Paul Motian
25 Marc h 1931 – 22 Nov e mber 20 11
In many interviews, this New York drummer of Turkish-Armenian extraction has
been asked time after time for anecdotes
about Bill Evans, Paul Bley and Keith Jarrett. His early days attract attention because he was one of the few musicians who
can look back on
experiences with
Lennie Tristano,
Tony Scott and
Coleman Hawkins, who even
appeared with
Billie Holiday
and Thelonious
Monk in his
youth,
and
played
with
Arlo Guthrie at
the
legendary
Woodstock Festival. The list of
great stars Motian has played
with goes on for
pages; for some
years he has been reading through his
painstakingly documented annual calendars, to stir his memory and write his autobiography.
It is not until 1972, at the age of 41, that
Paul Motian records his debut album under
his own name (»Conception Vessel«, with
Keith Jarrett, Charlie Haden, Leroy Jenkins, Sam Brown and Becky Friend). Manfred Eicher from ECM gives the »sideman«
the chance to realise his own musical concepts. Perhaps this late start in being able
to shape and fashion recordings under his
own direction leads to Motian continuing
to be seen mainly as an important accompanying musician. Further Motian productions and near-countless concert tours
and recordings with Keith Jarrett, Charles
Lloyd and Charlie Haden’s »Liberation
Music Ensemble« follow, but over the
years, almost unnoticed, Motian develops
his first trio, with Bill Frisell on guitar and
Joe Lovano on saxophone. In the mideighties, Motian
begins to collaborate with Stefan
Winter ’s
newly founded
music company
JMT Production.
In contrast to
the productions
up to this point,
the first concept
albums now appear. The first is
»Monk in Motian«, played by
his trio, with
guest musicians
Geri Allen on
piano
and
! Ro b er t Le wi s
Dewey Redman
on tenor saxophone. Next comes »Bill
Evans«, recorded without pianist by the
Paul Motian Trio and guest bass player
Marc Johnson. Winter & Winter, founded at
the end of 1995, takes over and publishes
all JMT’s productions, as well as continuing work already begun. In the nineties
Motian presents his new group »The Electric Bebop Band«, and interprets jazz compositions by »Monk and Powell«. Paul
Motian’s important third group »Tethered
Moon«, with Masabumi Kikuchi on piano
and Gary Peacock on bass, dedicates itself
to »Kurt Weill«, and plays »Chansons
d'Édith Piaf« and »Experiencing Tosca«.
Albums with his compositions and live
productions from Toyko, recorded on his
60th birthday, and live at the Village Vanguard, complete this picture of Paul Motian.
Amidst all this work, there’s a special series: »Paul Motian On Broadway«. Vol. 1
got recorded in 1989, Vol. 2 in 1990, and
Vol. 3 in 1992. In 2006, for his 75th birthday, Motian goes back to Broadway and
presents »Paul Motian On Broadway Vol. 4
or the paradox of continuity« with his
group Trio 2000 + One, with Chris Potter
on saxophone, Larry Grenadier on bass, the
singer Rebecca Martin, and pianist Masabumi Kikuchi. In 2009 Paul Motian recorded
»Paul Motian On Broadway Vol. 5« with
Thomas Morgan on bass and saxophon
player Loren Stillman plus Michaël Attias,
sax and Masabumi Kikuchi, piano.
In the years 2007, 2008 and 2010 Winter & Winter released »Live At The Village
Vanguard« Volume I, II and III with Chris
Potter and Larry Grenadier plus Greg Osby
and Masabumi Kikuchi. In September 2010
Stefan Winter produced his 21st leader
album with Paul Motion under the title
»Windmills Of Your Mind« with guitarist
Bill Frisell, Thomas Morgan on bass and
vocalist Petra Haden. This album was
made to celebrate Paul Motian’s 80th birthday in 2011. The title song is one of the
most beautiful memories of Paul Motian.
This album got released in late spring 2011,
and on the 22nd of November 2011 Paul
Motian passed away.
The great art of variation and improvisation is the great art of Paul Motian: he unravels themes, rhythms and harmonies,
reducing, denaturing, and creating new
things that come so close to innermost origins that unsuspected aspects of these hits
are revealed. Yet Motian is no stage director, moving the players around to create
his music: he doesn’t conduct, but sets up
an environment in which the individual
gifts of his musicians can develop unhindered. With a sure knack, he chooses as yet
unknown musicians, just as Bill Frisell, Joe
Lovano, Brad Schoeppach, Kurt Rosenwinkel or Chris Potter once were, bringing
them together with close colleagues such
Gary Peacock, Charlie Haden, Masabumi
Kikuchi, Lee Konitz or Dewey Redman,
and finding repertoire that seems as if it
was specially composed for this ensemble.
His own compositions or 'texts' by Kurt
Weill, Harold Arlen, Giacomo Puccini or
Thelonious Monk are the themes for his
variations. Every single recording bears the
personal unmistakeable handwriting of
Paul Motian, however diverse the repertoire and instrumentation. Sometimes Paul
Motian’s arrangements and instructions
consist merely of the request to forget the
structure of a song and become immersed
! R ob e r t Lewi s
in its lyrics. His artistry in playing drums,
snares and cymbals springs from an inner
conviction that he should devote his entire
being to serving and fulfilling music. Each
note has its destiny and meaning; he leads
events with an invisible hand, listening
and sometimes giving impulses without
even touching a cymbal or drum.
