Shabbat as a Mindfulness Practice

About our featured guest:

and Director of the Center for Jewish Mindfulness. Jordan was ordained by the Reconstructionist Rabbinical
College in 2008, after which he served as Rabbi at Aitz Hayim Center for Jewish Living. Prior to pursuing
his rabbinical studies, Jordan studied Conservation Biology at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, spent
several months at Zen centers in California and France, and studied Jewish text at the Conservative Yeshiva
and Machon Pardes in Jerusalem. He is a 2014 recipient of the Covenant Foundation’s Pomegranate Prize for

Visions of the Jewish State
A Seminar with Professor Howard Lupovitch
Mondays in January at 7:30 p.m.
Zionism was far from monolithic as an ideology and as a movement; on the contrary, it was a
complex tapestry of ideas and aims which added up to different notions of what the Jewish State
should be. In this series, we explore the different and at times contradictory Zionist
visions of the Jewish State and how the founders of the State of Israel wove these visions
together into the complex and at times contentious Israeli Society and Politics.

Who are the people in your
Talmudic neighborhood?
with Aron Wogel
Besides their halachic teachings, the rabbis of the Talmud had
unique ways of interacting with each other. We’ll explore these
relationships through the lens of Talmudic storytelling (known as
agadata) to try and understand a bit more of what life was like
during Talmudic times and how we can internalize their lessons
today.
Personalities will include: Rabban Gamliel (the powerful
president), Rabbi Eliezer and Rabbi Elazar (Rabbi Yochanan’s
strongest students), Bruria (Rabbi Meir’s wife), and more!

Minyan Matters
Message from the President
Dear Friends,
We should be proud of our synagogue’s continued commitment to
daily morning and evening minyanim. Approximately one hundred
individuals attend one or more services each week. While the makeup
of those attending changes over time as new mourners begin their
periods of mourning and others complete theirs, there is a
continuous need for new participants to get involved. As we enter the
winter months when regular participants scatter to warmer climates,
the need is even greater. What better time for you to get involved!
I encourage you to join our minyan team as a regular attendee (e.g.
one morning or evening a week) or on an on-call basis. Most morning
minyanim run 35-40 minutes while evenings run 15-20 minutes.
If you join us, you will be doing a mitzvah, feel a sense of community
and know that you are helping to continue an important Jewish
tradition.
Heartfelt thanks to everyone who has been part
of Kehillat Yom Yom / Daily Minyan
at Beth Ahm since we launched
our Minyan Matters project in the spring of 2006.
It has been a great honor to work with
so many dedicated volunteers
and to get to know all of you wonderful
people as together we built
a strong, vibrant davening community.
The Beth Ahm minyan is in very capable hands
with our new coordinator Rick Emmer.
I know that everyone will continue to
give minyan your participation and support!
To volunteer or for more information, please call or email me.
Remember, it’s not how often one comes to minyan but that one
makes the commitment.
KOL HA KAVOD!
B’yedidut / In friendship,
Nancy
I wish you and your family a Healthy and Happy New Year!

Message from the Rabbi
Being Mortal
Dr. Atul Gawande’s book Being Mortal was recommended to me several times before it made its way to the
top of books that I ‘absolutely had to read’. Now that I’ve read it, it seems to me a truly important book. While
I think that Dr. Gawande’s book is wonderfully written and engaging, and that it has many insights about the
way our society deals with the realities of aging, medical care, nursing care, hospice (and other
issues as well), I believe that Being Mortal is important because it repeatedly calls on us to ask questions.
Dr. Gawande brings wonderful stories of how individuals, families, and institutions deal with the challenges
of disease and aging. He repeatedly shows his readers how important it is for individuals to ask themselves
(or be asked) questions about what they want their life to be like when illness, disease, or injury derails their
life plans. By asking questions, individuals are given the opportunity to make important choices about continuing/ending treatment, about
where and how they will live, and what kind of treatment they would like done when they can no longer make these choices.
This is difficult ground to cover. What makes Dr. Gawande’s book uplifting rather than depressing, is that he shows that having these
conversations and making these choices create comfort and relief for individuals and for families in situations where one might assume that
few choices remain, and little comfort is available.
Rather than a book report, this article is a call to our congregation. We have not had many opportunities to tackle this issue, and to the
extent that we have, we have not done it in a sustained way. Perhaps the time is right for us to help each other have these discussions or at
least prepare ourselves for these discussions. These are conversations that are applicable to all of us because we are all mortal. You don’t
need to be in an advanced stage of illness to want to explore ideas and your own feelings surrounding illness and dying. So, consider this
an invitation to discussion. If you would be interested in shaping and/or participating in conversations like this, please let me know.

Rabbi Rubenstein is sending out a call for those who would like to read Torah
or a haftarah in the coming months. There are many opportunities for those who would
like to read. He is happy to provide you with materials (and encouragement!).
You can contact Rabbi Rubenstein directly
at [email protected] or by calling the synagogue office.

Young adults (22-40) are invited to join us for Havdalah,
food, and drink. Hosted at the home of Illana and Noah

“Do Jews Have Horns?” and Other Awkward Questions
A Conversation For High Schoolers
January 7 at 7:30 p.m. in the Teen Lounge
We are fortunate to live in a multi-cultural society where Jews can be Jews in whatever way they’d
like. Still, since not everyone knows what it means to be Jewish, you may be asked questions which
seem awkward or even insensitive. How should you respond? Join Rabbi Rubenstein for an open
conversation about being Jewish in America today and what it means to find a comfortable way to
field uncomfortable questions.
Hot chocolate and snacks will be served. All welcome! Please RSVP to Rabbi Rubenstein at
[email protected]
Save the Date
First Night Seder
Friday, April 22
Join Rabbi Rubenstein to recall the story of our freedom with family and friends. Special activities for the
kids. Dietary laws observed. Seder details including registration information will be available in March.

May their memories endure for a blessing
Honor the memory of your loved ones by purchasing a memorial plaque in the Kahan Memorial Room. The purchase of a plaque
will ensure that your loved one’s name will be read during the week of their yahrzeit. It is a lasting tribute of your love that links
the generations of your family. Plaques are currently $500 each. We hope that you will take advantage of this opportunity to assure your
loved ones will be forever remembered at Congregation Beth Ahm. Contact David Goodman at 248-851-6880.
