Producer’s Notes by Art Good
overnight hotel rooms, let alone 3 nights
of hotel rooms cause you got it. The
biggest name of the weekend always performs last. And if I thought I had it figured
out after 20 years which is the exact same
as 2 decades which when you’re young
you think is forever but when you get
old “er” it’s almost a flash. Then along
comes a worst recession of our lifetime
and still you keep coming to this
destination festival and then this year you
voted the Catalina Island JazzTrax Festival
The Best Jazz Festival in America. Guess
there was water underneath the high dive.
Welcome to an Island in the Middle of the
Pacific Ocean where for a Quarter
Century each October, the Center of the
Smooth Jazz Universe has been this historic old Ballroom built 82 years ago by
chewing gum magnate William Wrigley
(to impress his new Hollywood cronies on
an Island he’d purchased sight unseen 10
years earlier from his office in
Chicago…later bringing his Chicago
Cubs for Spring Training here for 25 years
playing on the soccer field of dreams by
the first hole of the golf course, thus the
Country Club bar and actual Cubs locker
room). In a French Riviera style tiny seaport village, called Avalon, because of the
Magic he felt here, 26 miles off the
Southern California coastline. Now a
25th Year Celebration of the JazzTrax
Magic of October with yet another 30
Stars of Smooth Jazz stepping off boats
and onto the JazzTrax Live Performance
Stage…..looking out to Sea.
This is the Oldest Smooth Jazz Festival in
the World. Since October 1987 when I
hadn’t a clue what I was doing. But that’s
how great things start. With someone
jumping off a high dive not bothering to
check to see if there is…..water underneath. There were moments that first summer I looked for a bridge to jump off. To
this day dealing with booking agents and
artist managers not my favorite way to
spend a day, with a few exceptions. I
wouldn’t recommend to anyone attempting what I attempted and somehow pulled
off back then…and since. A festival. On
an Island. Asking festival goer’s to not
only buy a ticket, but shell out for the 1
hour boat ride as well. Where except for
day trippers it was more mullah for
There are a lot of great jazz festivals
across this great country of ours and my
hat’s off to each and every one. We all
want each other to be successful and this
genre to stay healthy. Sometimes they are
festivals held on hillsides inside big hotel
resorts. Sometimes held in hillside shaped
amphitheatres in big parks in the middle
of big metropolitan areas just off bumper
to bumper freeways. Sometimes they’re a
holiday weekend scene in downtown
bustling restaurant and nightlife areas.
All fabulous festivals that draw thousands
of people and jazz festivals despite the
sad depletion of smooth jazz radio stations. All doing exceptionally well as we
crawl out of this re c e s s i o n a ry hole.
But….. in ALL the world there is NO place
like …..THIS Island…..THIS ballroom…..
THIS village….. THIS beach, surrounded
by this OCEAN…..for Jazz.
Instead of a bustling downtown it’s a tiny
seaport village. You can walk to everything. Major mode of transportation is
golf carts. Where a boardwalk takes you
along a harbor filled with floating hotel
rooms, otherwise known as boats. That
festival goer’s have sailed across from
L.A., Orange County, Santa Barbara/
Ventura and up from San Diego. A boardwalk down to Wrigley’s Casino where the
Avalon Ballroom sits up inside. 6 stories
high. A boardwalk that continues right
alongside the ocean to Descanso Beach
where sits a beach bar open all day, with
kayaks and cabana’s and chaise lounges
to rent. Even a Massage Tent. Where our
S a t u rday Night JazzTrax After Parties
have you dancing on the beach until 2
a.m. with food and drink. Where our
Thursday Night Unplugged Concerts
25th Annual The Grand Daddy of ‘em All
JazzTrax.com
Under the Stars now for the first time begin
each festival weekend a night early and
when you wake up on Friday, you’re
already here.
Instead of a hillside grassy amphitheatre
at a resort or park, the JazzTrax venue is
right at ocean’s edge, looking out to sea.
For 25 years you’ve arrived to a venue
that takes you ‘Back in Time.’ You’re the
smooth jazz Great Gatsby. To 1929 and
into a room where the Big Bands once
ruled and CBS radio broadcast it all
across America ‘Live from the Avalon
Ballroom.’ Still SummerTime Warm in
October off the Southern California
Coastline so as during performance,
French doors that circle the ballroom open
onto a sweeping verandah looking out
over Avalon Harbor, Descanso Beach and
the entire Pacific Ocean. Where twice
Saxophonist Richard Elliot has parasailed
past playing his saxophone high in the air.
This festival is pure smooth jazz October
Delight and in 2012 we enter our next
Quarter Century of magical Octobers
and JazzTrax on an Island in a historic
old ballroom. However we recently had
a most notable person in the Smooth Jazz
World lower the rating on our Island
Experience to “only the 2nd best smooth
jazz festival in the world.” Because of our
other ‘In All the World No Place Like This
for Jazz.’ Way up in the Summertime
Southern California Mountains where Last
Weekend in June our JazzTrax Summer
Music Festival happens Right ON Big
Bear Lake. The Lake where Elvis Presley
once filmed movies.
Where Bonanza
once filmed their television episodes.
Where Roy Rogers kept his boat. Where
Mel Blanc, the voice of all the Warner
Bros. cartoon characters like Bugs Bunny,
Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Woody
Woodpecker, first bought a cabin in
1945 where his son Noel still spends his
complete Summers.
June 20, 21, 22, 2012 will be our 7th
annual. As you sit on a lakeside lawn in
the Mountain Village of Big Bear Lake, the
Stars of Smooth Jazz performing from a
FLOATING STAGE. A Mountain Lake In
Your Face. Perfect summer temperatures.

power boats all getting drawn by the

sound from around what was the largest
manmade lake in the world when
dammed up in the late 1800’s, over to
the JazzTrax Floating Stage to see what
this pure summertime delight is all
about….. even a Pirate Ship!
It took us a few tries to figure out Big Bear
even as I’ve kept a cabin there since my
son was born 12 years ago. First taking
the Snow Summit Sky Chair to the very top
of the mountain, the entire lake back
dropped down below before I realized it
was too high an altitude. Then to a Forest
Service Discovery Stage in the woods.
Cancelled one year by the combination of
a nasty divorce on top a nasty recession.
Then the most magical location for a
mountain festival imaginable simply
appeared when my friend Charlie
Brewster of the Robin Hood Resort asked
me to join him there at a fundraiser for the
local “Trash Dump company!” Ask the
growing crowd, now coming and raving
and glowing about this newest festival

location on a mountain lake up above the
clouds.
One prominent smooth jazz
industry publisher stating after seeing our
Big Bear Lake venue for the first time this
summer that the Lakeside Lawn, the
Floating Stage, the JazzTrax Summer
Music Festival were now her favorite
smooth jazz venue in the entire
Continental United States.
Enjoy this, the Grand Daddy of ‘em
All…..on an Island 26 miles out to sea.
Oldest smooth jazz festival in America.
Just voted BEST Jazz Festival in America.
Smooth Jazz Island.
Dancing on the
Beach at Midnight. Fresh Fish caught just
that day in the ocean off the Island. Then
don’t miss the newest JazzTrax Magic of
late June . Our floating stage on Big Bear
Lake in the Summertime Southern
California Mountains.
In All the World…No Place Like
THESE…For Jazz
Don’t ever Miss the Magic…..Don’t EVER
….wait another year!
In All The Wo r l d . . . No Place Like This for Jazz!

The Main Point in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania.
His drumming the controlled beat stabilizing
of 1975's 'Born to Run.' July 1993 chance
sidewalk meeting outside Carnegie Deli with
Conan O'Brien led to 16 years leading his
house band. Sidekick Andy Richter's 2000
departure left Max as the show's nightly
“second banana.” Bruce Springsteen reunited the E Street Band in 1999 and the
Weinberg-Springsteen Rule broke normal
network TV standards. Because the Reunion
Tour was one of the highest profile reunions
in rock history NBC felt the long term benefit
to Conan's appeal and Jimmy Vivino (now
Conan's house band) covered when conc e rts conflicted with Late Night with Conan
O'Brien. This arrangement continued
through The Boss further comeback albums
and tours including the Halftime perf o rmance with Springsteen Febru a ry 2009 at
Super Bowl XLIII. He and 3 sons are fans of
New Jersey Devils and play hockey on their
2-acre pond in front of their house. Daughter
Ali Weinberg became an assistant to NBC
News re p o rter Chuck Todd. In 2010 Conan
and Max mutually decided to go separate
ways as 'Conan' debuted on TBS with Max
forming a 15 piece Big Band ensemble playing the music of Frank Sinatra, Buddy Rich,
Count Basie and Maynard Ferguson.
