No one in their right mind would think of traveling through this dangerous highway alone. So why did the religious leaders refuse to give any help when they saw a half-dead victim lying by the roadside? Didn't they recognize that this victim was their neighbor? And why did a Samaritan treat this victim with special care at his own expense, as he would care for his own family? Who was the real neighbor who showed fraternal compassion and mercy? Jesus makes the Samaritan, the merciful one, an example for the Jews. Why didn't the priest and Levite stop to help? The priest probably didn't want to risk the possibility of ritual impurity. The Levite approached the victim, but stopped short of actually helping him. Perhaps he feared that bandits were using a trap to ambush him. Probably Jesus smiled when he heard The Levite put personal safety ahead of this man challenge him to explain his saving his neighbor. duty towards their neighbor. For the Jewish believer the law of love was Firstly, each one of us must be simple: "treat your neighbor as you willing to help even if the others bring would treat yourself." The real issue for trouble on themselves through their own this believer was the correct definition of fault or negligence. Second, our love and who is "my neighbor". He understood "neighbor" as one's fellow Jew who belonged to the same covenant which God made with the people of Israel. Jesus agreed with this sincere expert but, at the same time, he challenged him to see that God's view of neighbor went far beyond his narrow definition. y brothers and sisters, we believe that God is loving and compassionate, then why is it that there is so much suffering in the world? Many people refuse to believe in God because of this apparently imponderable problem. If God is love, then evil and suffering must be eliminated in all its forms. What is Jesus’s answer to this problem? Jesus's parable about a highway robbery gives us a helpful hint. Jesus told this story in response to a devout Jew who wanted to understand how to apply God's great commandment of love to his everyday life circumstances. In not so many words this religious Jew said: "I want to love God as best as I can and I want to love my neighbor as well. But how do I know that I am fulfilling my calling to love my neighbor as myself?" The road from Jerusalem to Jericho went through a narrow winding valley surrounded by rocky cliffs. concern for helping others in need must be practical. Good intentions and showing them pity are not enough. And lastly, our love for others must be as wide and as inclusive as God's love. God rejects no one from his care. God's love is unconditional. So we must be ready to do good to others, just as God is good to each one of us. Jesus taught God's way of love; Jesus showed how far God was willing to go to share in our suffering and to restore us to fullness of life and happiness. Jesus overcame sin, through his victory on the cross. His death brought us freedom from slavery to sin and the promise of everlasting life with God. He shared in our suffering to bring us to the source of true healing and freedom from sin. Jesus really identified with our problems, and he took the burden of our sin upon himself. His suffering is redemptive because it brings us healing and restoration and the fullness of eternal life. God offers us true freedom from every oppression, sin and suffering. And that way is through the cross of Jesus Christ. Brothers and sisters, are we ready to embrace the cross of Christ, suffer for his sake, and to lay down our life out of love for our neighbor? Fr. Jose Gerardo Alberto, M.Sp.S 4 | The SETON Sunday News | Fifteenth Sunday, 07/10/16 JUBILEE OF MERCY MERCIFUL LIKE THE FATHER Mercy and Love… towards us, do not cease to be an object of God’s love and his effort to win their love in return. Hyacinth Woroniecki, OP our enemies who, though they have hostile dispositions Year of Mercy Companion From Elizabeth Ann Seton’s Writings St Elizabeth Ann Seton directed the sisters in her care to ask God to give them universal charity and to reflect about their own heart in comparison with the benevolence of Jesus Christ with this prayer: “Give me O my God this patient and unalterable charity this Beneficent Charity which refuses nothing this universal charity which excepts nothing. O Lord however patient my Charity may be towards my Brethren it can never be compared with that which thou has shewn me, never can I have so much to bear from them as thou hast still to bear from me. . . . but my shame is redoubled when I consider my coldness and negligence in the exercise of that Charity which thou art ready to accept as done to thyself, when thou hast even presented thyself as the motive, promised to account it and make it meritorious in thy Sight Ah my God if indeed I love thee how can I do otherwise than love those thou hast substituted for thyself are they not my Brethren do I not love Thee in loving them what I do to them is it not done to thee and surely this consideration is enough to soften the most insensible heart.” Isn’t Our Lord Jesus the best example of the Good Samaritan, taking care of everyone, and ransoming us out of His own riches? Thank you and EVERYONE……. Blessings to Many thanks go to the parish ministry heads and individuals that helped make our Farewell and Welcome receptions possible. We had over 120 parishioner volunteers help prepare and assist over the entire six farewell receptions. Without your support, it would have been impossible to do. We especially thank the transition team for their leadership and planning over several weeks. A special thanks goes to the East Indian Community, the Funeral Committee, Simbang Gabi, Luz y Vida Spanish Prayer Group, Knights of Columbus, Serra Club and Life Teen for their leadership at individual mass receptions and preparation. Abundance of thanks goes to the many parishioners who assisted with our farewell Mass and to those that responded so faithfully to the requests for the spiritual bouquets and by sharing their thoughts for the memory books. Your spiritual messages mean so much to the departing Missionaries of the Holy Spirit. They truly read each page of their memory books. Because of you, we continue to strive to be an AMAZING parish. Fifteenth Sunday, 07/10/16 | The SETON Sunday News | 5 ALivingCopyofJesus —————Fr.MarioRodriguez,MSpS————— Fr. Felix was very much in love with his priesthood. He lived in constant ecstasy over the image of Christ Priest and Victim, especially in the context of the Letter to the Hebrews, in his deep study of Scripture. Let's look at Hebrews 5:1-10: “Every high priest is taken from among men and made their representative before God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He is able to deal patiently with the ignorant and erring, for he himself is beset by weakness and so, for this reason, must make sin offerings for himself as well as for the people. No one takes this honor upon himself but only when called by God, just as Aaron was. In the same way, it was not Christ who glorified himself in becoming high priest, but rather the one who said to him: “You are my son; this day I have begotten you”; just as he says in another place: “You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.” In the days when he was in the flesh, he offered prayers and supplications with loud cries and tears to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence. Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered; and when he was made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, declared by God high priest according to the order of Melchizedek.” Christ is the priest offering himself for our Salvation. And we have been called to be the priestly people who unite ourselves to him for the salvation of all. We are called to be priests by virtue of our baptism; even with our weaknesses. Fr. Felix wrote the following for the men who were about to be ordained to the ministerial priesthood, but I think it could apply to every one of us: men and women who take part on the priesthood of Christ: " trive to be a living copy of Jesus, obedient, meek, humble, zealous, loving of the hidden love in Nazareth. Like Jesus, S now on the mount, now on the sea, now in the town, now in the desert, now among the crowd of followers, now in the midst of the sick, now with the children, now with the poor and the sick, now at Tabor or Calvary, so we can rise from there with him to eternal glory. " We are called to be living copies of Jesus Christ in every environment where we move. We must be living witnesses of God’s salvific action. We must be witnesses of joy and hope for this world in crisis. We need to start by imitating the qualities of Jesus that Fr. Felix highlights in this text. You need to be witness to and a copy of Christ. Allow the action of the Holy Spirit and the loving presence of the Merciful Father to transform you BE A LIVING COPY OF CHRIST IN THE WORLD, and may Our Blessed Mother help you. When we do this, our heart fills with joy,” he departed from his script to say, just like the hearts of Jesus’ disciples. Francis prayed that, through Mary’s intercession, the Church may never lack generous hearts which bring the Heavenly Father’s love and tenderness to the world. “What is the spirit with which the disciple of Jesus will carry out this “In the Holy Year of Mercy, I am happy to recall that on Wednesday mission? What shall I do, Lord? (Acts 22:10) Vocation is not something you invent: it is a treasure you find. It is not the plan you prepare for your life, but the project that the Trinity-God provides for you and invites you to carry out. It is not primarily a decision you make, rather a gift that you receive, a call to which you answer. In order to discover what God wants from you, you need to pray. This is what was done by Samuel (1S 3:10), Ezekiel (Ez 2:1 and 3:11), Jesus of Nazareth (Lk 3:21), Mary of Magdala (Jn 20:17), Saul from Tarsus (Acts 9:11), and many others. In prayer you can find Jesus Christ and experience His love; the Holy Spirit will sharpen your ear so that you may listen, and He will give you the strength and courage to respond. When speaking with Jesus you can hear His voice calling to you, “Come, follow me.” (Mk 10:21); or you can hear Him telling you, “Return home and tell about what God has done for you.” (Lk 8:39) It is not enough for you to remember God only occasionally and ask Him to enlighten you; it is necessary that you dedicate time to formal prayer. You may pray daily (at least fifteen minutes), go on a day of prayer and silence, or spend a few days on retreat. Prayer, besides being the first step of the process of searching, is an exercise that will have to accompany you throughout your vocational discernment. By taking this step, you may say, “I love Jesus Christ,” or, “I want to find God’s will for me,” or, “I want to carry out His project”. CHILDREN OFTEN TALK about what they want to be “when they grow up”: doctors, lawyers, athletes, nurses, movie stars, teachers, carpenters. They may talk about these roles, but do they ever talk about being a priest, sister or brother? You are the hand of God — you can encourage your children to consider Church ministry. Serra for priestly and religious vocations “Do I Have a Vocation?”, Fernando Torre, MSpS Use this prayer to begin your conversation with God each day: Lord, my God and my loving Father, you have made me to know you, to love you, to serve you, and thereby to find and to fulfill my deepest longings. I know that you are in all things, and that every path can lead me to you. But of them all, there is one especially by which you want me to come to you. Since I will do what you want of me, I pray you, send your Holy Spirit to me: into my mind, to show me what you want of me; into my heart, to give me the determination to do it, and to do it with all my love, with all my mind, and with all of my strength right to the end. Jesus, I trust in you. Amen This week please pray for Brother Rene Alvarez, Novice with the Missionaries of the Holy Spirit. And that makes you restless, because a young person who is not restless is an old person. So many times we feel restless, like there is something new ahead of us, but we just don’t know what it is yet. 2. “What is your restlessness? Do you know what it is or do you not know?
