Last Friday we held the final of our 60th Celebration events at the Dingley
International where around 250 people gathered for a Dinner Dance. The
Dance part was superfluous for most of the evening as the laughter and
chatter drowned out the music. There is something very special about
listening to the sounds of people re-igniting old friendships and sharing
stories. There was a lot of joy on the evening and regardless of the
decade people came to Killester, all were connected by the rich Brigidine
environment of the school. Past principals, Sisters Ann Boyd and Helen
Toohey shared a few of their memories with the gathering, and Sister Pat
Dimick, a past student of Killester who went on to join the Brigidine order,
led us in a blessing at the commencement of the evening. At one point, a
group of past students from the 70s stood up and sang the school song!
There was a sense of gratitude from the women, who with the wisdom
of time, were appreciative of the experiences offered to them when they
attended Killester.
There was a different excitement at Killester last night - the excitement
that comes from anticipation as 2016 Year 7 parents and students
attended a BBQ and conversation evening. Parents and daughters
gathered around tables talking about their hopes and fears for starting
a new school. It was a wonderful way to meet new families and share
common concerns. After a BBQ dinner, special guest, Andrew Fuller,
addressed the gathering to discuss resilience and how parents can
encourage their daughters to develop their brain to maximise both
learning and resilience. It was an enjoyable presentation and many of
us discovered we are quite uncoordinated when it comes to some of the
games he gave us. My thanks to parents from the Killester Involvement
Committee who cooked the food for everyone, the parents did a
wonderful job, as did our current Year 7 Leaders who greeted and assisted
during the evening.
It has been a busy week with Year 12 exams coming to a close and Year
11 exams commencing. Our Year 9 Duke of Ed girls have travelled to
Lorne on an overnight camp and bushwalk and we look forward to their
safe return today. Of course, all Year 9 girls went to on their annual 3 day
camp to Lake Eildon just 2 weeks ago - congratulations to all the girls for
what has been reported to be a fantastic camp.

The girls kept good spirits entering into the different activities and
sleeping in the tents - the only complaint was from a couple of teachers
who found they were not as young as they used to be when it came to
sleeping on the hard ground - wisdom has its price. Best wishes to you
and your family for the coming week.

Library News - VCE VCD Book Jackets
When is a book not a book?! When it is a piece of 'DESIGN'.
The beautiful book covers on display in the Library are not actually books
to be borrowed and read. They are in fact graphic designs created by our
talented VCE Year 11 Visual Communication Design students. Some are
covers for actual stories with new covers designed by the students, while
others are concept ideas for books that could be written with covers
designed by the students. Look inside the book covers for the designer’s
photo, name and profile. So there you have it …a book that is not a book
but a piece of 'DESIGN'.

Killester 60th Dinner Celebrations

Google Expeditions
Last Friday Killester hosted a visit from the
Google Expeditions Pioneer Program. A
representative came with all the equipment
necessary to host an expedition - a 3D virtual
visit to some of the world’s great landmarks
and scenic views.
Expeditions uses a 3D device called "Google
Cardboard" which is a simple viewer holding
a mobile phone running a special Google
Cardboard app.
All students in years 8 and 9 were treated to
an expedition, and there were many gasps
of amazement from students and teachers
alike at the 3D immersive experience, with
some students suffering from vertigo when
experiencing the dizzying heights of rock
climbers on Yosemite's El Capitan.
I would like to thank the students and
teachers for giving up class time so that all
could experience the expeditions, and also
thank google for making Killester part of the
Expeditions Pioneer Program.

As a student at Killester, I, Jessica Hackett, learned that Strength and Kindliness are not
mere words: they are truths to live by. We should all have the moral strength and courage
to be true to who we are and to be welcoming to others.
Returning 15 years later to teach Drama and English has been a fantastic opportunity to
return to a place where such truths are held dear and are experienced every day.
So what does strength and kindliness mean in action beyond the Killester gates? It means
speaking for those who can’t speak; standing for those who can’t stand; walking freely for
those who are not free to walk. I am planning to hand deliver a petition to the House of
Representatives in regards to the rights of asylum seekers in the hope that they can finally
be treated with dignity and respect. And I plan to walk.
I want to show our Parliament - our government - that the people of Australia are kind and
strong. That we are strong enough and kind enough to give welcome to those who most
need it. To do this I will be walking from Melbourne to Canberra to deliver this petition,
obtaining as many signatures as I can along the way. While walking, I will document
through film the ways in which people help me (food, shelter, etc.). I will also visit
organisations and individuals who are helping and supporting asylum seekers and
refugees. I’ll visit people and document stories from those who have settled here. People
who know that Australia is a land of justice and compassion. People we have welcomed.
