CHER AND THE S.D.A.C.C.
I’m not sure how most of you became involved with CHER, but when I began sponsoring children with CHER about 3 and half
years ago, it took quite an extensive search
to find this ministry within our church. My
husband and I felt led to sponsor children,
but did not want to go through any of the
more common large programs, with the
hope that we could find one within the Seventh-day Adventist church. When we discovered CHER, we were very pleased with
its mission, ministry and management, but
were surprised at how unknown the ministry was. It then became one of my personal goals for CHER to let Adventists
throughout Canada know about this wonderful child sponsorship ministry.
In May 2005, myself and our board president, Bancroft Lopez, met with the president of the Seventh-day Adventist Church
in Canada (S.D.A.C.C.), Pastor Dan Jackson
to discuss CHER. We talked about CHER’s
policies, mission, history, and future goals
and we asked for CHER to be considered an
official Independent Supporting Ministry
of the S.D.A.C.C. Pastor Jackson suggested that we make a presentation to the
board of directors in September 2006,
which we were more than happy to do. At
the presentation, we met representatives
from all over Canada who learned about
CHER and with some suggestions were
happy to grant our request.
CHER is now pleased to announce that we
are an Independent Supporting Ministry of
the S.D.A.C.C. What this means is that the
S.D.A.C.C. has studied our practices and
policies and found them to be in line with the
Adventist Church and are giving CHER a
“goldenseal of approval”. CHER remains an
independent Canadian charity, but will be reviewed by the S.D.A.C.C .on an annual basis.
The S.D.A.C.C. will not be providing any funding to CHER nor will it control CHER’s practices in any way.
You may be wondering how this benefits
CHER and the answer is CREDIBILITY and
TRUST. Unfortunately in this day and age of
scams etc., there can be a concern about the
legitimacy of a charitable organization and
how donations are being used. As an approved
Independent Supporting Ministry, there can
be an enhanced level of comfort and trust,
knowing that we have voluntarily requested
this association with the S.D.A.C.C.
Our journey towards raising the awareness
of CHER is not over, in fact, it has just
started. We still need your support, your
voice and your prayers. Look for an article in
the Messenger in the next couple of months
and share it with your friends and family.
There are
so many
children
who have
been
helped by
loving people like you
and there
are so many more who are still in need. Let’s
continue to work together to help God’s children.

A LETTER FROM SPICER
Here’s a letter I received from Mrs. Vimal Paul, our
contact at Spicer Marathi, regarding life at
Spicer….
by other subjects, lunch and more subjects. The college cafeteria provides the lunch. At 3 p.m. school is
complete and the older students do the janitorial work.
”The Spicer CHER Marathi school is located in Pune
City, about 7 kms. away from the main city. There
is no factory or any industry nearby. It used to be
a rural area and for the past two years, they have
relocated a garbage dump nearby the campus.
Those who come to our school are from the slum
and hutment areas. Their parents do manual labour
and often the mothers are housemaids. Their
houses are temporary shelters due to low economic
status. Most of the students walk as much as 3kms.
to get to school. The students start from age 3 ½
up to 12 years old. Once they reach Grade 8, they
transfer to the Spicer High School. We consider
Spicer CHER Marathi school as the first steps towards an individual’s foundation for a better education and for becoming a better Christian.
The students like this school, especially because it is
away from the city and the slums. The students take
part in Sabbath School and Church Activities. Each
quarter, they
present a program in the
church. This
school has been
of much help to
the community
around for the
past few decades.
