Killester College www.killester.vic.edu.au newsletter Friday 1st March 2013 Acting Co-Principal’s Message Dear Parents and Friends, Prayer “I was a stranger and you welcomed me.” May the way we look upon one another help others to exist. May our smile bring warmth. May our words help to sustain life. May our presence become a support. May God our Father grant strength to our testimony. May Jesus Christ direct our deeds and may the Spirit guide our thoughts. As this is being written Pope Benedict has begun his new ministry and using his words, “a ministry and life of prayer.” Cardinals are making their way to Rome to decide on his successor. I’m sure there are those much more learned than ourselves that will say that there have been more significant times in the history of the Catholic church when a newly elected Pope has been elected. I’m certain, however, that no-one will argue that this newly elected Pope will enter a challenging time in the modern history of the church. Benedict, the first pope in nearly 600 years to step down voluntarily said, “I felt that my strength was diminished”. He asked God to help him make the decision “not for my good, but for the good of the church.” We hope and pray that Benedict’s successor also has the strength, vision and discernment to lead the church for the good of the church. Today is the World Day of Prayer. Since 1941, the World Day of Prayer has been organized by Church Women United, an ecumenical Christian group of women who work for justice and peace. The theme for 2013 is based on the gospel text of Matthew, “I was a stranger and you welcomed me.” If we reflected for a moment, as individuals, on how we welcome the strangers into our lives, How would we rate ourselves ? For a moment if we reflected on how our politicians (of all persuasions) should be rated in terms of welcoming of strangers, the refugees and asylum seekers? How would we rate them ? The invitation and challenge is there, through this World Day of Prayer for us all to welcome into our lives the strangers, the vulnerable and the unloved. This week a group of senior students, with Ms Lappin and Mr O’Neill, attended a two day Justice and Democracy conference on the theme of Human Trafficking. This conference brings many Brigidine schools together and is designed to be a forum to inform and share. It also enables the schools to set the theme and direction of social justice and action for the year. From all reports the days and the theme were challenging, engaging and confronting for our students. Congratulations to all who attended and we look forward to you articulating and leading the 2013 JDF priorities at Killester in the coming months. Late last week two Yr 10 students were given the privilege of attending and speaking at the official launch of the Monash University Learn, Experience, Access Professions (LEAP). Rossa To and Thameena Mohamed spoke to a room full of dignitaries on their experiences of this program and how it is exposing them to knowledge and understanding of potential career pathways. The Hon Sharon Bird, Parliamentary Secretary Learning Together, Growing Together for Education and Skills, commented specifically on their presentation stating how wonderful their presentation was. Many guests provided feedback to the effect that, “hearing our students’ perspectives was a highlight of the event”. Congratulations girls and our thanks is extended to Mrs Vicki Alexellis for supporting both these two students and the LEAP program. Week Ahead March Monday 4th Open Morning Tuesday 5th Mac Attack Parent Evening 7pm Wednesday 6th Year 7 Camp Yr 10 RE Incursion Thursday 7th Year 7 Camp Yr 9 Dance Incursion Friday 8th Year 7 Camp Return 3.10pm Yr 8 LOTE Incursion Homework Club Tuesday & Thursday Today approximately 45 Yr 10 students undertook a training day to become Yr 10 Peer Support leaders. This is a significant and important well-being program in the school that gives invaluable leadership training for Yr 10s and provides wonderful opportunities for our Yr 10s to support our Yr 7s as they continue their program of transition. From all reports it has been an engaging and challenging day for those being trained. The leadership team has this week begun interviews for our Yr 7 2014 intake. It is a very humbling experience to hear of the high regard our school is held in the community. At the same time it provides us with the challenge to continue striving, not only to maintain, but to further improve, our standing in the community. This only happens, as our school theme suggests, by Learning Together and Growing Together. Next week our Yr 7 students make their annual pilgrimage to Cowes, Phillip Island for their camp. Experience tells us that, above all other transition events, the Yr 7 camp is the most significant in terms of building the foundations of positive peer to peer relations and student and staff relationships. These peer relationships very often, not only last for Yr 7, but continue to grow far beyond this initial year. We hope all the Yr 7s and the staff attending have a wonderfully positive experience and we look forward to hearing of your experiences upon your return. All the best for the coming week. It would be very useful for Parents to also bring your daughter’s laptop. Learning Together, Growing Together Swimming Sports Last Monday as the sun blazed to a top of 37 and the water shimmered, many eager girls made their way down to the pool for a fantastic day of fun and competitive swimming. The Pool had been set up earlier in the morning by excited House and Sports Leaders anxious to get the day started. As the Waterslide was out of order many of girls found ways to keep themselves entertained and occupied, other than when they were swimming. Events such as dancing to music while having a game of volleyball as well as offering to help the staff run the day by doing little tasks to keep them busy were some of the activities undertaken. The Sports Committee once again sold cans of soft drinks while the House Leaders also sold jelly. All money raised going to our chosen charities. Another highlight of the day was the Year 12 vs. Staff race. It was a close start but then the students just started to edge out in front. Unfortunately for the first time in a number of years the staff lost the race. There were also huge times swam at the pool with a number of records being broken. A massive congratulations to Samantha Choy, Elise Tjong, Nicole Anbar, Morgan Thomas, Maggie McPhee and Amy Rodrigo who now hold the current records for a variety of events. Congratulations to the Year Level Champions who swum in most races during the day and represented their Houses proudly. They were Year 7 Tara Xuereb (R) Year 8 Vivian Thai (M) Year 9 Morgan Thomas (R) Year 10 Maggie McPhee (C) Year 11 Hayley Jones (M) Year 12 Sarah Fischer (M) The winning House for 2013 was Chisholm with a total of 698points. Congratulations to their House Leaders Amy Rodrigo and Sarah Burren for all their hard work. The final results of the day were: 1stChisholm 2ndMacKillop 3rdRomero 4thBrigid A big thank you goes out to all the House Leaders who had worked hard in the lead up to the Big Event and for their running around and recruiting during the day! Thank you also to all staff for their help during the day, it ran so smoothly! One more thank you to all swimmers in the pool and to those who helped during the carnival. Without your participation our House swimming sports wouldn't have been such a success. We now look forward to the SCSA Div 2 Swimming Carnival on Thursday 21st March at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre. Sally McAndrew AFL Trainee . Learning Together, Growing Together VCE Art Excursion VCE Art Excursion Getting inspired! The year 12 Art students participated in a kick start program run by Art Education Victoria at the Dax centre in the University of Melbourne. The day started at 9 am in the auditorium of the Daxccentre by listening to 2 students talk about how to get started on folio and how to develop ideas and concepts in the SAT folio. This was very inspirational to listen to as students spoke about their work and the problems and successes they encountered on their art journey in 2012. This was followed by a wonderful discussion of the analytical frameworks at the gallery “ Dax museum”. The VCAA state reviewer also gave an introduction of the SAT 2013 CRITERIA for folio and outlined key points. After lunch students gathered outside the waterwall at the NGV International to preview the current exhibition - “RallyContemproary Art from Indonesia.” As we entered the gallery students were encouraged to sit and draw comics. These drawings will be part of an artwork by the artist, the girls were so thrilled that their drawings will be used. From this space we stopped to see and listen to the installation in Federation court titled “The Commoner” by Jompet Kuswidananto and Eko Nugroho. This was truly an amazing interactive artwork that was very powerful in its presentation. Contemporary art is supposed to challenge, provoke and question and this certainly did for the VCE art students. H ope to see everyone there! This week seven students from Year 11 went with Ms Lappin and myself to Holy Cross in Templestowe. They joined nine Brigidine schools from Victoria, South Australia, New South Wales and Queensland with about sixty five students representing their respective social justice groups. The key focus of the two-day forum was to raise awareness of Human Trafficking. Students learned about the exploitation, mainly of women and children who are stripped of their rights, freedom and dignity in order to be abused in the sex industry and to be in restaurants and businesses such as the clothing trade. Last week you would have seen the area of Fair Trade, highlighted, with the production of forced and slave labour in the production of the cocoa bean. They learned and discussed ideas of human dignity and looked at government and religious bodies as well as organisations that speak out against and advocate for people affected by trafficking. The students were impressive in their participation and responses. I look forward to them imparting this new knowledge to others and the implementation of their action plan over the coming weeks.
