Sigma Chi Lambda Phase 2 Report
Sigma Chi Lambda DePaul University Phase 2 Report Lambda
Sigma Chi
DePaul University
To the Esteemed Members of the Sigma Chi New Chapter Development Committee, I am writing to you on behalf of the 49 gentlemen in the Sigma Chi Lambda Colony. It is with great pride that we, the brothers of Sigma Chi Lambda, submit to you this Phase II report and we sincerely hope that this document adequately reflects our accomplishments as a Colony. We have worked really hard over these past few months. We have strengthened all of our relationships and are quickly making our way to being the top fraternity on campus in every way possible. We continue to grow and with that branch out more in the university. We compete in more Intermural leagues and attend more philanthropy events. Greek life at DePaul University has always and will continue to flourish with excellence inside the classroom and in the community. Our purpose is to emphasize, through our own actions, the values of Sigma Chi. We have been able to do this by recruiting some excellent men that truly embody what it means to be a Sigma Chi. One thing that we would like to highlight is our academics. Every quarter since Sigma Chi has been on campus we have been the fraternity with the highest GPA. We have a bunch of great student and great leaders. We are eager to begin our first transition period for officers and finish up our colonization process. Within the upcoming year, Sigma Chi Lambda will continue to actively exhibit to the International Fraternity that we are most deserving of a Sigma Chi Chapter. We hope that the pages in this document will demonstrate that we are able to do so and that DePaul University and the men of the Sigma Chi Lambda colony have the ability of bringing a Sigma Chi chapter to our institution. Scholarship Program In Sigma Chi one of the most important areas is academics. We pride ourselves in having academics at the forefront of our fraternity. We encourage our members to excel in the classroom, and in doing so we have established strict yet reasonable expectations. “A Student of Fair Ability” is a standard that we have taken to heart during this process of creating our foundation. Each of our members are exceptionally high caliber students that we rightfully have great expectations for. Our focus moving forward is to attain a respectable GPA north of 3.2 and to hopefully attain the highest GPA of all Greek life on campus, essentially creating a studious reputation. To do this we are making efforts to implement a more incentive-‐based system, which we believe will help push our members to reach their full potential in the classroom. The Scholarship Committee is currently working with Sigma Chi alumnus to potentially create a quarterly scholarship for top grade earners. Such systems would prevent members from simply attempting to stay off probation. It gives added value to striving towards excellence. Our members have already set a strong example with their scholastic achievements, but there is always room for growth. Pledges: 1. Disregarding GPA, all pledges are required to log a minimum of 4 study hours per week throughout their entire quarter of Pledgeship. These hours are to be recorded in a sign-‐
in book by the end of each week. Active Brothers: 1. Any active brother with a GPA, from the previous quarter, that falls between a 2.75 and a 3.0 is required to attend study hours and adhere to social probation. A requirement of at least 6 logged study hours per week shall be placed on the brother in order to be relieved from social probation. This requirement remains in effect throughout the entire quarter. 2. Any active brother with a GPA, from the previous quarter, that is below a 2.75 is required to attend study hours and adhere to social probation. A requirement of at least 10 logged study hours per week must be met. On the third and sixth week of the quarter, a progress report must be presented to the Scholarship Chair. In addition, they are required to report to the Scholarship Chair once every two weeks. Sigma Chi Lambda – DePaul University

3. Grades must all be emailed or given to the scholarship chair hard copy. If they are emailed, they must be screenshots of the transcripts. This is to eliminate the guesswork in this position. 4. The head officers will sit down and book a day of the week that we can reserve a room in the library for, all in advance. If we do this together we can maximize the number of hours that we can hold. This will be done twice a week to give the brothers an opportunity to use the study rooms at DePaul. Library times will be voted upon in chapter meetings so that the best time will be available. 5. For those in academic distress, must tell the scholarship char that they are meeting with those professors to open a dialogue about what they can do to improve. Or they must see a tutor at DePaul, so they can also improve. If the student is failing due to health reasons whether it’s a chronic sickness or not, or due to addiction and depression must talk to the professor if sick. If its chronic they should talk to not only the dean of students, but also the professor. Finally if its depression, addiction, or other psychological disorders I encourage the student to not only talk to the brothers of Sigma Chi about it because we can support said student, but also I encourage the student to seek the school counselor. 6. The Scholarship Chair will check weekly hours, biweekly in the Library. This will allow me to be up to date more efficiently. The chair will log each of the hours on an excel spreadsheet. If the members complete their weekly hours they may attend one event, or mixer. The whole point of being on probation is to ensure the students are studying. We are not in a position to punish. If all hours are completed and the students feel that they can attend event, they should be able to. Social Probation: 1. Social probation requires that any member of the Lambda Colony facing social probation shall not be allowed to partake in any social events, excluding brotherhood events. Scholastic Rewards: 1. Rewards are given to the following: • The highest quarterly GPA from any Junior/Senior brother in the colony. • The highest quarterly GPA from any Freshman/Sophomore brother in the colony. • The most improved grade by any active brother within the colony. Probation: There are two degrees of probation. The first as stated earlier is having a GPA below 3.0 but above 2.75. This quarter we have three brothers on probation: Sam Cortez, Kevin Rodriguez, and Ryan Lloyd. To serve their probation they are currently studying 6 hours per week in the library in order to improve their GPA. The Second Degree of Probation is a brother having a GPA below a 2.75. This quarter we have two brothers on this level of probation: Patrick Gorecki and Willie Love. Their punishment for being on this level of probation is to study at least 10 hours per week in the library. In addition to this they are to meet with the scholarship chair a number of times, so that he can track the brother’s progress. This is to ensure that the brothers do not stay on probation and become a drain on our cumulative quarterly GPA, which was 3.23 last quarter. The system currently in place is an important step in the right direction. Our members have exemplified a model work ethic and will continually be making strides to improve. Our academic achievements play a critical role in establishing our reputation in the DePaul community, so we will continue to make every effort to instill in our members studious values. As it stands, we are an intelligent group of men that is actively working towards our goal of excellence in the classroom. Sigma Chi Lambda – DePaul University

Bid Acceptance Rate: 34/35 (97%) Pledge Retention Rate: 13/14 (93%) BBQ and Sports Night: September 16th Our first event was at Jonquil Park where we brought homemade barbeque food for the brothers to share with the actives. A rotation system was in place so each brother could take the time to adequately meet each rushee. After that, we played a pick up game of football and bags with the rushees. Meet and Greet: September 17 The event took place in one of classrooms on campus. Our consul, Kevin Rodriguez, and both recruitment chairs helped deliver a PowerPoint presentation on the history and benefits of being a part of Sigma Chi. A chat session took place after the presentation in order to meet new rushees as well as answer any other questions they may have had. Whirleyball: September 18 This event seemed to be the most enjoyable by both the rushees and the brothers. We played multiple games of Whirleyball as well as enjoyed pizza provided by the event holder. A speech was given at the end by multiple brothers emphasizing on their experience about being in Sigma Chi. Buffalo Wild Wings: September 22 This recruitment event started with Wings and Football. We walked over the nearest Buffalo Wild Wings to watch the Chicago Bears game. We made sure that the brothers switched their seats during the event in order to get to know each rushee individually. Chili Night: September 23 This event took place at a brother’s house where we shared deeper conversation over homemade chili. After eating the chili, we broke the pledges and actives into small groups and split them up into separate rooms. The ratio was approximately 5-‐6 pledges to 2-‐3 active brothers. During the conversations we asked questions pertaining to the Jordan Standard and Sigma Chi Lambda – DePaul University

deeper questions to get to know the pledges on a more personal level. After several minutes, a buzzer would go off and the pledge groups would switch rooms and the process would repeat. Alumni Night: September 24 Our last event was held at a nearby restaurant, Derby. We found this event to be highly critical during our recruitment period because it does a great job at showing the lifelong commitment that one can make while in Sigma Chi. It also allows alumni members to meet each rushee and stress the benefits of joining Sigma Chi. Sigma Chi Lambda – DePaul University

We, as a Fraternity, by our association and our example, are committed to that purpose for your benefit.” “Pledging Sigma Chi is a process of learning, inspiration and attainment, by which you must come fully to understand that membership in our fraternity, is dependent upon your willingness to search within yourself for those values which form the basis of our brotherhood, and to adopt them as your lifelong binding obligation. We shall assist you in every positive and constructive way. Ultimately, however, your eligibility for initiation in Sigma Chi will be determined by the strength of your own character and of your commitment to the ideals of our white cross.” Sigma Chi Lambda – DePaul University

“In wearing this pledge pin you will be known to all as one of those who Sigma Chi has favored in its selection of men to perpetuate and exemplify our standards, which are stated in the pledge oath you are now called upon to take. Raise your right hand and repeat after me: I (each pledge brother repeats his name), OF MY OWN FREE WILL AND ACCORD, BEFORE GOD AND THE MEMBERS OF THE SIGMA CHI FRATERNITY HERE ASSEMBLED, HEREBY ACKNOWLEDGE MYSELF AS A PLEDGE OF THE SIGMA CHI LAMBDA COLONY OF SIGMA CHI. experience in pledging will help determine the type of student and alumnus member of Sigma Chi you will be. In like manner, the strength and positive contribution of our colony on this campus and in our community during the coming years will rest with you. “The colony has placed its wholehearted confidence in its Magister, Brother Nick Buffo. He will be your guide and your friend. I will now ask him to assist me in placing the pledge pin of Sigma Chi upon you.” The Consul, Magister (and other officers if desired) place a pledge pin from a pin board on each of the pledges, and then extend to each a regular handshake and a brief word of congratulations, such as, “Our colony takes great pleasure in placing upon you the pledge pin of Sigma Chi and wishes you well. Congratulations.” THANK YOU/closing Big Brother Reveal Ceremony Purpose: The Big Brother Ceremony is instrumental in portraying the importance of the Big Brother Program. This activity will help to stress the strength of the relationship between the Big Brother and Little Brother. A Big Brother is there for his Little Brother for the duration of pledgeship, and this relationship should continue through brotherhood in Sigma Chi. # of Brothers: All Big Brothers/Pledge Fathers and the Magister Materials: A printed copy of the script Preparation: ·∙ Choose an Ideal location. ·∙ Rehearse this ceremony with the Big Brothers. Execution: For this event, have a brother escort the pledges to the activity location. If desired, pledges can be asked to close their eyes, but blindfolds should not be used. When the pledges arrive at the location, the Big Brothers should be out of sight. Pledges should be brought out, one by one. Place the Pledge and Big Brother in front of each other. The Magister begins his speech. When he announces the section on turning to “meet your Big Brother”, the pledge should open their eyes and be revealed their Big Brother standing in front of them. Following the Magister’s Sigma Chi Lambda – DePaul University

speech, the Big Brother should introduce himself to the Little Brother. Take this opportunity to allow the Big and Little Brother to have a conversation for roughly fifteen minutes. This activity should end with a candle pass, with both pledges and brothers participating. Magister’s Speech: “There was a Pledge Brother who was just initiated. He reviewed the footprints he had made throughout his pledgeship. As he looked back, he noticed that over all of the mountains and difficult places he had traveled, there was only one set of footprints. He turned to his Big Brother and said, There is something I do not understand—why is it that down the hills and over the smooth and easy paths you have walked by my side, but on the rough and difficult paths I have walked alone, as I see only one set of footprints? His Big Brother turned to him and said, “It was while your pledgeship was easy that I walked at your side, but when the treading was hard and paths difficult, I knew that was the time you needed me most, so I carried you. This is why you only see one set of footprint.” Pledge Brother, you may open your eyes. Big Brothers, please raise your right hand and repeat after me: I, state full name** promise to work on building Sigma Chi Brotherhood** with my little brother continuously** through pledgeship and during the active and alumni years to come** and I am committed to develop a friendship of love**, inspiration and learning for the betterment of the brotherhood** and the Lambda Colony of Sigma Chi**, I say these words in all sincerity** in the name of Sigma Chi. Big Brothers, you may put your hands down. (The Magister now addresses the Little Brother) Little Brother, raise your right hand and repeat after me: I, state full name** am determined to learn and grow** through my pledgeship and life as a Sigma Chi** I will strive diligently to obtain the knowledge** my Big Brother bestows on me** not only by his words, but through his example as a true Sigma Chi** I say these words in all sincerity** as a Pledge Brother of the Sigma Chi Lambda Colony of Sigma Chi. You may put your hands down. Brothers and Pledge Brothers, the obligations you have committed yourselves to are serious. You have dedicated both time and effort to developing true Sigma Chi Brotherhood. Pledge Brothers, remember that your Big Brother is your friend and guide into our brotherhood. Take advantage of this opportunity to build life long bond.” Sigma Chi Lambda – DePaul University

Big Brother: In Hoc Signo Vinces! Hazing Activity Purpose: The point of this activity is to reflect on Sigma Chi’s Zero-‐Tolerance Policy on Hazing. This will allow pledge brothers to become educated on the severe consequences of Hazing as well as see that Hazing does not need to happen in order to form a true brotherhood bond. # of Brothers: All Pledge Brothers and Magister, (Colony Brothers are encourage to participate as well) Materials: 3 different signs (“Hazing, put on probation”, “Hazing, turn in badge”, “Not Hazing”.) Piece of paper that include 6 different scenarios Execution: The Magister will set up the 3 different signs into different separate corners. He will then read out a scenario and ask the pledge brothers to decide whether if the situation is Hazing or Not Hazing. Pledge Brothers will be asked to move to their designated corner of the room and discuss why they chose their corner. Repeat this step for all 6 scenarios. Scenarios should be developed between the Magister and Assistant Magister. Illumination Purpose: The purpose of “Illumination” is to illustrate the importance of individual contribution within the chapter, and to identify how, within the Spirit of Sigma Chi, different temperaments, talents and convictions bring people of different abilities together for the purposes of pursuing higher ideals. # of Brothers: 14-‐21 Materials: Long Taper Candles Execution: A group of pledges is escorted into a dark room by the speaker (Magister). The Brothers in this room are positioned in several lines, facing the pledge class, each holding a taper candle. A diagram for the recommended layout included below. The speaker stands to the side, and reads the introduction outlined below. Following the introduction, the reader begins reading profiles of each brother in attendance. As he finishes each profile, the brother being discussed lights his candle. This process repeats until every brother’s candle is lit. At this point, the speaker will read the speech included below: Sigma Chi Lambda – DePaul University

Illumination Cont. INTRO: Gentlemen, In order to run an effective chapter, it takes the hard work and dedication of every brother. The Lambda Colony is composed of brothers from all walks of life, with varying capabilities, passions, and skills. This exercise will illustrate how the different temperments, talents and convictions of our membership have contributed to the success of our chapter. SPEECH: Gentlemen, As you can see, the Lambda Colony is composed of men of different temperaments, talents and convictions, all offering unique personal contributions to the pursuit of the higher ideals for which our Fraternity strives. When you were brought into this room, there were no candles lit. This is emblematics of brothers’ failure to contribute their part, and the result is perpetual darkness. When you heard the accomplishments and contributions of each individual brother, a small amount of light penetrated the darkness, but one man can only provide enough illumination to light his own path. You likely observe that as each brother lit his candle, the room grew brighter and brighter. This is symbolic of the strength of the combination of many individual contributions. When each brother lends his hand in aiding the growth and progress of this Fraternity, the result is one of illumination, which is symbolic of knowledge, and the success of the Lambda colony. The Spirit of Sigma Chi states that “genuine friendship can be maintained without surrendering the principle of individuality or sacrificing one’s personal judgment.” Our founders stressed the idea that Sigma Chi was a place where each man can be himself. Furthermore, that freedom to embrace one another’s individuality contributes to the growth and progress of Sigma Chi and of our respective chapters. In your time as a Sigma Chi, it will be vital that contribute your own unique talents to the betterment of the Fraternity. Very soon, you will be faced with the decision. The choice is yours: provide light for your Fraternity, or leave it in darkness. The Pledge Program in the Sigma Chi fraternity is integral to the development of our members, the operation of our colonies and chapters, and the overall success of the organization. Understanding what values and ideals we strive to achieve is the most fundamentally important concept that any Sigma Chi will ever learn during his tenure in the fraternity. At the Lambda colony, we utilize a 4-‐5 week pledge program. Each week is designed to achieve a different Sigma Chi Lambda – DePaul University
36

learning initiative that allows Pledges to reflect on different aspects of the fraternity and understand why they are important. The general breakdown of the week-‐by-‐week is as follows: Week 1 Members gain a conceptual understanding of what a fraternity actually is and how that differs from what they’ve seen in movies or may have thought about before. They’re asked to read certain sections from the normal shield, which describe the history of fraternities and their founding. We then read about what a ritual is, and why it’s important to keep it secret. It’s stressed to the pledges that for their initiation experience to be as sweet as possible, they should refrain from trying search for ritual secrets. Next, we move into what it means to be a Sigma Chi and the expectations that not only the NIC has for all fraternity members, but specifically what we expect. We move through the “Basic Expectations/Obligations of Pledgeship” part of the normal shield then use this as a transition to the Jordan Standard. A quiz on the Jordan Standard is given the following week or the week after (depending on the length of the program). At the end of the educational component, we read about our own founding as a preview for the next week. Finally, nominations for pledge elections are conducted and elections are to be carried out the next week. Furthermore, we utilize our Faculty advisor, Joel Whalen, PhD, who gives a presentation on how to carry yourself around women and the proper ways in which you might interact with someone professionally as a Sigma Chi. Brother/Dr. Whalen specializes in business communication, so the presentation is thorough, entertaining, and perfectly encompasses what we expect pledges to act like when around others. They are introduced to the story of Constantine and the meaning of “In Hoc Signo Vinces”. The symbolism of Constantine’s desire to fight for a belief and an ideal is stressed. The badge, and what it (publicly) means is introduced so Pledges can understand that the badge is not a religious symbol, but a symbol that portrays our values and ideals. The Founders are also introduced during the second meeting. This training period allows the current Magister to let the Assistant Magister view how to teach the values and history of Sigma Chi in an effective and efficient manner. The Magister should sit down with the Assistant Magister before each meeting to explain what the important take away from each lesson should be. The Magister should let the Assistant Magister take control of some of the discussions, to build a sense of how to control a room and reinforce certain learning objective. This should occur with a gradual pace, with the Assistant Magister controlling about 40-‐50% of the discussion at the last meeting. If there is/are no Assistant Magister, then the outgoing Magister should show the incoming Magister this guy and walk him through the curriculum. Sigma Chi Lambda – DePaul University

Philanthropy Service and Philanthropy are two values that place the men of Sigma Chi above others. We pride ourselves in giving back to the community that has so graciously supported us, both in DePaul University and in Chicago. In a short amount of time we have participated in several events that have allowed us to use our talents and time to benefit the lives of those less fortunate. In fact, our chapter places the importance of service and philanthropy as such a top priority that we have voted to make it mandatory every quarter: four hours for philanthropy, and six hours for service. Promentory Point Earth Day Parks and Preserves Clean-‐Up Organized by Friends of the Parks, lead organizer for over 60 parks across Chicagoland, our brothers drove to Promentory Point one Saturday to assist sororities and fraternities from Chicago (including the Sigma Chi chapter from University of Chicago) in clearing the park. Using gloves, grabber sticks, and bin bags, we covered the entire Promontory Point Park picking up cans, bottles, wrappers, plastic bags, and other items discarded irresponsibly. Over the course of roughly 4 hours, we covered roughly 400 acres collectively. St. Thomas of Canterbury Soup Kitchen Several brothers drove to a soup kitchen north of Chicago and volunteered to serve 120-‐170 homeless people. We were split up into three groups to tackle each task efficiently. The first group was tasked with cooking and helping prepare ingredients for the chefs. This included locating the necessary supplies from the pantry, and either preparing them or handing them off to the seniors in the kitchen. We prepared fruit salads and soups in large vats. The second group was tasked with greeting each person, ensuring they all had enough to eat on their plate. Some were walking around with platters of bread rolls while others still helped seat the crowds. Lastly we had a cleanup crew that both wiped down the tables and washed every pot, pan, dish, and utensil used. Bi-‐Annual 2nd Ward Clean and Green Event Sigma Chi Lambda – DePaul University

Once again brothers were split up across several locations including Streeterville, Jones Park, Damen and Lake, Bartelme Park, and Honore Park. Some brothers were even chosen as leaders for each park, in charge of registration, supply distribution, and overall organization. Despite the cold and rainy conditions, we resolved to work four hours cleaning up these locations. Using bags, rakes, and brooms, brothers walked around each location to pick up trash, while others focused on graffiti removal. Towards the end we were all visited by the Alderman Bob Fioretti who commended us on our hard work. Finish MS: Chicago Marathon For one of the biggest marathons nationwide, our chapter was fortunate enough to help the National Multiple Sclerosis Society by raising awareness and helping the athletes. Several brothers worked as spirit volunteers that cheered at the hydration station. Split between two three-‐hour shifts, our chapter wore orange to represent our unity with Finish MS runners. Other duties included set-‐up of the MS tent, making posters, waving pom-‐poms, ringing cowbells, and hanging out goodies (candy, wet sponges) to show our support for each runner, and our collective hope in ending MS. Faculty and Alumni Relations This fall, the Sigma Chi Lambda Colony at DePaul University will have hosted several Alumni Relations events, as well as a Faculty and Staff Appreciation Dinner. These events, in accordance with our Phase II submission and Formal Petition, have allowed us to branch out into the alumni community in the greater Chicago area, and allowed us to connect with alumni chapters, and build our relationships with them as well as that of the faculty and staff at DePaul, the Division of Student Affairs, and our brothers at other area chapters. Friday, September 24th – Alumni Night, Fall Rush Our chapter hosted Alumni Night at Derby Bar and Grill near campus as part of our Fall Recruitment schedule. Potential New Members were given a buffet dinner and had the opportunity to connect with alumni who shared their Sigma Chi experiences and gave insight as to how being a Sigma Chi is a lifelong commitment and the opportunities available for involvement after college. We had close to 15 alumni in attendance, from various chapters, in addition to several DePaul faculty who are Sigma Chi’s, and Peter Schellenbach, our region’s Grand Praetor. All of these individuals had dinner with our brothers and PNM’s, and had the chance to connect with us on a personal level since we had not had much exposure to alumni at the time. Our brothers also attended a monthly luncheon at the Tilted Kilt to connect with Chicago Metro Chapter Alumni. Friday, October 24th – Faculty and Staff Appreciation Dinner On Friday, October 24th, the chapter will host its first Faculty and Staff Appreciation Dinner. Brothers were asked to nominate a professor who has impacted their academic and professional success at DePaul, and invite them to be named a Sigma Chi Greek Scholar. Our nominees were John Vitanovec, Linda Kahn, Justin Staley, and Joel Whalen. We also invited the Vice President of Student Affairs, Gene Zdziarski, who attended our pinning ceremony and remarked that he was impressed by our chapter and was committed to supporting our efforts at DePaul. The dinner will be held at State Restaurant near campus, and will commence at 7:00 PM. Friday, November 14th – Alumni Gathering Event On Friday, November 4th, our chapter will host its first annual Alumni Gathering Event as an opportunity for area alumni to connect with our chapter, our school, and one another. A time has not yet been set; we are either going to host alumni at the double header basketball game on campus, or host an informal dinner and reception at State Restaurant or at Pequod’s Pizza, both close to campus. Details on this event are to come via email closer to the event time. We look forward to connecting with area alumni. Sigma Chi Lambda – DePaul University

Bringing Chapters Together Through Philanthropy
By: Ryan Gillespie, Tribune
Our brothers have spent a
great deal of time getting
to know other Sigma Chi
Chapters in Chicago
through philanthropy
events involving multiple
schools. At one notable
event, many of our brothers joined brothers from
the Omicron Omicron
Chapter at the University
of Chicago and traveled to
the St. Thomas of Canterbury Church soup kitchen
for an afternoon dedicated
to serving Chicago’s homeless population. At another, our brothers traveled
to Hyde Park with Sigma
Chis from Loyola University and University of Chicago to clean the parks. We
have also participated in
philanthropy on our own.
Below, our brothers are
pictured at Ann & Robert H.
Lurie Children’s Hospital,
which we visited in March
after raising the most funding for DePaul’s “Penny
Wars” competition to raise
money for the hospital. Our
colony also recently voted to
mandate 10 philanthropy
and service hours per quarter to ensure that we continuously make an effort to be
involved in the community.

worked to build relationships with other chapters in
Chicago, notably Loyola and
the University of Chicago,
through philanthropy and
brotherhood events, as well
as develop a presence on
DePaul’s campus and get to
know other members of the
Greek Community. Brother
Sam Smith, of the University of Denver generously
volunteered his time and
efforts as Chapter Advisor,
and Brother and DePaul
Professor D. Joel Whalen
signed on as Faculty Advisor. During Winter Quarter, Recruitment Chairmen
Sam Citro and Nick Buffo
conducted the first recruitment managed on their
own, and bid 13 men for
then Beta Class. Ryan
Cummings Served as the
first Magister during new
member education.
Alpha and Beta class worked
together to participate in philanthropy and brotherhood
events as well as continuously
improve and expand the colony. Alpha and Beta class experienced great harmony and
the brothers overwhelmingly
felt like one cohesive group.
In Spring Quarter, the Colony
hosted another recruitment
week bid its Gamma Class of
2 men, and began preparing
for the first annual Derby
Days at DePaul, as well as its
first Spring Formal. The colony also submitted Phase I and
is looking forward to Phase II
and continuing the recruitment process in the fall. Our
brothers have developed a
strong bond as well as a continuously stronger presence
on campus and we look forward to what future brothers
of our colony can bring to
Sigma Chi. IHSV.

First Annual Derby Days a Great Success
During the Week of May
26th, Sigma Chi at DePaul
University held its First
Annual Derby Days. With
the help of our sorority
women on campus, and in
partnership with our donors, alumni, friends, and
family, we worked to raise
money for three separate
charity organizations: the
Bonnie J. Addario Lung
Cancer Foundation, Sarah's Inn, which provides
services for families affected by domestic violence,
and the charity organization of the winning sorority. These causes are particularly important to us as a
colony and as individuals;
for example, several of our
brothers have family members currently affected by
lung cancer. Our events included a dance competition, a
dine-to-donate event at Derby
Bar and Grill, and short skits
performed on Fullerton Avenue Beach commemorating
the history of Derby Days.
Through the generosity of our
donors, and the overwhelming
support from our Greek organizations and friends/family
members, we were able to
reach our $3,000 fundraising goal, and put on a successful week of events. We
congratulate Delta Zeta for
taking first place, based
upon attendance, money
raised, and number of
events won. We remain
grateful for any alumni
brothers who attended one
of our events, or contributed a donation to our cause.

Risk Management Policy The risk management chair and the risk management committee handle two types of hazards: internal and external. Internal hazards are any actions committed by brothers, which puts the safety of brothers, other people, or the reputations of the chapter at risk. The general policy of the risk management is that each internal hazard is different from every other and needs to be handled individually. To this end each time such a hazard is discovered the executive board holds an immediate meeting with first the risk manager to discus the offending action and then with the brother in question to discuss possible retributions. The external hazards (any outside force which may damage the chapter’s reputation, its members, its guests) are far harder to catch before they become dangerous. For this reason the policy regarding them is far more involved and based on common sense, the experiences of the lambda colony and advice from other sources. First on the policy is the list of resources that must be available to the chapter in case of and for prevention of emergency. The apartment where the party is located must contain two fire extinguishers, a first aide kit, a breathalyzer, and two large trashcans at all times. In the case of social events the list becomes more extensive and need specific: a rack for coats that also blocks the stairwells leading to other apartments in the buildings, a large supply of garbage bags to block sound and light from the apartment going to the outside, and several other items that are left out for the sake of brevity. Second in the policy are the job descriptions of brothers during social events. Each brother must follow every description to the letter, as there are jobs specifically tailored for each and every scenario. It is chapter policy to hold accountable any brother who leaves his post and leaves the situation open to risk, real or theoretical. Third and the finally, the policy details the response to emergencies. Here there are detailed instructions for emergency response to any event that has a likely-‐hood of happening. Generally they take a “good Samaritan” approach, where the needs of the individual trump any responsibility the chapter might incur. Sigma Chi Lambda – DePaul University
