Road Ramblings
by Keith Olcha, Maverick Region President
N
ovember is the month when our track
driving and competitive driving events
complete for the year. For 2003, no more
Autocrosses, Time-Trials, Drivers Educations,
or Maverick-Sponsored Club Racing. Looking
at this year from that perspective leaves me
feeling fulfilled. We had four autocross and
time trial driving schools, seven autocrosses,
six time trials, four drivers educations at racetracks, and our
annual club race. We also had a rally school, two rallies, and a
few Concours Events. We hold our annual region dinner,
Founder’s Day in November. This year it’s on November 8th at
the Speedway Club at Texas Motor Speedway. Founder’s Day is
our annual celebration of the founding and tradition of
Maverick Region. We vote and submit ballots for the upcoming
year’s officers and present awards and recognize members for
outstanding service and contribution to the region. We also give
out trophies to the competitors who drove in Autocrosses and
Time Trials during the year and placed. There is a silent auction,
many door prizes you can win, and a great time for socializing
with fellow Mavericks. I hope you’re reading this knowing you’ll
be joining us, and if not, you’ll think about coming to Founder’s
Day next year. While the competitive driving season is over, the
calendar is not empty. There are still many activities and events
going on between now and the end of the year.
...While the competitive driving season is
over, the calendar is not empty...
Now that the weather has changed, on a completely
different note, exterior car-care can be a big part of the
Porsche-nut’s mentality. Some folks do it all by themselves
while others utilize detailing services or automatic or hand car
washes. Of the do-it-yourself crowd I’ve talked to people who
buy more expensive car care products and those who purchase
lower-priced items readily available at auto parts stores and
Wal-Mart, etc. I wonder what is really the ultimate system?
I have chatted with people pretty well versed in everything
from hiding swirl marks to removing Cosmoline from their
undercarriage on a newer Porsche. I’m looking for that
ultimate combination of an easy-to-use, best quality, yet
inexpensive set of products. I have always been careful about
keeping my cars clean and waxed, but never really had a
“system” that included every step- where you park your car,
covers, washing schedules and the like. So I made up my own
“system” that is reasonably cheap and fast to follow. I
developed this system by asking many people about their
methods for keeping their Porsches shiny and wear-free.
I decided that when I traded my first Boxster S in for
a newer one, I would attempt to develop a complete
maintenance “lifestyle” for that car- something I had never
done before. Let me explain: I put 20,000 miles on the first
Boxster in just under 2 years time, and did nothing
exceptional to prevent or eliminate rock nicks, fallout, or
normal abuse. I washed the car whenever it got fairly dirty and
waxed it once every 3 months, tops. Let me give the conclusion
first, by saying that this new Boxster S has 17,000 miles on it
in 17 months and it looks light-years better than the first one.
It has been on the racetrack, autocrossed, and driven on the
highway a lot. So let me share with you what I did:
First, as far as prevention, I use a Porsche nose bra to cover
the front of the car. It is installed about 75 percent of the time.
This bra has eliminated most front paint chips (especially at
Drivers Education events and on the highway). I wash the bra
when I wash the car and then remove it and wash the nose of
the car. I never put the bra on wet, and always put it on a clean
car. Another approach is the 3M clear protective pieces that
can be glued to most surfaces- rocker panels, hoods, bumpers
and fenders. Racecars use this material a lot. The film is almost
invisible and looks great. That solves the problem bras
generate- beautiful car- ugly plastic nose mitten. You can buy
sheets of this protective film or pre-cut specific model designs
for bras, etc. It’s a squeegee and patience job I’m told. It comes
off with a heat gun. In the future I may attempt to install some
of this myself, or have it done by an installer. Second, I
installed small mud-flaps (yes, you read that correctly) from
Tweeks that are not obtrusive and protect the front and rear
rocker panels from debris and dirt kicked up by the tires.
Third, I bought a car cover and use it whenever the car spends
the night outside. Finally, when I go to the track or an
autocross, I use some racers tape strategically placed around
the wheel well arches and rear bumper to keep additional
rocks off the paint. I use mineral spirits or products like
“Goof-Off ” to get the goo off after I remove the tape. The car
is nearly chip-free.
I also decided to try a fast detailing method for the
exterior. I buy the gallon sizes of Meguiars car wash and Quick
Detail from www.carcareonline.com, Eagle-1 “Wax-as-U-Dry”
from Wal-Mart, and Costco’s gallon-size Kirkland version of
Simple Green. I use the Meguiars car wash and then the Eagle-1.
That “Wax-as-U-dry” is great. Spray it on a wet car and dry as
usual. The car feels waxed and smooth. I use the Quick Detail
spray a couple of times per month also. I use the Costco green
cleaner on the wheels and inside fender wells. I have yet to
actually wax the car. But I will soon, and will use 3M Imperial
Hand Glaze followed by Meguiars #26 yellow wax.
I also learned about micro-fiber towels for applying and
removing products. These towels leave no little threads, fuzz
etc. on the surface. They can be bought from body shop supply
stores, carcareonline above, and Griots garage, among other
sources. They, however, are not cheap! I’m thinking of buying
the gallon of car wash and the spray detailer from Griots
Garage when my current Meguiars inventory runs out to try
something different. I assume some company manufactures
chemicals for Griots as he is a retailer, but if one of you know
more, please let me know. Till next month then, keep the shiny
side up, the greasy side down, and clean the grease off.

As one of only two dealerships in the country to earn the Premiere Dealer and
Perfect Service Award - and the only one in the Lone Star State - we were, shall
we say, a bit excited. Thanks to our incredible clients, our perfection-driven
staff, and Porsche, for giving us a reason to celebrate today, and every day.

Curves Ahead
by Matt Platts, Editor
A
s I write this, we've had a blast of a cold
front come through. I hope that last week
was the end of our 90 degree temperatures for a few months, I'm looking forward to
hitting the roads with the windows open and a
cool breeze flowing through the car.
The fall driving season is winding down, I
hope everyone made it out to as many events
as they could. I know I was planning on driving more this year,
but things never work out as planned, do they? This season
appears to be tour season - the Arkansas tour was a hit, Fall Day
Tour is coming up on the 15th followed by the North Texas Hill
Country Scenic Drive on the 22nd. The Fall Day Tour departs
from Mesquite on Hwy 80, while the North Texas Hill Country
Scenic Drive departs "out west" in Fort Worth on University
Drive. I'm intrigued by the Scenic Drive as it's promoted as
being either (your choice) a TSD Rally or an instructed tour.
I'm not much of a rally-ist, so I'm thinking about the
instructed tour. I don't know exactly where the "North Texas
Hill Country" is, but I'm guessing it's many of the same roads
that I strafe with my motorcycle every other Sunday. I'm really
looking forward to it. RSVP to Ted Glover or Teri Davis for the
appropriate event if you would like to join the fun.
I've heard that our Happy Hours have been a hit lately,
even in poor weather. The Railhead Smokehouse turned out to
be a bit soggy in September. I remember to our first Happy
Hour at the RPM Cafe last spring and was pleasantly surprised
with the turnout and setting. It sounds like the Maverick return
to that location was even more popular in October. The
upcoming Happy Hour is shaping up to be something new and
different... we are going to The Abbey of Richardson. This will
be a new Happy Hour location for us and it looks like we will
be entertained by one of the Happy Hour hosts, Dennis
Chamberlain. Dennis and his friend Stephanie perform at
various local clubs, but this is a special presentation just for our
club. I can't wait!
Maverick Minutes
by Mimi Spreen
he Board meeting was held at Park Place
Porsche on Tuesday, October 7 and
called to order at 7:06pm.
Bob - will have more expenditures that weren't on the list
that Keith passed out, that will effect the bottom line. Updated
budgets for Parade 04 needed from committee chair.
Attendees: Cody Sears, Noby Takahashi,
Mike Brodigan, Dennis Chamberlain, Joel
Nannis, Wendy Shoffit, Lanean Hughes, Bob
Knight, Tinker Edwards, Michael Wingfield,
Keith Olcha, Mark Gluck and Mimi Spreen.
Mike Brodigan - 5 new prospects for advertisers. Will
check with Matt to see how much room we have for new
advertisers. Would like to ask advertisers to write a short
statement that they would like readers to know about them, ie:
new concepts, new products. Mike will put together a letter
notifying advertisers of this new idea. He would also like to put
together a Parade edition to be included in the June Slipstream
or be a stand alone issue that has Ft. Worth restaurants and
other places where Parade attendees can go or visit while in Ft.
Worth. Mike is asking for help in putting that together.
Suggested that he talk to Jan and Fran about ideas.
T
Keith - Brought financials (really income statements) and
expenditures which were passed out to everyone. Discussion
took place about publishing these and a decision was made to
have them at the Board Meetings on a quarterly basis.
Wendy - with the Matt hat on. Article deadline is 10/12
which will help in finishing by the 17 or 18 and will be able to
get the Ussery by the 20th of the month. Thanx to Wendy.
Many articles are still needed and "volunteers" will submit to
Matt. This issue is looking a little thin, so articles are needed.
Wendy, as Wendy - Regarding the Slipstream mailings that
have been discussed in length, we will do a trial run to iron out
any problems with labels and if the printing of the labels
works out ok, then we will proceed. Andy Mears is working on
obtaining a bulk mail permit. Motion made to set a limit of
$300.00 for outside Slipstream mailings, seconded and passed.
Also, a grad student at Texas Tech is working on designing a
new web site as part of her thesis. Will have more on that in
the next few months.
Joel - members are good. He has received a few responses
to letters he sent out regarding renewals. Only 1 of 5 wanted
to renew and tried on line with National, who was having a
problem with their on line process. Joel will continue for 1
more month and see if it is worthwhile. He believes that
during and after Parade 04, membership will increase by
about 100.
8
Cody - tech at the track went well. Had a good turnout.
There was a pretty large oil spill on the track that made it
necessary to change the course to avoid the spill. Pennington's
2004 dates have been firmed up, but still trying to firm up
dates at Mineral Wells.
Dennis - The October 16th Happy Hour is at RPM, which
used to be Cafe Vienna. BYOB and cheap food. Lots of
parking and can use the outdoor patio if weather is nice. The
November 20th HH is at Abbey in Richardson with musical
entertainment.
Lanean - Scheduling committee met and 2004 dates are
set. Founder's Day is right around the corner and would like
to get as many people to attend as possible. The Residence Inn
near TMS is offering a $69.00 per night rate for the night of
October 25, the Halloween party, which puts you right there
for the Charity Autocross the next day and also for Founder's
Day, Nov. 8.
Motion made to adjourn the meeting at 8:15, seconded
and approved.
Happy Hour at Railhead Smokehouse

We’ll have some musical entertainment that evening (see ad on
Page 2). The Abbey has an extensive menu, and it’s very reasonably priced.

The Railhead is well-suited for our happy hours. The serving line works well for us, with no waiters, and the food and beverage prices can’t be beat.
Most of us were the hardcore
constituents, but we also had first
time attendee Mitch Ballard from
Coppell. It is interesting to note that Mitch has been a Maverick
member since 2001, but this was his first time he’d attended one
of our events. He has previously been a member of the New
Orleans Region. He acquired his ’86 911 in 1996, and has spent
the last couple of years working on it. Now that it’s all fixed up,
he said he isn’t inclined to take it to the track. But no problem –
he just bought a 944 turbo for that purpose.
Happy Hour Crew: Dennis Chamberlain,
Tinker Edwards, and Mark Gluck
After the October Happy Hour
at RPM Café in Irving, we’ll have
our first happy hour ever in
Richardson on November 20. The
location will be at the Richardson
Abbey (at Coit and Campbell).

wenty-eight hearty Mavericks
braved the storms and outrageous traffic to attend the
happy hour at the Railhead
Smokehouse in Colleyville on
September 11. I didn’t see any
Cayennes, but on this particular
evening I wish I’d owned one.

Driver Education at MotorSport Ranch
By Chris Irby
My instructor, Mike Brodigan, was a great teacher and a really big help to me on the track. He was able to show me a new line
that I had never run before. This new line felt much more comfortable and much faster than the line that I had previously
learned. I really appreciate all of the help he was able to provide
for me.
I
recently attended the last DE of 2003 for the Maverick Region,
at MotorSport Ranch sponsored by Boardwalk Porsche. I have
attended events put on by other organizations before, but this
was my first time to drive with the Porsche Club. I felt like this event
was run much better than those held by the other organizations.
Our run groups always went out on time and in an orderly manner,
the catered barbecue lunch was great, and I always felt safe while I
was on the track during the run sessions. This event was the most
fun I have ever had at any of the track events that I attended.
MSR’s clubhouse is a cool place to watch the action from
I am really excited that the Maverick Region was able to
expand their schedule of track events for next year. After my
wonderful experience with this last event, I can’t wait to get back
out to the track again with the Maverick Region next year.
On Saturday, Boardwalk Porsche provided cheeseburgers,
hot dogs, and all the fixings after the track had cleared in the
evening. The cookout was a great idea and also a great way to finish a long day at the racetrack. Thank you: Larry Irby, Cindy Irby,
Chris Alford, Archie VanScoonhoven, and Laura VanScoonhoven
for all of your time and efforts to provide a great dinner for all of
us at the track.
Cliff Blackshear was also at the event, on behalf of Boardwalk
Porsche, to provide mechanical services to participants when
needed. Cliff always seemed to be busy looking into several of the
different technical problems that arose throughout the weekend.
I’m sure there are several participants who greatly appreciate all
of the efforts and services put forth by Cliff throughout the weekend.

Since Hans Hoffmann, Cliff Blackshear, and myself were at
the event as members of Boardwalk Auto Group, there were several people, throughout the weekend, who showed us their appreciation for our support. It felt good to know that everyone really
appreciated all of Boardwalk Porsche’s efforts to help the
Maverick Region run an excellent event to finish up for 2003.

Leadfoot Reunion
By Noby Takahashi
A
hhh, late September. When the north Texas weather starts to
become bearable and fall is right around the corner. Oh,
that’s right; I keep on forgetting that Texas doesn’t have four
seasons. In any case, it’s the time of year where the competitive
driving season for Maverick Region nears an end and we try to lure
the old (in experience, not age) leadfoots back out to Mineral Wells.
The Leadfoot Reunion for 2003 consisted of Time Trial #5 on
Saturday utilizing Course 2 and a huge course designed by Rocky
Johnson on Sunday for Autocross #6.
Walking the autocross course on Sunday morning was interesting, it took nearly 30 minutes to walk it once. This event also
gave Charlie an opportunity to roll out some of the equipment
being prepared for Parade ’04. The event was delayed slightly in
the morning, due to an oil leak on Rick Gonzales’ good looking
914-6. We even had to modify the course to avoid the slick spots.
After all was said and done, Mark Steele looked really smooth in
his 993 and took TToD honors. Since I usually don’t excel at
autocrosses, there isn’t much to talk about my driving on Sunday.
I loaded up my Boxster S on the new open trailer and towed
out to Mineral Wells on Friday evening. Since I left Dallas a little
late, I missed the gang having dinner at Baris. I also missed hitting cement poles sticking out of the ground, for which my trailer fender (and my bank account) was very grateful. After a good
night’s sleep at the Executive Palace and a greasy #1 breakfast at
Braum’s, I headed out Mineral Ring to find out that a large group
of people had shown up before 7AM. On-site tech and Intro to
Time Trial 101 overview both seemed to work out just fine and
the Driver’s Meeting commenced on time at 9AM.
...Mineral Wells wasn’t miserable
for a change...
Many thanks to everyone that showed up to make this a great
weekend and Mineral Wells wasn’t miserable for a change. We
were all blessed with excellent weather for the entire weekend.
Special thanks to Richard Diller, Tom Lang and the Gohlke’s for
showing up on Saturday, Richard for watching all of our cars and
trailers on Saturday night, and Richard (once again), Ed Mayo,
Fran Ussery and our illustrious Prez Keith Olcha showing up on
his birthday (what was it, 50th?) for the autocross.
I found out that my only competition in Class 7 was going to
be Tom Lang in his Boxster S. Well, it wasn’t going to be a day to
get a very high Driver’s Index. Course 2 is the one with a 90°
right-hander in the back left corner and the long infield. Quite
gravelly as usual and that darn pothole seems to be getting larger
for the 90° right-hander. I just didn’t drive very aggressively and

PS Rick Randall owes me 5 gallons of 87 octane gas, I was
planning on putting that in Machala’s Boxster…
A good crowd enjoyed the sunny, but not sweltering weather.
We had a large turnout for the dinner at Baris. I can’t repeat
what Chuck had to say about my driving in this publication, but
I agreed wholeheartedly (or should I have hit him over the head
with my anchovy pizza?). Rocky rode with me during Fun Runs
and had very similar comments; I was losing a lot of time in the
hairpin turn. Thanks guys, I appreciate the feedback.

my time lagged behind Rocky and Chuck. Currently, I am blaming my slower times on the 18” Kinesis wheels I bought from
Rocky. Like my golf game, it has to be the equipment, not the
operator. The big highlight of Saturday was watching Cody Sears
borrow the Gohlke’s 914 and rip out a TToD, beating out an
excellent time by Richard Diller. Before I forget, there was a cone
down on every one of my afternoon hot laps, and Cody was in
front of me. Did anyone call in those cones on Car Number ‘66’?

ALMS Mazda Raceway at Laguna Seca
by Bill and Marilyn Stafford
T
he signs were all there. Crowds, noise, pits full of unimaginably expensive equipment and the wafting smell of Track
Burgers cooking over an open fire – but wait! Where is the
fog and cold? Not here! Thus began the first of the three days of the
American LeMans Race Series at Mazda Raceway at Laguna Seca
with absolutely perfect weather.
moved me up into the marbles and I slid off the track” explained
Weaver. “I ended up in the tire wall, but didn’t damage the car
and was able to reverse, but it cost us 44 seconds.” It did not
sound this coherent when he said it, however.
The Guard seems to be on the verge of changing for next
year’s GTS class, which has recently been dominated by the
Factory Corvettes. ACEMCO Motorsports announced this weekend that they would be campaigning a new Saleen S7R in the
entire 2004 American LeMans Series. Bobby Rahal also expressed
interest in campaigning a Ferrari next year in GTS.
The weekend began on Friday with a ceremony, cake and
dedication of the “Rahal Straight”. Racing legend Bobby Rahal
was on hand while being honored by the naming of the back
straight (from the exit of Turn 6 up the hill and through the Turn
7 kink to the entrance of the Corkscrew) as the “Rahal Straight”.
The “Rahal Straight” joins the Andretti Hairpin – Turn 2 and the
Rainey Curve – Turn 9, as three named sections of the track (the
Corkscrew being named for a particular movement – I think).
Saturday was a copy of Friday, weather wise, and Steve Saleen
made the most of it by trotting out his new limited series road
car, the Saleen S7. It was debuted at the Monterey Historics' a
couple of weeks earlier where an MSRP of $395,000 is considered
chump change. Nice mid-engined 7 liter, 550 hp, 2750-pound
rocket with guillotine doors that goes 150 mph sitting still.
The two Prodrive Ferrari 550 Maranellos originally swept the
GTS honors, even lapping the rival Corvette, but the winning car
of Tomas Enge was excluded from the results following the postrace inspection for failing the “stall test”. This is a procedure in
which the engine’s primary air intake is blocked off and the car is

The ALMS race was a real seat grabber.
supposed to stall to verify that only air passing through the
regulatory air restrictor is getting to the engine. It did not. The
other Ferrari passed the test and was awarded the win, with the
two Corvettes elevated to 2nd and 3rd. Anyway, it looks as if the
GTS class may have some welcome and needed competition for
the fans.
As is usual at this track, a very crowded first turn disrupted
many teams’ strategies as cold tires and cold brakes coupled with
an excess of adrenaline to produce multiple car contacts. In the P
900 class Frank Beila in the No.1 Audi took control of the race
from the start, although Johnny Herbert (Champion Audi #38)
chased him initially, he eventually fell back with boost problems
caused by a circuit breaker. Didn’t Bosch buy Lucas? Anyway,
Herbert fiddled around with the spark box and reset the breaker.
Not long after, in his haste to catch up to the leaders, he trashed
the car’s gearbox. The Champion crew changed the gearbox in
9 minutes. J.J. Lehto then set off on a truly remarkable drive
and brought the 38 car back to a third place finish in class.
Frank Biela and Marco Werner cruised to a victory with the 1 car
Joest Racing/Infineon Audi R. The victory clinched the
American LeMans Series P900 Manufacturers Championship for
Audi – again.
In the P 675 class James Weaver and Butch Leitzinger earned
honors despite James being helped off the course by slower
traffic at the end of the first hour. “One of the GT Porsches

Sascha Maassen and Lucas Luhr ruled the GT category once
again and claimed the GT class drivers’ championship for the 2nd
straight year. Sascha Maassen (#23- GT Porsche) took the lead
early in the race passing teammate Timo Bernhard (#24 – GT
Porsche). “It was a Sunday afternoon cruise for me,” grinned
Lucas Luhr because Sascha had done all the work. The only
problem they had was their radio went out so they had to communicate using the pit board. The #24 Alex Job Porsche 911 GT3
RS was plagued with problems throughout the day. They had to
change both the battery and the alternator and eventually were
forced to end the day early. Placing second in GT was the
Risi Competition GT Ferrari 360 Modena driven by Ralf
Kelleners and Anthony Lazzaro. The White Lightning/Petersen
Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 RS driven by Johnny Mowlem, Nic
Jonsson and Craig Stanton placed third.
The SPEED GT and Grand Touring races were also held
during the weekend. The SPEED World Challenge
Championships feature a weight-equalization system, REWARDS
(Rewarding of Equalizing Weight Assigned to Reduce Drive
Sensitivity) is based on each competitors finishing position in
each race (basic VooDoo). It is accomplished by adding or
removing ballast weight from the cars. The goal is to provide
close on-track competition between diverse varieties of cars. The
REWARDS weight is displayed on the windshield of each car
(probably to impair visibility). This appears to have limited Bill
Auberlen and the other BMW team cars from running away and
hiding from the rest of the class as they did at Infineon Raceway.
Just don’t ask what they do if they have a driver change.

Randy Pobst and Michael Galati driving Audi RS 6s swept
the front row. Randy described the car like this: “The Audi RS 6
has always qualified well. The Quattro advantage that this car has
drives all four wheels and has a twin turbo V8, which is pretty
much out of the street car. It’s one of the only (unmodified)
street engines running in this series.” Randy also compared the
Audi to the Porsche 911, which he had raced for 5 years. He
stated that the Porsche has power and speed that are addictive,
but the Audi has the torque. This is the first year they are running
the A6 and it is improving with every race. Unfortunately, the
Audis encountered several problems during the race and could
not keep pace with the Viper and the BMWs.
Finally - It’s not too late to become a legend and have a piece
of real estate named after you. First you have to be successful.
This can be achieved by gaining success. So work hard and
save some.

need to be tested for quality and reliability. This is both good
and bad. (They have had a head crack after one race.) They are
field-testing the parts, similar to a beta software release. It does
save the Job team from having to develop their own racing parts.
Job does not receive any direct sponsorship from Porsche. If you
look in the Alex Job pit, there are no signs or decals that say
“Porsche North America”, but you will see “Audi North America”
in the Champion and Audi pits and “Corvette/General Motors”
in the Corvette pit. These teams and the Panoz team receive
factory parts, but they also receive the event purse. Financially
this means the Alex Job will have to raise an additional $200,000
each year from sponsors. Ain’t politics grand?
In SCCA SPEED Touring Car class, Bill Auberlen’s
BMW 325i was accessed 200 pounds compared to his closest
competitor’s 65 pounds. The 200 pounds did not prevent Bill
from winning the race.

The Pit Rat Investigates the Factory Sponsored vs. Privateer
Status: Recently, ALMS announced that Alex Job Racing was
losing their privateer status in the ALMS GT class. This means
that the #23 and #24 Porsches are not eligible for each event
purse. What does this mean to Alex Job Racing and should ALMS
treat them any differently than the Champion Audi Team, the
Joest Team, Panoz Team, or the Corvette Team? All of these teams
including the Alex Job Team have factory drivers. The Alex Job
team does receive developmental parts from Porsche that still

Past performance does not guarantee future results. Value
Trust's inception date is 4/16/82. The investment return and principal value of the fund will fluctuate so that an investor's shares,
when redeemed, may be worth more or less than the original cost.
Calculations assume reinvestment of dividends and capital gains
distributions. Performance would have been lower if fees had not
been waived in various periods. The S&P 500 index is based on
common stock prices, including reinvestment of dividends and
capital gains distributions, and is generally considered representative of the U.S. stock market. Source: Lipper Inc.
