FACULTY PROFILE
‘India-The Big Picture’ CII- Media & Entertainment Summit 2012
Anil Kapoor
Actor
Anil Kapoor is one of India's biggest movie stars and one of international cinema's most prolific
and versatile actors. Through his offscreen role as a humanitarian and his stature as a prominent
cultural ambassador to Hollywood and the world, he has exceeded his already distinct reputation.
Born in the suburbs of Mumbai, India, on December 24, 1959, to film producer Surinder Kapoor
and his wife, Nirmal, Anil grew up surrounded by the burgeoning Mumbai film industry.
Against his father's wishes, Anil decided as a teenager to pursue acting as a profession, and
at age of 19 he landed his first role — sparking a career that would span 30 years (and counting),
with appearances in more than 150 films.
By the mid eighties, Kapoor had become one of India's most prolific, versatile and celebrated
actors. By continually reinventing himself in a series of roles, from unusual characters to
handsome leading men — while simultaneously delivering hit after hit — he earned an
affectionate nickname: “The Tom Cruise of India.”
Kapoor had amassed four Filmfare Awards (India's Oscars), a prestigious National Film Award for
his role in the film Pukar, and a massive and loyal Indian fan base — all by the time he first burst
into the American consciousness in 2008, playing the pivotal role of the quizshow host in
Danny Boyle's epic, Oscarsweeping hit, Slumdog Millionaire.
While Kapoor was recognized by his Hollywood counterparts with a Screen Actors Guild award
for that role, his actions behind the scenes quietly brought him an entirely different wave of
respect: Without fanfare, when he first signed on to the film, he donated his Slumdog salary to the
film's otherwise destitute Mumbai based child actors — paying for their education, for life, and
giving them a shot at escaping the real life slums from which Kapoor himself, thanks to the film
industry, had risen many years ago.
For a man who hosted the first ever fundraiser for Children's Right to Education in 2007; a man
who had worked toward the reconstruction of schools in Uri, Jammu and Kashmir after India's
devastating earthquakes that same year, it was a simple gesture.
Meanwhile, Kapoor expects to continue his behind the scenes work in a long and
successful career as a producer. Coming from a filmmaking family that has been producing
films for the last 50 years, he has produced over 30 films through his various family
owned production houses.
One of his ventures, Gandhi, My Father, explored the strained relationship between Mahatma
Gandhi and his eldest son Harilal, and won three Special Jury National Awards in 2007.
In 2010 he produced Aisha (based on Jane Austen's Emma);
Kapoor is especially proud to see his legacy carried on by his family: Actress Sonam Kapoor
(Anil's daughter with jewelry designer Sunita Kapoor, his wife since 1984) Kapoor's second
daughter, Rhea, is a film producer in Mumbai; and his youngest, Harshvardhan, has recently
returned to India after studying screenwriting at Chapman University California.

David Hill
Senior Executive Vice President
News Corporation
David Hill joined FOX Sports in December 1993 when News Corp wrested the rights to the National
Football League from CBS and he was charged with building a network quality sports division,
literally from the ground up. The legendary NFL television analyst John Madden, once on board at
FOX , christened it “FOX Sport,” as the only property in the portfolio initially was the NFL. Following
the highly successful launch of the NFL on FOX, with its 'Same Game – New Attitude' approach and
revolutionary FOXBox constant score and time graphic, the National Hockey League was added,
and with it came the FOXTrax glowing puck, two early production enhancements which became the
hallmark of FOX Sports under Hill.
Working closely with Chase Carey, Hill next started the Fox Sports Net, a hugely successful regional
sports network business, and was then moved to run the Fox Network, which was at the time
languishing in a poor #4 position. With shows like David E. Kelly's Ali McBeal, Seth McFarlane's
Family Guy, and the introduction of serial reality shows such as When Animals Attack, the Network
quickly assumed the #2 position, #1 in the demo. Hill continued running FOX Sports, which by then
was blossoming, now carrying MLB, Super Bowls, Stanley Cup Finals, World Series and was
legitimately “FOX Sports,” which has been America's #1 sports network for 14 consecutive years.
When DIRECTV, the world's largest satellite distribution systems became a News Corp subsidiary,
Hill worked under CEO Chase Carey as President of the DIRECTV's Entertainment Division
overseeing programming services and the integration of new technologies.
He returned to FOX after relinquishing his DIRECTV role, assuming the position of Chairman and
CEO of the FOX Sports Media Group, which is News Corp's U.S. based sports group which includes
FOX Sports, FOX Sports Networks, SPEED, FUEL TV, FOX Soccer, FOX Deportes, the Big Ten
Network and the hugely popular FOXSports.com, which in August 2012 set a record for monthly
traffic totaling 46 million unique users.
Hill has been hailed as a visionary, credited with launching US sports television into a modern age.
In short order, and despite initial skepticism, the FOXBox became a ubiquitous staple for all sports
broadcasts, and Hill is named on the patents for the yellow first down marker for football, the glowing
puck, and baseball's in-base microphones.
In his current role as Senior Executive Vice President, News Corp., he focuses on programming,
marketing, digital initiatives and other opportunities utilizing his extensive television experience and
expertise over the world wide breadth of the Company's operating units.
He began his career with News Corp. in 1988 when he helped launch Sky Television, Britain's first
satellite distributed television service. He then became Executive Producer of Eurosport – Europe's
first pan European sports service, and then launched Sky Sports, which with the addition of the
English Premier League, became a powerhouse part of what is now British Sky Broadcasting.
Hill began working in sports when Kerry Packer appointed him Executive Producer of his World
Series Cricket telecasts, and he worked closely with Packer on the development of a number of
television properties as Vice President/Sports at the National Nine Network in Australia. Prior to that
Hill, worked as a television news anchor and documentary maker with various Australian networks,
after starting as a 17 year old copy boy at a Sydney newspaper, the Daily Telegraph.

A review in the Indian Express called Harsha Bhogle the voice of Indian cricket and that is a
description that has stuck. He gave up a promising career in management to devote himself fully
to cricket and has achieved a fairly regular international presence on both radio (with the ABC and
BBC among others) and television. He has been the front man for the telecast of live cricket into
India on ESPN and Star Sports for several years now and also writes extensively on the game.
Apart from regular columns in leading newspapers and magazines, Harsha has also written two
books: one on India's cricket tour of England and the other, the authorised biography of
Mohammad Azharuddin, published by Penguin India. A new book from the Indian Express and
Penguin (Out of the Box), a collection of the best of his columns has just been published. Apart

Championships and presented a travel show (Travel India) on BBC World.

Ramesh Sippy
Film Maker
Son of renowned film maker G.P. Sippy, Ramesh Gopaldas Sippy was born in Karachi on January
23rd, 1944 and shifted to Mumbai in 1947.
He started working at the young age of 17, and at 21, he became executive producer of the film
Bhramachari, released in 1968. This movie went on to become a huge success and won several
Filmfare Awards that year, including Best Picture.
Ramesh Sippy cannot be cast into a mould – he is a path-breaker, a man of many firsts. He started
his career in direction with Andaaz, an unconventional, mature love story, dealing with the social
issue of widow remarriage, a subject far ahead of its time.
Wanting to do something different for his second film, Ramesh Sippy decided on a light comedy,
Seeta Aur Geeta, starring Dharmendra, Sanjeev Kumar and Hema Malini (in a double role for the
first time), a light comedy was a super hit.
And then came SHOLAY, superbly written by Salim-Javed, the biggest blockbuster in Hindi film
history and one of the most remembered films to this day. SHOLAY ran to full houses for five
years. In 1999, BBC India named SHOLAY the Film of the Millennium and Shri Amitabh
Bachchan, the Star of the Millennium. The British Film Institute named SHOLAY as the first
of the top 10 Indian films.
When the small screen caught his attention. Ramesh Sippy decided to make the serial Buniyaad
for Doordarshan. It ran for over a year on the National Channel, Doordarshan. Ramesh Sippy had
been working with his family-owned company, SIPPY FILMS till then. In 1993 he set up his own
production company—RS Enterprises.
Ramesh Sippy's son, Rohan a graduate from Stanford University, California, returned to India
,ready to try his hand at direction and in 2001 Ramesh Sippy produced a feature film Kuch Naa
Kaho, in which his son made his debut as a director.
In 2006, Ramesh Sippy produced Taxi No. 9211, his first film with an outside director, Milan
Luthria. In 2008 Ramesh Sippy Entertainment produced Chandni Chowk To China.
Over the years Mr. Ramesh Sippy has served on the Jury panels of several prestigious Film

Vidya Balan
Film Actor
She can stun you with her smile, she can touch you with her simplicity…
She can make you believe in miracles, she can make you wonder if she is real…
She is the progressive woman of today and then again she is a classic timeless beauty…
Vidya Balan may have started out on the small screen, but her talent allowed her to get absorbed
into mainstream cinema, and soon after she was unveiled in a dream debut : the epic Parineeta
directed by Pradeep Sarkar. Since then there has been no looking back. Her extremely sensitive
portrayal of the coy Bengali belle 'Lolita' in Parineeta, instantly won millions of hearts and
reserved a place for her in the top league of actresses in Bollywood.
Her ethereal smile, her touching simplicity, her flawless beauty and her ability to emote on screen
has won her admirers for a lifetime. Such was the euphoria over Vidya Balan's performance, that
she swept away every Best Debut Award in the country that year.
Soon after, Vidya went on to dazzle all with her talent in movies like Raju Hirani's Lagey Raho
Munnabhai, essaying the role of a charming, heart-warming radio jockey. She received great
acclaim for her portrayal of a possessed woman in Priyadarshan's Bhool Bhulaiyaa. These films
only reaffirmed her versatility as an actor who can pull of difficult characters with effortless grace.
Her films Paa & Ishqiya (one of the top 5 films of the year) not only set the box-office on fire but has
also set her apart as one of the finest actors of this generation.
Her last two releases - The Dirty Picture and Kahaani, were top grossers and acclaimed as few of
