripped from a 1965 car magazine above his bunk on an Alaskan crab boat, Mark Hovander is touring the country this year with the same Ford Shelby GT350 Mustang pictured on that page. Hovander and his crosstown friend John Atzbach are big fans of the first-generation Shelby Mustang, and between them they own two of the three original prototypes. As Mustang enthusiasts across the country and around the world celebrate 50 years of their favorite pony car, Hovander and Atzbach are bringing their cars to nine different events in 2014, including this weekend’s 40th annual Mid America Ford and Shelby Nationals in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Hovander’s car bears Shelby serial number SFM5S003, while Atzbach owns SFM5R003. Those numbers identify the cars as two of the three original prototypes used by Shelby American to develop the road-going and racing versions of the GT350. “In 1980, I went up to Alaska to work on a crab fishing boat to earn some money in order to buy a 1965 GT350,” said Hovander. “Since space was limited, we were only allowed one duffel bag. I was a huge Shelby Mustang fan, so in addition to my clothes, I brought an ad for the GT350 that I had ripped out of an old Shelby American magazine. “I figured this would give me inspiration during the 20-hour workdays, but little did I know that nearly 30 years later I would own the very car pictured in that ad.” In mid-1964, about the time that the first of what would eventually be more than 9 million customers were driving away from Ford dealerships in the original Mustang, the home office called in Carroll Shelby and his team to help establish some serious performance credentials for the car. Shelby and Ford agreed to develop a high-performance version of Mustang that would compete in the Sports Car Club of America’s B-production class beginning in 1965. Venice. One car was meant to be used for development of the street-legal GT350, while the other two were prototypes for the GT350 competition version. These R models, as they are referred to today, were set up to battle against the Jaguar XK-E and 327-cubic-inch V8-powered Chevrolet Corvette. The street car was actually the first of the GT350 line, but a mix-up in stamping the VIN tags meant it actually got serial number 5S003 (S for street), while the race cars got 5R001 and 5R002 (R for racing). This would later cause more confusion and affect the history of 5S003. By the early 2000s, Hovander had owned several Boss 302 and Shelby Mustang models, while also helping the then-owner of 5S003 with some extensive research on the history of the car. It turned out that in 1979, because of modifications by the original owner in 1965, 5S003 was thought to have originally been a race car, and it was restored as an R model and used for vintage competition for the next 13 years. “In part, the confusion was fueled by production records that were missing until they were discovered in Carroll Shelby’s attic in the mid-1980s,” said Hovander. “After 5R002 was rediscovered in Monterrey, Mexico, and the original Ford and Shelby serial numbers were verified from old records, we realized 5S003 was never supposed to be a factory R model.” After its successful racing career that included a debut victory in the hands of the late Ken Miles at Green Valley, Texas on Feb. 14, 1965, 5R002 eventually wound up in Monterrey. Following a twoyear search, Mark Gillett of Dallas located the race car in 1989, purchased it and brought it back to Texas. Some years later, it was sold to Steve Volk, owner of the Shelby American Collection museum in Boulder, Colorado. To qualify, Shelby would have to get at least 100 production street cars ready by Jan. 1, 1965, with chassis and suspension upgrades that could not be changed for the race cars. “I’ve owned 20 Mustangs including a variety of Boss and Shelby models over the years, but 5R002 was at the top of my wish list,” said Atzbach. “I thought it was a pipe dream because it was in a museum, but when I heard Steve Volk was selling it in early 2010, I quickly made a deal and bought it.” Three white K-code 1965 Mustang fastbacks with the stock Hi-Po 271-horsepower, 289-cubic-inch V8 engine were delivered from the San Jose, California assembly plant to the Shelby American shop in Atzbach currently owns 11 Shelby Mustangs, a 1970 Boss 302 and 1970 Boss 429. He loves the Shelbys for the aesthetic design, the performance and the great early racing history. Mustang Owners Club of Southeastern Michigan • PO Box 39088, Redford, MI 48239 • www.mocsem.com The Accelerator Page 8 After determining 5S003 was in fact supposed to be the very first street-legal GT350, Hovander sold another restored GT350 to Atzbach and bought 5S003. He intended to eventually restore it to the condition it was in when it was first introduced to the public in early 1965 – the way it appeared in that factory ad. After driving the car for about a year and putting more than 2,000 miles on it the first summer, Hovander decided it was time to start the restoration. Bringing it back to its original prototype condition meant tracking down a lot of nearly 50-year-old parts, and there were some interesting discoveries uncovered along the way. Atzbach and Hovander decided they wanted to have the restoration of both SFM5R002 and 5S003 completed in time for the celebration of 50 years of Mustang in April 2014 so the cars could be displayed together. Jim Wicks, founder of the Mid America Ford and Shelby Nationals meet became involved in the restoration process of the two historic Shelbys. Paint supplier PPG provided the actual formula for the white finish the cars were sprayed with in 1964, and both cars were refinished from the same batch, thus ensuring they would be identical when placed next to each other. John Brown of Thoroughbred Restorations in Oklahoma City performed the restoration of the R model, 5R002, and final assembly of the street prototype, 5S003. Both cars were finished side-by-side, to ensure consistency. 5R002 was restored back to the way it looked when Miles drove it to that first victory. Hovander’s car looks just as it did when Shelby American designer Peter Brock drove it during the advertising photo shoot along Coldwater Canyon in Beverly Hills, California. To save time and give the appearance that more than one car had been built; 5S003 was equipped with the standard Kelsey-Hayes stampedsteel wheels on the driver’s side and a pair of prototype Cragar cast-aluminum wheels on the passenger side. Only three of the original prototype Cragar wheels were located during restoration, and two of them are on the passenger side of 5S003 today, with a pair of steelies on the driver’s side. to find original photos of the two prototypes. In early June, Archives Manager Dean Weber located a box of negatives from that 1965 advertising photo shoot of 5S003 that had previously been unidentified. Those historically significant photos have been scanned and shared with Hovander and Atzbach. “I love the whole history of Shelby American – the cars that were built there, but most importantly, the people who created them,” said Atzbach. “These were and are some of the brightest, most energetic, talented people out there. I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know many of the original Shelby American employees who are still with us today, and I can only say great things about them.” Atzbach and Hovander debuted their restored cars together in March 2014 at the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance in Florida, then again at the Mustang 50-year celebration at Charlotte Motor Speedway in April. After the Mid America meet, they will appear at six more events this year. After the tour, Hovander plans to remove some of the original parts like the 50-year-old Goodyear tires, spark plugs, radiator hoses and air filter, installing some modern reproduction equivalents. After breaking in the engine properly, he plans to carefully put a few miles on his GT350. Hovander has written extensively about the original development of the GT350 on his site, http://1965gt350mustang.com/history.html. What about the other Shelby factory team GT350-R model, SFM5R001? It resides in a private, undisclosed location somewhere and has not been seen publicly in years. Ford and Mustang fans everywhere thank John Atzbach and Mark Hovander for sharing their passion with the world. How can I get my car featured in MOCSEM’s Accelerator?
