The heated pool will be inviting, the monthly nature hikes and bike rides are sure to be popular, and we will all look to dine outside more frequently either in the overlook or pavilion. Having come up from Florida, my family and I are really looking forward to what, in my opinion, is one of our best seasons, when clear blue skies, low humidity, and cool evenings make outdoor activities and absolute delight. I hope you will join us at the Club to enjoy all that is being offered over the coming months. UPCOMING EVENTS: Don’t miss the many exciting events outlined in this newsletter. We have many great things planned for you in September and October including the Labor Day Weekend Spectacular with Sunday afternoon Duck Race and Dinner, Wine Tasting on September 10th, the final Cabaret Night on September 18th, the Mixed Member-Guest September 24th and 25th, the Cullasaja Cup on October 1st – 3rd, Croquet End of Season Dinner on October 8th, the Autumn Celebration Party on October 9th and the Halloween Party on October 31st. This is just a short list of the many activities and events we have planned for you in September and October. The Cullasaja Club’s Annual Membership Meeting will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 20, 2015 in the Lower Level of the Activity Center. Immediately following the meeting there will be a Complimentary Social and Appreciation Presentation to recognize our 2015 volunteers and outgoing Board Members from both Cullasaja Club and Cullasaja HOA. In early September, you will receive a web-link via email to complete our 2015 Member Satisfaction Survey. We encourage both household spouses to complete the Survey that will take less than 10 minutes to finish. Your input and candid comments are very valuable to us as we look at ways to improve the Club. Thank you in advance for taking the time to provide us with your input! Reflecting back on this season, I am very pleased with the development and growth of the department leaders at the Club. They are an outstanding group of professionals who thoroughly enjoy their time at Cullasaja. Their hard work, leadership, dedication to ensuring your satisfaction throughout the Club, and their willingness to adapt to new ideas are all building the foundation for the quality and service you expect and deserve. I am honored to be able to work alongside such a group of fine people and look forward to continuing to build on the success of this season next year. Thank you for your support this season and we look forward to seeing you at the Club over the coming months. Please let me know if there is anything we can do to enhance your experience at Cullasaja. This year we will have 4 qualifiers in total and the winners all advance to the Croquet Championships in September. JEFF SOO RULES SEMINAR: Recently the CCA invited Jeff Soo, a world class player and instructor, to come in for a full day of rules training. We had a one hour session in a classroom setting followed by individual 1 ½ hours sessions down on our beautiful lawn. We had around 25 in the classroom and about 40 on the lawn, so it was a very successful day. JULY QUALIFIER RESULTS: ADVANCED GROUP MEN’S DOUBLES Clarence Bauknight & Billy Williamson LADIES’ DOUBLES Lane Dawkins & Berty Fransen MIXED DOUBLES Victor & Berty Fransen INTERMEDIATE GROUP LADIES’ DOUBLES Tee Smith & Martha Caire MIXED DOUBLES Bill & Martha Caire Congratulations! NEW PROGRAMMING SADIE HAWKINS DAY CROQUET MIXER AND DINNER PARTY ON THE LAWN: This truly was a fun-filled event where each lady invited a guy to be her partner in a tournament. The ‘all whites’ rule was thrown out of the window for this one – denims were deemed the most appropriate attire for the occasion. There was a bar, a keg of beer, delicious food and foot stomping music. We had over 20 teams enter the competition, and a great time was had by all. Next year we expect to see an even larger crowd. MALLETS & MARTINIS EXPANDS TO TWO NIGHTS EACH WEEK: In response to popular demand, we have decided to offer Mallets & Martinis each Tuesday and Thursday at 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. with dinner to follow. The complimentary croquet clinic will only be held on Thursday afternoons at 3:00 p.m. CROQUET INTER-CLUB MATCHES: This season we will participate in 9 inter-club croquet matches. Please do not hesitate to give me a call if you think you might be interested in playing in one or both of the remaining two. Yes, they are competitive but they are also lots of fun and it’s a great way to see some other clubs and to make new friends. CROQUET FINALE AWARDS BANQUET & DINNER: If you are a member of the CCA, please make plans to join us for this grand finale event. The CCA will cover the cost for the awards and the dinner for all CCA members that evening. It’s just another one of the many perks that all CCA members enjoy each season. So please mark your calendars now and plan to join us on Thursday, October 8th. REMAINING INTER-CLUB MATCHES: Burlingame at Cullasaja Thursday, September 3rd Country Club of Sapphire Valley at Cullasaja Thursday, October 1st ANNUAL CLUBS CROQUET TOURNAMENT: The draw is divided into two groups of 5 clubs playing qualifying matches to get to the Championships. We will choose 8 of our very best players to represent Cullasaja for this event, which will be held on Thursday, September 10th. CUSTOM MALLET FITTING ANYTIME: For those of you who want to be fitted for a custom mallet of your very own, I can provide that service for you anytime you like. I have demo mallets you can try, and I can handle your custom order to the manufacturer. Our Ladies Member-Guest was a huge hit with a sold out crowd of 80 participants. I would like to take a moment and thank Beth Elzemeyer and her committee. The tournament would not have been a success without them! I would also like to thank Jody & Wood Lovell and Highlands Sotheby’s for their tournament support. September & October bring us more opportunities to create mountain memories. The golf shop will have a game available on Labor Day sign up on the tee before you tee off. Our Mixed Member Guest is sold out with 24 teams committed to play. We have our Cullasaja Cup scheduled the 1st – 3rd. Sign up in the golf shop so you don’t miss out on all the fun. With the implementation of our Mill River retail program we have seen huge improvements the last two seasons in our golf shop customer base. Please continue to utilize this amazing program while you are away this winter. We will be happy to order and drop ship anything you wish this offseason. The holidays are right around the corner and I would hate the idea of anyone paying outrageous retail prices!! TWILIGHT WEDNESDAY 7TH, 14TH, 21ST, 28TH 3:30PM GUEST DAY CULLASAJA TENNIS PROGRAM IS ALIVE AND WELL: This season so far we have had more hours of tennis being played by our Members and we are using all 4 courts on a regular basis. If the participation continues at this pace it will be a record breaking year. Thanks to everyone for your continued support of our Cullasaja tennis program. NEW MIXED DOUBLES CHAMPIONS: Congratulations to Rick and Margaret Eichman for winning the 2015 Annual Mixed Doubles Tournament! JUNIOR CLINICS: Much appreciation to all of the parents and grandparents who sent their children out to participate in this year’s junior clinics, which were offered each Wednesday and Friday in July. A special mention goes to the Dunwodys… their grandchildren were at all the clinics and I think they played almost every day while they were in town. INCREDIBLE TURNOUT FOR THE ‘BATTLE OF THE SEXES’ MATCH: I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who attended and supported our event on Saturday, August 8th. There were reports that more than 135 members came out to enjoy the excitement. Don’t worry if you missed it this year, the ladies have already challenged the guys to a 2016 rematch, and have vowed that the outcome next summer will be different! Also, many, many thanks to Betsy Butler & Farah Reynolds, and Rick Eichman & Larry Ainsworth because without them this match would never have happened. It was truly wonderful to see such a large crowd of spectators cheering them on. THE TENNIS PROGRAM IS ALIVE AND WELL: The tennis program has had a very busy season so far. The hours of play through the month of July are currently ahead of the hours from the previous year. This means that by the end of October we will have once again played well over 4,000 hours of tennis here at the club. We have two big months left, and we still have lots of fun-filled tennis in store for all of you. FRIDAY 9TH LABOR DAY WEEKEND AT THE TENNIS CENTER: Pro’s Choice Round Robin will see some form of round robin play, so if you are in town for Labor Day Weekend, stop by the Tennis Center and join the fun. FROM THE GREEN | by Tom Nelson by Ken Wheeler | GIT AYOUT! d or a y d o p g ir ur n d y s UPCOMING GOLF COURSE MANAGEMENT PRACTICES. approximately half of our typical rainfall. This has forced us to lean heavily on the irrigation system for the majority of the season. As you may know, we are in the process of installing a new irrigation system and are currently a little more than 50% complete with the installation. Holes 2-8 and 15-17 have the new system with holes 1,9-14 and 18 slated to be completed this off-season. It has proven to be quite a challenge to manage 2 very different systems. The biggest difference most golfers have noticed is the wetter fairways on the “old holes” . For the golf maintenance staff, the most noticeable difference has been the drastically reduced number of man-hours required to hand water the “new holes” . The coverage of the new system is 100% better and more uniform than that of the old. While we still have some areas that have browned out, this has less to do with irrigation coverage and more to do with the different types of turf grasses that occupy our rough. We actually welcome the opportunity to stress these areas during dry times. While unsightly, it provides an opportunity to introduce desirable turf through inter-seeding. Beginning next week the weak and heavily contaminated areas will be re-seeded to promote a more drought tolerant, playable and aesthetically pleasing stand of turf in the rough. I would like to take a moment to update the membership on some upcoming inputs we have scheduled for the next few weeks on the golf course. Over the last several off-seasons we have installed new Kentucky Bluegrass roughs around 12 of our green surrounds. In our climate it does not take long for the new sod to become contaminated. In effort to fight contamination, we plan to make three applications of an herbicide that will selectively impact the bentgrass that has taken hold in the new sod. Following application, the bentgrass will become bleached out and weak, giving the Kentucky Bluegrass an opportunity to fill back in. Research has shown that late August through September to be the most effective time to make applications of this product. While treated areas may become a bit unsightly, it is important that we stay ahead of the curve on the bentgrass intrusion of our new roughs. This year’s post Labor Day aerification will have little impact on playability. The greens are in good health and we can safely postpone our more disruptive cultural practices until November. On September 8th we plan to aerify with solid tines (no core removed), double verticut and topdress the greens. This process will minimally impact the surface and they should be back to normal by the weekend. If the weather cooperates, we should easily finish the process on that day and re-open on Wednesday the 9th. In addition to the greens, we plan to solid tine aerify the fairways to help promote better air and water movement through the root zone. This process is also minimally invasive and should heal up in a week to ten days. down toward Sylva and Franklin. We have ridden the Blue Ridge Parkway from near Waynesville to Asheville and had a pretty good showing for the Tour de…(Wait for it) not France but Franklin for the past couple years. Our TDF is not a race but just a tour that is ridden at your own pace. If all this sounds a bit too much we have nice easy rides that do not involve climbing tortuous mountain passes. Some of our routes are quite tame and pretty. I was once outed as someone who spent a lot of time in Tennessee because I said in response to a surprising issue: “Get out!” which, when my Tennessee accent kicks in, sounds more like “Git Ayout”. Well, I am all about Git Ayout and more members are gittin ayout too. Our club is a spectacular property with enough things to keep one busy from early morning to late at night. One thing that makes our club such a special place is the mountains in which it is built. Gittin ayout for some of us means leaving the club to see more of the mountains around us. This article is just to let more of our membership know some of the ways we are doing this. In addition this year we are planning to take a 17 mile downhill mountain bike ride through the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. We have done this route in previous years and everyone who has done it will tell you I am not exaggerating that it is all downhill. And it is on a gently graded gravel road – not a single track on a cliff side. Look for more information in your e-mail and in the Week At a Glance. Our hiking program: All season we schedule hikes on Saturday morning every two weeks. This year we have visited High Falls at peak flow; Hiked the Foothills Trail to Whitewater Falls then beyond it down to South Carolina; wandered down the river on the Chattooga River Trail, and much more. In addition we plan to hike Panthertown with the fall colors and take a walk from the Club to the Devil’s Courthouse. Watch the Week At A Glance for the scheduled hikes and consider joining us. Our cycling group is always looking for more people to get involved. We will even find you a bike to borrow if you want to try before you bring your bike up or even buy one. These are just a couple ways we are making available to help our membership enjoy more of the mountains surrounding the Cullasaja Club. We encourage you to look more in to it and come by the Activity Center to talk to us about more ways to Git Ayout If any of you do not know, we have an active cycling group that does both mountain and road bike riding. We have routes around Highlands and Cashiers of about 20 miles as well as longer routes Thank you for your support of the golf course as we continually work to improve course conditions. If you have any questions or comments please let me know. The Riedel glass company claims their glasses can “turn a sip of wine into a celebration.” The family owned and operated company, which has been around since 1756, uses extensive varietal sensation research and wine expert accounts to support their claim. Many in the wine world agree that the enjoyment of the aroma, taste, texture and finish of a wine is maximized by using the correct and varietal specific glass when enjoying wine. Each wine glass consist of 3 parts; the bowl, the stem and the base. The shape, size and diameter of a glass’s three parts make up the design or architecture of the glass. Every aspect of the glass must relate harmoniously in order to translate the proper message of the wine to the human senses. There are 4 sensations to consider when constructing the perfect glass and drinking a wine; the bouquet, texture, flavor and finish. Stemware should appropriately enhance the quality and intensity of a wine’s bouquet and allow the consumer to enjoy a complete initial impression. The watery, creamy, silky or velvety texture variability of a wine should be highlighted with every sip. Grape specific glasses also create a balanced interaction between fruit, mineral, acid and bitter components within the taste of a wine. The finish should be seamless and long lasting with the properly constructed and chosen glass. it directs the wine fairly quickly to the center of the mouth and tongue. Another type of cut rim guides the wine to the tip of the tongue. If the wine glass is more like the classic balloon-shaped glass, known as a rolled rim, the contour allows the wine to flow all over the mouth but at a slower rate. As a general rule, invest in wine glasses for the varietal you drink the most to enjoy it fully each time you open a bottle. Otherwise, a universal glass will provide everything you need to enjoy every glass of wine. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has recognized a particular shape that is the accepted benchmark at all wine judging and competitions. It is also suitable for the average wine drinker as an all around, every day glass. It should be made of transparent, colorless glass with a lead content of up to 9%. Its dimensions are just under 6 inches tall, with a two inch tall stem and a four-inch tall bowl, about two and a half inches at its widest diameter and two inches across the rim. For example, our sense of taste is spread around the mouth and along the tongue. There are areas where the taste receptors are in charge of sweet, or sour, or salt or bitter. The design of the glass directs the wine to different areas of the mouth and tongue. If the glass is narrower at the top, a glass shape known as a cut rim, If you are interested in learning more about Riedel and why choosing the right glass will change your wine drinking experience? Please join us for a Riedel Glass Seminar and Specialty Wine Tasting on Thursday, September 10th from 5:30 to 6:45. The cost of the tasting and seminar is only $20 per person and includes the wines and appetizers. 9 SEPTEMBER 2015 | cullasajaclub.org Reoccurring Events sunday Monday 6 LABOR DAY PICNIC Wednesday Duplicate Bridge - 9am Croquet Match Play - 9am Ladies Doubles - 10am Twilight Golf - 4pm 13 Friday Ladies Doubles - 10am Canasta - 1pm Happy Hour - 5:30 - 7:30pm tuesday 1 7 Lunch & Dinner Service Labor Day Event 14 HOA-BOD Meeting 9am Book Club 2pm Thursday Men’s Doubles - 10am 9-Hole Men - 10:30am Croquet Clinic - 3pm Mallets & Martinis - 3pm monday wednesday 2 Activities Croquet Tuesday WGA - 18 holes - 9am 9 holes - 10:15am Men’s Doubles - 10am Men & Mallets - 10am SEPTEMBER 2015 Golf Tennis Clinic & Ladies Dbls - 10am 9-Hole Men - 1pm Mah Jongg - 1pm Ladies on the Lawn - 4pm cullasajaclub.org 20 21 CLUB ANNUAL MEETING 3PM Croquet Champ. 10am 8 Clubhouse Closed Aerify Greens CWO Celebration (Offsite) 15 WGA Red vs. Blue 22 9 Lunch & Dinner Service Aerify Greens 16 23 friday saturday 3 4 WGA 18-Hole Interclub @ HF Interclub vs. Burlingame 10am Ladies Bible Study 3-5 pm CWO ARTS & CRAFTS SHOW 5 Modified World Team Tennis 10 11 Twilight Golf 4 pm Ladies Bible Study 3-5 pm F&B EVENT 17 WGA 9-Hole Interclub @ HF Ladies Bible Study 3-5 pm 18 CABARET NIGHT 28 Farmers Market 2-5pm BOG Meeting 8:30 am 29 WGA CLOSING DAY 9:30 AM 30 sunday Monday Golf Tennis Men’s & Ladies Dbls - 10am 9-Hole Men - 1pm Mah Jongg - 1pm Ladies on the Lawn - 4pm 12 Open Play Men & Mallets - 10am Wednesday 19 Duplicate Bridge - 9am Men’s & Ladies Dbls - 10am Twilight Golf - 3:30pm Thursday Open Play 9-Hole Men - 10:30am Mallets & Martinis - 3pm 24 25 Clubhouse Closed No Dinner Service MIXED MEMBER-GUEST 27 Reoccurring Events 26 Mixed Doubles Tournament Super Saturday 7pm Friday Men’s & Ladies Dbls - 10am Happy Hour - 5:30 - 7:30pm Saturday Men’s Bible Study - 8am Men’s Day - 10am Men’s & Ladies Dbls - 10am Happy Hour - 5:30 - 7:30pm Sunday Open Play Sunday on the Lawn - 4pm Sunday Open Play Sunday on the Lawn - 4pm 10 OCTOBER 2015 monday tuesday wednesday Activities Croquet Tuesday Ladies Bible Study 3-5 pm Saturday Men’s Bible Study - 8am Men’s Day - 9am Men’s & Ladies Dbls - 10am Happy Hour - 5:30 - 7:30pm thursday | OCTOBER 2015 thursday friday saturday 1 2 3 Open Play CULLASAJA CUP PAIRINGS PARTY Interclub vs. CCSV 10am Mallets & Martinis 3pm Men’s & Ladies Doubles 10 am CULLASAJA CUP Men’s Bible Study 8am Men’s & Ladies Doubles 10 am CULLASAJA CUP 4 5 6 7 Men’s & Ladies Doubles 10 am Twilight Golf 3:30 pm Open Play Mallets & Martinis 3pm Croquet Finale Dinner 8 9 10 11 12 Men’s & Ladies 13 14 16 17 Open Play Men & Mallets 10am Men’s & Ladies Doubles 10 am Twilight Golf 3:30 pm 15 Doubles 10 am Book Club 2pm Ladies on the Lawn 4pm 19 HOA-BOD 20 21 22 23 24 Meeting 9am Men’s & Ladies Dbls 10 am Ladies on the Lawn 4pm Open Play Men & Mallets 10am Men’s & Ladies Doubles 10 am Twilight Golf 3:30pm Open Play Mallets & Martinis 3pm Men’s & Ladies Doubles 10 am Men’s & Ladies Doubles 10 am 25 26 27 28 29 30 31 Open Play Farmers Market 2-5pm BOG Meeting 8:30 am Men’s & Ladies Doubles 10 am Open Play Men’s & Ladies Doubles 10 am Twilight Golf 3:30pm Open Play Men’s & Ladies Doubles 10 am Men’s & Ladies Doubles 10 am Halloween Party Super Saturday 7pm Open Play Sunday on the Lawn 4pm Open Play Sunday on the Lawn 4pm 18 Open Play Sunday on the Lawn 4pm Men’s & Ladies Doubles 10 am WGA 18-Hole Interclub @ WCC Ladies on the Lawn 4pm Open Play “Friends for Life” Men & Mallets 10am 11 Open Play Mallets & Martinis 3pm Guest Day Men’s & Ladies Doubles 10 am OKTOBERFEST Men’s & Ladies Doubles 10 am Men’s Bible Study 8am Tennis Finale Round Robin/ Luncheon Men’s Bible Study 8am Men’s & Ladies Doubles 10 am UPCOMING EVENTS | 2015 B O OK CLUB All are welcome to join us to discuss: THE MARRIAGE OF OPPOSITES By Alice Hoffman The latest novel by the author of The Dovekeepers.
