International Womens Day
Lord, make me an instrument of peace.
Bless all women who daily strive to bring peace to
their communities, their homes and their hearts.
Give them strength to continue to turn swords into
ploughshares.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love.
We pray for all women who face prejudice,
inequality and gender disparities. Help us see and
to face the discrimination against women in all the
many forms it may take.
Where there is injury, pardon.
Comfort all women who suffer from the pain of
war, violence, and abuse. Help them to become
instruments of their own reconciliation and peace.
Where there is darkness, light; where there is
untruth, truth.
Comfort all women who struggle in the darkness
of abuse, poverty, and loneliness. May we stand
with them in light to acknowledge their suffering
and strive to remove the burdens of shame or
embarrassment.
Where there is sadness, new joy.
Help us to see the strength and goodness in all
women and men.
Transform our hearts to celebrate the love and
grace of all people.
And may we be blessed with the courage of St Clare
of Assisi to follow our own path of love for you and
all sisters and brothers.

Principal’s Message
Dear Parents and Friends,
It has been a very eventful week to begin March. Our Year 10s spent the
week involved in their Work Education program, a very necessary and
engaging series of sessions exploring life in the workforce and future
career pathways planning. This is in preparation for their Work Experience
week later in the year and is a worthwhile preparation of students for
meaningful thinking and discussion with their parents regarding subject
selection and future tertiary pathways.
International Women's Day was celebrated by the Community Service
committee who showed an inspiring documentary about the life of
Afghan woman, Malala Yousafzai, who risked her life to enhance Afghani
and Pakistani girls’ right to education. Many Year 10 students were also
enthralled by Yassmin Abdel-Magied, a young Muslim woman who also
had an inspiring story. Her story showed what can be achieved, the
importance of looking for opportunities and/or creating them yourself
and about being confident about working in areas where few women are
seen (Yassmin is a mechanical engineer who works on a remote oil and
gas rig).
Our Year 11s have been in Canberra, where the focus was on their
developing sense of citizenship and what that means to young
Australians. They were fortunate enough to view the High Court in
session and toured the new National Museum of Australia, not only a
magnificent example of modern architecture but also housing artefacts
from 50,000 years of Australian history and culture. By all reports the
new accommodation at Leumeah Lodge was excellent and one of their
highlights included an evening viewing Enlighten Canberra, where many
cultural institutions are starkly lit after dark to reveal unexpected delights.
Our Year 12 cohort travelled to Blampied near Daylesford for Retreat. We
will hear more of their trip in next week’s newsletter.
Our Inter-school swim team is to be congratulated for their magnificent
effort to come third in the SCSA swimming competition. Challenged by
the fact that no Year 11s were available for the event. the Killester girls
united to be the only school to enter competitors in every event - a terrific
display of teamwork and camaraderie.
We thank all students for their ongoing positive contributions to these
important events in the school and to their dedicated teachers who are
working tirelessly to enable this breadth of rich experiences that the girls
were able to participate in.

Be Alert to Symptons and Signs of
Contagious Diseases
The College has been notified by the Health
Department of the recent outbreak of
chickenpox and measles.
Chickenpox is an infection that presents with a
low-grade fever and rash.
Measles usually begins with a fever, sore throat,
red eyes and a cough. A rash typically develops
around three to seven days after the first
symptons, generally starting on the face and
then spreading to the rest of the body.
SCSA Swimming Carnival
On the 8th of March the Killester Interschool swim team made their way
into MSAC for the annual SCSA swimming sports. It may have been an
incredibly warm night, but that didn’t stop us having one of the biggest
teams in recent years, with 50 girls from Years 7, 8, 9, 10 and 12 all
competing.
The girls started the night off with a bang, with all three medley relay
teams finishing in the top three. And this did not stop there, as the girls
continued to feature heavily in the top three across all events.
Although we were missing our Year 11 swimmers, as they were off on
camp, Killester managed to be the only team to field a competitor in
every event on the night, and all girls should be congratulated on this
huge achievement. And it was this commitment from the girls, that saw
them finish third overall on the night.
A huge congratulations goes to our Year 12 girls, swimming in their final
meet, as they managed to finish second overall in the senior division.
Congratulations also go to our junior and intermediate teams, who both
finished third in their age groups.
I would like to thank all the parents who came along to support their
daughters on the night, as well as all the parents who managed to get
the girls to our early morning swim sessions, without this support the
night would not have been as successful as it was.
And a final thank you to all staff who helped out on the night and
in the lead up to the event, your assistance and support was greatly
appreciated by all the girls.

Year 7 Camp
On Wednesday 2nd of March Year 7 students
and selected teachers arrived at Springvale
Town Hall. The students came with their
luggage in hand and a smile on their face. We
all were very eager to know what companions
were in our activity and cabin groups. Once all
of the luggage was packed onto the buses, we
headed off to Phillip Island. The parents waved
goodbye. Some were even crying!!
The Beach
After the Wild life park we headed down to the beach! At the beach we
got changed an ready for some fun. There was a sandcastle competition.
Mostly everyone was playing with the sand, there were also times when
the teachers called class by class to go into the water and play! It was
like a stampede of eager children who wanted to go into the water. The
water was probably the coolest part at the beach.
After the beach the entire group of Year 7s and teachers made the
journey to Phililp Island youth camp. At the camp we were greeted by
Michael, he explained the rules and suddenly, before we knew it, we were
already off doing our activities. These included the GIANT swing, the
wonderous Flying Fox , hat and jewellery making, the swimming pool,
trampolines, low ropes course and more....just to name a few. Over the
next couple of days the Year 7 students participated in many activities.
Camp!
The Wildlife Park
All the students were jumping out of their
seats. We were highly enthusiastic about going
to the wildlife park. But quickly and quietly the
teachers settled everyone down and we made
our way off into the wildlife park. Once the
rules had been made clear we collected our
buckets of food and headed off!! We could feed
lots of different animals. Some of the students
excitedly made their way over to the open
kangaroo enclosure. Some found it fun others
found it creepy for others like Kanishka Kapil.
Isabella Katipa interviewed her and she said
“The enclosure was cool but it was scary too.
The Kangaroos would actually jump at you.”
There were other animals too like Wallabies,
Emus and Koalas.
The Emus chased after some students and
teachers!
After “Killester’s Got Talent” was over and the winners where announced,
we were off to vote for the Year 7 leaders for 2016. The candidates gave
speeches regarding why they thought they would be a good leader!
Finally it was the day to go home, we were all sad about leaving camp but
at the same time we were all full of joy because we were about to see our
parents again! On the last day we had to clean our cabins and the camp.
We were all given areas to make sure there was no rubbish. After that was
the fun part. Most of the activities were open to go on again! We were
given free time to enjoy the activities for one last time.
Camp was amazing but your parents are someone you will always miss. I
hope everyone goes on camp next year too!

Year 9 Visual Art Excursion
On the 23rd of February, the two Year 9 Visual Art Classes visited ‘The
Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia’, the National Gallery of Victoria’s gallery
for Australian art. It was a very hot 38 degree day, which was just right
for walking around the nice, cool gallery. At the main entrance our
education guides greeted us and directed us to store our bags and
handed us little fold out chairs. We thought they would be horribly
uncomfortable, but were actually perfect to carry around the gallery
allowing us to have a seat whilst listening to our education guide and
studying the art.
The focus of our visit to the gallery was to study and learn about our
Australian Indigenous art. Our guide told us about the tribes that lived
in Australia before white settlement. We learnt about the way they lived,
women’s roles in Indigenous communities and the stories behind their
art depicted through symbols. We further learned about their rituals
and ceremonies, still being practiced today. The way Indigenous people
used to live and the way they tell their stories through pictures, dance
and art is truly fascinating. The first exhibition we saw was in a big
room full of Hermannsburg AFL pots. The ‘Hermannsburg Potters’ are a
group of Aboriginal women, who design and make the pots, belong to
a small community 130 kilometres south-west of Alice Springs. The pots
had football players sculptured on top of them. These were Indigenous
players doing a symbolic and/or memorable action. For example, there
was a pot with Nicky Winmar in 1993 lifting his shirt to show he was
proud to be black. Along with these pots, the team flags hung from the
roof and there was a replica football ground, making the room a fun,
colourful display. Following the pots, we visited more rooms and saw
more art, ranging from very early Aboriginal art through to present day
Aboriginal art, whether it be a neon light sculpture or a painting of a
kangaroo on bark. I think the way that artists express their art and can tell
a story that everyone deciphers differently is really amazing.
VCAL Guest Speaker for
Work Related Skills
On Friday the 4/3/2016 Mr Barrett, a student
teacher at Killester College, came and spoke
to us about the varied jobs that he had done,
the reasons people worked and different work
conditions. We really appreciate him taking the
time to share his work journey with us.
Thank you, Mrs Wilman and the VCAL students
Lastly, we carried our little fold out chairs to a massive sculpture, metres
tall by metres wide, a maze of barbwire and iron that caught everyone’s
eye. We all had different theories as to what it may have meant. As we
sat down in discussion, I think all of us realised how much deeper things
can be if you take a second glance and talk about it. Everyone had such
different opinions and we all loved sharing ideas. To conclude the day, we
had half an hour to look around the gallery ourselves, taking notes and
analysing our favourite piece of art before setting foot outside into the
scorching, hot sun.

Music - Year 7 Choir
Congratulations to the Year 7 choir who had their first performance last
week after just three rehearsals. The choir performed "Like I'm Gonna
Lose You" and "One Call Away" at the Year 7 camp to an appreciative
audience of students and staff. Well done to our soloists Anna, Kartika,
Isabella and Lynette.
Year 7 choir will now be rehearsing on Friday lunchtime in the classroom
of Maria Goretti. New members are welcome at any time.
