The Swinging Queensland Pops Orchestra goes Italian
Dear Friends
It’s great to be able to welcome you all to this our third newsletter for 2013.
Importantly I welcome the 116 “new” Friends of the Pops and the large number of “old”
Friends who have returned to the fold. These are exciting times for the Pops Orchestra
and your enthusiasm and obvious support is very welcome.
It’s been a very different Pops over recent weeks. “Jazz with the Stars” at Jupiters on the
Gold Coast saw the Pops Big Band working with Australia’s leading jazz entertainers –
James Morrison, Emma Pask, Darren Percival and Grace Knight. Just two weeks later
“Come Swing with Me” saw Tom Burlinson join with the Pops Big Band along with
strings, woodwind and percussion. Supporting Tom in some great duets was Simone
Dew. Rachel Beeton stole the show with her performance of the Artie Shaw Concerto
for Clarinet and 12 Metre Boogie. My congratulations to all concerned and my thanks to
all who attended the near on “sold out” show.
In just over a week we will present the second of the Friends of the Pops social events.
We are again in the Tatts Club for the “Malts and Melodies” event and I’m pleased to say
there are tickets left for this event as we go to print. This means you still have time to
come and join us for this event. The Friends functions are designed to bring you, our
Friends, closer to the organisation and the musicians that are the Pops. Your support is
appreciated and any profits from this event go straight to the purchase of music.
Just two shows left in 2013. I have included the program for Viva Italia in this newsletter
so you will see what an amazing night we have planned for you all. There are a few
additional surprises now included in this concert so be sure not to miss out with this
one. Remember “Best of British” was sold out and “Come Swing with Me” only had a
few tickets left so get in fast.
Two good news items before I finish. Firstly, I’ve heard all the concerns about no
matinée; so in 2014 every concert will have a matinee.
...Cont'd.......
Welcome our newest
supporter
The Matinees are back in 2014
........They will be Sunday afternoons at
2.00pm which should work for everyone.
Please support this decision and join with
us to bring great music to your friends and
family.
Secondly, there are two New Year’s Eve
concerts this year, an early evening concert
and the traditional late night event. The
latter concert now has the black tie
package for those who want the ultimate
New Years’ experience. The early concert
is for those who don’t like being out late so
again get in early and make this
30thAnniversary concert a night to
remember. The show is full of the most
popular requested song and music so this
is a night not to miss.
I’m grateful for your ongoing
communication with the Pops and I thank
you all sincerely for your support. You are
telling us you like what we are doing so
we’ll keep doing it.
Viva Italia featuring Anna –Maria La Spina.
Chris Fennessy, Greg Moore and Paul Ross are La Forza
You will get a serving of great Italian music used in your favourite pizza
and pasta ads as well as iconic Italian Overtures, well known Italian and
Neapolitan songs as well as those world-wide hits that have made the
Popera culture currently one of the most attended concerts.
Selena Pennetta will dance the Tarantella. The tarantella began in
connection with the bite of a spider. Supposedly, after the bite of a
tarantula, a disease called tarantism took over the patient, creating a
hysteria-like symptoms (“Tarantella”). At its birthplace in Taranto, Italy,
the “victims seemingly were cured by frenzied dancing” and thus today
the dance includes “light, quick steps and teasing, flirtatious behavior
between partners” (“Tarantella”). Domenico Taraborrelli will play "The
Stomach Steinway"
Warmest regards
Patrick

’O sole mio is a globally known Neapolitan song written in
1898. Its lyrics were written by Giovanni Capurro and the
melody was composed by Eduardo di Capua. There are other
versions of "’O sole mio" but it is usually sung in the original

Musical interludes by Roddy McDonald on the
bagpipes and Pops Brass Quintet
The term ‘whisky’ derives from the Gaelic usquebaugh – itself
from the Scottish Gaelic uisge beatha, or the Irish Gaelic
spelling uisce beatha. Uisce comes from the Old Irish for
‘water’ and beatha from bethad, meaning ‘of life’. With this in
mind, whisky is etymologically linked with a great number of
spirits, all of which refer to the origins of the spirit – the quest
for the elixir of life.
