Currawong Bush Park On Tuesday of last week the Year 6 Sustainability Team joined the Year 3's on an excursion to Currawong Bush Park in Doncaster to learn more about our environment. We had an action packed day and managed to escape most of the rain! We learnt about surviving outside and how to build a suitable shelter to keep you warm and dry if you happened to get lost in bush surroundings. Shelters made up of things like large sticks and bark should not be constructed underneath dead trees in case branches fall and break the shelter. We discussed making marks on the ground like arrows in the dirt or tie a hair ribbon in the trees as a signal that you are there. We discussed ways to look after our planet and more things we could be doing. We talked about leadership and worked in teams to discover items and problem solve in Currawong Bush Park. The Year 6 students worked in different teams and helped to lead the Year 3 students of their group. We had a session with Wild Action where the zoo comes to you. We were able to pat many animals like Gizmo the fruit bat, Cackles the kookaburra, Billy the koala, an echidna, an owl and even a Curlew, which is an endangered bird. The water dragon was popular. We learnt a great deal about many different animals and we all enjoyed meeting them all too. We also learnt what could and could not be recycled in our council of Manningham. We sorted cans, bottles, different types of paper and garden waste into the correct bins and learnt about the different rates at which products break down on our Earth. We are grateful and think it is wonderful that Manningham Council funded the whole day including the bus and provided a ruler, pencil, bookmark and a keyring for each student. We’d like to thank POPS for allowing us to join in and assist the Year 3’s on this useful and enjoyable excursion.
