Food Technology and Hospitality students from Years 10, 11 and 12 enjoyed a brilliant day out to be a part of the audience for the popular cooking show Ready, Steady, Cook! Knowing that we would be inside a television studio for a good few hours, without a break, it was essen al that, we had a chance to be well fed before filming started. To this end, we took a detour to the Sydney Fish Markets where some students feasted on a gorgeous seafood pla er (even though it was only 9.30am). We watched the filming of two episodes and clapped our hands endlessly! We also had to “oooh”, “aaah” and say things like “mmmm, drizzle” and “mmmm” dollop on cue. Another highlight of the whole experience was the audience ‘warm up guy’ – his comedic genius had us all laughing throughout the whole day. It was very interes ng to see how such a show was put together and students saw first hand how top chefs can prepare delicious meals in record me. Of course, we had to make our decision between capsicums or tomatoes and the vo ng was hotly contested. The highlight of the day was when our very own Sandy Li won the pres gious Ready, Steady, Cook apron by outdoing all other audience members to come first in the talent quest. Did you know that it is possible to put your whole fist inside your mouth! Thanks to all the students who par cipated so enthusias cally – Ms Cush and I had a fantas c and memorable day with you all. Ms Keller and Ms Cush 5 KATRIN ODISHO YEAR 12 WORK EXPERIENCE WITH CABRAMATTA POLICE Earlier this year we were very fortunate to have one of our Year 12 students Katrin Odish, par cipate in a week long work experience program with Cabrama a police. On the final day of the program the students were put through various real life scenarios and finished off the week by partaking in the physical tests, such as the beep test that they would be required to successfully complete when they enrol at the Police College. Katrin Odish thoroughly enjoyed the experience. She hopes to join the Federal Police Force in the near future and is excited she was able to complete the program and gain valuable insight into the life of a police officer. This campaign is for be er funding for public schools. It started earlier this year a er an inquiry, called the Gonski Review, warned of the urgent need to invest more. The campaign involves parents, teachers, principals and community members in every part of Australia. Dear neighbour, As someone who is passionate about the educa on of children, I wanted to share some important informa on with you. Right now, the future funding of local public schools is being decided. State and federal leaders are making the decision in response to the Gonski Review of school funding. That review found an urgent need to invest more in educa on and local public schools and to be er target that funding. It is the best opportunity we have had in many years to get more resources into our schools. Be er funding would make a world of difference for our children through things like: · Smaller class sizes · Greater assistance for students with special needs · Addi onal specialist teachers in areas like literacy and numeracy The issue is some poli cians are reluctant to invest more in our kids. No surprise, they need to be persuaded. If the educa on of local children ma ers to you, there is an easy way to help. Please do what I did and register your support at www.igiveagonski.com.au You can also send a message telling the poli cians our kids deserve this. It only takes a few minutes and it will help a lot. Thanks for reading this. It ended up being closer than we had an cipated, but we s ll prevailed winning 30‐28. With this victory, our team made it to Central Venue where all the victors of the first round go to for their next match. Our first match at Central Venue was against Leumeah High School where we were victorious by a 20 point margin. As a result of our victory, we qualified for the next round and were to face Liverpool Boys High School. It was a close game in the beginning, but unfortunately for Fairvale, Liverpool managed to pull away to record a victory. Despite the loss, everyone on our team enjoyed the experience and had an awesome day. We look forward to progressing even further next year! Pa ence, tolerance and overcoming adversity were all contribu ng factors to overcoming these obstacles and assisted in the success of our journey. Throughout the three days we carried approximately 20kg of provisions which proved difficult for many students. However, comple ng the hike provided us each with newly found confidence and demonstrated our physical and psychological capability. At mes the condi ons were almost unbearable, but as a team we supported one another and tackled difficult weather condi ons. Through this experience we rediscovered our iden es and realised our true poten al. We over‐ came all the obstacles presented and thereby grew as people and as friends. It was a mem‐ orable journey which we will remember as very tough but also a great bonding experi‐ ence. The hike consisted of 45 kilometres trekking over varied terrain. We carried all items to last us for three days. Mr Hull and Mrs Hull accompanied our class for which we are extremely grateful. By: Karina Jage CONGRATULATIONS Congratula ons to Tiffany Nguyen for successfully comple ng the Na onal Arts School HSC extension prac cal course. Tiffany had her body of work, a series of photographs based on Fairfield's older genera on playing chess, exhibited at the gallery. 10 19 Year 12 RYDA Program The Year 12 excursion to Ryder was a very memorable experience to all of us, as it expanded our knowledge on the road. I found Ryder to be a very fun and educa onal experience. The rotary volunteers were organised and taught us the choices and outcomes we make on the road everyday. Through listening to some personal experiences that people have faced at such a young age, we had the realisa on that there will be consequences for your ac ons. There was a prac cal session where, it was demonstrated the distance it takes to stop a vehicle travelling different speeds. This was a very exhilara ng experience, mainly because the driver would stop us out of no where, to show us the cause of the stopping distance. The Ryder excursion gave me a be er understanding on the laws and regula ons on the road that I was unaware of. It was a great experience and taught us a lot about the issues we face on the road everyday, and the importance of being a safe driver. I learnt things that I will remember for the rest of my life. By Kris na Toma During the RYDA program I took in many messages that were aimed at young adults around the ages of 17‐18. There were some very deep stories that taught me various les‐ sons to give young par cipants the cause to stop, reflect and consider their decisions as a passenger or a driver. I also learnt about hazards, risks and distrac ons, and how to avoid or minimise their impacts. The most enjoyable part of the RYDA Program for me was the “Stopping Distances” session which involved stopping a vehicle travelling at different speeds. This session also highlighted the huge impact an extra 10km/h can have. 18 11 12 GOODBYE 12 Year Rawa Kacho Aneta Ka‐ noun Hanien Karibi Claudia Keo Henry Kha Karen Khao Jacky Kho Juliet Khochaba Phillip Khorn Yohan Khoshaba Darren Khou Ratanak Kim Stephen Kohari Dusko Kopanja Karina Kouck Ma hew Krogh Semir Kurtovic Sedef Kutsal Kheven Ky Cindy La Man a Mele Latapu Sco Lay Akaluk Le Anne Le Catherine Le David Le Jason Le Meegan Le Sirina Le Chanel Lea Sandy Li Sui Yein Li Wendy Lieu Lindy Lim Sarah Lim Jonathan Lin Simon Loi Rosary Lotam Rachel Lucas Anna Ly Anna Ly Kenny Ly Simon Ly Jacqueline Ma Ivy Mach Cindy Mai Nicolas Maidana Chris na Ma hes Feleb Ma Rakeeb Mohammed Antonio Mu Ajdin Mujanovic Aleisha Needham Peter Ngo Vivian Ngo Roger Ngorn Andy Nguyen Caroline Nguyen David Nguyen Jackie Nguyen Jes n Nguyen Kevin Nguyen Larry Nguyen Michael Nguyen Michelle Nguyen Peter Nguyen Peter Nguyen Philip Nguyen Sarah Nguyen Tri Quoc Nguyen Joanna Nhian Ma as Nicola Katrin Odish Betel Orahem Rodrigo Ordenes Tanya Or z Tiziana Pa avino Bich hang Pham Brian Pham Phoebe Ha Pham Janet Phuong Peter Pigadas Jelena Plavsic Peter Popovic Kharnin Pou Tedda Pou Amelia Qata Saly Qaysar Jimmy Quigg Georgia Quigg Karriza Rial Christopher Ristancev Mart Rizqou Lidya Saliba Rebecca Sanchez Sephanna Seak Minh Seng Sara Shinko Maryam Shlimon Nicholas Silveira Alin slewa Marina Sok Kevin Som Kris na Stojanovic Sivas Suleiman Deric Sy Hiep Ta Belinda Taing Angel Tang Sue Tang Susanne Tang Ma hew Ta ersall Jacob Te Carina Thai Nhu Yen To Orseeba Toma Kur s Tor Allan Tran Chris ne Tran Jimmy Tran John Tran Natalie Tran Shara Tran Steven Tran Emily Tran Tiffanie Tran Vilynna Tran David Trinh Kevin Trinh Sophie Trinh Bich Yen Truong Ka es Truong Lilly Truong Tony Truong Tony Truoug Jason Truc Nha Thu Tu James Tuuholoaki Ma hew Tuuholoaki Angelo Tzaidas Kevin Ven Jozeph Verdeh Ne y Vo Peter Vu Karl Vue Jovana Vukelic Ryan Wenholz Inleel William Chris ne Youel Liva Yousif Rivan Yousif Robert Zindo When life gives you a hundred reasons to cry, show life that you have a thousand reasons to smile.
