PANTHERS NEW RICHLAND • HARTLAND • ELLENDALE • GENEVA PANTHER ATHLETICS SPRING SPORTS PREVIEW NRHEG SPRING 2011 THURSDAY, APRIL 7, 2011 Tracksters seek depth to challenge 2 Thursday, April 7, 2011 By DALE KUGATH Contributing Writer NEW RICHLAND – The New Richland-HartlandEllendale-Geneva track and field teams have plenty of experienced players to build the 2011 squads around. Whether they have enough of them to challenge the top teams remains to be seen. Duey Ferber starts his 21st season in charge of the Panther track programs. He has guided his teams to nine conference titles, seven subsection championships, two section true team titles, three state true team entrants (3rd, 5th, 7th) and a section runnerup. Ferber will be assisted by Chuck Crabtree, Jay Crabtree and Corrine Schuller. Boys The NRHEG boys failed to win a meet in 12 starts a year ago. The Panthers compiled a 24-44 overall record, finished third in the Gopher Conference and took fourth place in Sub-Section 5AA. NRHEG lost five letter winners from that team, including state participants Kevin Klocek and David Lindell. Klocek was NRHEG’s top sprinter, placing third in the state in both the 100 and 200meter dashes. Lindell threw the shot put and discuss, and ran a leg on the 4 x 100 relay. He was a two-year state participant in the discus. NRHEG also graduated dis- tance runners Josh Schroeder and Andy Kampen, along with sprinter Ryan Stenzel. Ferber has eight seniors and a junior returning from last season’s squad. The seniors include Travis Ripka (throws), Tony Wacholz (throws), Matt Young (sprints), Evan Ferber (jumps & distance), Brian Billing (middle distance), Tyler Crabtree (throws & middle distance), Kyle Bayerkohler (distance) and Nate Lutgens (throws). The lone junior returnee is sprinter Geoff Ramaker. Ferber expects senior Hunter Eustice (sprints) and junior Jade Walz (middle distance, sprints) to contribute immediately. “Our strength will be in the weights,” said Ferber. “We have some decent jumpers and sprinters, so our relays could be competitive as well.” The remaining spots will be filled from juniors Tyler Holz, Franklin Klecker, Parker Peterson, Ryan Schlaak and Jacob Tonkin; sophomores Hans Frank, Nick Hanson, Nathan Wallin and Matt Webster and freshmen Ross Chester, Raece Johnson, Nathan Krohn, T.J. Schiltz and Hunter Schwartz. Also working out are eighth-graders Kyle Holz, Kevin Kalis and Keith Maxon; and seventh-graders John Cole, Sean Darcy, Nate Krause, Zach Mely, Cordell Peterson, Palmer Peterson, Star Eagle SPRING SPORTS PREVIEW PANTHER TRACK — The NRHEG boys’ track team will have the following letterwinners returning. Season outlook: (Boys) Will not be able to challenge for conference and sub-section titles due to lack of numbers but will work hard to crack top three. (Girls) The Panthers will be hard pressed to repeat as conference champs, but are looking to push USC for top honors in both the conference and sub-section meets. Bryant Reese, Tyler Schlaak, Kyle Schultz and Karter Sletten. “We have tremendous enthusiasm this season,” said Ferber. “We have a bunch of returning lettermen as well as a handful of new guys. I’m looking for a fun season.” Ferber expects his field events to be NRHEG’s strength this spring. “Our strength will be in the weights,” said Ferber. “We also have some decent jumpers and sprinters, so our relays could be competitive. Ferber expects United South Central to be the team to be in both the conference and subsection meets. “Team wise, we know we can’t compete for the top of the conference and sub-section,” said Ferber. Track continued on 3 Star Eagle SPRING SPORTS PREVIEW Track from Page 2 “We do have some good guys competing and hope to finish in the top half of both meets.” Girls The NRHEG girls return most of its players from last year’s outstanding team. The Panthers won three times in 12 meets and compiled a 55-15 overall mark. N RHEG won the Gopher Conference championship and placed second in the sub-section. The only losses from last year are sprinter Jenny Seath and distance runner Alex Hale. Top scorer Alyssa Kerkhoff will also be missing after transferring to St. Peter for her senior season. Ferber has 11 returning letter winners and a strong seventh-grade class to mold the 2011 squad around. The senior returnees are Alearah Neumann (sprints, jumps), Kaylee Maxon (throws), Jill Kalis (throws) and Amber S c h m i t (throws). Back for their junior seasons are Anna Schlaak (hurdles, Ferber sprints), Danielle Krueger (distances), Emily Habeck (relays, sprints) and Samantha Hogstad (relays, sprints). Returning from the sophomore class are Katie Cole (hurdles), Abby Crabtree (distances), Raelin Schue (sprints), Mikayla Lindell (throws) and Jennika Jongbloedt (middle distances). Freshman Carlie Wagner, who will compete in sprints jumps and relays, is the final returnee. “We should be strong in the sprints, distance events and throws,” said Ferber. “Depth will be a question for us in some of our events.” Ferber will fill out his lineup with help from sophomores Paige Bolduan, Ashley Garretson, Destinee Meyer, Crystal Olson, Lindsey Thursday, April 7, 2011 3 TRACK AND FIELD — Returning letterwinners for the Panther 2011 girls’ track and field team include, front from left: Katie Cole, Emily Habeck, Jamie Ulrich and Danielle Krueger. Ferber expects USC to be the team to beat in both the conference and sub-section meets. Track continued on 8 NRHEG nine expecting turnaround season 4 Thursday, April 7, 2011 By DALE KUGATH Contributing Writer NEW RICHLAND – In 33 years at the helm of the New Richland-Hartland-EllendaleGeneva baseball program, coach Jeff Reese has not had to endure many losing seasons. 2010 was one of those rare years, and Reese and the Panthers are committed to keep it from happening again. Reese, a member of the Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame, is starting his 33rd season as the headman of the Panther baseball program. His clubs have an overall record of 428-231. Assisting Reese will be Al Shultz, Pat Churchill, Shawn Larson and Seth Tukua. NRHEG is coming off one of the worst seasons in Reese’s tenure in 2010. The Panthers tied for last place in the Gopher Conference (2-9) and managed just five wins in 22 games. “After a very disappointing season, we need to vastly improve all areas of our game, including my coaching,” said Reese. “We will work harder on the basic fundamentals as we had too many errors, poor pitching performances and terrible hitting, which included too many strikeouts.” NRHEG graduated five players from last year’s team. Toughest to replace will be pitcher/shortstop Brett Hagen. He was 2-3 with a 3.84 earned run average on the mound and batted .350 for the season. Also gone are C/3B Matt Tomsche (.270), right fielder Trevor Arnold (.226), third baseman Gene Lynne and first baseman Taylor Spooner. Reese has two seniors and 10 juniors who saw varsity action last spring returning in 2011. The seniors are Chad Schlaak and Cody Kraay. Schlaak held down the centerfield spot and was a captain, playing in all 22 games. He hit .317 for the year, stole 20 bases and Reese had a fielding average of .935. Kraay appeared in 14 games as a pitcher or first baseman. He had a 0-1 and 7.00 ERA in four games on the mound, while batting .353. Three juniors had pitching experience last season: Mitch Akemann, Sam Lundberg and David Lassahn. Akemann pitched in 10 games, finishing with a 1-8 record and 7.28 ERA. He played in 20 games, seeing action at second base when not pitching. Lundberg pitched in six games, ending up with a 1-3 record and 5.91 ERA. Reese will have to find a spot for Lundberg when not pitching, judging by his .417 batting average as a sophomore. Lassahn appeared in 20 games as a pitcher or outfielder. He was the Panther leadoff hitter and went 1-2 with a 7.59 ERA when pitching. Jake Staloch and Tyler Sorenson also saw lots of varsity time as sophomores. Staloch (C/3B) appeared in every game, batting .305 with 13 stolen bases. Sorenson (SS) played in 16 games with a .226 average and eight stolen bases. The remaining juniors who saw some varsity time are Carter Tollefson (1B), Lucas Meyer (2B/OF), Matt Dahle (C), Erik Sorenson (1B/DH) and Jade Walz (OF). Tollefson’s seven games were the most of these players. Reese is also hoping for contributions from seniors Mike Smith Scott Routh 465-3320 or 465-8148 Reed Demmer 845-2470 ○○○○○○ Star Eagle SPRING SPORTS PREVIEW BASEBALL PANTHERS — Returning letterwinners for Jeff Reese’s squad this year include, front from left: Carter Tollefson, Mitch Akemann, David Lassahn and Chad Schlaak. Key returnees: Chad Schlaak (sr., CF) .317; Mitch Akemann (jr., P/IF) 1-8 on the mound; Jake Staloch (jr., C/3B) .305; David Lassahn (jr., P/OF) last year’s leadoff hitter; Tyler Sorenson (jr., SS) .226; Cody Kraay (sr., P/1B) .353. Season outlook: NRHEG will definitely win more games than it did in a rare losing season last year. Whether the Panthers can challenge for the top of the Gopher Conference will depend on whether or not some young pitchers improved enough from last season to throw strikes and get outs in key situations and and if the hitters can make more contact and avoid the strikeouts when runners are in scoring position. (P), Skylar Guggisberg (OF), Vince Guggisberg (OF); and juniors Jared Reyant (utility) and Jacob Tonkins (OF). “Defense, speed and pitching should be the strengths of this year’s team,” said Reese. “I believe we have the players to lead the way. Our juniors saw enough playing time to know what it takes to compete at the varsity level.” Reese thinks Randolph is the favorite to win the Gopher Conference. The Rockets, Mankato Loyola and USC tied for first place last year. Reese thinks his Panthers are a dark horse in the conference, and feels that Section 2A is wide open this season. NRHEG has a 20 game sched- ule in place, 12 of them at home. That included the annual Panther Tourney with Faribault BA, Glenville-Emmons and Nicollet joining the Panthers April 16. NRHEG plays three of its first four games at home, starting with Blue Earth April 5. Both teams had winning records a year ago and have solid nucleus’s to build around in 2011. Brad Root will start his first season as the Panther head coach. He has been in the NRHEG school system for 22 years. Justin Timm and Tim Stoesz will serve as assistant coaches. Boys The NRHEG boys enjoyed an excellent season in 2010. The Panthers won 10 of 13 starts and compiled an overall mark of 247. NRHEG won the Gopher Conference Tournament, placed fifth in the sub-section and took third at the Blooming Prairie Invite. Graduating from last season’s team were Seth Hansen, Dalen Ferber and Dillon Hanson. Root has four senior letter winners from a year ago to build around. They include Aaron Patraw, Jon Walstrom, Matt Nafe and Anthony Svoboda. “These four spots are pretty well set. They all have good experience from last year,” said Root. “We need to move from being practice players to tournament players.” Root will need a couple of his non-letter winners to emerge if the Panther are to contend. Other candidates include senior Brett Fisher and Cody Root; juniors Sam Grothem, Spencer Hanna, Pete Blowers, Levi Arnold, Jared Reyant and Kyle Wallerich. Sophomores competing for a spot are Kirby Butler, Brandon Herman, Colton Ryg, Zach Eden, Maverick Waltz, Brendon Arnold, Kyle Schlaak, Matt Davis and Gage Flatness. The freshmen prospects are Kellen Ferber and Doug Rudau. “Our numbers are good. Star Eagle photo by Jody Wynnemer hope someone emerges to help us recapture the conference championship,” said Root. “We have good golf skills, but need to work on the mental aspect, consistency and course management.” Root looks for USC and Blooming Prairie to challenge the Panthers for the conference title. He feels Waseca is the sub-section favorite. “We would like to advance our team to the section meet,” said Root. “And we want to get a couple of all-conference golfers.” NRHEG has 11 duals and a pair of tournaments on its schedule. The Panthers have six home meets scheduled at Riverview Golf Course, including its season opener against Faribault BA April 7. The Gopher Conference Tourney will be held at Oakview in Freeborn, the sub-section is at Waseca and the section meet at Jordan. Girls The NRHEG girls won eight of 12 starts last season, compiling an overall record of 13-10. The Golf continued on 7 Panther softball team looks to utilize speed 6 Thursday, April 7, 2011 By DALE KUGATH Contributing Writer NEW RICHLAND – The New Richland-Hartland-EllendaleGeneva softball team will have to avoid, illness, injuries and inconsistencies on the diamond this spring. Coach Wendy Schultz has just 11 varsity players so will not have the opportunity to make many changes. However, Schultz is hoping to use speed, aggressiveness and an experience pitcher to propel the Panthers to the upper half of the Gopher Conference in 2011. Schultz has enjoyed success as the NRHEG head coach. In 13 seasons at the helm, she has guided the Panthers to five Gopher Conference championships and an overall record of 149-100. She will be assisted by Jamie Radtke. Last year was not one of those successful seasons for Schultz and the Panthers. NRHEG finished seventh in the conference with a 5-7 record, lost its first game in tournament play and finished 7-13 overall. NRHEG batted .279 as a team in 2010, scoring just under five runs per game. Opponents hit .210 last season, but averaged over seven runs per game. NRHEG graduated four players from last year’s squad, all of them starters. Alyssa Hagen was an all-conference third baseman, who led the Panthers in average (.421), hits (24), home runs (2) and RBI 24). Kate Quam earned honorablemention all-conference honors as a first baseman. She batted. .317 for the season. Hagen and Quam shared MVP honors last season. Second baseman Jady Beenken was also honorable mention allconference. The Panther Gold Glove winner hit .310 for the season. NRHEG outfielder Mariah Robran (.111) also graduated last year. N R H E G Schultz returns five letter winners to build around, all of them starters last season. Back for their senior seasons are Kristina Cole, Kacie Phillips and Shelby Mogenson. Cole, an outfielder, won Most Improved last season. She batted .281 and drove in four runs in 2010. Phillips held down the shortstop position a year ago. She batted .284, knocked in eight runs and stole seven bases. Mogenson has to improve behind the plate for the Panthers to enjoy a better year. She had 63 passed balls and threw out only five of 69 runners stealing in 2010. Mogenson hit .188 with three RBI last year. Sophomore outfielder Tara Simon returns after a solid freshman season. She batted .343 with six doubles and 15 RBI. All-conference freshman pitcher Jade Schultz returns after pitching every inning as an eighth-grader. She had a 3.71 earned run average in 134 innings. Schultz allowed 110 hits, issued 143 walks and struck out 171 batters. Schultz is also a threat with the bat. She batted .319, scored 18 runs and stole 14 bases last year. Of the remaining six players, none of them saw any varsity action. They include Tori Raimann (jr. infielder), Harlee Vokoun (jr. infielder), Mandy Deml (jr. outfielder), Ashley Star Eagle SPRING SPORTS PREVIEW FASTPITCH ANYONE? — Returning letterwinners for the Panther softball team are, from left: Tara Simon, Kristina Cole, Shelby Mogenson, Kacie Phillips and Jade Schultz. Season outlook: A year of experience on the mound should make Schultz a much tougher pitcher for Gopher teams to face. Hitting is a question mark for the Panthers, so small ball and aggressive base running will be a must. With just 11 players, NRHEG must avoid injuries to finish in the top half of the conference. Schutrop (jr. infielder/outfielder), sophomore Steph Root and freshman Morgan Staloch. “Our strengths should be our quickness, work ethic and team unity,” said Schultz. “Problems will be our inexperience and youth and having a number of girls playing in new positions.” Schultz looks for Blooming Prairie and United South Central, the second and third place teams last season, as the Gopher Conference favorites. St. Peter, Maple River and Waseca are her top three picks in Section 2AA. “We want to improve from last year and try to finish in the top half of the conference,” said Schultz. “We need to play fundamentally sound softball.” Schultz is hoping her team can score more runs this season to take some pressure off of the pitching and defense. “Small ball will be a must. We will have to be able to incorporate bunting with our hitting,” said Schultz. “We want to be aggressive offensively and defensively. NRHEG stole 61 bases in 67 attempts in 2010. The Panthers will also need to put the ball in play more often, cutting down on strikeouts. Hagen was the only regular to not reach double digits in strikeouts last year. “We have some quick gals,” said Schultz. “We hope to utilize that on the base paths.” Schultz has a 20-game schedule for the Panthers, 12 of them at home. Maple River and Byron are the only non-conference foe that will visit Legion Field this spring. Star Eagle SPRING SPORTS PREVIEW Golf from Page 5 Panthers were second in the Gopher Conference, fourth in the sub-section and won the Triton Invite. The team returns intact this season, with the exception of Emily Davis who graduated. The Panthers have seven returning letter winners from a year ago. The senior returnees are Hannah Moe, Abby Holland and Betsy Johannsen. Juniors back from last year’s team are Lexi Wayne, Michaela Hansen, Hailey Johnson and Jill Theuer. “With these experienced players returning, our goal is to finish first in the conference and first in the sub-section,” said Root. “We expect the girls to be aggressive with their shots and be big risk takers.” Other candidates for playing time will be Maddy Reed, Maddy Schwierjohann, Brina Bergland, Brenna Hagen, Liz Eder, Jayden Nelson-Spies, Ashley Conley and Lizzy Stohl. “The girls need to be mentally tough and focused this season,” said Root. “We are counting on continued improvement from all the girls.” “We want to be prepared for whatever weather conditions exist, as well as dealing with situations we face on the course,” said Root. “We want the girls to be knowledgeable and welcome wherever they travel to play.” The Panther girls play 10 duals and a tournament before end of the year action.
