ARBOR ROSE GAZETTE 6033 East Arbor Avenue, Mesa, Arizona 85206 Phone: 480.654.8200 Mesa's Leader in Memory Care, Assisted Living and Adult Day Care SEPTEMBER 2012 'BEAUTIFUL' ARBOR ROSE VOLUNTEER RETIRES Roseanne Thompson (85 years old) is hanging up her "volunteer shingle." Roseanne felt destined to volunteer at Arbor Rose because when her husband Roger was ill, Arbor Rose Hospice did a wonderful job caring for him. And in her way, she wanted to “give back” what they lovingly and selflessly gave to Roger and the family. Roseanne’s favorite volunteer assignments were helping out in the BINGO room as well as the monthly birthday celebrations. She truly enjoyed sitting one-one-one with a participant while singing or talking about yesteryear. The following is from her son Ron Thompson My Mom was born in Upstate New York September 19, 1926. Her nickname in her younger East Coast life was "Torchy" because of her fire red hair. But most of the time she was called Bess, her middle name. I don't know much about her mother, but I do know that Roseanne’s mother died at a very young age. My Mom was raised most of her childhood by her father Earl Thomas, a commercial truck driver. During WWII Adaline worked as a riveter on military aircraft. Yes, she was one of the original "Rosie the Riveters". She says because of her small size she was able to fit into very tight spaces and was paid at a higher rate than the men because of it! Adaline, you are truly one of America's Greatest Hero's!! She says her favorite thing about Arbor Rose is "all the new friends I've made." Her one piece of advice to the youth of today would be "Love what you do and enjoy life!" Her favorite saying is "Let's go shopping!" Adaline, congratulations on this well deserved recognition. Thank you for your service to our country. From all of us at Arbor Rose we love you!! JOAN CHIARELLA Arbor Rose Participant of the Month Joan has been selected as the Arbor Rose Adult Day Club Participant of the month for September 2012. Joan is the only daughter of Nunzio and Philomena DiRuzzio. She has three brothers, Charles, Michael and Robert. In August of 1956 in Rye, New York Joan married Leonard Chiarella. Leonard like Joan was traveling through life without hearing and voice. The couple lived on the Cohen Estate where Leonard was the estate caretaker and machinist. Joan worked in the tomato canning factory. Now, Joan enjoys three days a week at the Arbor Rose Adult Day Club. She loves to knit, crochet, draw, swim and watch comedy TV shows. Going to play the slots at the local casino was one of her joys until they replaced the coins dropping into the tray with paper voucher. Joan loves being in family gatherings, especially spending time with children. She is always happy and her warm personality can light up any room. Joan, congratulations on this welldeserved recognition. We all love you and are so glad you are apart of the Arbor Rose family. Caty, Director of Activities, spent over a month preparing for this event. Some of the games that the Participants and Residents participated in included dunking the Arbor Rose staff in the dunk tank, playing ring toss, knocking over cans with bean bags, fishing for prizes, throwing darts at a balloon board, making a sand art project and finished up the day with a pie eating contest. Those staff members who participated in the dunk tank were Alex (certified caregiver), James (fleet driver), Cameron (food services), Karl (chaplain with East Valley Hospice) and Darcy (Arbor Rose Executive Director). "I could not believe how many Participants and Residents wanted to see myself and the other staff members all washed up!" stated Darcy. "It was one of the most fun days I have ever had at Arbor Rose in the past 12 years. It was a simply amazing day. In fact one Participant has told all of us about every 5 minutes the day after the carnival of how much fun he had. That's what is all about, fun and making memories!" SEPTEMBER 2012 ARBOR ROSE GAZETTE Page 9 Rosanne retires continued Roseanne has been a homemaker all of her married life to Roger. Before that she lived most of her adult single life in San Francisco as a stenographer for the Fibreboard Corporation which produced shipping/product containers. She was motivated to GO WEST as a young adult by her relatives from Southern California and decided to make SF her home where she quickly made lots of friends mostly from work. She married Roger in Reno, NV in the early 60's and adopted his 3 children (Elaine, Glenn, Peggy). I am her only child and arrived shortly thereafter which she claims as the immaculate conception! In a nutshell, my Mom is all about hard work, personal responsibility, and discipline. She still holds to those standards today. My Dad was type "B" and got along well with it, I'm hard wired with it, but it drove the other kids nuts some times!!! When we were kids she would portion our food in an "assembly line of plates" and state that we had "sufficient” [amount]. She has a kitchen apron given to her as a gift years ago which says...."I KNOW I'M EFFICIENT.....please tell me I'm BEAUTIFUL" We always got a kick out of that! From all of us at Arbor Rose, thank you Roseanne for all the love you have shown towards all of the Resident's, Participants, Family members and Staff of Arbor Rose. You are always welcome to drop in for a cup of coffee and a few warm hugs! We all love you Roseanne, you will be missed.
