VOLUME 23 H E ISSUE 3 LiftMaster Launches MyQ Garage Universal System ILLINOIS - LiftMaster has recently launched the MyQ Garage universal system. The system offers smartphone control of garage doors for all major garage door opener brands. The MyQ Garage universal garage door controller syncs any compatible opener manufactured after 1993 with a homeowner’s smartphone, tablet or computer. This gives the user the ability to open or close the garage door from anywhere and receive real-time alerts if and when the status of that door changes. “Whether it’s through MyQ Garage, the MyQ Control Panel, or a new LiftMaster Garage Door Opener, our dealers can now offer any customer smartphone control,” said Bob Heisner, LiftMaster Vice President of Marketing. “This offers them a very powerful differentiator that will position them as solution providers in a very tech savvy and security-oriented marketplace.” Engineered using LiftMaster’s patented MyQ Technology platform, MyQ Garage is installed without wiring and consists of two devices—the LiftMaster Wi-Fi Hub, which is positioned near the garage door opener, and the door sensor mounted on the garage door itself. To let those nearby know that the garage door is about to close, LiftMaster equipped MARCH 2014 MyQ Garage with Alert-to-Close technology. To prevent injury or entrapment within the garage when the door is remotely activated, this feature provides audible and visual warnings that the door is about to close — flashing lights and beeps for 10 seconds. MyQ Garage has also received an Underwriters Laboratory (UL) Listing. With the new LiftMaster MyQ Garage, customers can control, manage and monitor up to two garage doors (requires Continued Page 8 April 23-26, 2014 • Las Vegas, Nevada For links to our advertisers go to: www.garagedoornews.com NEWS G ARAGE D OOR T ALL GARAGE DOORS ARE NOT CREATED EQUAL. The owner of that original company had actually helped the brothers start up, and remained a minority partner for the first ten years of the company’s operations. The company quickly gained a reputation as a trustworthy garage door company that focused primarily on the residential renovation market. Bill joined GDN Doors four years ago as an installation and service manager. He brought with him years of experience in the commercial/ industrial door market. His specialty was high-end installations and 24/7 service operations. While GDN Doors had always done some new commercial installations, it had never been the focus of the company. Backed by Bill’s technical expertise and the hiring of two installation teams, GDN Doors successfully grew its market share in larger commercial doors. For the first time, GDN Doors also started bidding on projects that included rolling steel doors and large industrial sectional doors. The problem is that they never seem to get the projects, even when they tried really low mark-ups. Even though Bill was not responsible for sales, the owner of the company asked him to take the lead on figuring out why GDN Doors' proposals were uncompetitive. While Bill is well-trained on the installation and service side, he doesn’t know where to begin on understanding the sales process. How can he figure out what is going wrong? Who can he turn to for advice? What are some possible reasons? Bill had been a garage door installer and service technician for over 15 years when he started up his own company. While he had prior experience in a broad range of door projects, he really specialized in light commercial and retail work. At first, he worked for a weekly wage – barely marking up the products he sold. Gradually he professionalized the organization. This included the hiring of a salesperson, improved office support and additional installers. Case 23-2 ANSWER: One of the most difficult issues for a sales organization is truly understanding the reasons behind an unsuccessful bid. There are two main reasons for this difficulty – it requires competitive information and an understanding of the decision making process of another company. Price is an obvious factor, but it may not be simply a function of the mark-up used on the bid. It could also include product costs from GDN Door suppliers (how aggressive were their suppliers’ prices?), and GDN Door’s cost of installation. It is possible that the overall price submitted in the bid was acceptable, but the product offering – specific door, operator or dock leveler – was seen as less desirable to the customer. Alternatively, the customer could have questioned the ability of GDN Doors to deliver the required level of service. In other words, it could have been seen as a risky bid. In any request for a quotation, a company’s bid is not only judged on its own merit, but also against competing bids and the specific requirements outlined in the RFQ. A competing bid, for example, may have exceeded the requested product standards. There are two ways to gather data to answer these questions. Bill can, working with his main suppliers, put together a database of failed bids, looking at which door dealers were successful and (to a limited degree) what products were used. It is also possible to take a more direct approach. It is often wise to follow-up on a failed bid with a call to the customer to find out why it was unsuccessful. These debriefing sessions can go a long way in understanding the process. Case 23-3: A Customer Service Focus Because of his experience, Bill maintained close control over all installation and service issues. While other crews were sent to install new doors or service existing doors, they all reported directly to Bill. This structure ensured a focus on quality and customer service. That focus had driven sales growth over the years. The last several months, however, have been frustrating for Bill. Because the company is doing well, the company has hired more people and the company has become more complex. This means that Bill is more stretched than usual. He has been spending time on budget issues, he has had to meet with the company’s bankers, and he has had to deal with a few human resources issues. Each of these issues, while important, has distracted him from his direct attention to installations and service work. Over the past few weeks, GDN Doors has seen a spike in minor complaints about installation and service work. The problems were all small. They were quickly dealt with, and will not likely impact the company’s reputation. Bill, however, is worried that this is a sign that he needs to remain focused. Is Bill reading the situation correctly? Should he be alarmed? The trend is a six-month moving average of the monthly seasonally adjusted annual rates (SAAR) of housing starts. “The trend in housing starts decreased slightly in January, while the inventory of newly completed and unabsorbed units saw a modest downward trend in the last half of 2013. This is consistent with our expectation that builders will continue to gradually adjust activity in order to manage their levels of inventory,” said Mathieu Laberge, Deputy Chief Economist at CMHC. CMHC uses the trend measure as a complement to the monthly SAAR of housing starts to account for considerable swings in monthly estimates and obtain a more complete picture of the state of the housing market. In some situations analyzing only SAAR data can be misleading in some markets, as they are largely driven by the multiples segment of the markets which can be quite variable from one month to the next. Designed by architect Jeffrey Berkus and constructed by Element Building Co. to spotlight the latest in innovative products for the future of homebuilding, the project is expected to achieve Emerald status under the National Green Building Standard (NGBS). The home was open for tours in February during the International Builders’ Show. Virtual tours are available online at http://www.newamericanhome2014.com. Rising out of the foothills of the exclusive Sky Terrace housing development in Henderson, Nev., the 6,700 sq. ft. home’s open layout, large windows and glass doors are strategically placed sensing the future to take full advantage of the spectacular desert views and create seamless transitions between indoor and outdoor living spaces. In an interview at the open house, builder Josh Anderson touted the importance of the garage door design in this particular Hercules 2s project. “Working within the confines of a narrow lot design, the front facing garage is the first thing guests see when they approach the house. With its glistening bronze anodized aluminum frame and frosted glass panels, the Avante set the stage for what lies inside. The impact is especially dramatic at night when the door is lit from behind,” Anderson said. The two-car garage has a tandem third bay that can be used as a workshop or exercise area. Anderson added, “In regions where basements aren’t common, the garage often becomes additional living space. The Avante door allows natural light in, while maintaining a degree of privacy. That makes the space more inviting to use for more than just storage and parking.” Microwave motion sensor for activation of high-speed, commercial doors and gates Simple, Proven, Versatile Heavy-duty, reliable motion sensor for all your applications Easy installation & programming - Remote control with illuminated buttons confirms your settings - User-friendly function menus Bircher Reglomat Phone 800 252 1272 www.bircherreglomat.com NEW features include: - 2 independently programmable outputs - Pulse on exit - Longer cable 24 The Garage Door News MARCH 2014 INDUSTRY Getting the Most Out of the 2014 IDA Expo LAS VEGAS – This April, garage door dealers and technicians will converge on the Las Vegas Convention Center for the 2014 International Door Expo. Attending the Expo is an investment of time and money, so it is important to think about what you want to achieve at the convention. Ideally, this includes a focus on suppliers, market trends, education and networking. Manufacturers and Distributors At this year’s IDA Expo in Las Vegas, there will be 11 hours available to walk the exhibit floor and interact with the approximately 150 exhibitors. Some of these exhibitors are long-known brand names in the industry – but there will also be some new exhibitors at the Expo. Most door dealers understand that it is important to use the annual door trade shows to visit current suppliers. This allows them to meet key people, see new products and discuss concerns in an informal manner. It also allows a door technician to speak directly to technical people from the manufacturer. Overall, these faceto-face encounters build product knowledge and trust. Dealers and technicians should also visit the booths of manufacturers and distributors that they are not currently purchasing from. This further develops product knowledge and has the potential to lay the ground work for future purchases. By beginning a conversation with these other potential suppliers, a trusting GEAR KITS 7575 & 7576 relationship also begins. More importantly, dealers and technicians always benefit from understanding full productlines that they do not currently sell. Seeing products and revenue options beyond current sales provides seeds for future growth ideas. Market Trends Pulling together the information gathered from the complete exhibit floor allows a dealer to see trends in the industry – new product types, new materials, new accessories, new technology, etc. This is heightened by attendance at the Expo over multiple years. Those trends, again, provide a dealer with the information necessary to begin exploring future business moves. Educational Opportunities In addition to the exhibits, there are a couple of dozen workshops and educational opportunities at the IDA Expo. For managers, workshop topics include sales, marketing, accounting, theft-prevention, the Affordable Care Act (“ObamaCare”), and managing employees. Technicians and managers can benefit from technical workshops on topics such as UL updates, loops, fire doors, and high speed doors. These professional development opportunities are an important source of new ideas and a key way to stay in tune with an ever-changing industry. These workshops are generally interactive. This means Continued Page 26 NEW! Introducing our new 7575 & 7576 Gear Kits that are directly compatible with Chamberlain®, Liftmaster®, Sears®, and Craftsman® residential chain drive openers. QUESTION 1: How can I raise the garage door when the garage door torsion spring is broken? QUESTION 1, ANSWER 1: There should be a release mechanism that disconnects the door from the opener. Some are a pull rope. My Genie screw drive has a metal handle you turn. QUESTION 1, ANSWER 2: How do you know he has an opener? He said the torsion spring is broken. QUESTION 1, ANSWER 3: The disconnect is also a method of escape when power fails in a fire. QUESTION 1, ANSWER 4: You can release the latch and lift the door with arm power. What I did was I got a small U clamp, spliced the broken spring coil stretching it out. Then rewind it. 25 MARCH 2014 THIS MONTH'S QUESTIONS QUESTION 1: Opening a garage door after a spring breaks door jumped off the pulleys on the horizontal bar above the door. How can I raise the door without lifting the weight of the entire door? QUESTION 1, ANSWER 7: Is your car in the garage? Regardless, you're best off having a garage door repair outfit replace the spring. Shouldn't cost much. But to answer your question, if it's a heavy wood door, forget it. Too dangerous without 4-6 beefy guys. If it is a metal door, one or two strong guys. The cables aren't stopping it. It's the weight of the door. QUESTION 1, ANSWER 8: Same as you usually do, but it takes more power. Once ready to work on it, close the door and replace spring(s). There are many YouTube videos, if you look around. Remember safety is priority one! QUESTION 1, ANSWER 9: You can't. QUESTION 1, ANSWER 5: Lift with a pry bar enough to get a floor jack under it. Raise it as high as the jack goes. Put some 2x4 scraps against the rails, and put some blocks on top of the jack. Repeat. Always keep those 2x4s under there in case the jack slips. Once it's about halfway up, get a few friends to help lift it by hand the rest of the way. I've done this. It works! QUESTION 1, ANSWER 11: Does a forklift raise the entire weight of the door? QUESTION 1, ANSWER 6: Now some openers have battery back up. QUESTION 1, RESPONSE: I've pulled the release mechanism, but the cables that run from the bottom of both sides of the garage QUESTION 1, ANSWER 10: Sure you can. Use a forklift! Duh! QUESTION 1, ANSWER 12: Actually, in my old house, with a double wood door (1972 vintage), when the spring broke, my wife and I were able to grunt up the door. The hardest part is really the first few inches. I think I used a pry bar and stuck a 2x4 under it. Then we were able to get our fingers under it. The higher the door goes, the lighter it becomes, which is good because, as it goes higher, you are lifting above your head. I know we did this more than once over the years. And, if you have three people, it would be much easier. Of course, your door may be heavier. QUESTION 1, ANSWER 13: Since you said "spring" and not "springs" you might be able to horse it up. I know there is no lifting my 150 MPH wind code door without the springs (both of them). You install the springs with the door down though. Then you wind them up with two steel rods, alternately inserted in the windlass holes (about a 1/4 turn at a time). The trick is getting the tension so that the door goes up easily and still goes all the way down. Be sure you buy the right spring or you will not be able to find this sweet spot. QUESTION 1, ANSWER 14: You can't. That is what the spring is for. You will just have to struggle and prop it up if you need to get the car out. Normally, spring(s) is/are replaced with the door shut and then tensioned up with a tool. Same tool for de-tensioning. Be very careful not to get your fingers trapped. Read the instruction book. Very often tension is not the way/ direction you expect. There are usually two springs, so be careful. The door may jam due to unequal forces. QUESTION 1, ANSWER 15: You don't. While it is down, you use that opportunity to install new torsion springs. Alternatively, you could disassemble the entire door. QUESTION 1, ANSWER 16: If you have something sturdy to stand on, you can do it after watching a few YouTube videos. I paid $60 for a spring, and $6.50 for a pair of "winding bars." I think Continued Next Page These questions are real, and the answers are provided by other internet users, not by the Garage Door News. Ideally, a platform you can stand on with both feet. The satisfaction from doing it myself was worth more than the $100+ I saved. I guess that's why we visit these forums; because we don't want to go through life dependent on someone else for every little problem that comes our way. I wore a face mask while I wound the spring, and though it may not have been necessary, I would wear one again if I did it a second time. Good luck! your face and body are not in the same plane as the handles you use to turn the winding cone. I used a step ladder when I replaced mine last year, placed a couple of feet away from the cone. Still used safety equipment, of course, which included work lights. QUESTION 1, ANSWER 17: I wonder if the face mask you wore was rated for whatever might go wrong as you wound the spring. Could you have been working with a false sense of confidence? QUESTION 1, ANSWER 20: What does the platform have to do with my question about the face mask? I'll ask my question a bit differently... I assume you wore a face mask to protect yourself against something hitting you in the face while you were winding the spring. What specifically did you think might hit you in your face, and do you know if the face mask was rated for the force that that object might have exerted? QUESTION 1, ANSWER 18: No, I was the one who went through the trouble to secure a platform. That made doing it easy as pie. You also have the ability to add an additional T-shape astragal to provide more compression to fill voids from an uneven surface under your door. This design also gives you the option to install shorter lengths of the retainers and by adding an astragal seal that makes a seamless weather seal.
